ラップトップの故障でしばらくお休みしていたら、春はどんどん過ぎていってしまいました。ここ、セイントジョージはもう夏のように暑い日が時々訪れますが、まだ春の名残も残してます。While I was taking time off from writing posts for a while because my laptop broke down, Spring has almost gone away. It is nearly summer already, but I can still find some signs of Spring remaining here and there.
6月初め、裏庭の手入れをしていたら、急にウズラお母さんが低木の中から大慌てで飛び出してきました。私の勘が当たっていれば、嬉しい贈り物。早速 Ring カメラを設置してみました。以下、6月3日の午後1時の映像です。It was the beginning of June. When I was gardening in backyard, a quail came out from a bush suddenly as if it was startled. I immediately took it as a lovely present. So we set up a Ring security camera there. The video below is from around 1:00 pm on June 3rd.
思いがけない春の贈り物に、久しぶりに興奮しました。日本語名はズアカカンムリウズラといいます。ヒナを数えたら11匹もいました。I was so excited with the unexpected gift from Spring. I counted the Gambel’s quail chicks. There were 11 of them total.
裏庭の塀のすぐ外にスーッと飛来した後、隣家の屋根に舞い降りました。A Red-tailed Hawk swooped down right outside our backyard wall, then flew up again to perch on the roof of the neighbor’s house.
スクリーンドア越し、飛び立つ前の一瞬に撮れた貴重な一枚。This is a precious shot that I took through a screen door a few seconds before the hawk flew away.
バンちゃん曰く「ウサギのキーっていう呻き声と鷹のピューっていう鳴き声とガサガサで結構な騒動だったみたい。」私がカメラを取りに行っている間、塀越しに聞こえたウサギとアカオノスリの格闘劇を話してくれました。Banchan, who was outside while I ran to get my camera said, “It was quite noisy with squeals from the rabbit and shrieks by the hawk even though it was outside the fence.” What a drama created by the lucky Red-tailed Hawk and the poor rabbit.
今日のアカオノスリのご褒美。でも、私たちにとっても意外なご褒美でした。It was today’s treat. For the hawk that is, but of course, for us as well.
ウパトキ国定公園からの帰り道、コロラド川に架かるナバホ橋に立ち寄りました。ここにはすでに3度目の訪問です。前回も会えたから、今回もきっと会えると思っていました。We stopped by at the Navajo Bridge on the way back home from Wupatki National Monument. We’ve visited here three times already. During the last two times we were able to see them, so I was quite sure that we could see them again.
去年のコンドルとは別のコンドルですが、やっぱりいました。すでに「X6」と名前のタグと追跡ラジオアンテナがついています。早速ペルグリン財団のデータベースを調べてみました。なるほど、2018年の8月に生まれたメスです。Sure enough, we did. There was a new juvenile with a name tag, “X6”, and radio antenna. So I checked the Peregrine Fund website. Yes, I could find “X6” in the list, a female condor, born in August 2018.
まだ頭の色が赤くなっていないので、若鳥です。独り立ちできる大人になるまでに5年ぐらいかかるという事なので、あと1年ぐらい待つ必要がありそうですね。It is easy to say that the bird is a juvenile because the head color hasn’t turned red yet. It may take another year or so to be fully grown up.
ところで、一昨年ザイオン国立公園で生まれたコンドルもリストに入っています。コンドルリカバリープログラムが数え始めて1000番目に産まれたから1K という名前がつきました。私たちも幾度となく観察に行ったコンドルです。その時はまだ性別がわからなかったんですが、ようやくオスだという事がわかったようです。まだザイオンにいるのでしょうか。By the way, “1K” is also in the list. He was born in Zion National Park two years ago. He was named as “1K” because he was the 1,000th condor born since the Condor Recovery Program started. We went there several times last year as well. At the time, the sex was not known. Apparently the program has since identified it as a male condor.
崖の上にはもう一羽止っていました。まだタグはついていません。ということは、去年産まれたばかりなのかもしれません。There was another condor on the cliff. It doesn’t have a tag yet. It means that it was probably born not so long ago.
まだ子供です。もう飛べるのかもわからないんですが、顔をよく観察すると、まつ毛が見えた！フカフカの襟巻きの中から見える顔は、ちょっと可愛いと思わせてくれました。It’s still a child. I don’t know if it has fledged or not. By observing its face carefully, I found eyelashes! Wow!!! I normally don’t think condors are cute, but the face with the fluffy neck warmer and eyelashes made me think it’s cute.
白頭ワシが今年ももう帰ってるって聞いたから、１８号線を北上して行った。そしたら道路脇にいた。
We’ve heard that Bald Eagles are back here already. So we went on Hwy 18 up north. And there he was on the side of the road.
わー、やっぱり大きな鳥は存在感があって、見ているだけで興奮しちゃいますね。
Large birds like Bald Eagles have a strong presence and make me excited.
近づこうとするとすぐに飛び立っていってしまうので、なかなか近くで見られなけど、白い頭は遠くからでも見つけやすい。They fly away if we try to go closer than their comfortable distance. So we can not see them from close distance, but it’s easy to find them because of their white heads.
場所争いかな？やっぱりカラスが白頭ワシを追い出そうとしてる。どの動物の世界もみんな大変ね。Could it be a territorial fight? Crows always attack other birds. Well, I guess it’s all the same for birds, other animals, and even for humans, too. We all work hard to survive everyday.
ともあれ、今年もまた出会えてよかった。In any case, I am glad to see you again this year!

