旅の思い出はラプソディー イン イエロー。 My most recent travel memories are Rhapsody in Yellow.
飛行機で旅出したその時から、眼下に見えた山も地平線も踊り出しました。 From the moment I took flight, the mountains and horizon below began to dance.
友人達に会いにカリフォルニアに飛び、そしてロッキー山脈を頂くコロラド州デンバーへ。 I flew to California to see my friends, then on to Denver CO, nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.
夜遅く、スキー場で有名なベイルに降り立った時は、1.5 ℃。標高8,120フィート (2,475 m) ですから当然ですが、数時間前には30 ℃ のカリフォルニアから来たので驚きました。でも、もっと驚いたのは翌朝の景色でした。 Late at night, when I landed in Vail, famous for its ski slopes, it was 35 F. Given the elevation of 8,120 feet (2,475 m), this was to be expected, but coming from 90 F California just hours earlier, I was surprised. But what surprised me even more was the view the next morning.
朝の気温は -1 ℃、眼前に突然広がる黄色の世界に息を飲みました。 The morning temperature was 30 Fahrenheit, and I gasped at the sudden expanse of yellow before my eyes.
この町に来た理由は、この町のアートフェスティバルに招待されていたバンちゃんに合流するためでした。 The reason I came to this town was to meet up with Ban-chan, who had been invited to the town’s art festival known as Artisan Rhapsody.

冬は当然スキー場となりますが、夏は断然マウンテンバイクで賑わうんですね。 In winter, it naturally becomes a ski resort, but in summer, it’s definitely bustling with mountain bikers.
そして、ワンコ達。 And the dogs.
私のお気に入りは、この子達。 My favorites are these little ones.
ということで、大好きな犬がいっぱい、黄色に輝くアスペンの葉と共に、街全体が踊っていました。まさにラプソディー イン イエロー！ And so, the whole town was dancing, filled with beloved dogs and glowing yellow aspen leaves. Truly a Rhapsody in Yellow!
一歩を踏み出して、再出発をしました。 I took a step forward and made it as a fresh start.
とっても小さい一歩だから誰にも気が付かれない。でも、渾身の力を込めて踏み出した記念すべき一歩。 It’s so small that no one notices it. But it’s a memorable step taken with all my strength.
フェイスブック、インスタグラム、Xと、ソーシャルネットワークのアカウントを次々に削除していきました。もう雑音はいらない。そして、最後に残ったのはLinkedInでした。 I deleted my Facebook, Instagram, and X accounts one after another. No more noise. The last one remaining was LinkedIn.
もう仕事をするつもりもないので、全く必要ないのです。でも、このアカウントを消してしまうと、私がしてきた過去とそれに繋がっている社会も消し去るようで、踏ん切りがつきませんでした。 I have no intention of working anymore, so I don’t need it at all. However, deleting this account would be like erasing my past and the community connected to it, so I couldn’t bring myself to do it.
でも、ついに一歩踏み出せました。そして私は静かにサイバー空間から消えていきました。 But finally, I took that step. And then I quietly disappeared from cyberspace.
もちろん、このブログは残しています。ただ、肩書きのない素の私、今の私だけがいるという自覚、それが気持ちいい。 Of course, I’m keeping this blog. However, it simply feels good to be aware that this is just me, without any titles, just the real me as I am now.
一歩踏み出せた私に送ります。「ありがとう、私。がんばったね！」 I send these words to myself for taking that first step. “Thank you, me. good job!”
写真ワークショップの予定地の地図です。 Here is a map of the proposed sites for the photo workshop.
地図上、右下のカルガリーから出発し、北上してNordeggで2泊しました。その後、私たちが病のため皆と別れてRed Deer という街で治癒中、他の人たちはJasperへと向かい素晴らしい写真を撮っていました。😢 We started in Calgary, bottom right on the map, and headed north to Nordegg where we stayed for 2 nights. Then while we were recovering from the flu in a town called Red Deer, others were heading to Jasper to take some great photos. 😢
もちろん、私たちだってカナディアンロッキーの冬景色を諦めるわけには行きません。皆がLake Louise に行く時に合わせて合流することにしました。復活だ！ Of course, we were not about to give up the winter scenery of the Canadian Rockies. We decided to meet up with the others when they got to Lake Louise. It’s time to come back!
