久しぶりに焼いてみました。 It’s been a while since I baked a Pumpkin cake.
なぜ砂糖が半分も残ったのか気になってレシピを読み返してみたら、私の勘違いでした。通りで甘さ加減が激的に控えめだと思いました。 After baking, I wasn’t sure why I had nearly one cup of sugar left, so I read the recipe again. Silly me, that was my mistake. I made a reduced sugar cake.
それでも、まあまあなお味。5日間かけて、二人で全部食べきってしまいました。 Still, it wasn’t bad. We ate the whole cake completely in five days.
多分、1ヶ月前にサソリのスコットがいなくなりました。これはいなくなる前に蜘蛛を食べているところです。 Probably about a month ago, Scott the scorpion disappeared. The picture below is him eating a spider before he went.
こちらはカエルのフランクです。彼は地上レベルの小さな池で暮らしていました。 This is Frank the frog. He lived in a small pond at ground level.
それが、少し前ごろから、地面レベルの池から 1m ぐらい上で日向ぼっこしているフランクを発見しました。 But then, a little before Scott disappeared, we found Frank at a terrace about three feet above the ground. He looked like he was enjoying the warm sun light.
その後、彼は大胆にもスコットが住んでいる頂上の大池までジャンプして、大海を満喫している様でした。手前にスッコット、その向こうの水の中にフランクがいます。 Soon after that, Frank jumped boldly to the top level, and was enjoying the larger pool even more.

フランクがスコットに食べられちゃうんじゃないかと心配していましたが、どうやらスコットは冬眠のため、噴水から降りて行った様です。残ったフランクは俄然大きな池を行ったり来たり。スコットが暮らしていた所で夜を過ごし、ついに主となりました。 I was worrying about Frank being eaten by Scott, but luckly the time came for Scott to go find a place to hibernate for the winter. So then, the water feature became Frank’s playground entirely on his own. He spent time between rocks where Scott used to live at night.
その後、私たちは忙しくてフランクの観察ができないでいました。でも、ある日、フランクが私たちを観察しているような感じで家の中をうかがっていました。 Then, we forgot about him because we became busy. But one day, I noticed that Frank was sitting close to the edge of the water feature and looking inside the house.
そこで、何ですか？と尋ねると、 So, I asked him, “what’s up?”
どうやら、記念撮影をして欲しそう。 He didn’t say a word but I understood that he wanted me to take portrait pictures.
恐竜のデイノニクスと一緒にいるところや、おすまし顔を撮ってあげました。 I took several pictures like the one being with Deinonychus, and doing a big boy pose.
その後、私たちの留守中にフランクは噴水を降りてどこかに行ってしまいました。きっと、また来てね！ We don’t know when he left the water feature, but I haven’t seen him since the last portrait. Come again next year!
6.1 km 2時間弱のハイキング。 It’s a 3.8 mile, under two hour, hike.
10Kレースの後、あまり体を動かす機会がなかったので、久しぶりの山道は気持ちがいい。タランチュラも気持ちよさそうに歩いていました。 I didn’t have many opportunities to do outdoor activities after the 10K race, so I felt so good simply being there.
鳥の巣を発見しました。小さいので、鷹より小さい鳥が使っていたに違いありません。来年の春、ここで雛が孵化したら観察できるかもしれないと思うと、楽しみが一つ増えました。 We found a bird nest in a hole on the side of a sandstone wall. It’s rather small. So it must be smaller than a hawk for sure, but we have no idea what kind of bird used it. I am already excited to simply think about observing the tiny chicks that may hatch there next spring.
外で体を動かすこと、やっぱり好きです！ Indeed! I love going out there and doing some exercise.
寒くなりました。まだグズグズとベッドの中にいたら、バンちゃんの席立てる様な声が聞こえてきました。 It is getting to be cold these days. I was still dawdling in bed when I heard Banchan’s voice.
「早く、早く、裏庭にハイタカが来てるよ！」 “Come quick! A hawk is in the backyard!”