夕暮れ、丘に登ったら、マウンテンバイクの若者が半袖、ショートパンツで楽しんでいました。
I went up a hill near sunset. A young man with short pants and shirts was enjoying mountain bike ride.
遠くの山には微かに雪が積もっているっていうのに、若者は元気だな〜！
Wow, we have snow already on the mountains in the background. It’s nice to see young energy.

We went down to a wash from the Johnson Canyon Trail, and went into Cottonwood trees.

日が暮れて暗がりの中、バンちゃんが裏庭で何かを撮っていた。私も外に出てみると、アメリカワシミミズクが隣の家の屋根に止まっていた。おかえり、ミスターゴー！
Banchan was taking pictures in the backyard in the dark after sunset. So I went out and found a Great horned owl sitting on the neighbor’s roof. “Welcome back, Mr. Gho!”
そしておご馳走もゲットできたんだね。

私たちがいると安心しておご馳走を食べられない様子だったので、退散しました。It seems that he couldn’t eat his dinner while we watched, so we left.

レンズを取り替える間も無く、とりあえずワイドレンズで撮った。I didn’t have time to change the lens, so I took shot’s with a wide angle lens through the window.
ウェブ検索の結果、未成年のクーパーハイタカだとわかりました。After a web search, I found that it was a juvenile Cooper’s Hawk.
すでに一週間以上前の早朝のこと。

It happened one early morning more than a week ago.
The security camera by the front door captured a fantastic action.
A Great Horned Owl landed on a beam in the courtyard.
飛び起きてこっそり観察できる私の部屋の小さな窓からのぞいてみた。背の低い私にはカメラを持ち上げるだけで精一杯。
We jumped out from bed and peaked out through a tiny window in my room. The window is positioned so high that I had to raise my camera over my head without looking.
そうこうしていうるうちに、ゲストハウスの屋根の上に飛び移った。私たちも廊下に移動してパチリ。
While I was struggling to see the owl, he jumped on to the guest house roof. So we moved also. Now we could see him from the hallway window. From this window, we took a few decent shots like below.
「太陽はまだ昇りかけたばかり。でも、もう巣に帰る時間ですよね。また、ぜひ来てくださいね！美味しそうなウサギがたくさんいますから。」
“The sun has just risen. I assume it is your bedtime and you must return to your nest. Please visit us again! We have many delicious looking rabbits around here.”
またの来訪を祈り、ミスターゴーと名付けました。
I named him “Mr. GHO” (pronounced “ɡō”) hoping to see him again.
以下、カメラが捕えたビデオです。よかったらご覧ください。4分近くいましたが、長いのでカットしました。面白いのは、窓から見える私たちの行動です。二人ともまだパジャマ姿で、バンちゃんは何もなかったように歩いているのに、私は慌てて走っている姿が写ってます。
The security camera’s video is attached below. He stayed there about 4 minutes, so I trimmed it to make it shorter. The funny thing is that you can see our activity through the window on the left. We were both in pajamas. Banchan was walking naturally, while I was running in a rush.
ハイイロチョウヒ、今回初めて目撃することができました。これはメスのハイイロチョウヒです。ネックレスが素敵ですね。- It was my first time witnessing this bird, the Northern Harrier. The photo below is of a female. The design around the neck looks pretty, like wearing a neckless.
ベアレイク国立野生動物保護区、葦が茂る草原の上を低空飛行していました。- It was flying low over the wetlands of Bear Lake National Wildlife Refuge.
オスはもっと白灰色らしいんですが、見かけませんでした。- The male is much more gray and white, but we didn’t see it that day.
おっと、夕食の獲物を見つけたんでしょうか。巣穴の様子伺いをしているようです。- Oh, did she find something for her dinner? It was staring at a ground dweller’s hole for a few seconds.
でも次の瞬間には、私と目を合わせて飛んで行ってしまいました。- But it flew away right after it made eye contact with me.
毎日を一生懸命生きている姿にまた感動し、宿に帰りました。自然はいつも私を謙虚にしてくれる。- I was quite moved again by their way of life, which is to simply live their best everyday. Nature always reminds me to be humble.
こんな風景を目撃した時、私の世界はトキと共に時間を超えていると思いました。忘れられない心象風景のようです。- I was shocked to see such a sight. I thought I traveled back in time with an Ibis. The scene was like an image deep in my mind, a forgotten memory.
羽の色が何色もあるのに落ち着く色ですね。色ありでもシルエットでも美しい。どっちの方が私好みかな。そう、白黒写真にしたら、日本画になりそうです。- The Ibis feather’s contain so many colors, yet are so soft and calm. It’s beautiful in both color or as a silhouette. Let me think which one I like more. Yes, that’s it. It could be a Japanese painting if I make it a monochrome picture.
ベアレイク野生動物保護区でなくてもトキには出会えますが、じっくりと向き合ったのは今回初めてのような気がします。- We don’t need to come to Bear Lake National Wildlife Refuge to see Ibis, but it happened to be the first time for me to face it like this.
