イルリサット旅行記はまだ続きますが、今日はチョイ休憩です。　The Ilulissat travelogue will continue, but today I am taking a short break.

昨晩・今朝のペルセウス流星をご覧になった方はいらっしゃいますでしょうか。 Did anyone see the Perseid meteor shower last night or this morning?

私たちは思い立って標高10,000フィート以上 (3,000m 以上）にあるブライアンヘドというスキーリゾートへ行きました。 We went to a ski resort called Brian Head, at an altitude of over 10,000 feet, on a whim.

家を出る前、激しい雨霰が降り、流星を見られる確率は限りなく低くなっていました。 Before we left home, there was a heavy hailstorm and the probability of seeing meteors was infinitesimally low.

それでもホテルは予約してあったので、とりあえず行く事にしました。 Still, we had reserved a hotel room, so we decided to go anyway.

至る所で稲光が激しく光っていました。カメラは持っていませんでしたが、携帯で撮った稲光の瞬間です。 There were intense flashes of lightning everywhere in the distance. I didn’t have my camera with me, but here is one of the lightning moments I captured with my cell phone.

夜11時過ぎ、雲が晴れ、星座が見えていました。白鳥座はカシオペアより上に、そして、ペルセウス座はカシオペア座を追いかけるように下に見えていました。雲が流れていて、さすがに天の川は綺麗に見えていませんでした。 After 11 pm, the clouds had cleared and the constellations were visible. Cygnus was visible above Cassiopeia, and Perseus was below, chasing Cassiopeia. The clouds were drifting, and as expected, the Milky Way was not beautifully visible.

下の写真は稲妻が光ったタイミングで携帯で撮った写真です。赤い線でカシオペア座とペルセウス座をなぞってみました。 The photo below is one I took with my cell phone just as the lightning flashed. I traced Cassiopeia and Perseus with red lines.

「白鳥座と夏の大三角形はどこかな？」などと探していたら、突然、太く大きく弧を描きながら、2-3秒もかけて流星が右から左へ流れていきました。 “Where is Cygnus and the Summer Triangle…?” I was looking for it. Then suddenly, a meteor streaked from right to left in a long, large arc, lasting 2-3 seconds.

なんとラッキーな！！！ How lucky!

その後、小さな流星が一回見えました。バンちゃんはさらに2-3回見たそうですが、私はもう大満足で、12時半ごろホテルに引き上げました。 After that, I saw one small meteor. Banchan said he saw it 2-3 more times, but I was already very satisfied, and we headed back to the hotel around 12:30 pm.

過去に何回もその瞬間を見そびれていました。つまり、今回が私の生涯で初めての流星の目撃経験となりました。ペルセウス、ありがとう！ I had missed the moment many times in the past. In other words, this was my first meteor sighting experience in my lifetime. Thank you, Perseus!

今日、明日も、まだ流星が見られるそうです。空気の良いところで夜中過ぎ、北東の空を見上げてみてください。　Meteors will still be visible today and tomorrow. Look up at the northeastern sky after midnight where the air is good.

イルリサット旅行記、4回目。 Ilulissat travelogue, 4th.

ツンドラ地帯は、地下に永久凍土が広がる草木が生えない地帯を指します。（高山ツンドラは少し違うようですね。） Tundra is the area where there is no grass or trees with permafrost beneath. (Alpine tundra is a little different.)

夏には地表の氷が溶けてコケや地衣類が生えてきます。 In summer, the ice on the ground surface melts and mosses and lichens grow.

氷河にもフィヨルドにも興味がありましたが、実は絶対に時間を見つけてツンドラの荒野を歩いてみたいと思っていました。I was interested in both the glaciers and the fjords, but in fact I definitely wanted to find time to walk the tundra wilderness.

なぜなら、友人に勧めらて『極限大地』という地質学者が書いた本を読んだからです。初めは英語版を読んでいましたが、あまりにも難解な専門用語が出てきたので、日本語訳で読み終えていました。 This is because a friend recommended a book written by a geologist called “A Wilder Time“. At first, I read the English version of the book, but I found the terminology too difficult to understand, so I finished reading the Japanese translation version.

