Beyond the Clouds

Last Saturday’s market sales were only four coaster sets. That’s it.

It seemed that my coasters attracted a decent amount of attention, but did not sell well.

I had planned to hang the coasters, one at a time, on a wire rack with clothespins, but Banchan gave me a wonderful suggestion to attach a slotted bar to the wire-wall. So I made a prototype.

It seemed to work, so I bought a black grooved bar, cut and sanded it, and secured it with super glue.

I went into Saturday’s market confident that this might work, but the result was that I sold only four sets, and my confidence dropped to about half.

I went over to a competing photographer couple I have made friends with and blurted out a bit that I wasn’t selling very well again.

They have been selling at this location every weekend for over 10 years now. They told me that a lot had happened in that time, and that they had come this far with various innovations in the way they display their products, the way they print their photos, the size, and so on.

In comparison, I have only presented my stuff three times. I reflected on the fact that there must still be a lot of room for improvement. Then I remembered a Japanese word.

雲外蒼天 (the literal translation is “Out of the clouds, blue sky spreads towards heaven.”}

Here is my interpretation of the word: You can’t see anything amidst the chaotic clouds, but beyond the clouds is the bright blue sky. So now is the time to save your strength. The time will surely come when you will be able to break through the clouds with your powerful wings. When that time comes, you will flap your wings high and high into the vast blue sky!

So I decided to squeeze another idea out again.

I also got some great ideas from Banchan and made a prototype of a shelf to display a set of four coasters.

Of the three prototypes, I chose the one that was simplest and easiest to fold and carry.

Velcro allows it to fold flat for transporting and to stay upright for displaying.

I made six shelves in total.

I could make more, but this weekend I intend to display only 6 of the 21 sets.

And I will write short stories as time permits, with my thoughts and feelings on each set for people to read.

Let’s see what happens, I’m starting to look forward to Saturday again!

Country Road

I went to the John Denver tribute concert. A tribute in this context is a concert held in honor of.

A person named Chris Collins appeared as a John Denver look-alike, which made me remember the old days fondly. Actually, I have been to John’s concerts twice in Japan and once at UC Berkeley in California. I am not an ardent fan of his, but I can relate to many of the songs he wrote.

Sunshine on my shoulders makes me happy

Sunshine in my eyes can make me cry

The entire audience sang along in chorus. Especially while singing the song “Sunshine on my shoulders,” I remembered something important to me. “That’s right. I want to take pictures that touch my heart like this.” I was reminded of the time when I first started taking pictures with his song in mind.

Race Ended

I was fifth place in 65 minutes and 9 seconds.

I was 4 minutes slower than last year, but able to finish without any injuries, so I am satisfied.

I was the slowest of the women in the following picture. The second one from the left is 76 years old but finished in less than 60 minutes. Also, the second one from the right is 79 years old but finished in 63 minutes.

I was energized just by being with people who were positive and energetic at any age.

I thought I would stop running after this race, but I still feel like I will be running again next year.

Five More Days

“The real competition is against the little voice inside you that wants to quit.” George Sheehan

It’s a famous quote.

Last night I went to the opening ceremony for the Huntsman Senior World Games, in which I am competing.

This 100 year old woman used to compete in swimming every year until last year, but this year she will not be able to. Because she started cancer treatment. But the message was that she will be back next year.

Then there was a show that lasted about two hours, and I was impressed when the young people came in wearing flags from around the world.

I’m not doing so well in my practice because I’m injured and have lost time. But I won’t give up. I will not be defeated by the little voice inside me.

It’s only five days away. And it is time to adjust my physical condition. I would like to run faster, but I don’t care anymore. I will do a good job of muscle training and rest until race day.

Yesterday’s Sales

I once again participated in the open-air market held every Saturday. I did not have zero sales like last time. Below are the items sold.

Three sets of four coasters.
Two one-piece coasters.
Three pot holders.

Since I lowered the price so much, I lost $6 for the pot holders, and after deducting the card reader fee, etc., I made a total of $10. However, the entry fee to open a booth was $20. (Banchan and I rented two spaces for $60. He is using more than half of the total space, so we agreed that I pay $20.) After adding that expense, my income for the day was minus $10.

I lowered the price to the minimum I could afford in hopes of selling more, but this was the result.

The market is held in the parking lot of a venue where outdoor concerts are held. So future singers come here to practice and sing their hearts out.

。 Banchan already has his products on Etsy. I still want to set up a website. This requires time and effort, so until I can do it, I will continue to practice selling without giving up, to at least do market research!

Well, the day of my 10K race is approaching. There were already signs on the course saying that the road was closed for the day. I’m a bit down, but I’m going to run now.

Tomorrow’s Market

Today, I ran, but I was pretty tired so I stopped running after about 8 km. However, I was happy to see a tortoise crossing the road. We waited a while for it to cross the road to make sure it was not run over by a car.

Well, tomorrow I will be back to set up our booth at the Saturday market.

A week has flown by as I was adding new items and further examining prices again. There are still so many things to do, but I decided that I am not in a hurry.

New item, 5 “x5” metal print photos.

We participated at last Saturday’s market but made zero sales. This was the second time, and I thought I had prepared accordingly, but the result was unexpected.

Three sizes of photos are available: 8×8″, 5×5″, and 3.75″ coasters.

Unsure how to interpret it, I went around to all five participating photographers and asked them about their sales. To my surprise, all five responded that they had sold nothing, just as I had.

I share two tents with Banchan. My works are mainly the two tables on the right.

They encouraged me saying that it comes in waves, so I should just not worry about it and hope for the next week. Although we are competitors, I somehow began to feel a sense of closeness with them, as if we were comrades who were going through a difficult time together, which made me happy.

