On 4 July last year, a bolt of lightning struck the North Rim Visitor Center at Grand Canyon National Park, completely destroying the center and burning many of the surrounding trees.

Since then, work such as the clearing of rubble from the burnt-out site has been completed, but there is still no prospect of a return to normalcy.

Although the visitor center had burnt down, we expected that we would still be able to reach other viewpoints along Cape Royal Road. Unfortunately, however, Cape Royal Road had been closed for about a week, so we couldn’t get to those viewpoints either.

As there was nothing else to do, we passed the time by looking for the cabin we’d stayed in last time amongst the burnt-out bungalows.

Fire hydrants eerily stood amidst the ruins.

I was surprised to learn that this was the second fire at North Rim.

Reconstruction work has not yet begun. However, I do hope that a visitor center—even a simple one—will be built again.

The only bird I spotted in the car park was a raven. As there are no tourists, there must be no food scraps either; I wonder if that’s why neither birds nor other wildlife come here anymore.

The Aspen leaves lay beautifully spread across the ground, and amidst the blackened, scorched trees, they soothed our somewhat downcast spirits.

Winter is just round the corner here. I’ll be back next spring.