バンちゃんは興味がないので、私一人でゆっくりと歩きました。 Banchan was not interested, so I walked slowly on my own.

ここで確かめてみたいことがいくつかありました。 There were a few things I wanted to check here.

一つめ：極限大地の本の中で作者は次のように記述しています。　First: In the book ”A Wilder Time”, the author describes;

一歩踏みしめるたび、不法侵入しているような気分になる。何千年ものあいだ誰にも邪魔されなかった大地に乱暴に襲いかかり、土足で汚しているように思えた。（略）ブーツが地面を離れるとディテールは再び隠れ、コケは元の姿に戻るのだった。

With each step I took, I felt like I was trespassing. It seemed as if I was violently attacking the earth, which had been undisturbed for thousands of years, and contaminating it with my feet of dirt. (Omitted.) As soon as my boots left the ground, the details would hide again and the moss would return to its original form. (Note: The English quote is not the real quote from the book. It’s my translation from the Japanese edition.)

作者はその発見に「彼の存在は午後に吹くそよ風と同様、撮るに足らない存在」だと思い至ります。　The author comes to the realization that “his existence is as insignificant as the breeze in the afternoon.”

道がない場所だったので、私も彼と同じようにフカフカした厚い絨毯のようなコケの上を歩いていました。振り返ってみると、本当に、私の足跡など、どこにもない！彼の経験は本当だった事に感動しました。　There was no path, so I was walking on the same thick, fluffy carpet of moss as he was. When I looked back, there really were no footprints of mine, or any other footprints, anywhere! I was impressed that his experience was real.

もう一つは、見渡す限り誰もいないツンドラ荒野で、大声を上げて叫んでみたかった。 The other thing I wanted to do was to scream out loud in the tundra wilderness, where there was no one as far as the eye could see.

作者は、そんな事をしても荒野に吸い込まれてしまうだけだと記述します。「大昔の音のない世界と同じように無言で語りかけてくる。すべてをありのまま受け入れるようにと誘いかけてくる。」　The author describes how such a thing would only suck you into the wilderness. He says, “Like the soundless world of long ago, it speaks to us silently. It invites us to accept everything as it is.”

確かに、何の返信もなく、風の音だけが聞こえていました。私の近くでユキホオジロが行ったり来たりしていただけでした。　Indeed, there was no reply, only the sound of the wind. All I heard was a Snow Bunting coming and going near me.

帰り道、作者が発見したように片麻岩を探しました。もちろん、深い知識がないので岩石を見てどんな石か区別ができるわけではありません。そこで、家のキッチンのカウンタートップと似たような模様なら、少なくとも花崗岩らしくなるので、そんな小さいかけらを拾ってホテルに戻りました。　On the way home, I looked for gneiss as the author discovered. Of course, not having in-depth knowledge, I could not distinguish what kind of stone it was by looking at the rock. So I picked up small pieces of gneiss that looked like granite, at least it had a similar pattern to the kitchen counter top at home.

補註：片麻岩は地下深くまで潜り込んで再結晶化した岩石です。二つの大陸がぶつかり、縫合された場所ではよく発見される岩石だそうです。後、作者達はそれを証明する証拠をさらに発見していきます。そして、まさにここは、18億年前、二つの大陸が衝突して縫合した場所 なんですね。すごい！ Sidenote: Gneiss is a rock that has recrystallized after burrowing deep underground. It is a rock often found in places where two continents collide and are sutured together. Later, the author and fellow geologists discovered more evidence to prove it. And this was exactly where the two continents collided and stitched together 1.8 billion years ago. Amazing!

イルリサット旅行記、3回目。Ilulissat travelogue, 3rd.

静まり返っていた夜中過ぎ、私たちはホテルに辿り着きました。The area was already quiet. We arrived at the hotel after midnight.

長い旅路の疲れもチェックインカウンターの後ろの豪華な景色が私たちを和ませてくれました。 The gorgeous view behind the hotel check-in counter soothed us from our long journey.