すでにワークショップの半分以上が消化されていました。それでも、野生の馬やワタリガラスに出会ったりして、私たちができる限りの時間を楽しんでいたと思います。 More than half of the workshop had passed already. Still, I think we enjoyed our time as much as we could, meeting wild horses and ravens.
皆と合流した翌朝、夜明け前、フェアマウントホテルの目の前に広がる湖とその後ろの山を撮る予定でした。 The morning after we met up with everyone, just before dawn, we planned to take pictures of the lake in front of the Fairmont Hotel and the mountains behind it.
あいにく全く天候が悪く、朝日を受けた山肌はみえませんでした。 Unfortunately, the weather was not good at all, and we could barely see the mountain’s surface in the morning sun.
夕暮れ、今度は河原から Castle Mountain を撮影することにしました。下の写真、右に見えているのが私の三脚です。 At dusk, we decided to photograph Castle Mountain from the riverbank. In the photo below, you can see my tripod on the right.

岩壁にうっすらと光があたってますが、光は届いてくれませんでした。 There is a faint light on the rock wall, but the light did not reach us.
とりわけ風景写真の撮影は、どうしても一人の世界に入ってしまうように思えます。でも、みんなと別行動をとっていたわたしたちには、他の写真家たちとの会話が新鮮で、楽しいものとなりました。 Especially when shooting landscapes, it seems that we are always in our own world. However, for us who had been separated from everyone else, it was refreshing and enjoyable to talk with other photographers.
列車を延々と待ち続けた朝でした。でも、天候も悪いし、列車も来なかったので諦めました。 It was a morning of endless waiting for the train. But the weather was bad and the train never came, so we gave up.
翌日、もう一度同じ場所に行き、河原まで降りて行った時の写真。私だけなら絶対に降りていかなかったと思います。 The next day, we went to the same spot again and I took this picture when I went down to the riverbank. If I were alone, I would never have gone down there.
そして、河原から１5分ぐらいかけて上まで登り終えた時に、奇跡が起きました。待ち続けていた列車が突然来たんです！ Then, when I had finished climbing to the top, which took about 15 minutes from the riverbank, a miracle happened. The train we had been waiting for suddenly came!
皆と狂喜しました。 We were all overjoyed.
天候には恵まれませんでしたが、楽しい写真家たちと共に過ごしたカナディアンロッキーは良い思い出になっていくことでしょう。Although the weather was not ideal, the Canadian Rockies with a group of fun photographers will be a great memory of mine.
最後に、Banff に移動中の時の景色。 Finally, here is a view of Banff while we were on the way there.
全然珍しい動物ではないエルクでしたが、鼻の上が雪で白くなっていたのを見てうれしくなりました。 Although the Elk is not a rare animal at all, I was happy to see that the tip of its nose was white with snow.
意気揚々とカナダでの写真のワークショップに出かけたのですが、ワークショップ1日目にして病に倒れてしまいました。 I went to a photography workshop in Canada with great enthusiasm, but on the first day of the workshop, I fell ill.
エブラハム湖上での写真撮影は、このワークショップの山場だったので、5回ほど訪れる予定でした。でも、無念にもインフルエンザにかかり、下見の時の写真が唯一撮れたしゃしんとなりました。写真となりました。 Photography on Abraham Lake was the highlight of the workshop, and we had planned to shoot there about five times. But unfortunately, I caught the flu, and the photo from the preview shoot became the only photo I took.
さて、この場所の何がすごいのか。 So, what is so great about this place?
湖底の草から発生するメタンガスが水上に達する前に凍りついた湖水の中に閉じ込められ、そのまま固まってしまったんですね。また、上の写真の斜めの白い線は強風によってさらわれている雪です。強風のため、雪は湖上に溜まることはなないので、氷の中のメタンガスのバブルが見えるということです。 The methane gas generated from the grass at the bottom of the lake was trapped in the frozen lake water before reaching the surface, and has solidified as it is. Also, the diagonal white lines in the photo above is snow being blown away by strong winds. Because of the strong winds, the snow does not accumulate on the lake, which means that the methane gas bubbles in the ice are visible.