飛び起きてリビングルームに行くと、いた！ I jumped out from bed, and went to the living room. And I found it.
飛んでいってしまう前にと、レンズ交換もしないまま100mm レンズが付いているカメラを持って、そーっと窓際まで近づきました。 I didn’t want to miss the chance, so without changing the lens, I simply grabbed my camera which happened to have the 100mm prime lens attached, then I quietly hid myself behind a chair.
クーパーハイタカです。 It was a Cooper’s hawk.
多分、まだ幼鳥です。 It was still a juvenile.
窓ガラスを通してでも気づかれてしまい、さっさと飛び立って行ってしまいました。あと5秒居て欲しいと思う気持ちがあった反面、安心したのも事実です。まだ子供でも鋭い警戒心と洞察力を持っていたからです。 As soon as it noticed us even through the window glass, it flew away. Although I wanted it to hang around for only 5 more seconds, I felt relieved because it had keen perceptivity and vigilance even though it’s still a child.
「これから来る厳しい冬を頑張って乗り切るんだよ。来年、逞しい大人になった時、また会おう！ 」”You’ve got to pull through this harsh winter. Then meet us again in the next year when you become a strong adult!”
ハイタカの飛び立つ姿に、元気をもらいました。 The hawk’s strong take-off gave me energy.
西へ、そして東へと一人で1,368km を走りました。高齢の義母の最後のひと時を共に過ごすためでした。 Going to the west, then back to the east, I drove 850 miles total. The purpose was to be there for my mother-in-law’s last moments before her passing.
距離的には日本の本州の最北端から最南端まで走ったことになります。 The round trip distance is roughly equivalent to the distance from the northern tip to the southern tip of Honshu island in Japan.
アメリカで例えたら、ニューヨークからアトランタまで、ヨーロッパで例えれば、マルセイユから巡礼の最終地、サンチアゴ デ コンポステーラまでの距離。 The round trip distance is also equivalent to the distance from New York to Atlanta in the states, or from Marseille to Santiago de Compostela, the destination of the pilgrimage route, in Europe.
いつもと違う景色は刺激を与えてくれます。助手席に座っているんじゃなくて、自分で運転すればなおさらです。 The different views along the way were inspiring. You get those views especially when you drive rather than sitting in the passenger seat.
運転するのは好きではないので、家に帰り着いた時はホッとしました。そして、夕日に向かい改めて義母にお別れの言葉を送りました。 It was a huge relief when I came back home because I don’t like driving. And I sent my mother-in-low my farewell when I saw a gorgeous sunset.
“Bon Voyage!”
10Kレースの後、何だかんだと忙しくしていました。そんな中久しぶりに山登りに出かけることができました。 I was busy with chores after the 10K race, butwe did go on a hike last week
スノーキャニオン州立公園内の道なき道、知る人ぞ知る天国への階段トレイルです。 The trail is called “Stairway to Heaven” inside Snow Canyon State Park, but it’s not on any map because it’s not an official trail.
登ったり、降ったりして奥地に向かいます。 We walked up and down, and went to a deeper section of the park.
ガイドがいたから来られた場所です。ちょっと話がそれますが、ガイドさんの二人もトレイルベストを着ていました。勿論私も。断然、楽！ We couldn’t have found the way without our guides. This is off tangent, but both our guides were wearing trail vests which made me happy. Of course, I was wearing mine. It’s so much easier than a backpack in many ways. I love it.
そして、ここが「天国への階段」と呼ばれるようになった所以の階段のような場所です。 And finally this is the “Stairway to Heaven”. Can you see it looks like a staircase?
馴染みのある風景。そこでみんなでバンザイ。影の記念写真です。 After we got to a familiar place on a ridge, we took a shadow group picture all doing a Banzai pose.