「ここからの眺めは最高ね！」 “The view from here is amazing!”

「ええ、でもちょうど昨日 白夜が終わって、少し暗くなりかけているのが不思議。これから少しずつ夜がやって来るのよ。」と、チェックインカウンターのお姉さんが教えてくれました。 “Yes, but it’s strange that the midnight sun ended just yesterday so it’s getting a little darker. The night is slowly coming on.” The lady at the check-in counter told us.

確か、その日の日の入りが午前1時59分、日の出は午前3時2分でした。1時間しか日が沈まない。日が沈んだとはいえ、暗くなるには程遠く、部屋のカーテンをぴっちり閉めて寝ました。 As I recall, sunset that day was at 1:59 a.m. and sunrise was at 3:02 a.m. The sun only set for an hour. Although the sun had set, it was far from dark, and we went to bed with the curtains of my room tightly closed.

着いた日も、翌日（正確には同じ日）も雨。 It rained the day we arrived and the next day (actually same day after we woke up later).

それでも私たちは1日中様々な事をして過ごしました。夕食後、部屋に帰ってくつろぎながら、外の景色にソワソワします。部屋の外は海。眼前に広がる景色の美しさを諦めて寝るには勿体無い。 Yet we spent the whole day doing all sorts of things. After dinner, we went back to our room to relax and soak in the view outside. Outside the room is the ocean. It would be a shame to give up on the beauty of the view before us and go to bed.

11:14pm

そこで同じような景色をパチパチ撮っていてある事にハッと気がつきました。もう白夜ではないけれど、、、　There I admired the light changing over time and took all the pictures I could. And then I suddenly noticed something. Although it is not a midnight sun anymore…

太陽が左から右へ、地平線に沿って動いていた！

The sun was moving along the horizon from left to right!

この日の日の入りは 1:30am でした。The sunset was at 1:30am.

午前1時47分、あたりはビーナスベルトの幻想的な色に包まれてきました。この時点でこの日の午後のアクティビティに備えて寝ることにしました。 At 1:47 a.m., the area was becoming enveloped in the fantastic colors of the belt of Venus. At this point, I decided to go to bed in preparation for the activities in the afternoon for the next day.

町の紹介 Town Introduction

イルリサット旅行記、イントロとして、あくまでも私の印象でしかありませんが町の紹介を少しします。 As an introduction to the Ilulissat travelogue, I would like to introduce a little about the town, although it is only based on my impression.

自宅を出発してから2.5日後にイルリサットのホテルに辿り着きました。もしも直行便の飛行機があるのなら、多分10時間ぐらいで着くのではないかな。とりわけアイスランドからイルリサットまでの飛行機がキャンセルとなり、ホテルで足止めとなったこともあって、遠い南半球の国に行くような時間のかかる移動となりました。 We arrived at our hotel in Ilulissat 2.5 days after leaving home. If there was a direct flight, it would probably take only 10 hours to get there. Among other things, the flight from Iceland to Ilulissat was cancelled and we were stranded in a lobby at a hotel, which made the trip as time-consuming as if we were going to a distant southern hemisphere country.

人口4000人ちょっとの小さな町です。町一周も1日あれば徒歩でできてしまいます。また、シャトルバスやタクシーもあるので、大きな荷物を持ちながらの移動も問題にはなりません。　It is a small town with a population of a little over 4,000. A around the town tour can be done on foot in a day. There are also shuttle buses and cabs, so getting around with large luggage is not a problem.

グリーンランドはデンマークの統治下で、デンマークから夏の間の仕事にきている人たちも多そうです。通貨もデンマークのクローネですが、キャッシュは全く必要ありません。全てクレジットカードで決済できます。唯一の例外は私たちの船のクルー達と写真家へのチップでした。それもアメリカドルで済ませました。（基本、チップは必要ありません。）　Greenland is under Danish rule and many people seem to come from Denmark for summer work. The currency is also the Danish krone, but cash is not required at all. Everything can be done by credit card. The only exception was tipping our ship’s crew and photographer guide. We used American dollars for that as well. (Basically, you don’t need to tip).

