まだ先が見えない雲の中にいる私です。 I am still in the clouds with no way forward.
私の土曜日のマーケットへの出店、3回目が終わりました。結果はコースターが8セット、追加のコースタが2枚でした。 My third time at Saturday’s market is over. The sale numbers were 8 sets of coasters plus 2 additional coasters.
まだ工夫の余地、大いに有りです。でも、品数を少なくして、テーブル1つに集中して、お客様に全面的に話していこうという努力の結果が、少しマシな売上数になりました。 There is still much more room for improvement. However, my efforts to reduce the number of items, concentrate on one table, and talk to customers have resulted in slightly better sales.
「コースターセットの説明書が小さすぎて、年寄りの私には読めないよ。」という、貴重なコメントをお客様からいただきました。こういうコメントは宝です。 I received a valuable comment from a customer, “The descriptions for the coaster sets are too small for me, I’m too old to read them.” Comments like this are gems.
うん、しっかり聞いてるよ。 Yes, I am listening closely.
そうなんです。夜中過ぎまで頑張って、それぞれにショートストーリーを書いてみたんですが、場所の制限を考えて小さくしました。でも、小さくしすぎてしまったようで、意味のないものになってしまったのかもしれません。 That’s right. I worked hard until after midnight to write a short story for each of them, but I printed it small considering the limitations of the space. But I think I made them too small that they ended up being overlooked.
よしよし、もっと改良できます。残念なが次の土曜は行けないけど、再来週までに更なる改良版を作ってみます。 OK, OK, I can make more improvements. Unfortunately, I won’t be able to make it next Saturday, but I’ll try to make further improvements before the following Saturday.
先週の土曜日のマーケットの売り上げは、コースターセットが4つ。それだけでした。 Last Saturday’s market sales were only four coaster sets. That’s it.
それなりに人の注意はひいたようですが、売れませんでした。 It seemed that my coasters attracted a decent amount of attention, but did not sell well.
今回は、コースターを一枚ずつ、洗濯バサミでワイヤーラックに吊るす方法を考えていましたが、ワイヤーに溝のあるバーをつけてみてはどうかという素晴らしいバンちゃんの提案で、試作品を作ってみました。 I had planned to hang the coasters, one at a time, on a wire rack with clothespins, but Banchan gave me a wonderful suggestion to attach a slotted bar to the wire-wall. So I made a prototype.
うまくいきそうなので、黒い溝のあるバーを購入し、切ったりやすりがけをしたりして、スーパーグルーで固定しました。 It seemed to work, so I bought a black grooved bar, cut and sanded it, and secured it with super glue.
これでうまくいくかもしれないと、自信を持って土曜日に臨みましたが、結果は4セットしか売れず、私の自信は半分萎んでいました。 I went into Saturday’s market confident that this might work, but the result was that I sold only four sets, and my confidence dropped to about half.
親しくなった競争相手の写真家ご夫婦の所に行って、今日もあまり売れていないと、少しぼやいてみました。 I went over to a competing photographer couple I have made friends with and blurted out a bit that I wasn’t selling very well again.
彼らはもう10年以上、毎週末この場所で売り続けているそうです。その間には色々なことがあり、展示の仕方や、写真の印刷の仕方、サイズなど、様々な工夫を凝らしてここまで来た話をしてくれました。 They have been selling at this location every weekend for over 10 years now. They told me that a lot had happened in that time, and that they had come this far with various innovations in the way they display their products, the way they print their photos, the size, and so on.
それに比べると、私はまだ3回目しか出展してない。改良の余地はまだまだたくさんあるはずなんだなーと、反省しました。そして、ある言葉を思い出しました。 In comparison, I have only presented my stuff three times. I reflected on the fact that there must still be a lot of room for improvement. Then I remembered a Japanese word.
雲外蒼天 (the literal translation is “Out of the clouds, blue sky spreads towards heaven.”}
「混沌とした雲の中では何も見えないけれど、その向こうには真っ青に広がる空がある。だから、今は力を蓄える時。やがて力強く成長した翼で雲を突き抜けられる時がきっとくる。その時は、大きく広がる青空に、高く高く、羽ばたこう！」というのが私の解釈です。 Here is my interpretation of the word: You can’t see anything amidst the chaotic clouds, but beyond the clouds is the bright blue sky. So now is the time to save your strength. The time will surely come when you will be able to break through the clouds with your powerful wings. When that time comes, you will flap your wings high and high into the vast blue sky!
