ローズマリーの木の下で – Under the Rosemary

毎日が本当に面白い。ここセントジョージではどこにも行かなくても自然がやって来る。  – It is truly amazing that something happens everyday here, in Saint George, UT.   The great nature is coming to us without going out anywhere to see it.

今日のポストは、ショッキングです。出来ることなら避けたいんですが、目の前に自然がやってきてしまったら仕方がないです。  – Today’s blog post is rather shocking.  I wish I could avoid this, but it came to me. I accept it as a part of nature.

私が目撃した時は、巨大芋虫、スフィンクスはすでに死んでいたと思います。中庭から裏庭に抜ける通路沿い、ローズマリーの低木の下で格闘劇が行われていました。  – I believe the Sphinx Caterpillar was already dead when I started watching it.  The fighting was happening under the Rosemary bush along the side of a pathway from the courtyard to the backyard.

というか、一方的にタイガーウィップテールがガンガン攻撃していただけです。  – Actually, it was only a one way fight by a Tiger Whiptail Lizard against a large object.

少々残酷なので写真は載せません。その代わり、ビデオを撮ったので、興味のある方はどうぞ。こちらもかなりショッキングなので、耐えられるようでしたら、どうぞ。  – It is quite disgusting to me, so I won’t post any images of the lizard biting the caterpillar.  If you are interested, see below video instead.  Again, it’s a shocking video.  

最後に、このショット、気に入ってます。  – Lastly, I want to share this image which I like.

ターガーから牙が生えているように見えるでしょう？もちろんそんなことなくて、前足の爪が丁度口のあたりにあるので錯覚ショットになりました。ローズマリーの枝の影もエコーして牙見たい。  – Can you see the Tiger Whiptail is growing sharp fangs???  Of course, it’s an illusion; the right front foot’s nails are perfectly positioned in the background behind the Tiger’s mouth. The shadow of the Rosemary also echos the “fangs”.

昨日、今日と1000枚近く撮りました。その中から6枚、ハミングバードモスの特徴がよくわかるショットを載せます。 – I took nearly 1000 shots by following the Hummingbird Moth since yesterday.  I have chosen 6 shots out of them showing the characteristics of the moth well.

まずは、可愛い雰囲気の一枚。こんな風に花に近づいてきます。 – This shows a cute face.  It approaches flowers like this.

そして、舌を伸ばして  – and extends its tongue.

花の奥の方まで伸ばします。 – even getting deeper to the flower’s necter.

羽が綺麗ですね。 – The wings are pretty.

どのアングルからも蜜を吸い取ることができるようです。下からの時は羽をこんなにして、ホーバークラフトのように浮上させます。羽は自由自在に動かせるんですね。 – It seems they can collect the nectar from any angle. When the flower is downward like this, that is not a problem. The moth simply changes the wing movement and keeps itself floating.  It reminds me of hover craft.  

風がつよかったので捉えるのが大変でしたが、ハミングバードより近くに近寄れので、その意味では良かったです。アパチャー優先にして F 8.0に設定。ISOは2000。鳥を撮る時と同じように少し明るめにしました。そうすると、シャッタースピードは大体1/4000秒ぐらいになりましたが、それでもブレまくりでした。 – It was very hard to photograph with a strong wind.  On the other hand, it was easier than a Hummingbird photoshoot, because I could come closer.  I have set my camera in aperture priority, F8.0, and ISO 2000.  I also raised one notch higher for exposure compensation just like bird photography.  It gave me about 1/4000 seccond. Still, I couldn’t focus fast enough.

昨日ははザイオン国立公園に行ってきたので、そのことを書こうと思っていました。ところが、日が沈んだ後、外の景色を眺めていたらこんなものが飛んできてしまいました。だから、ザイオンは明日に書きます。これはWhite-lined sphinx moth 別名、ハミングバードモスと呼ばれてます。 – I was thinking to write about Zion National Park for today’s blog post because we were there yesterday.  However, this creature suddenly showed up at dusk while I was gazing at the nice sunset.  It’s called a White-lined sphinx moth, aka Hummingbird Moth.

夕暮れの風景を撮ろうと思っていたので、カメラにはバンちゃんから借りた16 – 35 mm のワイドレンズが付いていました。家の中に入って望遠レンズを持って出て来る間にきっとどこかに飛び去って行ってしまっているはず。仕方なく35 mmで撮ったお笑いのショットです。 – Because I was going to capture sunset views, I had the 16 – 35 mm wide lens, borrowed from Banchan, attached to my camera.  No way I could go inside the house and change the lens to my 400mm telephoto.  I was afraid of losing the moth if I left to get the other lens.  So, I kept chasing it with the wide lens.  How silly it was to use it to try to capture such a small flying object.