特記する事は、犬ぞりの犬の数は人口よりも多く、4500匹という事です。私たちの滞在中はまだ夏なので、犬たちは何もする事がなく毎日を過ごします。 It is worth mentioning that there are 4,500 sled dogs, which is more than the population. Since it is summer during our stay, the dogs spend their days with nothing to do.

でも、この短い夏こそ大切な期間で、子犬たちが産まれ、厳しい冬が来る前に逞しく成長する時だからです。 But this short summer is an important time for them because it is when the puppies are born and grow strong before the harsh winter arrives.

最近は冬の交通手段にスノーモービルが取り入れられるようになりました。でも、主流はまだ断然犬ぞりです。 Recently, snowmobiles have been introduced as a winter transportation. But the mainstream is still definitely dog sledding.

もう一点、2004年にこの地のアイスフィヨルドが世界遺産に登録されました。それにより、この町は一気に脚光を浴び始めました。 On another note, the ice fjord here was registered as a World Heritage site in 2004. This brought the town into the limelight.

観光客の量がグンと増え、豪華なホテルもでき、まださらに建設中の建物があちこちに見られます。また、新しく大きな飛行場の建設も計画されています。 The amount of tourists has increased dramatically, luxury hotels have been built, and there are still more buildings under construction here and there. There are also plans to build a new, large airfield.

今はコペンハーゲンとアイスランドから1日一便、そしてグリーンランドの他の街からも飛んでいるようですが、頻度は分かりません。　Right now there is one flight a day from Copenhagen and Iceland, and apparently also from other cities in Greenland, but I don’t know how often.

ただ、今後観光客の量の増加と共に頻度は増加していく事は必須です。便利になっていく一方、今後の街の変化がどうなるのか心配でもあります。　However, it is imperative that the frequency will increase with the increase in the amount of tourists in the future. While it is becoming more convenient, I am also concerned about how the town will change in the future.

観光に関して言えば、ガイド付きのボートツアーがたくさんあります。現地についてからでも予約が可能です。また、ハイキングもおすすめです。距離と難易度で4種類のハイキングコースがあります。それぞれ魅力的で、どれが一番と言いにくいです。ツンドラ地帯の植物を観察しつつ、目の前に巨大な氷山を眺める。時を超えた景色に圧倒されます。 As far as sightseeing is concerned, there are many guided boat tours available. You can book them even after you arrive there. Hiking is also recommended. There are four different hiking trails, varying in distance and difficulty. Each is fascinating in its own way, and it is difficult to say which is the best. While observing the flora of the tundra area, you will see a huge iceberg in front of you. You will be overwhelmed by the timeless scenery.

以上が町の紹介でした。次回からは私の感動した事を少しずつ書きます。 That was my introduction to the town. I will write a little more about what impressed me in the next issue.

追伸：行方不明のスーツケースが私たちの街、セイントジョージ空港まで配達されました。4つの飛行機を乗り継いで、超特急で配達されたようです。すでに諦めて旅行保険会社に連絡を取っていただけに、突然の配達に感激してしまいました。

P.S. The missing suitcases were delivered to our city, Saint George’s Airport, apparently via super-express delivery after four different flights. We were thrilled with the sudden delivery, as we had already given up and contacted our travel insurance company.

北極圏内の小さな町 Small Town Inside the Arctic Circle

グリーンランドの西側、北極圏内にあるイルリサットという町に行ってきました。 I visited the town of Ilulissat, located on the western side of Greenland, inside the Arctic Circle.

イルリサット滞在中の経験は、私の旅行歴の中でも、多分、トップ3に入るほど素晴らしいものでした。 My experience during my stay in Ilulissat was probably one of the top three most amazing experiences in my travel history.

その間に撮った写真は2万枚以上に上りました。これから写真をハードディスクにコピーしつつ、旅行記を少しずつ書いて聞きます。 The number of photos I took during that time amounted to more than 20,000. I will be writing a travelogue of the trip while copying the photos to my hard disk a little at a time.