そこで、再びアイディアを絞り出すことにしました。 So I decided to squeeze another idea out again.
バンちゃんの素晴らしいアイディアももらって、4枚セットのコースターを展示する棚のプロトタイプを作ってみました。 I also got some great ideas from Banchan and made a prototype of a shelf to display a set of four coasters.
3種類のプロトタイプの中から、一番簡素で、折りたたみも簡単で、運びやすい形を選びました。 Of the three prototypes, I chose the one that was simplest and easiest to fold and carry.
マジックテープを使うことにより、平に折りたたみできるようになっています。 Velcro allows it to fold flat for transporting and to stay upright for displaying.
棚は全部で6個。 I made six shelves in total.
もっと作ってもいいんですが、今週末は21セットある中の6セットだけを展示するつもりです。 I could make more, but this weekend I intend to display only 6 of the 21 sets.
そして、それぞれのセットにお客様に読んでもらえるよう、私の想いを託して時間が許す限り、ショートストーリーをを書こうと思っています。 And I will write short stories as time permits, with my thoughts and feelings on each set for people to read.
さあ、どうなるか、また土曜日が待ち遠しくなって来ましたよ！ Let’s see what happens, I’m starting to look forward to Saturday again!
ジョンデンバーのトリビュートコンサートに行って来ました。ここで言うトリビュートとは敬意を表して行われるコンサートのことです。 I went to the John Denver tribute concert. A tribute in this context is a concert held in honor of.
Chris Collins という方がジョンデンバーそっくりな姿で登場していたので、昔を懐かしく思い出してしまいました。実は、ジョンのコンサートには日本で2回、カリフォルニアのUCバークレーで一回行っています。彼の熱烈なファンではないですが、いくつかの彼の作る歌には共感します。 A person named Chris Collins appeared as a John Denver look-alike, which made me remember the old days fondly. Actually, I have been to John’s concerts twice in Japan and once at UC Berkeley in California. I am not an ardent fan of his, but I can relate to many of the songs he wrote.

会場全体で大合唱です。特に「太陽を背に受けて」の歌を歌いながら、「そうなんだよね。こんな風に心に響く写真が撮りたかったんだよね。」と、思い出しました。彼の歌は写真を撮り始めた頃のことを思い出させてくれました。 The entire audience sang along in chorus. Especially while singing the song “Sunshine on my shoulders,” I remembered something important to me. “That’s right. I want to take pictures that touch my heart like this.” I was reminded of the time when I first started taking pictures with his song in mind.
毎週土曜日に開かれる野外マーケットに再び参加しました。前回のように売り上げゼロではなかったです。以下が売れた品です。 I once again participated in the open-air market held every Saturday. I did not have zero sales like last time. Below are the items sold.
4枚セットのコースターが3個。 Three sets of four coasters.
1枚のコースターを2枚。 Two one-piece coasters.
鍋つかみを3個。 Three pot holders.
値段を下げまくったので、鍋つかみは6ドルの赤字となり、カードリーダーの手数料なども差し引くと、合計で10ドルの収入となりました。ただ、出店する参加料金が20ドルで、（バンちゃんと二人で2ヶ所借りているので60ドル。それを彼の方が多くの場所をとっているので私は20ドルにしてもらってます。）その出費も加えると、この日の収入はマイナス10ドルとなりました。 Since I lowered the price so much, I lost $6 for the pot holders, and after deducting the card reader fee, etc., I made a total of $10. However, the entry fee to open a booth was $20. (Banchan and I rented two spaces for $60. He is using more than half of the total space, so we agreed that I pay $20.) After adding that expense, my income for the day was minus $10.
もっと売れる事を期待して、値段を下げられる最低限まで下げたのに、この結果となりました。 I lowered the price to the minimum I could afford in hopes of selling more, but this was the result.