気温は摂氏-35C（華氏-30）ただ、強風によって気温は更に低下して、エブラハム湖上の温度は摂氏-40C (華氏-40F）以下となっていました。 Temperatures were -35 Celsius (-30 Fahrenheit), but strong winds brought temperatures down even lower, with temperatures on Lake Abraham below -40 Celsius (-40 Fahrenheit).
バンちゃんのまつ毛まで凍りついている。 Even Banchan’s eyelashes are frozen.
まともに顔をまともに向けていた人は、皮膚がむけていたと言ってました。 Those who had their faces turned directly into the wind said their skin peeled off.
携帯の電池もあっという間に消耗され、このビデオを撮ったら電池切れとなってしまいました。 The battery in my cell phone was quickly drained, and when I took this video, the battery ran out.
翌日から宿のベッドの中、松尾芭蕉の有名な一句が何回も頭の中を流れていました。 From the next day, while in bed at the inn, a famous Haiku by Matsuo Basho (Japanese poet) played over and over in my head.

標高8,117 ft (2,474m) にあるコロブ貯水池のアスペンの葉は既に黄色く色付いていました。 The aspen leaves at Kolob Reservoir, at an elevation of 8,117 ft (2,474 m), were already turning yellow.
もうずいぶん前から秋になっていたんですね。 It has been autumn for quite some time now.
私たちはルイスキツツキがいると聞いたので、まだ見たこのとない鳥を求めて行って来ました。 We had heard there were Lewis’s woodpeckers, so we went in search of this bird, which we had not yet seen.
とても気持ちが良い秋の日で、しかも、目的のキツツキを見ることができて満足です。ただ、再び膨大な量の写真の山に埋もれてしまうことになったので、ルイスキツツキについては後日書きます。 It was a very pleasant autumn day, and besides, we were happy to see the woodpecker we wanted. However, I will write about the Lewis’s woodpecker at a later date, as I am once again buried under a huge pile of photos.
その代わり、今日は、帰り道に出会った羊について書きます。 Instead, today I write about sheep we met on our way home.
貯水池を北上し、しばらく行くとシーダーブレイクス国定公園が遠くに見えて来ました。そして、草原のあちこちで羊たちが草を食んでいました。 After a short distance north of the reservoir, Cedar Breaks National Monument came into view in the distance. And here and there sheep were grazing in the meadows.

これから冬を超えてますます毛が伸びて丸くなっていくのでしょうね。 I am sure they will grow more and more hairy and round over the winter.
ちょっと触ってみたいと思い、近くに行こうとしましたが、やはり、逃げられてしまいました。 Wishing to touch them, I tried to get close to them, but of course, they ran away from me .
清々しい秋の日に、私たちの心を一新するように、秋風が通り過ぎて行きました。 On a crisp autumn day, an autumn breeze passed by, refreshing our hearts.
バーミリオンクリフ国定公園内で見かけました。 I saw them in the Vermilion Cliffs National Monument.
休憩のために立ち寄った名もない場所にジュニパーの木が立っていました。 A juniper tree stood in an unnamed spot where we stopped for a break.
わー、ジュニパーの実がいっぱい！ Wow, lots of juniper berries!
鳥たちはここには来ないのかもしれません。 Maybe the birds don’t come here.
鳥たちが食べなかったら、こんなにたくさんの実が勿体無いと思ってしまうのは私だけでしょうか。 Am I the only one who thinks that so many berries would be a waste if the birds do not eat them?
腰を下ろしていた砂岩の上には、さまざまな地衣類が付着していました。長い年月をかけて岩をも侵食してしまうパワーを持っています。 The sandstone on which I was sitting was covered with a variety of lichens. They have the power to erode even the rocks over a long period of time.
地衣類のようにジュニパーの実もそのまま居続けたら、新しいジュニパーの木が生えてくるのかな。それとも、もっと他に隠されたパワーがあるのかな。 I wonder if juniper berries, like lichens, will grow new juniper trees if they stay in place. Or is there some other hidden power in them?
パリアはグランド ステアケース エスカラテ国定公園内にあるゴーストタウンの名前です。 Pahreah, aka Paria, is the name of a ghost town in the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument.

ユタ州には145ものゴーストタウンがあるそうで、そのリストに載っています。 There are 145 ghost towns in Utah, and this town is on that list.