ただ、私たちのスーツケースが行方不明となり、今だに所在が分からず落ち着きません。実のところ、行きのフライトも搭乗時間5分後にキャンセルになったり、帰りも同様な結果となりました。チェックインしたスーツケースはイルリサットからの飛行場から出ることはなく、そのまま行方不明になった可能性が大です。クレームも出していますが、音信不通です。今後 Iceland Air は一切使いません。それほど対応が悪かったです。ネガティブな事を書くことを一回だけ許してくださいね。 Upon returning from the trip, however, our suitcases have gone missing and we are still in the dark as to their whereabouts! As a matter of fact, our flight to the Ilulissat was cancelled 5 minutes after boarding time, and the same happened on the way back. It is very possible that our checked-in suitcases never left the airfield from Ilulissat and just went missing. We have filed a lost baggage report but have not heard from them yet. I will never use Iceland Air in the future. That’s how bad the service was. Please forgive me for once writing something negative.

さあ、フラストレーションのガス抜きができました。私たちの2度とない素晴らしい旅行の思い出を汚したくないので、今後、忘れることにして、さっさと先に進みます。 Now, the frustration has been vented. I don’t want to tarnish the memories of our once in a lifetime wonderful trip, so I will forget about it in the future and move on quickly.

鳥の分類表作り、まだまだ続きます。　Making a bird classification chart, continuing.

Excel シートを使って表を作っているので、行の番号を見るとおおよその進行状況がわかります。 The table is made using an Excel sheet, so the row numbers give an approximate progression.

ゲラ・ブッポウソウ類までで分類表の半分が終了したことになります。（2-87行まで）そして、今日からこの分類表の後半となります。(88-162行) 　Half of the taxonomic table has been completed up to the clade Picocoraciae (from to lines 2-87). And today we will start the second half of this table. (lines 88-162)

さて、ハヤブサ目ですが、以下の表のようにシンプルにまとめました。 Now, as for the order Falconiformes, I have simplified them as shown in the table below.

このグループの鳥たちは猛禽類です。そのため、かつてはタカ目に属していましたが、2008年以降、DNA分析の結果、スズメ目などに近しいことが判明し、真ハヤブサ形類の仲間になったということです。 The birds in this group are birds of prey. Therefore, they used to belong to the order Hawks, but since 2008, DNA analysis has shown that they are closer to sparrows and other birds of the order, and they are now members of the Eufalconimorphae, true falconiforms.

ただ、生物学の研究も他の分野と同じように複雑怪奇で、さまざまな意見があり、分類、系統表は今後もさらに進化していくことでしょう。だから私の作っている表は、あくまでも私個人の興味に基づいて抽出したものだけが収められている偏った表になっています。 However, the study of biology, like any other field, is complex and bizarre, and there are many different opinions, and classification and phylogenetic tables will continue to evolve further in the future. Therefore, the table I am making is a biased table that contains only extracts based on my personal interests.

上の3番目の写真ですが、アカオノスリとハヤブサの戦闘シーンです。ハヤブサの猛攻撃にアカオノスリが空から落ちて来るシーンも目撃しました。 The third photo above shows a battle scene between a Red-tailed Hawk and a Peregrine Falcon. We also witnessed a scene where a red-tailed hawk fell from the sky under the onslaught of the falcons.

でも、あまりにも長い戦いだったので、結果を待たずに引き上げました。このハヤブサですが、本当にハヤブサかどうか自信がないです。顔はハヤブサっぽいですが。ソウゲンハヤブサかもしれません。どっちだと思いますか？ But it was too long a fight, so we walked away without waiting for the results. By the way, although I said it is a Peregrine Falcon, I am not so sure about this identification. Although the face looks like a Peregrine, it could be a Prairie Falcon instead. Which do you think it is?

いずれにしろ、もっと画質のいいハヤブサの写真を撮る必要がありますね。 In any case, I need to take better quality Peregrine Falcon photos.

カワセミとキツツキ Kingfisher And Woodpecker

鳥の分類続きます。 Bird classification continues.

今日は黄色いハイライトの鳥たちについてです。 Today I will write about the birds with yellow highlights.