幸いなことに、この蛾はハミングバードと間違えそうなくらい大きいんです。ウィキペディアサイトの説明では、羽を広げると10cmぐらいだそうです。夜明け前と夕暮れ時に出てきて花の蜜を吸うらしいです。 – Fortunately, this moth is almost as large as a Hummingbird.  According to the Wikipedia Site, it has a 2 – 3-inch wingspan.  It comes out around dusk and dawn to collect nectar.

もう、本当に残念です。こんなチャンス、再び訪れてくれるでしょうか。寿命はあまり長くないらしいですからねー。これからしばらくは、何があろうとカメラ2台抱えて、日が沈んだ後はコウモリと蛾を探そう！ – Duh!  It was truly disappointing.  I wonder if such a chance will ever come again…  It doesn’t live so long.  OK, I have to carry two cameras after sunset always so that I am always ready to capture Hummingbird Moths and Bats.

どうやら撮りたいものリストはどんどん長くなって行きます。 – It seems my list of what I want to take pictures of is getting longer.

ところで、まさかと思いますが、ふと巨大イモムシを思い出します。こちらの7月5日のブログポスト。  – By the way, I kept thinking about the gigantic caterpillar I wrote about on July 5th, exactly three weeks ago.

タイミング的にはちょうど3週間前。ウィキペディアによると、2-3週間で蛾になるとのことです。まさかね〜。でも、もしも同じイモムシ、蛾なら、少し嬉しいです。 – The timing is right.  According to the Wikipedia site, it becomes a moth in 2 – 3 weeks after the caterpillar goes underground to pupate.  I doubt it, but if it’s the same caterpillar I saw that became this moth, it makes me happy.

Santa Clara River Reserve 2

トカゲが撮りたくて行った保護区でしたが、期待外れに終わりました。それでも帰りがけにようやく見つけた Tiger Whiptail です。「待って〜！そんなに早く行かないで〜！」  – It was quite disappointing that we couldn’t see many lizards at the Reserve.  But, at least we did catch this one, a Tiger Whiptail lizard on the return trail back to the parking lot. ” Wait up~!  Don’t go so fast~!”

「わ、何か食べてるの？」「文句ある？」 – “Wow, are you eating something?”  “So?  Do you have a problem with that?”

もう1匹はなんと鳥と間違えてしまうところでした。Zebra-tailed lizardが低木の上で日光浴とは、面白い。  – One more lizard was on a bush. At first, I thought it was a bird.  It’s funny seeing a Zebra-tailed lizard sunbathing on a bush.

「この辺に陸ガメがいるよー」と言いながらマウンテンバイクの女性が走り去って行きました。「フーム、今度は日中、めちゃ暑い時に来るしかないかな?」と思いつつ、崖っぷちから風景を眺めていると、何かがいるのを発見。  – “You can find Tortoises around here sometimes~” said a person on a bike.  “Hmmm, we may need to come back here during the hottest time of the day next time…?”,  thought I.  At the same time, looking around the cliff  aimlessly, Banchan found something right at the edge of the cliff.

あれは・・・　　- That is….

確かにロードランナーです。彼も朝食のトカゲが見つからなくて暇そうです。それが理由かどうかわかりませんが、ポーズをとってくれました。  – It is surely a Roadrunner.  He seems bored not finding any lizards for his breakfast.  Because of that, or not, he posed nicely for me for a portrait.

ようやくそれなりに満足いくショットが撮れて気分が高まります。  – Finally I made shots that I could be satisfied with, and it made me happier.

Say’s Phoebe はちゃんと朝ごはんをゲットできました。  – Say’s Phoebe could catch his breakfast.

Black-throated sparrow はもっぱら木の実で満足しているみたい。 – Black-throated sparrow is quite content with tree seeds.

Western Kingbird は歌を歌うのに夢中です。  – Western Kingbird is really into singing.

トカゲはいなかったけど、初めて見た鳥の写真が撮れたので、まずまずの1日でした。  – Although there weren’t many lizards, I am happy with the day because I could take shots of birds I have never seen before.