ここは野外コンサートがある会場の駐車場です。だから将来の歌手の卵も練習のためにやって来て、ガンガン歌いまくってます。 The market is held in the parking lot of a venue where outdoor concerts are held. So future singers come here to practice and sing their hearts out.
バンちゃんはすでにEtsyに彼の商品を出しています。私はやはりウェブサイトを立ち上げたいです。その為には時間と労力が必要なので、できるまで、市場調査の意味も含めて諦めずに売る練習をします。。 Banchan already has his products on Etsy. I still want to set up a website. This requires time and effort, so until I can do it, I will continue to practice selling without giving up, to at least do market research!
さて、私の10Kのレースの日も近づいています。コースにはすでに当日は道路閉鎖のサインが出ていました。ちょっと元気ないですが、これから走ってきます。 Well, the day of my 10K race is approaching. There were already signs on the course saying that the road was closed for the day. I’m a bit down, but I’m going to run now.
今日、走りましたが、8kmぐらい走ってばてました。ただ、リクガメ君が道路を横断している所に居合わせて、嬉しくなりました。車に轢かれないように、しばらく見守っっていました。 Today, I ran, but I was pretty tired so I stopped running after about 8 km. However, I was happy to see a tortoise crossing the road. We waited a while for it to cross the road to make sure it was not run over by a car.
さて明日、また土曜日のマーケットにお店出します。 Well, tomorrow I will be back to set up our booth at the Saturday market.
新しいアイテムも加えたり、お値段もまた更に検討したりしていたら、1週間があっという間に経ってしまいました。まだ準備することは山ほどあるんですが、焦らずに行きます。 A week has flown by as I was adding new items and further examining prices again. There are still so many things to do, but I decided that I am not in a hurry.

先週の土曜日のマーケットに出店を出しましたが、売り上げゼロでした。2回目ということもあり、それなりに準備したつもりでしたが、予想外の結果となりました。 We participated at last Saturday’s market but made zero sales. This was the second time, and I thought I had prepared accordingly, but the result was unexpected.
8×8インチ、5×5インチ、そして3.75インチのコースターの3種類の大きさの写真を取り揃えました。 Three sizes of photos are available: 8×8″, 5×5″, and 3.75″ coasters.
納得できず、参加されていた5人の写真家さん全てに、売り上げを聞いてまわりました。驚くことに、5人の方全員が私と同じように何も売れなかったという回答でした。 Unsure how to interpret it, I went around to all five participating photographers and asked them about their sales. To my surprise, all five responded that they had sold nothing, just as I had.
バンちゃんと二つのテントをシェアしてます。私の作品は主に右のテーブル二つ。 I share two tents with Banchan. My works are mainly the two tables on the right.
波があるから、気にせず次週に期待すればいいだけだと励まされました。競争相手ではあるけれど、なんとなく苦しい時を一緒に乗り越えていく同志のような親近感が生まれてきて、嬉しくなってしまいました。 They encouraged me saying that it comes in waves, so I should just not worry about it and hope for the next week. Although we are competitors, I somehow began to feel a sense of closeness with them, as if we were comrades who were going through a difficult time together, which made me happy.
この出店ビジネスは出費ばかり嵩んでまだ軌道に乗っていないんですが、まあ、いい人たちといい環境に恵まれて、結構楽しいです。きっとそのうちにうまくいく事を信じます。 This business is still not on track due to all the expenses, but I am blessed with good people and a good environment, and I am having a lot of fun. I am sure it will work out in time.
人生初の売る側としてのマーケット参加でした。 It was the first time in my life that I have been a vendor in a market.
早朝、まだテントも張られていない会場です。 It is early in the morning, and the tents have not yet been set up at the venue.
野外劇場の駐車場が開場です。 The parking lot of the outdoor theater is open.
初めてだったので、「まずは参加してみる」というのが目的でした。 Since it was my first time, my goal was to join first and see how it goes.
それでも、コースターセットが10個ぐらい売れるだろうと期待していました。 Still, I expected to sell about 10 coaster sets.
ところが、現実は厳しい。 The reality, however, was harsh.
