ピックルボール Pickleball

ピックルボール、去年も一昨年もレッスンを受ける機会があったのに、用事ができてキャンセルをしました。でも、今回、友人のお誘いで初めてする機会がありました。 We had several chances to take pickleball lessons over the past two years, but we needed to cancel every time because of events. But this time, we accepted our friend’s invitation, and played for the first time.

昔テニスをしていたので、その調子でボールを受けようとして何回も失敗しました。でも、慣れてきて、少しづつボールを返すことができるようになると、面白い。 I played tennis a long long time ago. So, I tried to return the pickle ball like how I returned a tennis ball. But it didn’t bounce like a tennis ball. Naturally I failed to return the pickle ball many times, but I started to get the hang of it, and eventually was able to return the ball. Then, it became much more fun.

一回プレイをしただけの私にとっての面白い理由。多分、ゴルフと同じように、スイートスポットでボールを受けた時の感覚。ボールだけに集中してラリーを続けられた時の緊張かな。もしも1年、2年続けていたら、その時は違った感想があることでしょう。 Here are my reasons for having fun playing it. Like golf, it simply feels so good when I could hit the sweet spot. I also like the intensity of focusing on the ball when we have a long rally. I am sure I will feel differently if I could play it for 1 or 2 years.

ところで、年が明けてからずっと、朝から晩まで毎日、ウェブサイトとHDの整理を続けています。もういい加減疲れてきてます。これから先も二週間ぐらい続きます。そんな中、ピックルボールは気持ちよかった！ By the way, I’ve been cleaning and organizing websites and my computer HDs for weeks now from morning till the end of the day everyday. It’s such a tiring process, but I estimate it will take two more weeks to complete. So playing pickleball was quite refreshing.

また、去年から続いている首のディコンプレッション セラピーも2月半ばには終了するはずです。 Also, another not so fun thing, the decompression therapy should end in mid February.

ということは、2月半ばからまた時間ができるので、もしかしたら、このピックルボールにハマるかもしれません。私たちのコミュニティーにもコートが6面あるはずです。今度チェックしてみようと思います。 What this mean is that I will get back time for more fun activities such as playing pickleball. I have a feeling that I may get really into it. Our community has 6 pickleball courts, and also some pickelball coaches. I should check into that for sure.

Hike 4: Top Of The World Arch

11.3km の行程、397m の高度差。ネバダ州にあるヴァレーオブファイヤー州立公園に行ってきました。 7 miles and 1,300 feet of climbing. We went to Valley of Fire State Park in Nevada.

トレイルはないので、ハイクリーダーの記憶に頼るのみです。 We didn’t walk on a trail. So we followed our hike leader who went entirely by memory.

公園の名前を直訳すると、燃える谷です。飛行機の上から見える眺めは、まさに燃えているように赤い。 The name of the park is Valley of Fire. You can see the red section, like a fire, even from an airplane.

そんな中の荒地や岩を登ったり降りたり繰り返しました。 We hiked up and down so many times in this wild place.

バンちゃん達は、違うルートを選びました。豆粒のように見えるのが彼らです。 Some members of the hiking group, including Banchan, took a different route. They can be seen as two dots in the picture below.

まだまだ目的地は遠い。 The destination is still far.

ついに見えました。バンちゃんが立っている、向こう側の岩の上が私たちの目的地です。 But finally we could see the destination rock. Banchan was already standing near the arch rock. Can you see the dot on it?

再び岩を降り、最後の登りです。 Again, we went down rocks, and went up the last rock.

そして、着いた！　Whew, we made it!

ここがトップオブザワールドと名付けられたアーチです。 This is the our destination, Top Of the World Arch.

このアーチの奥には、ジオキャッシングの箱がありました。（注：詳しくはこのサイトを参照） We found a geocache in the back of the arch.

せっかくここまで来たので私もアーチの上を歩いてみました。いい眺め！ I walked on top of the arch as well. It was a great view.

しばしの休憩の後、さあ、下山です。 After a short break, we descended from the top.

急な斜面をトラバースしながら少しづつ降ります。 We traversed ridiculously steep slopes slowly.

