秋始動 Autumn begins

観葉植物のフィーカスが一気に葉を落としていました。　My Ficus houseplant suddenly shed all its leaves.

わー、もう秋なんだと思い、パチリと写真を撮って気がつきました。庭のデザートスプーンの花（？）がまだ空に向かって生き続けていました。　Wow, I thought to myself, “It’s already autumn,” and snapped a photo. That’s when I noticed the dessert spoon flowers (?) in the garden were still clinging to life, reaching skyward.

過去6年間、一度も見たことのなかった花のような、実のような茎が生えてきたのは春ですから、もう半年ぐらい経過しています。雨にも風にも負けずここまで来たので、一体いつまで生き続けるのか見守ってあげましょう。　It’s been about half a year since spring, when stems sprouted like flowers or fruit I’d never seen before in the past six years. Having made it this far despite rain and wind, let’s keep watch over it and see just how long it will keep living.

モンスーンシーズンの豪雨の夜などは、雷もゴロゴロ鳴り続け、カエル君も窓ガラスに必死にしがみついていました。　On nights of torrential rain during the monsoon season, thunder rumbled on and on, and the little frog clung desperately to the windowpane.

でも、それもようやく過ぎ去って、秋の空が広がるようになりました。そこで、久しぶりに近くの丘へ。遠くにこの町の母なる山脈、パインバレー山脈が見え、手前には家からいつも眺めている、MVロックが見えています。　But that too has finally passed, and the autumn sky stretches out before me. So, for the first time in a while, I headed to the nearby hill. In the distance, the Pine Valley Mountains, Mother Mountain Range of this town, come into view, and closer by, MV Rock, which I always see from home, is visible.

私たちの家が見下ろせる丘。 This is the hill overlooking our house.

下を見下ろすと感慨深いです。6年前とはずいぶん変わってしまいました。家がぎっしり立ち並んでいます。　Looking down below stirs deep emotion. It’s changed so much since six years ago. Houses stand packed tightly together.

そして、こちら、赤い線で囲まれたところは、巨大リゾートです。まだ完成していませんが、明日からPGAゴルフツアーが開始する予定です。　And here, the area outlined in red is a massive resort. It’s not finished yet, but the PGA golf tour is scheduled to start tomorrow at this resort.

静かな場所を選んで引っ越してきたつもりでしたが、予定通りにはいかないものですね。道路やレストランなどの混雑が予想されています。　We thought we’d chosen a quiet place to move to, but things don’t always go as planned. Traffic congestion on roads and crowds at restaurants are expected.

ま、これも私たちの街の姿です。これからも変化していきそうですが、愛を込めて見守っていきます。　Well, this too is a part of our town. It will likely keep changing, but we’ll watch over it with love.

ジャバの掃除 Clean-up Of Jabba

ジャバは我が家の玄関横にある水が流れる置物です。　Jabba is an ornament next to the front door of our house with running water.

スターウォーズのジャバザハットみたいなので、そう、命名しました。 It looks like Jabba the Hutt from Star Wars, so, yes, I named it that.

しばらく前から藍藻のようなものに覆われて、Javaの横を通るたびに匂いがしていました。薬を入れていますが、コントロールがうまくできていなかったようです。　For some time now it had been covered in what looks like cyanobacteria, and every time I walk by Jabba I could smell it. Although we add chemicals to water, it did not seem to be well controlled.

べロキラプトルのボブがホコリと蜘蛛の巣まみれながら、「なんとかしてくれー！」と懇願していました。そこで私が掃除をすることにしました。　Bob the velociraptor, covered in dust and cobwebs, pleaded, “Do something!” So I decided to clean him up.

まずは回りに生えているアイビーをほとんど取り除きました。すると陸亀のティムがようやく見えるようになりました。 First, I removed most of the ivy growing around it. This also allowed us to finally see Tim, the tortoise.

それから3時間、ブラシで手が届くところはすべて擦りました。 For the next three hours, I scrubbed everywhere I could reach with a brush.

その甲斐あって、ティムがありがとうと言っていました。 And it was worth it. Tim said, “thank you.”