4時間お店を開いていて、たった3個しか売れませんでした。 I had the store open for four hours and sold only three coaster sets.
まず、値段が高すぎたことが大きな原因かと思います。＄10下げた途端に3個立て続けに売れたからです。 I think the main reason was that the price was too high. As soon as I lowered the price by $10, I quickly sold 3 sets.
でも、売れなかった理由はその他にもたくさんあります。テントの後ろの面にカバーを貼って、駐車場のバックグラウンドから切り離すべきでした。写真があること自体、気づかない人が大半でしたから。 But there are many other possible reasons why they didn’t sell. I should have put a cover on the back side of the canopy to separate it from the background of the parking lot. Most people didn’t even realize the larger pictures were there.
また、テーブル一つという簡素なお店だったので、もっと派手な呼び込みサインが通路に必要でした。 Also, my booth was simple, with only one table set far back, so more signs are needed further forward to bring people in.
レイバーデーという休日が終わったばかりとあって、お客様の量も少なかったかな。 I think the number of customers was low because the Labor Day holiday had just ended.
こういうことにはど素人の私ですから、準備をしている時から学習することばかりでした。でも、実際にお客様一人一人と接して物を売るということは、また別の次元で奥が深いです。 I am an amateur at this sort of thing, so I had a lot to learn from the very beginning of my preparation. But actually interacting with each customer and selling something is a whole different level.
お店を出しているすべての方々の努力が少し理解できました。現実はそんなに簡単ではない。2週間後、また頑張ってみます。 I now understand a little more about the effort of all the people who are setting up a store. The reality is not so easy. I will try again in two weeks.
私たちの住む町、セイントジョージでは45℃以上の猛暑が続き、町中がサウナ室になっていました。それも悪くはないのですが、しばらくブライアンヘッドに避難していました。ここは標高3,300m、冬はスキーが楽しめる保養地です。In our town, Saint George, the heat was so intense, over 110F, that the whole town was a sauna room. That wasn’t too bad, but we retreated to Brian Head for a while.
家からほんの1時間半の場所なのに気温はグッと低く、夜は10℃以下になります。家では窓を開けることはなく、冷暖房調整システムに任せているので、このロッジに冷房調整がないのに驚きました。部屋には暖房調整と素敵な暖炉まであるのに冷房調整がないのは、その必要がないからなんですね。窓が開けられていて、それで十分快適でした。 Even though we were only an hour and a half from home, the temperature was below 50F at night. I was surprised that there was no room air conditioning in this lodge, as I never open the windows at home and just let the heating/cooling control system do the work for us. The room does have heating as well as a nice fireplace, but there was no air conditioning because there is almost never a need for it. The windows were open and that was comfortable enough.
ここからシーダーブレイクス国定公園までは、車でほんの10分程度の距離です。ブライス国立公園と同じクラロン地層なので、綺麗な土柱が立ち並ぶ渓谷を見下ろすことができます。下の写真は、夕日が沈んだ後の景色です。 From here, Cedar Breaks National Monument is only a 10-minute drive away. It is in the same Claron formation as Bryce Canyon National Park, so you can look down into a canyon lined with beautiful hoodoos. The photo below shows the view after sunset.

雪が降って一度死んでしまったけど、復活したバタフライブッシュと黄色いデイジー。 Butterfly bush and yellow daisies. The daisies died when it snowed, but they came back to life.咲き始めたばかりのウチワサボテン The Prickly Pear cactus Just started blooming.Desert Bird of Paradiseももうすぐ花が咲きそうです。その向こうのスパニッシュブルームはすでに真っ盛り。 Desert Bird of Paradise will soon be in bloom. Behind it, the Spanish broom is already in full bloom.デルフィニウムも元気。 Very healthy Delphinium.
ということで、家のペンキ塗り替えをしました。この家は築20年だそうで、4年前に購入した時にはすでに塗り替えが必要な時でした。 So we painted the house. The house is 20 years old, and when we bought it 4 years ago, it was already in need of a fresh coat of paint.
同じ色を塗り替えただけなのに新品の家になったみたいです。気持ちいい！ It’s like a brand new house even though we just painted it the same color as before. It feels good!
