おかえりロジャー　- Welcome Back Roger

ふと庭を見ると、オオミチバシリ、ロードランナーのロジャーがチョコンと芝の上に座っています。- When I looked outside, to my surprise, a roadrunner was sitting on the lawn.

今までこんなにくつろいでいるロジャーを見たことがありません。- I have never seen him relaxing like this before.

しばらくして、塀の上に飛び乗るのを躊躇していたようでしたが、ベンチに乗って、ようやく飛び乗りました。- He hesitated a little, but hopped on a bench, and hopped on the fence finally.

ふーん、仕草といい、この羽の状態といい、もしかして、この子は今年生まれたばかりかもしれません。- Hmmm, this one could still be young, born this year, based on the behavior and the condition of the feathers.

こちら、二日前に来てくれた別のロードランナー。やっぱり、羽も綺麗で目の当たりも格好いい。おかえり、ロジャー！子供のロジャー、元気に成長してね！- The picture below is another roadnunner who visited us two days ago.  Indeed, he is good looking with nicely covered feather and decorated eye.

Welcome back, Roger!  and grow up well, young Roger!

コロラド川のコンドル – Condor at Colorado River

バーミリオンクリフ国定公園 には一般公開されていない場所があります。抽選で選ばれた20人限定が行けるCoyote Buttes の The Wave という場所です。私たちは勿論すでに申し込んでありますが、早くても10月以降でないと行けません。待ちきれない私たちは、下見の意味でバーミリオンクリフぐるりと回る 89 号線を走ってみることにしました。 – A certain location in the Vermillion Cliffs National Monument is open to public by permit only.  It’s called the Wave at Coyote Buttes, and only 20 people by lottery can go per day.  We have already applied for October’s lottery, the earliest we can apply for.  So we went to the Vermillion Cliffs as a preview by driving through HWY89 which runs around the monument.

すぐそばにはグランドキャニオン国立公園が南に続いています。つまり、コロラド川が流れているわけです。そして、コロラド川に架かるナバホ橋、ほんの少し休憩するために立ち寄っただけの橋でしたが、そこでとんでもない”おまけ”をいただいてしまいす。私とバンちゃんへの誕生日プレゼントみたい。 – There is Grand Canyon National Park south of the monument.  It means that the Colorado river is running there as well.  We stopped to rest a bit at the Navajo Bridge crossing the river.  Although the intention was a short visit, we ended up staying there a while because we received an unexpected present from nature for our birthdays, mine in May and Banchan’s in June.

カリフォルニア コンドルの子供。- A juvenile California Condor. 

そういえば、去年の5月にもザイオン国立公園で”1Ｋ”が生まれています。すでにデータベースにも記載されていますが、性別はまだわかっていないようですね。 – Come to think of it, a condor, “1K”, was born in Zion National Park in May last year as well.  It’s already listed in the condor database, but the sex is still unknown.

全てのコンドルにはタグとアンテナが翼に取り付けられています。この子にもすでにタグとアンテナが付いていますが、名前がまだないようです。まだうまく飛べないようなところを見ると、去年遅く産まれたのでしょうか。近くの崖から橋の下の鉄骨まで飛んできましたが、強風に飛ばされそうです。- Name tags and a radio antenna should have been attached to all condors.  This condor does have tags and an antenna on the wings already, but it seems that it doesn’t have a name yet.  I observed that this one couldn’t fly well, though it was able to fly from the nearby cliff to the supporting structure under the bridge.  And, omg, be careful!  It could  have been blown away by a gust of wind.

他の3羽はすでに遠くの方まで飛んで行ってしまいましたが、この子はじっと我慢しているようです。- There were three other condors that soared away.  But this one patiently stayed there.

次の写真はアイダホ出身の”XX”という名前のオスの子供。まだ2歳です。- The next picture is of “XX”, a two year old male condor.

平均 5-6 ヶ月ぐらいで巣立ちをし、一年ぐらいは親から食べ物をもらったり、飛び方や食料確保の訓練を受けるようです。ということは、ようやく自立できるようになったかなという時期なのかもしれません。  The average fledgling timing is about 5-6 months after hatching. Then the fledgling stays with the parents for a year so that they can get food from parents, learn how to fly, and learn how to get food.  Based on that, this condor could be independent by now.

ポートランド出身の”55”という名前のメスの成長したコンドル。- This is “55”, a fully grown female condor which was raised in Portland.

同じくポートランド出身の”H9″という名前のメスの成長したコンドル。- This is “H9”, a fully grown female condor raised in Portland, as well.

おや？雄じゃないの？ – Wait a minute, shouldn’t there be a male condor?

