近づいてみると、なんと、チャックワラトカゲでした。 Slowly we went closer to it, Yes, it’s a Chuckwalla lizard!
全長45cm、ヒーラモンスターに次いで大きいトカゲです。ヒーラは毒を持っていますが、チャックワラは持っていません。そこが違いでしょうか。 It’s 18 inches long. I’ve heard that this makes it the second largest lizard in South West in North America after the Gila Monster. The big difference from a Gila Monster is that the Chuckwalla is not venomous, while the Gila is.

翌日、再びチャックワラトレイルのチャイロツキヒメハエトリの雛たちを訪れました。今度は100-400ｍｍのレンズ持参です。鳥たちをまともに撮れて気持ちがいい。 We visited the Say’s Phoebe chicks at the Chuckwalla trail the very next day. I carried the 100-400mm lens this time. What a relief that I can capture decent Phoebe pictures with it.
24時間も経っていないのに、なんと雛の目が開いてい増田。小鳥たちの成長は早いです。 It’s amazing that the chick’s eyes were opened this time, less than 24 hours since the day before. Their growth is astonishingly fast.
ビデオも撮りましたが、重いレンズなのでブレブレです。三脚を持っていけばよかったんですが、3kmの距離を重い三脚を担いで行く事は、ちょっと苦しすぎますね。 I managed to record a few videos, but I wished I could have my tripod for it because it’s way too heavy to hold the camera and the lens even a few seconds still. But it’s not so realistic for me to carry such a heavy tripod together with heavy lens to get to the nest, walking two miles on the dirt trail.
ヒーラモンスターばかり追いかけていた私たちですが（依然として目撃できてません）、今年になってからまだリクガメに出会っていなかったことに気がつきました。そこで早速チャックワラトレイルを歩いて来ました。約7km。 We’ve been preoccupied on the Gila Monster and forgot about the Desert tortoises. We haven’t seen them this year yet. So we decided to hike on the Chuckwalla trail for about 4 miles.
今日のレンズは 24-70mmです。リクガメですから 800mmレンズは必要ありません。でも、結局リクガメに出会うこともなく、鳥のざわめきも見逃して、ちょっとしょげていた時でした。I brought my 24-70mm lens today because I wanted to capture tortoises. I don’t need an 800mm lens for that. But we couldn’t find any tortoises. So then I was a little upset because I missed all the bird activity without the long lens.
こんな岩の中から鳥の鳴き声が聞こえて来ました。 But then, I heard constant chirping coming from this rock.
鳴き声が逃げて行かないように、そーっと、ゆっくり近づいていきました。岩の中に入って振り返ってみると、いた！産まれたばかりの幼鳥です。 We stealthily walked towards the sound, hoping that whatever was making it did not run away. When I looked inside, then from the inside looked back towards the entrance, OMG! The source of the noise was there, newly born chicks!
きっと孵化してからあまり時間が経っていないんですね。まだ、目が開いてません。でも、鳴き声は威勢よかったですよ。I assume they hatched not so long ago because their eyes weren’t opened yet. But their chirping voices were quite loud.
この子達は一体誰の子供でしょうか。それを確かめるため、洞窟から出てお母さんが餌を咥えてくるのを待ちました。 Whose babies were they? In order to find out who their parents were, we went out from the cave, and waited for the parents to come back to them with food.
もう〜、望遠レンズが無いことを再び悔やみました。この姿でわかるでしょうか。 I couldn’t express enough how much I regretted not bringing my long lens. Can you identify who it is with this shot?
ボコボコの山道を走るオフロードに久しぶりに出かけました。 We went out for an off-road drive. It has been a while since our last time doing this.
早朝の涼しい時間はもう過ぎていたので、あまり野生動物には会えませんでした。でも、遠くジャシュアツリーの上に何か見える。 It was already past the cool morning hours, so we didn’t see much wildlife. But we saw something at a far distance on a Joshua tree.