ボブも喜んでいます。 Bob is also pleased.

ついでに子供の陸亀のタバサも嬉しそうです。 In addition, the child tortoise Tabitha looks happy, too.

緑色だった水の色も落ち着いて、透明になりました。　The color of the water, which was green, has calmed down and become clear.

すると、さっそくしばらく見なかったヒキガエルのミスタートッドが涼みに来てくれました。　Then, immediately, Mr. Toad whom I had not seen for some time, came to cool off.

よかった。これで例年のように来客が増えることでしょう。　Good. Now we will have more visitors as in previous years.

その後、バンちゃん帰宅後、「ジャバの中心の窪みの中に何かが居るよ」と言われました。水が綺麗になったので、中の様子がわかります。でも、私にはまだ見えません。　Later, after Ban-chan came home, he said, “there is something in the hollow in the center of Jabba.” Now that the water is clean, I can see what is inside. But I still can’t find the mysterious something in there.

過去6年間、さまざまな生き物の来訪があったので、何かがいても不思議ではありません。今後の展開を見守ることにします。 Over the past six years, various creatures have also visited Java, so it would not be surprising if something is there. We will be watching for further developments.

こんなに綺麗にしても、ジャバの見かけはやはりジャバザハットです。でも、家の中心に鎮座して、今日も私たちを見守ってくれています。　Even with all this cleanliness, the water feature still looks like Jabba the Hutt to me. But it sits in the center of our house and watches over us everyday.

ユタ州の州花 Utah’s State Flower

セゴユリです。　Sego lily.

ザイオン国立公園の西側、パインバレーピークのトレイル沿いに咲いていました。　It was blooming along the Pine Valley Peak trail on the west side of Zion National Park.

この花がなぜ州の花に指定されているかというと、昔、飢饉で食糧難になった時に、この花を食べて命を繋いだと言う話が残されているからです。いろいろなレシピがあるようです。　The reason why this flower is designated as the state flower is because there is a story that in the past, when there was a shortage of food, people ate this flower to save their lives. Even today, there are various recipes for this flower.

ところで、このハイキングですが、気温が40度近くまで上がるので、6時半ごろから歩き始めました。　This hike, by the way, started around 6:30 a.m. because the temperature rises to nearly 105F degrees.

久しぶりのザイオンは気持ちが良かったです。雪もすっかり溶けて、水溜りもあまり残っていませんでしたが、いくつか見つけた所ではカエルが気持ちよさそう泳いでいました。　I hadn’t been to Zion in a long time and it felt good. The snow had melted and there were not many puddles left, but there were frogs swimming happily in some of the places we found.

水は大切ですね。　Water is important.

嵐の後 After The Storms

この1ヶ月、忙しくしていました。気がつけばもう9月。 I have been busy this past month. Before I knew it, it was already September.

私が目標にしていた9月2日を翌日に迎え、苦しんでいました。なぜなら9月2日から自分の製品を近くの野外マーケットで売り出すと決めていたにもかかわらず、雷を伴う激しい嵐と豪雨が来ていたからです。窓にはカエルがペタリと張り付いていました。I was suffering with September 2 coming the next day, because I had set my target day to begin selling stuff at the local Saturday market on September 2. But then severe thunderstorms and torrential rains were coming. A frog was flopping on the window.

翌朝は7時前に家を出て、会場に行く予定でした。初めての小さなお店です。その為にこの１ヶ月間、様々な準備をしてきたんですよねー。でも、雨のため、断念しました。On the morning of September 2, I planned to leave home before 7 am to go to the market. It was the first time I was going to open my booth there. I worked very hard over the past month to get ready. But I had to give up because of the rain.

ま、こんなこともあるものです。さっさと気を取り直して次の土曜日に目標を絞ります。　Well, such things happen. I’ll quickly get back on track and focus on my goals for next Saturday.

こちらが私の商品です。リビングにお店を広げてみました。 Here are my products. I spread out my store in our living room.

メタルプリントを5枚用意しました。その他は4枚セットのコースターです。誰かにそのままプレゼントできるようにラッピングもしてあります。　I made five metal prints. The others are various sets of 4 coasters each.