This business is still not on track due to all the expenses, but I am blessed with good people and a good environment, and I am having a lot of fun. I am sure it will work out in time.

Will Run Tomorrow

I have a strained right thigh muscle and have been out for a while, but will be back tomorrow.

After consulting with my trainer’s cat, it was decided that I can run 10 km if I take it slow. So I will run tomorrow.

17 days until race day already. I will simply do what I can without haste.

Too Much Running Is Not Good

It’s now 31 days away from race day.

I have been running 3 or 4 days a week. Then one day I stretch and the other day I do strength training. Each time I ran a distance of about 3 to 5 miles at different speeds.

Three days ago. I was running with my legs elevated as much as possible to increase my stride, and at about 80% of full speed. As a result, I strained my upper thigh muscle, the quadriceps femoris.

The next day, my trainer scolded me profusely. The reason it is important to follow the training plan is to avoid injury. Yet, I ignored it and got injured.

I didn’t have much time left, but my speed wasn’t increasing. My legs were tired, but such impatience must have been making me run extra hard.

Starting point of the race.

It is really hard not to push yourself too hard. I am sure this is the dilemma that professional athletes also encounter.

I will take a bath and go to bed, believing that I will be better by next week.

Knowing The Reality

It was the first time in my life that I have been a vendor in a market.

It is early in the morning, and the tents have not yet been set up at the venue.

The parking lot of the outdoor theater is open.

Since it was my first time, my goal was to join first and see how it goes.

Still, I expected to sell about 10 coaster sets.

The reality, however, was harsh.

I had the store open for four hours and sold only three coaster sets.

I think the main reason was that the price was too high. As soon as I lowered the price by $10, I quickly sold 3 sets.

But there are many other possible reasons why they didn’t sell. I should have put a cover on the back side of the canopy to separate it from the background of the parking lot. Most people didn’t even realize the larger pictures were there.

Also, my booth was simple, with only one table set far back, so more signs are needed further forward to bring people in.

I think the number of customers was low because the Labor Day holiday had just ended.

I am an amateur at this sort of thing, so I had a lot to learn from the very beginning of my preparation. But actually interacting with each customer and selling something is a whole different level.

I now understand a little more about the effort of all the people who are setting up a store. The reality is not so easy. I will try again in two weeks.

After The Storms

I have been busy this past month. Before I knew it, it was already September.

I was suffering with September 2 coming the next day, because I had set my target day to begin selling stuff at the local Saturday market on September 2. But then severe thunderstorms and torrential rains were coming. A frog was flopping on the window.

On the morning of September 2, I planned to leave home before 7 am to go to the market. It was the first time I was going to open my booth there. I worked very hard over the past month to get ready. But I had to give up because of the rain.

Well, such things happen. I’ll quickly get back on track and focus on my goals for next Saturday.

Here are my products. I spread out my store in our living room.

I made five metal prints. The others are various sets of 4 coasters each.

They are mostly wildlife photos from my past 15 years or so. Encouragingly, I already sold one set before I opened the store. That was a set of Bobcat coasters.

My goal is to regain the initial investment by the end of the year. The higher the goal, the better.

Since Ban-chan had already started attending art festivals a year ago, it made me feel that I could do it too. I am grateful for his courage.

Thanks to the heavy rain, we had a visit last night from a brand new type of animal.

This is a large American bullfrog, measuring 6.5 inches in length.

We looked around the house this morning, but could not find it. It was the first nice day in a long time, and it must have gone back to a pond somewhere in a hurry.

Thanks to the storm, we had another leak. Oh dear! Many of our neighbors have reported lots of damages, with trees falling over and flooding into their houses. But after the storm, seeing the grass and trees shining in the light gives me courage.

I’ll be fine. Next Saturday, it will be fine!

Strength Training

Physical fitness becomes more important as we age. I use the treadmill and strength training machine exclusively now because of the heat.

A virtual hike at Grand Canyon with a treadmill.

I still have neck pain that has gotten especially bad in the last year. Chiropractic did not help, so I had an MRI scan done. As expected, it was bone inflammation due to worn out cartilage; I will see a neck specialist in two weeks.

It was 16 sessions total from rim to river and up.

And while I was at it, I also had a DEXA scan to measure bone density. The result was T-2.8, which was bad. I have osteoporosis. I was very surprised and this was more of a shock to me. I adjusted my calcium supplements with my doctor, and will check again in a year.

My #1 question was what to do and what not to do. Especially running.

It was 4 sessions running the half marathon at Kauai Hawaii.

I was told that running is a good thing, so I will definitely keep running. And tomorrow I will start the training for the 10K race. My goal is to train for 10 weeks until the race day, training my muscles and gradually increasing my speed.

Her running form was beautiful that I learned a lot..

It is 71 days until the race day. This upcoming race is full of strong people. They have been running since they were young and can run 10 km in less than 60 minutes. I am a beginner, and a grandmother who started running last year, so I am not sure how far I can push myself. Last year, my record was 61:33, which was third in my age group. This year, I don’t think I can shorten my time by any stretch of the imagination.

The famous Boston Marathon. I just started it.

But still, I’m going to try my best. I’ll blow off osteoporosis, get over my neck pain, and try for sub-61!

I think she ran sub 5+. I couldn’t keep up with her so I ran at 5 mph.

Note: “Sub” in “sub60” refers to the English prefix “sub,” which means “below. In marathon running, “sub-6” means to run a full marathon in less than 6 hours. My goal is to run 10 km in “sub-61”, less than 61 minutes.

Editing Red-Spotted Toad

It is a small toad, about 1 inch. It has probably just come ashore.

I took this picture last August. The toad itself is a nice photo, but I just didn’t like the diagonal crossing branch. So I removed the branches using Photoshop for the first time in a while.

Which is better?
