Hike 35: スパニッシュウォッシュ Spanish Wash

この日は Red Cliff Desert 保護区内で「ニシアメリカフクロウ」が見られと聞いたので行ってきました。ウロウロしたので正確な距離は分かりませんが、7.5kmを主にスパニッシュウォッシュに沿って歩きました。We went to Spanish wash in Red Cliff Desert Reserve because we heard that an owl had been seen there. We are not quite sure of the exact distance, but it was about 4.5 miles out and back along the Spanish wash.

まず、長いトンネルを通り抜けます。 We went through the long dark tunnel first.

そして、こんな所をズンズン歩いて行きます。 Then, we went through places like this to get to deeper sections.

フクロウが最初に発見された場所がここです。 This was the place where the owl had first been spotted.

でも、残念ながら、全く姿が見えませんでした。 But we didn’t see any sign of owls there, unfortunately.

そこで、再びズンズン進んでいくと、周りの丘が夏に比べて緑色になっているのに気がつきました。苔が最近の雨で青々とし始めたんですね。 So we marched on. Then I realized that the hills were greener than before because the moss was greener.

フカフカしています。 It looks so cushiony.

これの写真にも苔が生えているんですが、よく見ると岩の中を突き抜けて伸びているのが見えます。すごい生命力です。きっとこんな根っこがあと100万年もしたら木の化石になっているのかもしれません。 The picture below also shows the moss, but if you look at it closer, you can see a root stretched through the rock. How awesome to see such vitality. I imagine that it will become petrified wood in a million years.

それから更にズンズン進みましたが、フクロウの姿はついに見つけられませんでした。きっと、年末休暇をとっているのでしょう。 We went on a little further in the wash, but couldn’t find any owls. They must have gone on vacation for the end of the year.

諦めた私たちは、帰途、矢じり探しに集中しました。 So we decided to go back along the same path we came in on, but this time, we focused on looking for arrowheads on the ground.

かつてアメリカ先住民が狩猟のためにたくさん作っていたのでしょう。いくつか発見できました。先端は破れてますが、左端の根元が矢じりであったことを証明してくれます。 I imagine that American indigenous people made many arrowheads for hunting. We found a few. The left side of the sample above indicates that it was an arrowhead, although the tip on the right side was broken off.

ところで、これはなんだと思いますか？ By the way, what do you think these are?

美味しそうでしょ？ Aren’t they delicious looking?

モキマーブルと名付けられているボール状の酸化鉄です。長い年月の後、ナバホ砂岩から鉄分が分離して、鉄が参加することによって赤みを帯び、ボール状になったものです。コンクリーションとも呼ばれています。 They are called “Moqui marbles” or “Moqui balls”. After millions of years, the iron separated from the Navajo sandstone, oxidized, and became a ball. It’s also called a “concretion.”

こちらの写真はモキマーブルがまだ完全に分離されていない段階です。雨が降って水にさらされることにより砂岩の侵食が進むと、ポロリと分離するんですね。面白いです。 The picture below shows a moqui ball that is still attached to the sandstone wall. I can see that rain water eroded some of the sand around it. I wonder how long it will take for this particular ball to come out from the wall as the erosion continues. Isn’t it interesting?

いやいや、こんなことありえないよね？岩壁に見つけたモキマーブルのアパート？ At one point, we found a moqui ball apartment. I am sure this was not formed naturally.

Hike 21: イエローノール Yellow Knolls Loop

レッドクリフデザート保護区の中のイエローノール周辺をぐるりと回ってくる、8 km のハイキングでした。 The Yellow Knolls Loop is a 5 mile hike in the Red Cliffs Desert Preserve.

前半はトレイルを外れて、岩場を昇り降りしました。そこを超えると亀の甲羅模様が現れます。 Our hike was off trail and up on rocky hills, but the turtle shell patterned hills appeared once we went beyond the hill.

自然の作り出す模様は面白いですね。 Nature’s creations always fascinate me.

早起きは苦手ですが、早朝のハイキングはやっぱり気持ちがいい！ I am not good at getting up early, but early morning hikes always make me feel so good.

MV Rock

思い立って、MV Rock に接近して見た。 – Suddenly, the idea of going closer to MV Rock came to us. So we did.

わー、こんな砂地なんだ。歩きにくい。ナバホ砂岩層の砂のたまり場みたい。 – The area around it is covered with sand so it becomes difficult to walk. I wonder if it’s a place where sands of the Navajo Sandstone layer were carried by wind and piled up.