砂丘の様なうねりを見せるナバホ砂岩。こんな景色を後何回見られるのかなと考えると、涙が出てきそう。 Navajo Sandstone shows many different faces. The fine lines like this reminded me of a sand dune and it made me feel a little sentimental. How many more times can I see such beauty?
ところで、ここは有名な映画「明日に向かって撃て！」のシーンにもなった場所です。まさにここにロバートレッドフォードとポールニューマンが立っていたそうです。 By the way, this particular place was used for the movie “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”. Paul Newman and Robert Redford were right here during filming.
映画の中にはザイオン国立公園も遠くに見えるシーンがあります。ロバートレッドフォードの家が公園の近くにありますが、きっと映画の撮影の時、好きになったんですね。I could recognize Zion National Park in the move as well. I can easily imagine that Robert Redford fell in love with this area so much during the making of this movie, and that’s why he built his house near the park.
5kmの登り降りのたくさんある中級者向けコースです。 The hike was only 3.1 miles but it’s an intermediate hike because you need to go up and down a lot over steep slopes of sandstone rock.
順位は4位でした。でも、タイムは信じられないほど早い、自己最高記録で61分33秒でした。 I was 4th. But the time was unbelievably fast for me, 61:33. It’s my personal best.
10Kを走り始めた時は90分もかかっていたんです。そこからここまで来られたのは、周りの人たちのおかげです。トレーナーに鍛えてもらい、友人に一緒に走ってもらい、そして今日はバンちゃんや友人たちに応援してもらえました。Come to think of it, it took 90 minutes to complete when I started running several months back. I could come this far because all the people around me supported me. My trainer built my muscles, my friend ran with me and showed me how the race goes, and Banchan and my friends came today to cheer me on.
みんなの力で走れたような気がします。声援のパワーって凄いんだ。 I recognized the power of cheering. I could run well because of my precious friends’ support.
悔いなし！ No regrets!
さあ、次はダンスだ！ So, my next focus is Dance!
裏庭の奥の方、滅多に行くことのない場所に、ローズマリーの低木が生えています。その枝の中に大きくて綺麗なクモの巣ができていました。 A very large rosemary bush grows at the very back corner of our backyard. I rarely go there. A large spider web was shining beautifully in between rosemary branches.
コガネグモの親戚グモがその中央に住んでいます。どうやら、せっせと何かしているようです。あら、口のあたりから何かが出ている。 A Banded Garden Spider is the owner of the web. When I saw her, she was busy at work doing something. Something was sticking out from around her mouth.
もっと近寄ってみると、どうやクモの糸を獲物に絡ませているようです。 I tried going closer to her, and found that she was wrapping her thread around her prey.
お腹側。いや、もしかして、獲物を食べてるのかな？ This is a ventral view. It’s also possible that she was eating it.
翌日もう一度見てみると、もう獲物は無くなっていました。 I went there again the next day, but the thing around her mouth was gone then.
巣の近辺を観察してみると、巣の下の方に糸に絡められた何かを発見しました。 I searched for the thing she was working on the day before, and found a thing wrapped by spider web at the bottom of the web.
これから食べられる獲物が入っているのか、すでに食べられてしまった残骸なのか不明です。たった一本の細い糸で巣と結ばれていました。 I have no idea what’s in it. Either her prey is still in it or it’s simply a leftover. It was connected by a thin thread to the web.
自然界は本当に面白い。不思議な事、面白いことが満載です。 Nature is full of mysterious and interesting things that I never get tired of it.
この後に及んで、一昨日から左足膝の下の方が痛くなりました。 From two days ago, the lower part of my left knee started hurting this late in the game.
マッサージをしてもらったり、塗り薬をつけたりしています。 I went to get a massage for it, and applied ointments.
もちろん、走ってません。普通に歩くだけなら痛く無いんです。でも、じっとしていても弱い痛み（1から10の痛みの中の2ぐらい）がジンジンしています。 Of course, I haven’t run. It doesn’t hurt if I walk at a normal speed. But I feel tingling pain (pain level 2 out of 10) even when I am resting.