コンドル夫婦は生涯共にすると記憶していたので、コンドルデータベースの間違いかな？と思っい調査をして見ました。結果、赤ちゃんコンドルを育てるのは大変なことなので、よくメス2羽とオス1羽、またはその逆もありですが、3羽交代で育児をすることがよくあるそうです。 – I remembered that condor pairs stay together for their entire lives, so I researched it in case it’s a mistake in the database.  Apparently raising a condor baby is a very hard job.  So often a third condor, could be two males and one female, or the other way around, join the parenting and work together.

昨日はお父さんを見かけなかっただけなんでしょうか。 – Does this mean that we simply didn’t see daddy, a male condor, yesterday?

コロラド川に削られて、カイバブ層、トロウィープ層、ココニノ砂岩層など 2.6 億年ぐらい前の地層が露出しています。コンドルが飛ぶには高い崖が必要なので、コロラド川沿いは絶好の場所なんですね。- Colorado river carved through the Colorado plateau exposing 260 million year old strata, Kaibab, Toroweap, and Coconino sandstone formations.  The deeply cut canyon like the Colorado river is a perfect place for condors to be as they need a high cliff to fly out from.

ベニタイランチョウ　- Vermilion Flycatcher

諦めかけていたその時、すーっと飛んで来たベニタイランチョウ。この鳥をずーっと撮りたいと思っていました。前回、2回とも見つけられませんでしたが、ようやく3度目の正直でいた！ – I almost gave up, but suddenly out flew this Vermilion Flycatcher. I have been longing to take pictures of this bird for a long time.  I to do so twice in the past but couldn’t find it.  Today, I finally found it, a male and a female.

ただ、カメラの調整の手違いで、シャッターが思うように押せず、この一枚だけ。一枚だけでもいいんですが、有刺鉄線の上に止ってる姿はどうもいただけません。 自然の中という雰囲気しませんよね。- Unfortunately, my camera wasn’t reacting fast enough. Earlier I had changed some menu options to reduce noise, but that slowed my camera down too much, so the result from today was this shot only.  That’s all right as long as I have a one good shot, but it’s sitting on barbed wire.  I want a shot with a much more natural looking background.   

こちらは、メスのベニタイランチョウです。 – This is a female Vermilion Flycatcher.

木から木へと飛び移る彼らを追いかけて30分。結局枝の上の彼らは暗すぎてボケまくりでした。来週、また挑戦します。それまで、そこにいてね！ – I chased them for about half an hour from one tree to the other but I couldn’t capture them well because it was too dark in the tree. Well, that means that I have to go there again next week. So, please be there till then!

フクロウの森 – Owl Forest

隣人の友人が住んでいる地区の私有地の奥にフクロウがいるということで、行ってきました。野生動物のことですから、絶対にいるとは約束できないと言われても、期待に胸膨らませます。 – Our neighbor invited us to see owls deep in the woods on private property a few days ago.  She said that she couldn’t promise for sure that owls were still there as they were wild animals, but I was already so excited even before we got there.

1時間ほど歩いた後、友人が ”シーっ！” と、サインを送ってきました。- After an hour hike, she signaled us to be quiet, signing “Shhh!”

コットンウッドの森の中、友人の指の先の方を見上げると、”？”　”トトロ？” – In a forest of cottonwood trees, I looked up in the direction her finger was pointing.  “What is that?  Totoro?” (Totoro is a character in an animation movie “My Neighborhood Totoro“)

トトロが迷惑そうに、ちょっと振り向きました。- Totoro looked back down to us with an annoyed face.

やっぱりフクロウだ！ – It was indeed an owl!

わっ！もう1羽発見。 – Wow, another one.  

私たちをしばらく観察していましたが、無害だと判断して、また眠りに入りました。 – It observed us for a while, but went back to sleep again as it found us harmless.

ここで5羽のアメリカワシミミズクを目撃しました。2羽のカップルと、3羽の子供達。- We witnessed five Great Horned Owls, two adults and three of their kids.

子供、その1。この子はまだ眠そう。 – The first child looked so sleepy.

2番目の子供はちょっと成長が早かったのか、警戒心がありそうですね。- The second child is a little older than the other one, and looked more alert and suspicious.

3番目は、好奇心旺盛の大きな目。- The third one expressed more curiosity toward us with large eyes.

最後に、正面から撮れた大人のアメリカワシミミズクの写真です。- Lastly, this is a lucky shot from the front view of an adult Great Horned Owl.

ハチドリのヤキモチ -　Hummingbird’s Jealousy

「さわやな朝。ハチドリさん、おはよう。」 – ” Good morning, Mr. Hummingbird.  What a great morning it is today!”

「おや？見かけない顔。まだ若鳥みたい。かわいいですねー。」- “Look, a new face is there.  Who could that be?  It could be a fledgling.  How cute…!”