私の過去15年間ほどの野生動物の写真が中心です。嬉しいことに、お店を出す前に、すでに1セット売れました。ボブキャットのコースターです。 They are mostly wildlife photos from my past 15 years or so. Encouragingly, I already sold one set before I opened the store. That was a set of Bobcat coasters.

年内に出資額を取り戻すのが目標です。目標は高い方がいいのだ。 My goal is to regain the initial investment by the end of the year. The higher the goal, the better.

一年前からバンちゃんがすでにアートショーをスタートさせていたので、私もきっとできると思えるようになりました。彼の勇気に感謝です。 Since Ban-chan had already started attending art festivals a year ago, it made me feel that I could do it too. I am grateful for his courage.

大雨のおかげで、昨夜、今まで見たことのない訪問客がありました。　Thanks to the heavy rain, we had a visit last night from a brand new type of animal.

16cm もある大きなウシガエルです。　This is a large American bullfrog, measuring 6.5 inches in length.

今朝、家の回りを探してみましたが、見つかりませんでした。久しぶりにいい天気の今日、サッサとどこかの池に帰って行ったのでしょう。 We looked around the house this morning, but could not find it. It was the first nice day in a long time, and it must have gone back to a pond somewhere in a hurry.

嵐のおかげで、また雨漏りがありました。ご近所では木が倒れたり、家の中まで浸水したりとたくさんの被害が報告されています。でも、嵐の後、光を浴びて輝く草木を見ると勇気が湧いてきます。 Thanks to the storm, we had another leak. Oh dear! Many of our neighbors have reported lots of damages, with trees falling over and flooding into their houses. But after the storm, seeing the grass and trees shining in the light gives me courage.

きっと、大丈夫。次の土曜日、きっとうまくいくよ！ I’ll be fine. Next Saturday, it will be fine!

サソリとカエル The Scorpion and the Frog

多分、1ヶ月前にサソリのスコットがいなくなりました。これはいなくなる前に蜘蛛を食べているところです。 Probably about a month ago, Scott the scorpion disappeared. The picture below is him eating a spider before he went.

こちらはカエルのフランクです。彼は地上レベルの小さな池で暮らしていました。 This is Frank the frog. He lived in a small pond at ground level.

それが、少し前ごろから、地面レベルの池から 1m ぐらい上で日向ぼっこしているフランクを発見しました。 But then, a little before Scott disappeared, we found Frank at a terrace about three feet above the ground. He looked like he was enjoying the warm sun light.

その後、彼は大胆にもスコットが住んでいる頂上の大池までジャンプして、大海を満喫している様でした。手前にスッコット、その向こうの水の中にフランクがいます。 Soon after that, Frank jumped boldly to the top level, and was enjoying the larger pool even more.

フランクがスコットに食べられちゃうんじゃないかと心配していましたが、どうやらスコットは冬眠のため、噴水から降りて行った様です。残ったフランクは俄然大きな池を行ったり来たり。スコットが暮らしていた所で夜を過ごし、ついに主となりました。 I was worrying about Frank being eaten by Scott, but luckly the time came for Scott to go find a place to hibernate for the winter. So then, the water feature became Frank’s playground entirely on his own. He spent time between rocks where Scott used to live at night.

その後、私たちは忙しくてフランクの観察ができないでいました。でも、ある日、フランクが私たちを観察しているような感じで家の中をうかがっていました。 Then, we forgot about him because we became busy. But one day, I noticed that Frank was sitting close to the edge of the water feature and looking inside the house.

そこで、何ですか？と尋ねると、 So, I asked him, “what’s up?”

どうやら、記念撮影をして欲しそう。 He didn’t say a word but I understood that he wanted me to take portrait pictures.

恐竜のデイノニクスと一緒にいるところや、おすまし顔を撮ってあげました。 I took several pictures like the one being with Deinonychus, and doing a big boy pose.

その後、私たちの留守中にフランクは噴水を降りてどこかに行ってしまいました。きっと、また来てね！ We don’t know when he left the water feature, but I haven’t seen him since the last portrait. Come again next year!