さて、次の方はコットンウッドの林にいたアカオノスリです。崖に巣を作るのとばかり思っていたら、コットンウッドの木の中にも作るとバンちゃんが言っていました。 And the next bird was a Red-tailed Hawk in the cottonwood tree forest. I thought they only nest on the walls of tall cliffs, but Banchan told me that they also nest on cottonwood trees.

私の予想はメスです。根拠はツノは長いけど細い事です。それに、この顔、お母さんらしいです。（笑） My guess is it’s a female longhorn. The reason is the thin horns although they are long. Besides, the face looks like a mother. (lol)
今日もヒーラモンスターを求めてハイキングです。いつの間にかクレオソートブッシュの黄色い花は白いフワフワ綿毛になっていました。 We hiked again today in our search for a Gila monster. Without knowing it, the yellow flowers of Creosote bush have now changed to soft cotton-like white balls.
それはローズマリーの木の横で突然起こりました。 It happened right next to the rosemary bush.

トカゲがガレージの横を注意深くローズマリーの木の方向に歩いて来ました。そして、ローズマリーの木の30ｃｍぐらい前で立ち止まりました。何か躊躇しているような催眠術にかかったような様子。 A lizard was walking along the garage door towards our rosemary bush. And he froze about 10 inches in front of the rosemary bush. It seems that he was hypnotized by something.
その間1秒、ヘビが突然木の中からジャンプしてトカゲに襲いかかりました。Only a second or so later, a snake jumped out from the rosemary bush and attacked the lizard.
トカゲは地面から30ｃｍ以上ジャンプして去っていきました。ヘビはスルスルとローズマリーの木の中に消えていきました。 The lizard jumped up high as well about 10 inches and ran away. The snake also slithered away into the rosemary bush.
私には一瞬の出来事で何がどうなったのかわかりませんでした。ただ、ヘビはトカゲを捕まえ損ねたことは理解できました。 I couldn’t comprehend exactly what had just happened. I understood however that the snake failed to catch the lizard.
そして、残ったものは、このシッポ。 And the only thing left at the scene was this lizard tail.
ヘビはトカゲのシッポに噛み付いていたんですね。折れた所がその証拠です。その先の先端はトカゲ自身が命をかけて自分で切り落とした切り口です。 The snake actually bit the lizard tail. The bent section is the proof of it. The tip of the tail is the section the lizard himself released to protect his life.
家のガレージの前での短くも一大格闘劇でした。 It was a very short but grand drama in front of our garage.
ヒーラモンスターを求めて再びスノーキャニオン州立公園に行きました。 We went to Snow Canyon State Park again to find a Gila monster.

ヒーラモンスターを探し求めてハイキングに出かけています。目撃情報を元に同じ場所と時間に行っても見つかりません。We’ve been looking for a Gila Monster ever since we moved to this area. But so far we have had no luck seeing one even though we pay close attention to information from others who have, and go to the same places at the same times.
でも、その代わり、意外な発見もあります。北アアメリカに生息するアマツバメの巣はその一例です。スイスイと非常に早く飛び回るので未だかつてカメラに収めたことがありませんでした。でも、今回成功しました。なぜなら、空を飛び回るアマツバメを追いかける代わりに、巣にフォーカスしていたからです。。以下は飛び立った瞬間です。 Instead, however, we find unexpected things. The nest of a White-throated Swift was one of them. They fly so fast, swiftly in fact, as the name indicates. So I could never capture them in my camera before. But I succeeded this time because I targeted the nest rather than chasing it around in the air. The picture below is the moment it flew out from the nest.

雛鳥は2羽。玄関のポーチの天井から下がっているランプチェーンに作られているので、とても高く、下からは雛鳥の嘴しか見えませんでした。 Two chicks were in a tiny nest attached to the chain for a pendant light over the front porch. We could see only the chicks’ beaks because the nest was so high.
でも、お母さんがヒナに食べ物をあげるシーンをビデオに収めることができました。以下、ご覧ください。食べ物をあげた後のお母さんの嘴に注目。黄色い花粉がなくなっている。But I was so lucky that I could capture video of the scene with the mommy hummingbird feeding her chicks. See the video below. Pay attention to Mom’s beak. The yellow pollen is gone after the feeding.