さて、話題は変わりますが、今日はユタ州のみの祝日、Pioneer Day  です。パレードや花火でお祝いがあるそうです。モルモン教徒じゃない人たち用に、Veyo のパイとZion のビールを飲んでお祝いするパブもあるとか。Pie and Beer… Pie n beer… Pioneer…  ちょっと苦しいかな？  – Changing the subject, it’s Pioneer Day today in Utah.  I’ve heard that there are parades and fireworks in many cities on this day.  For non-Mormons, there is a pub serving local Veyo Pies and Zion beer for the celebration.  Pie and beer…  Pie n beer… Pioneer… get it?

Santa Clara Rever Reserve

早朝、久しぶりに見えた朝焼け。  Early morning pre sunrize biew.

サンタクララというと、シリコンバレーのサンタクララ郡が俄然有名です。でも、ユタ州のサンタクララという町はとても美しい自然に恵まれた所です。そこにはサンタクララ川が流れていて、両岸の広大な場所は保護区となっています。（Santa Clara River Reserve）今日は早起きして、そこに行って来ました。 – When we talk about “Santa Clara”, most people think about Santa Clara County, the home of Silicon Valley in California.  But the City of Santa Clara in Utah is by far more beautiful and full of nature.  The Santa Clara River runs through the town, a vast land is protected along both sides of the river and preserved as the Santa Clara River Reserve.

家から車で10分ちょい、でも、アナサジバレーのハイキングの入り口には看板がないので、行ったり来たりして15分かかるかもしれません。もしくは諦めて帰る人も多いかもしれません。 – The Reserve is so close to our house, only a little over 10 minutes.  However, there is no sign at the entrance, therefore most people can’t find it and would go back and forth on the road looking for it.  In fact, many people might simply give up going there.

保護地区となっている理由は、おそらく1000年前のプエブロ先住民が住んでいたであろう痕跡があるからです。そこかしこに発掘場所があり、保護されています。その他は息を呑むような絶景はありませんが、清々しい眺めがあります。 – The main reason why the place is reserved is that it was home to Puebloan people once upon a time, about 1000 years ago.  You can find excavation sites here and there in the reserve.  There aren’t any spectacular views but you can find yourself  rejuvenated by the views.

私たちの目的はトカゲ。その為に早起きしたわけです。  – Our purpose of the visit was “Lizard”.  That’s why we woke up so early.

でも、ちょっと早すぎたのかな。アメリカ毒トカゲを見られたらいいなぁと30% ぐらいの期待がありました。それどころか、4時間のハイキング中、たったの2匹しか見られなかったという惨敗に終わりました。  – But it could have been too early.  I hoped to see a Gila monster with 30% expectation before today.  On the contrary, we saw only two lizards throughout the four hours of hiking.  What a disappointment.

明日、続きを書きます。 – I will write about this place more tomorrow.

サバクハリトカゲの話 – Tail of Desert Spiny Lizard

おや？サバクハリトカゲ君ね。  – Oh?  Ah, it’s you, Desert Spiny Lizard.

そんなもんくわえて何してんの？糸がついてるみたいだよ。  – Whatcha doin’ with such a thing in your mouth?  Do you know a string is attached to it.

あれ、落としちゃったの？  – Oh no, you dropped it?

でも、それって、君の体から糸でぶら下がってるってこと？  – but it means that it’s hanging down from you by the thread?  

で、どうするの？  – Well, whatcha goin’ to do with it now?

はやっ！  – Wow, fast!

そっか、結局いらなかったのね。  – I see, you didn’t want it after all.

どうやら無くなったみたい。  – It seems it’s gone now.

良かったね。お疲れ様です。 – Thank god it’s done.  Congrats.

 

Western Chorus Frog

昨日突然ピョンと飛び出て来たアマガエル、Ｗestern Chorus Frogです。日本語名はわかりません。 – This is a Western Chorus Frog which hopped out suddenly yesterday to our house.

こんな砂漠にも生息しているんですね。 – I didn’t know that frogs can live in desert locations like here.

捕まっている黒い管は水やり用のチューブで 10 mm もありません。ということはアマガエル君は 4-5 cm ぐらいでしょうか。 – The black tube that he is holding onto is a part of the garden irrigation system that is less than 10 mm diameter.  So it means that the frog is about 4-5 cm.

ここは玄関前の噴水の横です。つまり、ヒキガエル君たちのテリトリーなんですね。 – It is next to the fountain right outside of the front door.  It means that it’s in the territory of Woodhouse’s Toads.