「ちょっと！かわいいのは僕。いつも僕でしょ！」 – “Hey, it’s me.  I am always the cute one.  Remember?!”

「そうそう、ハチドリさんが一番ね。」 – “Yes, yes, Hummingbird, you are always the most cute bird around here.”

「いつも私を追いかけてくれなかったら、もう遊んであげないよ。」- “I won’t play with you anymore if you don’t chase me all the time.”

アカオノスリのランチ – Red-tailed Hawk’s Lunch

突然現れたアカオノスリ。でも、もう何枚も撮ってるから今回はパス・・・と、思っていたら何か持ってる。 – A Red-tailed Hawk appeared suddenly.  I thought I could ignore it this time because I have taken many pictures of them.  But then, I noticed that it was carrying something with his feet.

やったねー！ガラガラヘビみたい。アカオノスリのランチ。質は必ずしも良くないですが、獲物を持って飛んでるアカオノスリは初ショットです。 – OMG, it’s arattlesnake!  It must have been his lunch.  Although the quality of the shots aren’t good, I am quite happy as it’s my first time capturing a Red-tailed Hawk with his prey.

オオミチバシリの贈り物 – Roadrunner’s Gift

窓の外に突然現れたオオミチバシリ。しかも近すぎ。カメラの準備が出来てなかった私にはこれが唯一のショット。 – A roadrunner appeared right outside of the window suddenly.  Nooo!  It’s too close!  This is the only shot I could get as it was so sudden.

口にくわえているのは孵化する前の卵のようです。さっさと食べずにくわえているところを見ると、彼女へのプレゼント、もしくはひなたちへの食べ物。でも、前回、カエルを加えているところを目前にして撮れなかった事を思うと、オオミチバシリから私への贈り物です。 – The thing he is holding in his beak looks like an egg almost ready to hatch.  Could it be a gift for his girlfriend or food for his baby?  In any case, it is a gift to me from the roadrunner because I missed a Kodak chance when he had a frog the last time.

アナホリフクロウ – Burrowing Owl

昨日は現実とは思えないほとラッキーでした。初めて見たアナホリフクロウ。 – It was so unreal, my first time seeing a Burrowing owl yesterday.

ビーバーダムワッシュ国立保護区のジャシュアツリーの森の中でした。 – He was standing in the Joshua tree forest at Beaver Dam Wash National Conservation Area.

それは私です。 – It’s me.

再び「私は誰でしょう」の時間です。さあ、皆さん、前回のブログで予想されたでしょうか。今回は皆さんに登場していただきます。 – Here we are again.  It’s time for “Who am I?”.  Have you guessed who those 5 creatures are in the previous blog entry?  Whether you did or not, the answers are here today.

それでは1番の方、出て来てください。長いシッポですが、まだよくわかりません。- Welcome Number 1: You have such a long tail, but I am still not sure.

お顔を拝見させてください。 – Can I see your face?

あ、2本の線が首にあるところを見ると・・・ – Oh, you have two stripes around your neck.

やっぱり、首輪トカゲさんだったんですね。ありがとうございました。- Of course, you are a Collared lizard.

2番の方、ご登場ください。このシルエットは、キツツキさんですね。- Number 2: The silhouette looks like a woodpecker.

Ladder-Backed (背中の模様が梯子のようなところから来た名前で、日本語名がありません。）のキツツキの奥さんでしたか。ご主人と違って、赤い帽子はかぶってないんですね。- You are a lady Ladder-backed Woodpecker because you don’t have a red cap on top of your head.

3番目の方、お願いします。- Please come out number 3.

ヒバリヒメドリさんでしたか。歌がとてもお上手ですよね。- You are a Lark Sparrow.  You can sing very well.

4番目の方、ご登場ください。ノドグロヒメドリさんでしたか。まあ、愛らしいポーズ。- Number 4:  You are Black-throated sparrow.  It’s a lovely pose.

あ、ノドグロさんも歌が上手なんですよね。- Sure, I shouldn’t forget to mention that you can sing well also.

それでは最後の5番目の方、ご登場ください。ムチヘビさんでしたか。- Number 5:  You are Coachwhip, red racer.

お疲れ様です。- Thank you for coming out from the bushes for us.

長い体、1.5 メートルぐらいありそうですね。車にひかれないよう、気をつけてくださいね。- Your body is long, about five feet.  Please be careful not to be run over by a car.