私たちの家はこの火山のような噴水を中心に、渦巻くように丸く立っています。 そんな曲線美が気に入って購入しました。この中心も綺麗になって、家が花と一緒に春を楽しんでいるみたい。 Our house stands in a swirling circle around this volcanic fountain. We bought it because we like such curving beauty. This center is now beautiful, too, and it looks like the house is enjoying spring with the flowers.
ただ、砂漠地帯ということもあり、修理が常に必要です。そして修理し始めると、またさらに別の問題が浮上して、ますます修理することになったりします。 However, being in a desert area, repairs are always needed. And when we start repairing one thing, other problems surface and we end up repairing more and more.
このパティオの大きくカーブしたヒサシが水害で剥がれてきました。作り替え必要となり、家の塗装工事も90％完成で、後の10％はもう少し待つ必要がありそうです。 The large curved eave over this patio is pealing off due to water damage. It needs to be rebuilt, so the house painting is 90% complete, with the remaining 10% needing to wait a little longer.
ところで、一昨年スタートしたバスルームのリモデルですが、99％完成。1％は未だにコントラクター待ちという「いつまで待てる？」ゲームみたいな世界です。 By the way, the bathroom remodel we started the year before last is 99% complete, with 1% still waiting for a contractor. It’s a waiting game.
焦らず気長に待ちますが、このヒサシもそんなことにならないようにポジティブに待ちます。 I will wait patiently, but I will wait positively so that this eave project will not be like the bathroom project.
夏用に一昨日花を植えたばかりなのに、今日、また雪でした。 It snowed again today. I had just planted flowers the day before yesterday for the summer.
移動できる花は屋根のあるところに動かしましたが、動かせないものは、仕方がありません。無事を願うのみです。 I moved the flowers that could be moved to a place under the roof. But those that could not be moved, I had no choice, I can only hope that they will be safe.
この雪ですが、ツブツブのアラレ雪、結構早く解けます。向こう10日間の天気予報は晴れか曇りで、気温は上がっていくらしい。 This snow was a mix of hail and snow. It melts quickly though. The weather forecast for the next 10 days is sunny or cloudy, and the temperature is supposed to rise.
なんとまあ、冬の締めくくりというところでしょうか。さあ、これからは快晴で行こうね！ What a way to end the winter! Now, let’s go with clear skies from now on!
ヘアカットの帰り道、久しぶりに見た、晴れの景色。 This is a view I saw on the way back home from a haircut. It’s been a long time since seeing such a nice view as the rainy days continued.
この地域では、雨が3月の終わりまで降り続いていることは、とても珍しいことらしい。 Many people said that it’s very unusual in this region for the rains to continue until the end of March.

今日の午後は何をしようかな。 Let me see… what shall I do this afternoon?
春が近いと思っていたら、寒い日が続きます。 I thought Spring is so close, but it went back to cold winter days.
窓ガラスにまで氷が張り付いて、びっくり。でも、なんだか良い感じ。 I was shocked to see that ice was on the window glass. but it’s kind of nice.
アラレのような雪と風で、外に出られません。 We couldn’t go out because it was icy, snowy, and windy.
翌朝、外を見たらMVロックの前の丘に雪が積もっていました。 When I saw outside our bedroom the next morning, there was snow at the hill leading up to MV Rock.
わーい、球形の飾りの上にも雪が積もって、帽子をかぶっているみたい。 How cute it is to see snow on top of the sphere ornament in the backyard. It’s like it has a snow cap on it.
もう溶け始めていますが、バレルサボテンの上にも雪が残ってました。 It mostly melted away already, but a small amount of snow was still on top of the barrel cactus.
こんな天候なのでピックルボールの練習も中止となっています。こういう時はフィットネスセンターに行けば良いのですが、なぜかゲームにハマっています。 Because of this weather, our pickleball practice was cancelled. I could go to our fitness center, but for some reason, I am quite addicted to a video game now and stay inside all day.
明日はハイキングの予定です。明日天気になーれ！ We have a hike scheduled tomorrow. Let’s hope it will be a nice day tomorrow!
