スネイクプラントの花の意味 Meaning of Snake Plant Flowers

私の仕事部屋の窓際にあるスパニッシュブルームはもう満開。その横のクレオソートも黄色く花をつけています。ウキウキする春です。でも、花粉症なので窓を開けずに鑑賞しています。 The Spanish broom right outside of my study is fully blooming. The creosote plant also looks happy with yellow flowers. Aren’t they pretty? But I never open the window for viewing them because I have pollen allergy unfortunately.

それに比べると室内の観葉植物は花が咲かないので安心です。 On the contrary, the house plants don’t bloom and make me feel very safe.

と、思っていたらなんとスネイクプラントがゴソゴソと花を咲かせてきているではありませんか。今まで一度もみた事がありません。That’s what I thought all this time. But I was so shocked to see flowers growing from my snake plant. I have never seen anything like it and didn’t know what to do with it.

慌ててウェブ検索をすると、以下のことが書かれていました。 I quickly searched through websites and found this:

滅多にあることではないので、ラッキーと思っていい。でも、主に2つの事を私に告げている。一つは水が足りない。もう一つはポットが窮屈になっている。つまり、「植え替えをしてくれ〜！」と叫んでいる。 You consider it as a lucky sign and as a rare incident. However, at the same time, the plant is telling you that it is so tight in the pot and needs more water. In other words, it is screaming, “Re-potting please!”

そうか。。。「近日中に植え替えしてあげるからね。」 Got it. “I will re-pot you soon.”

 

クロゼットの整理 Organizing Closet

整理整頓大好きです。 I love organizing things.

バスルームの改装の際、ベッドルームとウォークインクロゼットの物を全部移動しました。その時、「タンスを無くしてしまおう。」と思い立ちました。下の写真が使っていたタンスです。今はゲストハウスに移動しました。 We moved everything out from our master bedroom and closet when we started the bathroom project. At that time, I thought it would be much nicer if I don’t bring the drawers back into the bedroom. Those drawers are shown below. It is now in our Casita for guests to use.

問題は、5段のタンスの中に収まっていた物をどこに持っていけばいいかと言う事です。当然、ウォークインクロゼットの中に収めることになりますが、どうやって？ The question is, “how can I bring the contents of the drawers into the already crowded walk-in closet?”

バンちゃん側の変化はありません。Banchan’s side of the closet has not change.

私側。私の衣類の全てが収まりました。（コート類は除く。）This is my side. All the clothes I own are stored here except for jackets.

どちらかと言うと小さいです。でも、上手に活用すればいい。その為には、お得意のリサイクルの箱作りが大いに役立ちました。It’s a rather small closet, but it’s not bad if you use it wisely. To achieve this, my box making using recycled paper worked very well.

収納したい物に合わせて横幅を調整し、長さはタンスの奥行きに合わせればいい。13の長い箱を作りました。 I measured the width of things I want to store, then depth, length and width of the shelves. In total, I made 13 long boxes.

完成図です。要点は、畳む衣類は全て立てること。近藤麻理恵さんの影響を受けてます。Here is the view of the cabinet. The key idea is to have everything standing up rather than laying down. I am influenced by KonMari (Marie Kondo)’s idea.

タンスの中にあった物が全部、それに以前から収納していたタオル、シーツ類が全部収納されました。気持ちいい！プロジェクト完了！ All the things in the drawers, as well as the towels and sheets I previously stored in there are nicely nestled in here. What a great feeling! My little project is now complete.

リンゴとオート麦 Apple and Oat

ハイキングに持っていけるかなと思って、作ってみました。 I made these bars to bring for hikes.

両方とも試食してもらいましたが、反響はイマイチでした。 I asked people to eat both of them, but the reaction wasn’t so good.

それでも、バンちゃんはこちらのアップルパイのバーがいいとのコメント。 Even still, Banchan preferred the Apple Pie bars.

私はこちらのキャラメルオート麦のバーがいいと思いました。 I preferred the Salted Caramel bars.

いずれにしろ、材料を知っている私としては、どちらも程々にしておきたいです。何しろ調子に乗ってこれらのバーだけじゃなく、食後のデザートをバクバク食べていたせいで2カ月間に 2.5 kg も体重増となりました。 In any case, I must say it’s a good idea to eat them conservatively because I know the fattening ingredients. Eating these bars as well as other sweets after dinner without thinking about the calorie intake, I gained 5 pounds in two months.