 

Mojave Desert Joshua Tree Road は静かな道でした。私たちの住んでいるSt George はコロラド高原に位置しますが、ここはその西に広がるベイスン・アンド・レンジという地質学的に面白い地域でもあります。カンブリア紀からペンシルバニア紀(約5 – 3 億年前）の岩も露出しているようです。サンプルの石を拾って来ました。- Mojave Desert Joshua Tree Road is a quiet road.  It runs through a part of the Basin and Range region. The geological formation here is different from the Colorado Plateau where we live in Saint George.  According to what I’ve read, rocks from Cambrian to Pennsylvanian eras (about 500 – 300 million years ago) are exposed at this location.  Below is one small sample rock from there.

2番の方。モハークのような髪型ですね。 – Number 2: Your hair style is like a mohawk.

3番の方。思いっきり正面からですね。 – Number 3:  Wow, from the front.

4番の方。横顔ですか。 – Number 4:  Side view.

5番の方。あら、シッポのようですね。Number 5:  Hmm, it looks like a tail.

Mojave Desert Joshua Tree Rd、日本語名がないので英語で残します。モハビ砂漠のジョシュアという木がたくさんある道。南の入り口近くに Woodbery Desert Study Area がありますが、何かがあるわけではありません。ウェブサイトもないので詳しいことはわかりませんが、Woodbery という人がかつて砂漠の研究をした場所らしいです。数カ所、やはり4輪駆動車が欲しい場所がありました。景色はいいですが、他と比べて特別優れているものがあるわけではありません。人は見かけませんでしたが、ちょっと興奮する生き物に遭遇しました。 – Mojave Desert Joshua Tree Rd is a quiet road.  You will find Woodbury Desert Study Area near the south entrance, but you find nothing other than a sign.  I looked for the website, but it doesn’t exist.  It seems that Mr. Woodbury intensively studied the desert in this area, so it’s named this way.  It’s not a super rough road, but I recommend 4WD to go through it.  The view is nice but nothing special compared to other areas.  We didn’t find any people, but we did find interesting creatures there.

今日のおご馳走 – Today’s Treat

花粉症に悩まされてしばらく外に出られませんでした。でも、窓の外は大忙し。 – I couldn’t go out for a while due to bad hay fever.  In the meantime, I noticed commotions in my backyard from time to time.

今までは巣作りの材料運びだったのが、食べ物に変化しています。前回の木の種に比べると、今日はおご馳走です。 – The stuff that Wren carries has changed from materials for their nest, to food.  It looks quite a treat compared to the tree seed he brought back last time.

落とさないように、ジャンプ。- Without dropping it, jump!

速い！巣に着いた瞬間撮れてません。 – Wow, it was fast.  I missed the moment it landed on the treehouse.

そして、さっさと顔を出して、 – The wren has already come out, and is ready to take the next action.

飛び立って行きました。 – Off he went.

もう産卵されたんでしょうか。巣に近寄ってはいけないと思うので家の中からの観察です。 – I wonder if it has already laid eggs in there.  I am observing only through a window since I don’t want to disturb them.

あ目上がりの夕暮れ、気持ちがいい。ＭVロックから出る雲は、まるで空をかき回しているよう。 – Below is a sunset view after rain.  It simply gave me a pleasant feeling.  A thick cloud coming out from MV Rock is like an arm swirling things around in the sky.

チトルパの木と枝にかけてある鳥の巣箱。4月11日の夕暮れでした。- This is our birdhouse hanging on a branch of the Chitalpa tree.  I took this photo on April 11th.

その翌日、木の調整をしてもらい、すっきりしたチトルパ。こちらは4月20日の撮影。たった10日の間に若葉がたくさん出てきてくれました。気持ちがいい。 – This is the same tree after being trimmed by a tree service the next day.  I took this photo on April 20th.  It’s only 10 days after the picture above was taken, but you can see so many new leaves have come out.  I can feel the energy from young leaves.

ただ、低い枝がなくなったので、高い枝から巣箱を吊るすことになりました。木を切ったり、場所替えしたりしただけでも鳥たちの反応が心配だったのに、さらに最悪の事態が起こりました。前日の強風で巣箱が落ちてしまったんです！- Because we lost the lower branches, we hung our birdhouse from higher branches.  We worried about the noise from cutting branches and the relocation of the birdhouse, but something even worse happened.  The birdhouse fell from the branch because of wind!  We had a very strong windy night, and the wind was simply way too powerful.

落ちてしまった巣箱をどうしよう。中を開けないまま、ベンチに置いてあります。もうシロハラミソサザイたちは戻ってきてくれないかもしれない。しばらくこのまま様子を見ましょうか。ごめんなさい、ミソサザイさん。- What should we do with the fallen birdhouse?  We placed it on top of a bench without opening it.  Bewick’s wrens may never come back to this birdhouse anymore.  Well, we will monitor it for a while.  I am sorry, wrens!