来るつもりはなかったのに立ち寄ってみました。でも、その景観に驚いてしまいました。ちょっと立ち寄るような場所じゃない。 We dropped by even though we weren’t planning to come. But we were surprised by the view. It’s not the kind of place you would stop by for a minute.
オレゴン州にあるジョンデイ化石層国定公園内にあるペインテッドヒルを思い起こさせます。 It reminds me of the Painted Hills in the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in Oregon.
じっくりと時間をかけて探索し、ゴールデンアワーに写真を撮りたい場所です。This is a place to take your time to explore and take pictures during the golden hour.
「また絶対来るからね。」と言って、後ろ髪を引かれる思いで立ち去りました。” I’ll definitely be back.” we said, and then left with a sigh of relief in our hearts.
ナバホ砂岩でできているホワイトポケットはまるで大海の荒波でした。 White Pocket, made of Navajo sandstone, has many forms that look like the rough waves of the ocean.
ホワイトポケットはバーミリオンクリフ国定公園内にあります。 White Pocket is located in Vermillion Cliffs National Monument.
ここに行くには、舗装されていない凸凹の道を延々と4輪駆動で行くしかありません。 The only way to get here is by endless high clearance four-wheel drive vehicles on uneven, unpaved roads.
ホワイトポケットが見える場所にテントを張り、キャンプすることになりました。 We decided to pitch our tent and camp where we could see White Pocket.
高校時代の日本でのキャンプ経験を除くと、これで3回目です。でも、テントの中に寝るということ自体は私の最大のチャレンジです。アリや虫の攻撃に遭った経験があるからです。また、日本アルプスの尾根沿いで暴風雨にあい、テント内に停滞していたトラウマもあります。だから、今でもやっぱり好きじゃない。 This is my third camping experience, excluding my high school years in Japan. But sleeping in a tent itself is my biggest challenge. I have experienced attacks by ants and insects. I also had a traumatic experience of being stuck inside a tent after being caught in a storm along a ridge in the Japan Alps. So I still don’t like it.
でも、ホワイトポケットの日の出、日の入り時の写真を撮るためたなら仕方がない。 But I had no choice if I wanted to photograph at sunrise and sunset there.
ジュニパーの木に囲まれた場所を選びました。We chose a spot surrounded by juniper trees.月明かりが眩しすぎるくらいでした。 The moonlight was too bright.
テントの設置もできたので、早速ホワイトポケットを見に行きました。 We finished setting up the tent and immediately went to see White Pocket.
ここには知る人ぞ知る有名なスポットがあります。だからその写真を撮ってみたいと思っていました。バンちゃんは今回で2度目なのでその場所に案内してくれました。 There is a famous spot here that is well known to those in the know. So I wanted to take its picture. Ban-chan guided me to that spot since this was his second time.
見えてきました！ Yes, I can see it!
ここでバンちゃんと別れ、一人で夕暮れを待ちました。どのアングルで撮るのが良いのか考えながら、空を見て、鳥の観察もして、影がだんだん長くなっていく様子を観察していました。 Here I parted from Ban-chan and waited for dusk. I watched the sky and observed the birds, thinking about which angle would be best to capture the scene, and observed the shadows getting longer and longer.
iPadを使っていらっしゃる方なら多分わかる。iPadのデフォルトの壁紙の写真です。比べてみてください。撮影の季節が違うからか光と影が違いますね。でも、まあ、良いかな。 If you’re an iPad user, you probably recognize it: it’s a picture of the iPad’s default wallpaper. Compare them. The light and shadows are different because of the different season when the photo was taken. But, well, it’s okay.
その後は光との競争です。 After that, it’s a race against the light.
すでに日は沈んでしまっていたので、わずかな光を探して走り回っていました。 The sun had already set, so I was running around looking for the slightest glimmer of light.
もうISOを2000以上に引き上げても上手く撮れないほど暗くなってきました。 It was getting so dark that I could no longer get a good shot even if I raised the ISO to 2000 or higher.
翌朝、日の出前にテントを出発して、再びホワイトポケットに行きました。 The next morning, we left our tent before sunrise and went back to White Pocket.
光が差し込んできたころ、自分の立っている場所を眺めてつくづく納得しました。 When the light began to shine, I looked at where I was standing and was truly convinced.
私はまさに陸の上にある荒海の上に立っていた！ I was standing on a rough sea above the very land!