レースまで、あと3日。絶対に回復すると決めてます。だからストレッチをしたり、庭の虫の観察をしたりして休養します。 It’s only three days to the race. I determined to recover from this by then. So I will continuously stretch, observe bugs in my garden, and rest my legs.
8月半ばから、サソリのスコットが噴水の上に滞在中です。気温が下がってきたのでもうさよならの時期かなと毎日観察してきました。 Since mid August, Scott the scorpion has been staying at our house fountain. Because the temperature is getting lower, everyday I’ve been thinking it’s time to say good-bye to them for the year.
でも、去る様子はなく、夜はこんなに勇ましい姿で噴水の上を活発に動いています。そして、ある日、2匹目のサソリがいることを発見しました。 But it seems it’s not the time yet. In fact, he is quite active at night like this. And one day recently, we found another scorpion on the fountain.
害虫駆除の人たちが、2mmぐらいの子供たちが生まれてくるかもしれないから要注意だと警告してくれました。 Our pest control people warned us that we may start seeing 2mm tiny babies crawling around.
日中はこんな感じ。 His daytime activity is like this.
石の下に潜り込もうとしています。 He goes under a rock.
こうして暗くなるまで動きません。どうりで25年も生きられるわけです。 And doesn’t move at all until dark. No wonder he can live 25 years.
夜になると再び活動し始めるという生活。 He comes out again at night. This is his night life.
スコットも友達も、こんな風にして越冬できるできるのでしょうか。冬眠するとしたらもっと暖かい場所、つまり、家の中を選ぶらしいです。「外にいる限り」何年もいてもらって構わないんですが、家の中まで入ってこられると「困った客人」になってしまいます。害虫駆除の人達が家をガードするためにスプレイしてくれましたが、どこまで効果があるのでしょうか。観察を続けなければ！ I have been wondering a lot if Scott and his friend can live like this throughout the winter. So this is my finding. If they hibernate, they choose warmer places like inside somebodies house!!! For me, that’s absolutely not acceptable. They can be our guests for as many years as they want as long as they are outside. If they want to come in, they will be “Go away now!” guests. The pest control people spray well to guard the inside of our house. Let’s see how well it works. I should continue to monitor them carefully.
レースの日まであと5日。 It’s five more days to race day.
レース当日は、水は持たずに走ろうと思いましたが、最後の2kmが気になったので持って走ることにしました。 I don’t need to carry water when I run the race, but I decided to carry a little because I always want to drink water during the last 2 km.
赤い崖が光っていて、気持ちのいい朝でした。まさにその麓の方向がレースのゴール地点です。見ていたら嬉しくなって、走る意欲が湧いてきました。 The red cliff were shining this morning. And that’s the direction where the finish line for my race will be. For some reason, I felt so light while I was watching watching this scene, and my motivation went up high.
そこで、新しく購入した手持ちボトルを着けて走るテスト、スタート。（写真の手はバンちゃんです。）So I made a test run with the new handheld water bottle. (The hand in the pictures is Banchan’s hand.)
いい感じ。飲んでいくたびにボトルが縮まっていくし軽くなっていくので重さも気になりませんでした。 It’s not bad. As I drink water, the bottle shrinks, and becomes lighter. I had a concern that the weight on my hand might impact my arm fatigue, but I didn’t feel it much when I tried it.
今日は無理せず走りました。水を掴んで走るテスト、成功！ I didn’t push myself hard today. The grip water test was a success.
最近、客の出入りが激しいです。中でも噴水の下の方。 We have quite a few guests these days, especially at the bottom of the water fountain.
この光景、どう見ますか？もしかしてヒキガエルの親子かな？ What do you think of this scene? Is it a toad with its child?
よく見ると、ちょっと違う。こちら、ヒキガエル。 If you look at them carefully, they are slightly different. This is a Toad.
こちら小さいカエル。 And this is a frog.
仲良く共存できるんですね。 It’s nice that they care share the space together.