カワセミはブッポウソウという目の中に分類されている動物食の鳥です。全体的に鮮やかな色の鳥たちです。水辺に生息し、水面に急降下して魚類を捕食します。その他、虫や爬虫類も食べます。 The Kingfisher is a zoophagous (flesh eating) bird classified in the order Coraciformes. Overall, these birds are brightly colored. They live near water and prey on fish by swooping down to the surface of the water. They also feed on insects and reptiles.

数回カワセミを見かけましたが、写真に収められたのは、この2枚だけです。アメリカヤマセミです。 I saw Kingfishers several times, but these are the only two I was able to photograph. They are Belted Kingfishers.

この地に引っ越して来たばかりの頃、鳥の会の人たちと公園を歩いていた時に見つけました。鳥の会の人たちは高性能の双眼鏡を持っているので、遠いところの鳥も発見し教えてくれます。この時も興奮して早速撮りましたが、豆粒のようなイメージだったので忘れていました。 When we first moved here, I found this bird when I was walking in a park with a group of birders. The bird club members have high-performance binoculars, so they can spot and tell us about birds at a distance. I was so excited at this time that I immediately took a picture of it, but I had forgotten about it because the image was as small as a pea.

カワセミは気合を入れて撮ろうとしないと撮れません。今度は川辺でまさに魚を捕獲したばかりの時とかをキッチリと撮りたいです。 I can’t take pictures of Kingfishers unless I put a lot of effort into it. Next time, I would like to take a picture of a Kingfisher when it has just caught a fish by the riverside.

次にご紹介するのはキツツキです。 The next bird is the Woodpecker.

今回、キツツキ科を調べていたら、無数の種が含まれている事を知り驚きました。私の鳥分類表もさらに巨大化してきたので、ここでは私が撮影できたキツツキのみをリストします。 In researching the Woodpecker family this time, I was surprised to learn that it includes a myriad of species. Here I will list only the Woodpeckers I was able to photograph because my bird taxonomy list has grown even larger.

ちなみに、ゲラとかブッポウソウという分類名も鳥の観察歴が短い私には聞いたことがなく、不思議な名前でした。でも、日本語名としては普通に使われているんだと学習しました。 Incidentally, I had never heard of the taxonomical names “gera” and “buppoosoo” in Japanese language, which were also strange to me, having only a short history of bird observation. But I learned that they are commonly used as Japanese names.

以下、参考として、これらの名前の由来を説明します。　The following is an explanation of the origin of these names for reference.

「ゲラ」は「ケラ」から来ていて、「ケラ」とは木の中に住む虫のことです。江戸時代前から使われていたようです。まさにキツツキのことです。 “Gera” comes from “Kera”, and “Kera” is an insect that lives in trees. It has been used since before the Edo period. It is exactly what a Woodpecker is.

また、「ブッポウソウ」の名前の由来 は勘違いが原因だと言えます。以下、由来の要約です。　The origin of the name “Buppoosoo” can be attributed to a misunderstanding. Here is a summary of the origin

ブッポウソウは日本にやって来る渡り鳥で、5-６月ごろ、たった3週間ほどしか滞在しません。　また、コノハズクは5-６月ごろしか鳴かないフクロウです。The boubou is a migratory bird that comes to Japan and stays for only about three weeks around May and June. The Oriental Scops Owl is also an Owl that only hoots around May and June.

昔の人たちは、この２種の鳥たちを混同し、まだ見た事のない鳥が、まるで「ぶっ・ぽう・そう」と鳴いているようだと思いました。そこでこの幻の鳥をブッポウソウ（仏法僧）と名付けました。 People in the past confused these two species of birds and thought that the bird, which they had not yet seen, sounded as if it were calling “Buh-poh-soh”. Therefore, they named this phantom bird “Buppoosoo” (Buddha’s Prayer).

その後、ラジオが普及してきた1935年頃、この鳥の鳴き声をラジオで放送したところ、反響があり、鳴き声の主はコノハズクであったことが判明しました。でも、すでに定着していた２種の鳥の名前を変えるのは大変なので、そのままの名前が残っているということです。 　Later, around 1935, when radio became popular, the bird’s call was broadcast on the radio, and the response from listeners was so strong that it was discovered that the bird call was that of an Oriental Scops Owl. But it would be difficult to change the names of two birds that were already well-established, so the names have remained as they are.