ヒキガエル君にとって毎晩の水浴びは、すでに日課となりました。噴水を分け合って共存できるんでしょうか。 – It became a daily routine for Mr. Toad to take bathe in the fountain every night.  Can they share the water fountain, and co-exist?

Red Cliffs Recreation Area

Saint George  から15号線を北に向かって20分ほど、そこにレッドクリフリクリエーションエリアがあります。ここはレッドクリフ国定保護地区の中の一部なんだと思います。 – It takes about 20 minutes to travel on hwy 15 from Saint George, UT to Red Cliffs Recreation Area.  I think it’s a part of Red Cliffs National Conservation Area (NCA).

入口からの景色。遠くにPine Valley の山が見えます。 – This is a view from near the entrance.  Pine Valley is visible in a background.

私たちは朝まだ暑くならない前の4時間ほどをそこで過ごしました。下の写真の緑色の部分がピクニックエリアで、その周りにキャンプ場が点々としています。 – We spent about 4 hours in the morning there before it got too hot.  The green colored area in the below map is the picnic area, and 4-5 camp sites are around it.

ここの一つの呼び物は恐竜の発掘サイトです。 – One of the special features of this area is the site of dinosaur tracks.

名前を忘れてしまいましたが、恐竜の足跡の一つ。 – I forgot the name of it, but it’s the foot print of a dinosaur.

190万年前のこの同じ場所に恐竜たちがいたんですね。とても実感できない彼方前の出来事ですが、ただ存在だけがあり続けたという事実に驚愕します。 – There were dinosaurs at the exact same place 190 milion years ago.  It’s such a far far long time ago that I can’t comprehend it, but I simply at awe about the fact that it has been there all this time.

ここには同じコロラド平野にあるザイオン国立公園を思わせるような雰囲気が少しあります。多分、雨が降る頃には川になっている谷あい。 – Here, it gave me a feeling of some similarity to Zion National Park that is also in the Colorado plateau.  I can easily guess that it will be a river during the rainy season.

周りの赤い岸壁の光に反射して、木々まで赤く染まっています。 – The reflection from the surrounding red rocks made the trees red as well.

この保護区では、絶滅寸前のサバクゴファーガメも保護しています。 – This NCA protects the Desert Tortoise which is nearly extinct.

山を一つ越えればスノーキャニオン州立公園があるんですよね。そこと比べると、とても静かな場所です。断然また来たい場所になりました。次回は世界でもこの場所にしか生息していない Bearclaw Poppy を見つけたいなぁ。 – It’s not so far away from Snow Canyon State park which is right across a mountain, yet this area is so much quieter than Snow Canyon.  Definitely I want to come back here again.  I want to find Bearclaw Poppy next time which can be found only in this NCA and no other place in the world.

 

 

ミソサザイ、なんとか飛べた！ – The last Wren finally fledged!

ドキドキハラハラの数日間でした。 – It was such a drama keeping me on my toes the past few days.

この子が裏庭で最後に目撃できた赤ちゃんです。 – This is the last chick I found in our backyard.

他の赤ちゃんたちはもう見えなくなっていました。でも、お母さんは餌を運んできては低木の中に入っていきます。 – The other chicks aren’t there anymore.  But the mother Wren repeats  carrying their food and flying into a bush near the bird house.

みんな無事ですか？と聞いてももちろん答えてくれません。 – “Are they all right?” I asked, but of course, she didn’t answer.

でも、この低木の中から鳴き声が聞こえているところを見ると、後の2羽はその辺にいるらしいです。– But I hear the two older chicks’ chirping noises from this bush, so they must be in there.

でも、この子はどうしたらいいんでしょう。鳴きながら一生懸命羽を広げて塀の壁をよじ登ろうとするんですが、うまくいきません。 – And this little one, what can we do?  It tried so hard to go up the fence by stretching its wings but couldn’t make it off the ground.  It simply keeps chirping.

お母さんの声が聞こえる方に向かって必死に何回も何回も挑戦してます。 – The challenge was going up on top of the fence where it’s mother’s voice kept calling from.  Every attempt was as if it was the last chance.

塀は高すぎます。このままでは死んでしまうかもしれないので、助けてあげようかバンちゃんと何回も相談しました。 – The fence was too high for it.  Banchan and I discussed many times if we should attempt to help it or not because it might die if the attempt didn’t work.

ただ、一つだけ希望があったのは、お母さんたちはまだ近くにいるということ。お父さんは木の上から信号を送り続けています。 – The only hope we had was that the parents were still there.  The mother was on top of the fence, and father was on a branch of a tree nearby and they both kept calling for their chick.

