見知らぬ鳥たちが、塀に飛び乗りやって来た。Unknown birds jumped up onto the wall and came to the backyard.
塀に飛び乗れるだけあって、もうずいぶん大きい。産毛がまだチラホラと見えるけど、シッポも、カンムリもしっかりしてる。They are already large enough that they can jump on the wall. Although I can see baby hair here and there, they already have solid tails and crowns.
それに比べると、うちの子達はまだ彼らの半分ぐらいの大きさ。まるで中学生と幼稚園児みたいだ。Compared to them, our chicks in the backyard are still so tiny, about half of their size. It looks like they are Junior high students, and our chicks are kindergarten kids.
たった 1.5 時間走っただけで、雪がまだ残っている山道を歩けるなんて最高です。It takes us only 1.5 hours of driving to get here where we could enjoy hiking the trail where snow still remains. How lucky we are!
1500 年も生きている老木は、いつ見てもダンスしてるように楽しそう。The old trees that have lived 1500 years look always to be so happily dancing.

雨が時折パラつく日でしたが、時々光る景色を求めて清々しいひと時を過ごしてきました。It was a day with an occasional sprinkles, but we enjoyed it very much by looking for shining places illuminated by sunset light.

最近メグロトウヒ君は主のような振る舞いをしています。Abert’s Towhee acts like he owns the backyard these days.
水鉢を独り占めにしたり、ハウスフィンチを追い出したり。挙げ句の果てにカメラまで倒してしまいます。そのおかげで尻尾の長いウィップテイルやウズラの子供の映像も撮れましたけどね。 水はみんなのものなのよ！He stays there forever at the water bowl, chases away the house finch, and on top of that, he knocks down the camera, as well. Because of that, we could get a video of a Western Whiptail lizard, and a cute quail chick, but he should behave himself. Share! OK?
ズアカカンムリウズラのお父さんは、子供達がまだ起きる前から警護していました。Gambel’s quail dad was already up and guarding on the backyard fence even before his family wakes up.
ウズラに餌をあげ始めてから気づいたことがあります。同じ餌を食べに来る他の住人がいることです。 I found something since I have started feeding quails. There are more residents in the backyard coming to eat the same food and drink other than quails.
トカゲは昆虫類が主食だと思ってたので意外でした。買ってきたウズラフードの中に、トカゲが好きそうなものが入っているんでしょうか。 Lizards eat insects. So, I was surprised that they also eat quail food. I am not sure the ingredients of the quail food from the pet-shop, but there must be something lizards also like to eat included in it.
メチャクチャ暑いので、ウズラもトカゲもぐったり。だから日影もシェアしています。今日も45度になるそうです。水の補給をしっかりして、生き延びてね。 It’s so hot that chicks, as well as lizards, don’t want to move. So they share the shade for resting. It will be 110F again today. Drink plenty of water and live through today!
3 日間留守にしていました。その間、何が起こったのでしょうか。ヒナの数が11匹から半分以下の5匹に激減していました。何回数えても5匹しかいない。We were away for three days. I wondered what had happened in those days. There were 11 chicks before, but now only five remain. I counted them so many times but still only five of them.
翌朝、久しぶりにロードランナーがフワリと裏庭に降り立ったと思ったら、ヒナを一匹食べてしまいました。何？何が起こったのかしばらく理解できませんでした。The next morning, a roadrunner entered the backyard. I was happy to see it because I haven’t seen roadrunners for a while. But then, it happened so suddenly that I couldn’t understand what was going on at first. He picked up a chick and ate it.
自然は過酷です。Nature is cruel.
でも、ただ、受け入れるしかありません。But we simply must accept it.
裏庭は塀で囲まれているので、鳥と2cm以下の生物以外は中に入れません。また、毎日スプリンクラーで水撒きしているおかげで、水々しい植物や虫もそれなりに確保できます。その意味ではとても安全な場所です。それでもこの惨事。 The backyard is very safe compared to the rough world out there. It is surrounded by a wall, only birds and creatures smaller than an inch can enter. And sprinklers run everyday so that plenty of fresh greens and small insects are there. But yet such a shocking incident happened.
ヒナたちが将来ここから出て直面しなければいけない過酷な世界を思い、ずっと考えていた事がありました。 I’ve been thinking about them and their future for awhile what is the best thing for them.
門を開いて外に出してあげた方がいいのかな。 Should I open the gate and let them go?
水と少しのエサをあげてもいいのかな。 Can I feed them some food and water?
迷います。でも、あまりにも無防備で非力なヒナたちを見ていて決心しました。 I am frustrated, but decided what to do while watching such vulnerable chicks.
まずはもう少し大きくなるまで生き延びる事が一番大事です。これから45度ぐらいの暑さがしばらく続くようです。その間だけでも水と少しの食料を供給することにしました。 It’s important to survive first. Considering that we will have 110F temperatures for awhile, I decided to give them food and water for awhile.
その後まだ生き延びていられたら、もっと逞しくなっているはずです。まだ塀の上に飛び立てないようなら、門を開いて外の世界に出してあげましょう。If they could survive through those days, it means they are strong enough. If they still can’t hop on the fence, I will open the gate and let them go out to the world.
毎日走り回っている元気なヒナたち。いつになるんでしょうか。無事、この裏庭から巣立ちしていって欲しいです。The hatchlings are running around the backyard everyday. I wonder when it will be, but I hope they grow up well together and fledge here safely.
ラップトップの故障でしばらくお休みしていたら、春はどんどん過ぎていってしまいました。ここ、セイントジョージはもう夏のように暑い日が時々訪れますが、まだ春の名残も残してます。While I was taking time off from writing posts for a while because my laptop broke down, Spring has almost gone away. It is nearly summer already, but I can still find some signs of Spring remaining here and there.
6月初め、裏庭の手入れをしていたら、急にウズラお母さんが低木の中から大慌てで飛び出してきました。私の勘が当たっていれば、嬉しい贈り物。早速 Ring カメラを設置してみました。以下、6月3日の午後1時の映像です。It was the beginning of June. When I was gardening in backyard, a quail came out from a bush suddenly as if it was startled. I immediately took it as a lovely present. So we set up a Ring security camera there. The video below is from around 1:00 pm on June 3rd.
思いがけない春の贈り物に、久しぶりに興奮しました。日本語名はズアカカンムリウズラといいます。ヒナを数えたら11匹もいました。I was so excited with the unexpected gift from Spring. I counted the Gambel’s quail chicks. There were 11 of them total.
裏庭の塀のすぐ外にスーッと飛来した後、隣家の屋根に舞い降りました。A Red-tailed Hawk swooped down right outside our backyard wall, then flew up again to perch on the roof of the neighbor’s house.
スクリーンドア越し、飛び立つ前の一瞬に撮れた貴重な一枚。This is a precious shot that I took through a screen door a few seconds before the hawk flew away.
バンちゃん曰く「ウサギのキーっていう呻き声と鷹のピューっていう鳴き声とガサガサで結構な騒動だったみたい。」私がカメラを取りに行っている間、塀越しに聞こえたウサギとアカオノスリの格闘劇を話してくれました。Banchan, who was outside while I ran to get my camera said, “It was quite noisy with squeals from the rabbit and shrieks by the hawk even though it was outside the fence.” What a drama created by the lucky Red-tailed Hawk and the poor rabbit.
今日のアカオノスリのご褒美。でも、私たちにとっても意外なご褒美でした。It was today’s treat. For the hawk that is, but of course, for us as well.