昨日、一昨日と、ボブキャットの家族が遊びに来ています。 Yesterday and the day before, a family of Bobcats visited our home.

大抵、10:30pm 過ぎから朝の6:30amごろまで、西側の庭と裏庭でくつろいでいるようです。RINGセキュリティーカメラが捉えてくれました。 Mostly, they seem to relax in the west side yard and backyard from after 10:30 p.m. until about 6:30 a.m. Our RING security cameras caught this.

驚いたことに、私がちがリビングルームでテレビを見ていた頃にはすでに来ていて、バスルームで歯を磨いていた時も木の上から私たちを観察していたようです。 To our surprise, they had already arrived when we were watching TV in the living room, and seemed to be observing us from the tree while we were in the bathroom brushing our teeth.

特別な催し物があるわけでもなく、ただ、美しい花の中を歩き回るだけの行事でした。 There was no special event, just a walk through the beautiful flowers.

ピークは過ぎてしまいましたが、標高10,000フィート以上、(3,000 m 以上）にある公園はまだ春で、気温も低く気持ちのいいひと時でした。 Although peak season has passed, it was still spring in the park at over 10,000 feet (3,000 m) elevation, and the cool temperature made for a pleasant time.

馴染みのある花、高山にしか咲かない花、全てユニークで愛おしい。 Familiar flowers, flowers that bloom only in the high mountains, all unique and lovely.

その中でも全長3cmほどの小さい花は、誰もが見逃してしまいそうなほど小さい。開花していなかったら私も見逃していた花。どうやらナデシコ科の中のマンテマ属の花らしいです。 The smallest of these flowers, about 3 cm (1.2 inches) in length, are so small that anyone would have missed them. If they had not been in bloom, I would have missed these flowers too. Apparently, it is a flower of the genus Silene in the family Caryophllaceae.

あいにく雷がゴロゴロと鳴り、雨もぱらついて来たので急いで下山しました。 Unfortunately, thunder rumbled and rain began to sprinkle, so we hurried down the mountain.

鳥の分類、続いてます。 Bird classification continues.

フクロウは大きく2種類に分かれます。メンフクロウ科とフクロウ科です。 Owls are divided into two main families. The family Tytonidae (Barn-owls) and the family Strigidae (True owls).

メンフクロウ科の中にはメンフクロウしかいません。は名前が示すように、お面をつけているような顔が特徴です。 The Barn owl is the only member of the barn owl family. It is characterized by a masked face.

メンフクロウは世界中に分布していますが、私は一度も目撃したことがありません。英語の名前の通り、納屋とか廃屋などでも見られるそうです。この辺にもそんな場所がありそうなので鳥の会の人たちに聞いてみます。 Barn owls are distributed all over the world, but I have never seen one. As the name suggests, they can be found in barns and abandoned buildings. I will ask the birders about such places around here.

フクロウ科には無数のフクロウが属しています。列挙しきれないので、私のリストには目撃したもののみを入れました。 Countless owls belong to the owl family. Since it is impossible to enumerate them all, I have included only those that I have seen in my list.

フクロウ科の１種目はアナホリフクロウは いくつかの点でユニークなフクロウです。　One member of the owl family is the Burrowing owl which is unique in several ways.

  • 日中でも動き回る。 They move around even during the day.
  • 飛べるけど、地上を走り回っている時間の方が長い。だから足が長いのね。 They can fly, but they spend more time running around on the ground. That’s why they have long legs.
  • 地面に穴を掘って住む。 They live in burrows in the ground.

眉毛が白くておじいさんみたいな顔してますね。ジャシュアツリーの上に停まっていました。 In the picture above, he looks like an old man with white eyebrows. It was perched on top of a Joshua tree.

アメリカワシミミズクは私にとっては一番馴染み深いフクロウです。 The Great Horned Owl is the owl most familiar to me.