その後、本当に突然でした。赤ちゃんはベンチの上に飛び乗ることに成功して、そこからホップを繰り返して塀の上にたどり着けました。やった〜！奇跡の様。その後はもう木の中に隠れてしまったので2度と見つけることはできませんでした。 – After a while, suddenly, the chick succeeded to hop on a nearby bench, then hop onto the next level, and finally landed on the fence.  Hooray!  It was like a miracle.  We would never see the chick again after it went into that tree.

あー、良かった！と安堵すると共に、ちょっぴり淋しいです。6月の初めから7月半ばまでワクワクをありがとう！ – It’s a big relief, but at the same time, we will miss it so much.  Thank you wren family for giving us excitement and hope from beginning of June till mid July!

 

ミソサザイ、成長が早いね – Wren’s Chicks Grow Fast

とても歩けそうもないミソサザイの赤ちゃんたちでしたが、早いものです。もう、結構活動し始めてます。 – Wren’s chicks were so fragile and couldn’t do much but sleep and eat, but now they have started moving around more.

太陽の光を浴びて、気持ち良さそう〜。 – It looks so cozy there in the sunshine.

あはっ、髪飾りつけて新しいヘアスタイルですか？ – Wow, a new hairdue with hair decoration?

アインシュタイン風かなぁ。 – Or, Einsteine style?

そうか、スクルージ伯父さんだ！ – Got it, it’s Uncle Scrooge style!

からかわないでよ〜！羽が生えて来てるのにまだ産毛が取れないだけなんだから。 – Don’t tease me!  I already have feathers now but my old downy hair won’t come off yet. 

ほら、もうこんなに羽が生え揃ってるでしょ？ – See?  I have already such a nice set of feathers.

前から見ても、結構イケてるでしょ？ – Here is my front.  Am I good looking or what?

わー、もうお兄ちゃんは枝の上に乗ってるって。 – It’s time to get moving.  Oldest brother has already hopped onto a branch!

でも、難しそうだそ・・・ – but, it’ looks so hard…

ちょっと高いな。できるかなぁ。 – It’s so high.  Not sure how I can get up there…

早く上がっておいで！枝の上は気持ちいい風が吹いてるし。 – Hurry, come up, my younger brother!  It feels so good to be up on the branch with a nice breeze blowing.

裏庭の様子が、少しおかしいと思っていたんです。 – It was not a usual day in our backyard.

なぜか、ミソサザイが一箇所から離れない。こっちを向いては鳴いてみたり、 – Somehow, the Wren didn’t want to fly away from one particular spot.  It looked in my direction and chirped…

左を向いては鳴いてみたり。 – then turned left and chirped in that direction…

そーっと、そーっと、バラの根元を覗いてみると、わ〜っ！ – Shhhh, looking into the lower part of a rose bush, ever so quietly, we found them!!!

1、2、３羽もいる！赤ちゃんたちを守っていたんですね。お疲れ様です。 – One, two, and three chicks!  The wren was protecting its babies.  Good job!

まだ眠ってばかりのミソサザイ赤ちゃん。ところで、巣箱の方はどうしちゃったんでしょうねぇ。使ってたとばかり思ってたのに。 – They don’t do much, they simply sleep a lot.  By the way, I wonder why they didn’t use the birdhouse?  I thought they were using it.

バラの低木の奥の方なので、安全そうですが、大丈夫かなぁ？翼の下から赤い肌が見えてるし、蛇とか来てもまだ逃げられないよ。 – It seems somewhat safe down there at the deeper part of the rose bush, but there is no protection for them, although they are well hidden.  Can you see its pink skin under the wings?  No way they can run away from a snake, for example.

爽やかな朝は　- For a Pleasant Morning

爽やかな朝にはロシアンセージがいい。 – Russian sage goes so well for a pleasant morning, 

そよ風に揺れて、気持ちがいい。 – Swaying in the gentle breeze, it makes me feel so good. 

ねえ、一緒にダンスしようよ。 – Hey, listen.  Let’s dance together.

今日がもっと楽しくなりそうだよ。 – It will make you feel even better for the rest of the day.

Lesser Goldfinch ヒメキンヒワたちが花から花へと飛び交う姿はまるでダンスをしているみたい。そんなな朝でした。 – Lesser Goldfinches flew from one branch to the other in the Russian sage, which gave me the impression that they were dancing in the flowers.  It was such a pleasant morning today.