平地に降りて振り返ると、絶壁のような岩壁がありました。ハイクリーダーがいなかったら、絶対にできなかったハイキング。でも、できた！ When I looked back after we came down, I saw an impossible cliff that we just traversed. I could never have done this hike, going up down so steeply, without our hike leader. But we did it!!!

Hike 3: Petrified Wood Loop

5 km の距離と 183 m の高度差のハイキング。 It was a 3.1 mile hike with 600 feet of elevation change.

距離的には短いんですが、雨が続いたため、滑りやすい10cmぐらいの泥地を歩くハイキングとなりました。 The distance was short, but it became a challenging hike because we needed to walk through thick, slippery, muddy clay as deep as 5 inches. The wet clay stuck to our boots when we picked up our feet. The many days of rain we have had this winter caused the muddy sections.

私たちの目的は化石化した木を発見する事でした。 One of the purposes of the hike was to find petrified wood.

木が化石化するということは、木の中にミネラルが浸透し、それが1億年以上経って石になるということです。だから、小さな木片のように見えるものでも、拾ってみるとずっしり重い。 The petrification of a piece of wood means that minerals went in the wood and replaced the wood over 100 million years, so the wood became rock. Therefore, even a small wood chip is quit heavy when you pick it up.

一億年の経過が、その重みになって感じられるようでした。 When I felt the weight of the piece of wood/rock, I had the sensation of holding 100 million years of history right there.

この地帯はかつては海の中であったため、石膏がたくさん地表を覆っていて、光っているました。　The area was under the sea once upon a time. So many gypsum pieces were there on the surface, sparkling in the sunlight.

また、大陸移動が繰り返し起こっていたため、地形は複雑です。 The ground formation of this area is quite complicated because the plates have moved many times.

そんな中を登ったり降りたりしながらの、楽しいハイキングでした。 We walked up and down in this unique place, and thoroughly enjoyed it.

スクリーンフリー Screen Free

先日友人がスクリーンフリー（注1）の効果を話してくれました。 My friend told me about her positive “Screen Free” experience the other day. (See Note 1.)

たかだか1日なら、一人でだってできそう。一週間となると、家族や友人に、その旨を伝えておく必要があるかもしれません。ハイキングや旅行をしている時は、まさにネットアクセスができないことが多いので好都合かもしれません。 If it’s only one day, it shouldn’t be so difficult. If it goes on a week, it may be challenging and will need to tell friends and family about it. I say when I hike or take a trip somewhere it’s a perfect time to do this because we often can’t access to internet.

まずは、一週間に1日、そんな日を作ってもいいかもしれない。TV、iPad 、スマホ、ネットから解放されたらどんな事ができるようになり、どんな事に気づくようになるのか試してみよう。これは言ってみれば、便利さを追求してきた結果の不都合に対する一つの解決策になるのかもしれません。 I could try it one day per week. I am curious what I can do, and what I can see and what things I will be aware of around me by freeing myself from TV, iPad, iPhone, and all net access. Hey, I just thought this could be a solution to the negative consequences of the conveniences we’ve built up in the past so many years.

滝 Waterfall

先週、雨の中、近くの崖にできた滝を見にいきました。 We went to see waterfalls at nearby red rocks.

砂漠地帯に雨が降ると、降水量は半端ではありません。だから普段は何もないのに滝ができるんです。 The volume of the water becomes more than you can imagine once we get rain in the desert. So we can see the instant waterfalls pop-up where normally we see nothing.

遠くからでもゴーッという水の流れが聞こえていました。 I could hear the sound of water falling from far away.

ところで、ウェブ上のファイル整理がひと段落したので、私のコンピュータのHD (ハードディスク）の整理をし始めました。外付けHD6個も一緒に整理するのが一番なので、それぞれを点検していったら、量の多さに眩暈がしてきました。 Changing the subject, I have started organizing my computer’s HD (Hard Disk). I have gone through 6 external HDs as well to make the process efficient. But I felt lightheaded due to the volume of data.