足跡がたくさんあるけど、みんなここに住む動物たちのものだね。- There were many footprints on the sands from all the animals’ living around here.

Gila （ヒーラと発音する）トレイルまで来ると、シンとして風の音だけが聞こえる。 – It’s so quiet. I could hear only the sound of wind when we got to Gila trail.

ヒーラモンスターは（日本語でアメリカ毒トカゲと呼ばれる）まさにこの地に住んでいる巨大なトカゲです。「突然でて来たらどうしようか？」とバンちゃんに聞いて見ました。 – Gila Monster is a gigantic lizard which lives around this area. I asked Banchan, “What should we do if a Gila monster suddenly appears now?”

「まず写真を撮って・・」ここまでは同じでしたが、その後は逃げる私とは反対に、「もっと近づいて写真を撮る」が彼の答えでした。- “Take pictures first…” Yes, I will do same, but he said opposite answer to mine, “go closer to it and take more pictures.” I will definately run away from it.

MV Rock と回りのトレイルマップです。今回は緑色でハイライトされたパラダイスリムを登って見ました。前回はオレンジ色のタートルウォール。急な道だけど、距離が短くなり、それだけ早くたどり着く事ができるんです。- See the map of MV Rock and trails below. We took the orange highlighted trail once before, but we took the green highlighted trail this time. It’s steeper, but the distance is so much shorter so we could get there in less time.

このルートなら3-4時間あれば往復できる事がわかりました。MV Rock が心の中でも近くなったよ。- With this route, we could get there and back in 3 hours. MV Rock becomes closer to my soul, as well.

Toe Trail

雲が流れている日に Toe というトレイルを歩いた。 – We hiked the Toe trail in a day that clouds were moving in the sky.

Ivinsという隣町からTuacahnという野外劇場への道に抜ける Toe という短いトレイル。バンちゃんの背中の手術後の経過を待ちながら少しづつ体力作りができたらいいと願う。 – The trail is a short trail that starts from Ivins and leads to the road to get to the Tuacahn Theatre. After Banchan’s back surgery, we are patiently waiting for the recovery. The recovery is slow but his physical strength is better day by day.

このトレイルで陸ガメがよく見られるというウワサを聞いて、今回で2回目。でも、シンとしてカメどころか鳥もあまり見かけなかった。冬眠に入る前に見たかったけど、もう時間切れでしょうか。 – It’s been said that tortoises have seen on this trail. So it was the second attempt for us, but unfortuanatly we had no luck seeing any tortoises. Actually there weren’t very many animals at all. It was simply very quiet. I am afraid we will run out of time before the tortoises go down deep in the ground for hybernation this year.

雲の隙間から流れ出る太陽の光、それを受けた稜線は輝き、空高く導かれていた。 – Beams of sunshine breaking through the clouds shined down on the ridge. It was as if those beams of sunshine were coaxing the ridge higher and higher into the sky.

久しぶりのランドスケープ写真と散歩、のどかに過ぎました。It was simply peaceful. We casually walked and stopped from time to time to take landscape pictures. The time passed by very quietly.

見つけた！ – Found it!

見つけたものが二つあります。 – We have found two things.

一つは “MV Rock”。 – One of them is “MV Rock”.

毎日朝起きて最初に眺める景色の中心にある岩。いつも「あの岩の場所を探したいね。」と話していました。念願叶い、先日、ついに近くまで行って来ました。下の地図上、緑が歩いた山道。赤く囲んだ所がこの岩です。 – The rock is always the center of the view I see first thing in the morning. We always said, “Let’s find where the rock is.” A chance came to us the other day to go up there close to the rock. On the map below, the green line is the trail we walked and the red circle is the rock.

ここは Red Cliffs Desert Reserve の一角です。ビジターセンターに行ってこの岩の名前を聞いたら、名前がないとのこと。そこで “MV Rock” と名付けました。(MV は Majestic View の略）私たちの岩、ついに見つけた！ – It’s a part of Red Cliffs Desert Reserve. We went to the visitors center and asked them what the name of the rock was. To our surprise, they said it has no name. So, we named it as “MV Rock” where MV stans for Majestic View. Yes, we finally found our rock!

このベンチから、二番目の発見がありました。我が家が見えたんです！家から VM Rock が見えるということは、この丘の上から見えて当然なんですが、感激です。 – From this bench, we found the second discovery. We found our house! Of course, we can see our house from there as we see the rock from our house. I am quite moved by it.