ここは「フクロウの森」です。勝手に名付けました。そこに入ってみると、確かにフクロウが生息するにはもってこいの場所でした。 This is “Owl Forest”. I took the liberty of naming it. When I entered there, I found that it was indeed a perfect place for owls to inhabit.

音を立てずに辺りを見渡すと、コットンツリーの上の方、トトロのような物体を発見しました。高鳴る気持ちを抑えて静かにシャッターを切りました。 I looked around without making a sound and spotted a Totoro-like object at the top of the Cotton Tree. I suppressed my rising emotions and quietly clicked the shutter.

鬱蒼として暗い中、しばらくすると崖の上の方の棚に巣があり、それを覆い隠すようにコットンツリーの枝が伸びていることがわかりました。更に私たちの目が暗さに慣れてくると、2羽、３羽、４羽と合計5羽見つけることができました。 It was dense and dark, but after a while we found a nest on a ledge at the top of the cliff, with Cottonwood tree branches growing up to cover it. As our eyes further adjusted to the darkness, we found a total of one, two, three, four, five birds.

ここはワシミミズクの家族が住んでいるところだったんですね。そして、ヒナが3羽巣離れをしたばかりだったのかもしれません。 So this was where a family of Great horned owls lived. Maybe three chicks had just left the nest then.

私たちの家にも時々訪れてくれます。 They visit our house from time to time.

昼も夜もウサギが飛び回っている環境です。彼らにとってはよりどりみどり、スーパーマーケットの状態です。下の写真はうさぎをゲットした直後、それを引きずりながら石の影に隠れようとしているところです。 This is an environment where rabbits are hopping around day and night. It is a supermarket situation for them. In the photo below, just after getting a rabbit, he is trying to hide behind a stone, dragging it behind it.

最後に紹介するのはニシアメリカオオコノハズクです。 Lastly, I would like to introduce the Western Screech Owl.

夜中、大きな木が立ち並ぶ川沿いの森の中、鳥の会の人たちと時折聞こえる鳴き声を頼りに歩き回りました。 In the middle of the night, in the forest along the river lined with large trees, I walked around with the bird club members, relying on the occasional hoo, hoo.

シャッターチャンスは3回ありましたが、夜中の撮影は非常に難しいので、これが最後に撮れたベストショットです。ネズミを捕獲したばかりだったので、ラッキーでした。 I had three opportunities, but this was the last best shot I could get taking pictures in the middle of the night. I was lucky because it had just captured a rat.

名前が示すように、日中は木の葉のようにカモフラージュしてジッとしているそうです。 As the Japanese name suggests, they are said to camouflage and stay still during the day like leaves on a tree.

昨日の独立記念日をみなさんはどう過ごされましたか？　How did you spend Independence Day yesterday?

暑いので、私はグータラと家の中で過ごしました。 It was so hot outside and I just stayed inside the house goofing around.

すると、ロビンの子供が裏庭に舞い降りて、何か言いたそうです。 Then a juvenile Robin swooped down in the backyard and said something to me.

あ、そうか。独立記念日のお知らせをしてくれていたんですね。 Oh, I see. You’ve been informing us about Independence Day.

大抵、１月ごろ、春を告げてくれるロビンですが、昨日は特別サービスをしてくれたようです。 Most of the time, around January, Robins herald spring, but the day before yesterday it provided a special service for me.

夜、花火が遠くから聞こえてきた頃、ミスタートッドがやって来ました。 At night, when fireworks could be heard in the distance, Mr. Toad hopped over.

あ、そうか。花火のお知らせをしに来てくれたんですね。 Oh, I see. You came to let us know about the fireworks.

暑い中、お疲れ様でした。 Thank you for your hard work in the hot weather.

そして、私はボーッとして、何もしない状態に戻りました。窓越しに見える花火を時折見ては、ゲームをしたり、テレビを見たりと、のんびりした独立記念日でした。 Then I went back to zoning out and doing nothing. It was a lazy Independence Day, playing games and watching TV, with occasional glimpses of fireworks through the window.