もう一度iPadの木に会いに行き、もしかしたらもう2度と会えないかもしれない景色に別れを告げました。 I went to see the iPad tree again and said goodbye to a view I may never see again.
「いつも忙しいアヒルのおばさん」と名付けた石。今日も朝からお出かけですね。 The stone I named “Aunt Duck, always busy.” You are going out in the morning today, too.
私の大好きな場所の一つとなりました。 It became one of my favorite places.
最後に、簡単なホワイトポケットのオーバービュービデオを撮りました。サイズ的には大きくないです。裏側の景色などは入っていないので、多分、このビデオの景色の2-3倍ぐらいの広さと考えて良いと思います。 Finally, I took a quick White Pocket over view video. It is not large in size. It does not include the view of the back side of it, so you can probably consider it to be about 2-3 times larger than the view in this video.
セイントジョージの家を出て、グランドキャニオン国立公園北側で一泊、その後、バーミリオンクリフの中のホワイトポケットでキャンプして帰ってくるという短い旅でした。でも、個人的にはチャレンジングな経験でした。 It was a short trip, leaving my home in Saint George, staying overnight on the north side of Grand Canyon National Park, and then camping in White Pocket in the Vermillion Cliffs before returning home. But it was a personally challenging experience.
多分、ほとんどの人は人気のある南側から渓谷を見ることになるのではないでしょうか。なぜなら、交通の便が良いことと、太陽の光が南側から当たるので、北側の渓谷斜面が下の方まできれいに見えるからです。 Most people will view the canyon from the popular south side. This is because of the convenience of transportation and the fact that sunlight hits the canyon from the south, so the canyon slopes on the north side can be seen beautifully all the way down to the bottom.
一方、北側から渓谷を見ると、確かに影がたくさんあって、地層の変化が見えにくいです。渓谷までのアプローチがとんでもなく長く、疲れた頃に終点ロッジに到着します。でも、そんな短所が長所で趣があります。森林保護地区に咲くワイルドフラワーはワシントン州のオリンピック国立公園を思い起こさせてくれます。観光客の数が少ない事も落ち着ける要因でもあります。 On the other hand, looking at the canyon from the north, there are indeed many shadows and it is difficult to see the changes in the formations. The approach to the canyon is ridiculously long, and you arrive at the final lodge when you are tired. But such shortcomings are quaint in their advantages. The wildflowers in the forest preserve remind me of Olympic National Park in Washington State. The small number of tourists is also a calming factor.
コロラド川が太鼓の昔から周りの岩を削り取りながら流れた結果に出来た渓谷が公園の中心なので、当然、コロラド川が中心を流れ、公園を北と南に分断しています。北側から南側に車で行きたいとしたら、5時かぐらいかかります。 Since the center of the park is the canyon that was formed as a result of the Colorado River carving away at the surrounding rocks since ancient times, the Colorado River naturally flows through the center of the park, dividing the park into north and south sections. If you wanted to drive from the north to the south rim by car, it would take about five hours.
ロバのブライティー。人も含めて運搬作業をしていた人気者のロバでした。 Brighty the donkey. He was a popular donkey who did the carrying work, including people.
渓谷を降りて反対側の渓谷を目指すハイキングは、1日で行ける人たちもいますが、よっぽどな健脚者でないと死に繋がります。99％の人たちには渓谷の下で一泊することをお勧めします。 The hike down the canyon to the other side of the canyon, which some people can do in a day, is deadly unless you are very fit. 99% of people are advised to hike down the canyon and spend the night.
金色の鼻を撫でると幸運を招くと信じられています。 It is believed that stroking the golden nose brings good luck.
今回は、北側にあるログキャビンの予約ができたので、ゴールデンアワー（日の出と日の入りの前後1時間ぐらいのこと）の写真を期待しました。 This time, I was able to reserve a log cabin on the north rim, so I expected to take pictures during the golden hour (about an hour before and after sunrise and sunset).

でも、残念なことにLAｍの山火事の煙が押し寄せてきていたので、視界は最悪でした。 But unfortunately, the smoke from the LA wildfires was pushing in, so visibility was terrible.

それでも深く刻まれた渓谷は私たちを魅了させてくれました。 Still, the deeply carved canyon left us spellbound.