6年間溜め込んだデータです。整理整頓できるまで、多分、最低2-3ヶ月はかかる見積もりです。最終的には一番古い外付けHDを処分したいです。でも、もっと期待するのは、身も心も軽くなる事だと思います。 I estimate 2-3 months to complete the cleanup for all data I’ve accumulated in the past 6 years. My goal is to eliminate the oldest HD at the end. However, I think the process of doing this is more than that. It will make me feel much lighter and free, both physically and mentally.

Hike 2: Fallen Rock Cave

5.6kmの距離、152ｍの高度差。　3.4 miles and 500 feet of climbing.

距離はそれほどなかったんですが、チャレンジングな岩登りがありました。 Although the distance wasn’t long, there were challenging rock climbs.

そんな場所を時間をかけて通り過ぎてきました。 We spent enough time for those places and moved on.

時折の小休憩。 It’s important to have occasional water breaks.

ついに辿り着いた最初の洞窟は、Birthing Cave (出産の洞窟) と言われています。 Finally we came to the first cave called the “Birthing Cave.”

この洞窟の中で、幾つの命が誕生したのでしょうか。 I wonder how many lives were born in this cave?

なぜこの洞窟が出産の洞窟だったと思われているかというと、以下のような生殖器を指すペトログリフが描かれているからです。 The reasons why we call it that were found in the cave. Many petroglyphs were carved on the cave floor and ceiling.

さて、次の難関の先にある洞窟 (Fallen Rock, 落下した石) がこのハイクの目的でした。 Now, the highlight of the hike was the next destination, Fallen Rock cave. And it was the most challenging place to get to.

ついに洞窟が見えました。この小さな洞窟の中に入り、振り返ると、驚きの光景が目に入りました。 Finally, I saw the cave. When I went inside the cave and looked back, a stunning sight was there in front of me.

岩壁から落ちた岩の平らな面の一面に刻まれたペトログリフ。 The flat side of the fallen rock was full of petroglyphs.

これは鳥のようです。 This looks like a bird.

遠くから見ると、ペトログリフが描かれた石は、本当にチビっこい。私たちはそれより更にチビっこい。 The fallen rock with petroglyphs looked so tiny from far away. We were even tinier than that.

Hike 1: MV Rock

今朝、去年から降り続いていた雨が止んで、MVロックに光が差していました。 A ray of light was illuminating MV rock this morning after the recent rains.

昼過ぎには雨雲も見えなくなったので、久しぶりにMVロックまで行くことにしました。 We hiked up to MV rock for the first time in a long time since the rain clouds went far away in the afternoon.

往復、7.25kmのハイクとなりました。 It was a 4.5 mile loop hike.

MVロックの裾野には、ドラゴンと、巨大なターバンを被ったカタツムリが生息しています。 A dragon and a gigantic snail wearing a turban live there at the bottom of MV rock.

雨上がりのすぐ後だったので、苔や地衣類が嬉しそうでした。 The moss and lichen looked so happy because it was right after the rain.

今年、初めてのハイクでした。今年は50回のハイクにチャレンジしたいです。 It was the first hike for the year. I want to challenge 50 hikes this year.

初ショット 1st Shot

ビーバーダム山脈に再び雪が積もりました。大晦日から降り続いていた雨は、山の上では雪になっていたんですね。 The Beaver Dam mountains are covered by snow again. We had rain continuously since new year’s eve here but the rain changed to snow above a certain elevation.

近くのレッドロックの上にも雪がうっすらとかぶっています。こんな景色を目撃したのは、引っ越してきたから2回目です。 The red rock nearby our house also has snow at the top. This is my second time to see such a scene since we moved out here.

買い物に行く前の景色でしたが、帰ってきた時は濃い霧に包まれてしまい、何も見えなくなっていました。 It was visible before I went out for grocery shopping, but I could see nothing when I came back home because they were covered by thick clouds again.

これをラッキーと取るか、残念と取るか、意見が分かれるかもしれません。でも、私は断然ラッキーです。 Some people may say I was lucky to see it, but some may say it was unlucky because I can’t see it any more. But I say I was definitely lucky.

今年もたくさんの選択があって、色々な結果があって、多くの葛藤があるはずです。でも、私はいつもラッキーです。そんな今年を作っていきます。 I will have many choices, results, and conflicts this year as well. But I will be always lucky. I will make it such a year this year.