引き出しの整理　Organizing Drawers

宅配サービスの箱で箱を作りました。I made organizer boxes out of delivery service boxes.

箱に合う色の中敷きも作りました。I also made liners for them with matching colors.

全部バスルームの引き出しの中に収まりました。All these boxes fit into my bathroom drawers.

整理整頓大好きです。毎日使う様々な小物が使いやすくなりました。I love organizing things. It became so much easier to use the little things I use everyday with these organizer boxes.

床のメンテ Floor Maintenance

タイルの床のシーリングは、自分でできます。 You can seal tile and grout all by yourself.

この家に引っ越してくる前にシーリングをしてもらいましたが、光沢が無くなってきたところでした。そこで今回は自分でしました。光沢のあるシーラーです。We asked a professional before moving in to this house three years ago. But it was about time to do it again. So I applied High-Gloss Finish Sealer all by myself.

下の写真はシーリングをする前（左）とした後（右）。The picture below is before (left) and after (right) applying.

2-3 回のコーティングでピカピカ、気持ちいい。床の動物たちも喜んでいます。It looks so shiny and nice after the 2-3 coatings. Animals on the floor are also happy with it.

ついでに家具の足に小さな花のパッドを編んであげました。I crocheted tiny flower pads for furniture legs to protect the floor.

また、丸い足の椅子には丸いカーペットを敷いてあげました。I also bought small rugs for the swivel chairs.

これで掃除もしやすくなりました。床を傷つけず家具を動かせるよになったからです。All these changes made the house cleaning work so much easier because you don’t need to worry about scratching the floor when you move them.

レモンタルト Lemon Tart

バンちゃんは美味しいと言って食べてくれましたが、私の採点はもう少し厳しい。Although Banchan said it was very good, my score for this dessert is lower than his.

オーブンの温度も関係してレシピの3倍以上の時間をかけてもタルトが固まらなかったし、レモン汁が少し多すぎたかも。 I spent three times longer for the baking time than the recipe called for, but it still didn’t come out looking right. The oven temperature didn’t go high enough, or I might have added too much lemon juice.

簡単かと思ったレモンタルトは意外に難しかったです。 I thought it was easy enough, but the Lemon Tart was much more difficult than I expected.

シュークリーム Cream Puffs

聞いてはいましたが、これには高度な技術と時間がかかる。レシピには所要時間が2時間と記載されていますが、4時間かかってしまいました。I’ve heard from people that cooking a batch of Cream Puffs is difficult and requires some technique to make it right. According to the recipe, it takes 2 hours, but it took 4 hours for me.

そもそも外側のシューが膨らんでくれない。何がいけなかったんでしょうね。I don’t know what went wrong but the “choux” didn’t puff.

それでも、中のカスタードクリームは美味しくできたんで、チョコレートも綺麗じゃないけど、一応努力賞を自分にあげましょう。また作りたいかというと、疑問です。On the contrary, I made the pastry cream very well. The chocolate wasn’t thin enough, so it didn’t drizzle like the recipe picture, but I think I can give myself a prize for the effort. Um, do I want to bake it again? Let me think about it.

浴室の改装：改善点 Bathroom Remodel: Improvements

使いやすくなった！ It became much easier to use.

前の浴槽：入り口に蛇口があり、狭くなって浴槽に入りにくかった。また、腰掛け部分が平らではなかったので、浴槽に入りにくいどころか足の短い私には深い浴槽から出るのが怖かった。Tub Before: It was tight around the tub entrance because of the faucet. Also, around the tub were rough textured tiles and the rim of the tub sitting on top of it created an uneven surface. So it made it uncomfortable to sit on, which made me scared to go in and out of the tub.

今の浴槽：蛇口を壁に取り付けたので、俄然入り口が広がった。また、浴槽周りもスムーズになった。これで深い浴槽でも怖くない。年寄りに優しい。Tub After: The entrance to the tub became much wider because we moved the faucet to the wall. The tub surround is now smooth dolomitic marble. I can sit on it now which makes it easier for elderly people to go in and out the tub.

前のシンク：ベイスンが小さいのに蛇口が大きかった。Sink Before: The basin was so tiny but the faucet was large.

今のシンク：ベイスンを巨大にした。Sink After: We installed the biggest sink available.

シャワー室のベンチ：カウンタートップと同じ素材（花崗岩と大理石の中間の石）にしたので柔らかい感触になった。今までの物置場所が、ちゃんとしたベンチになった。Bench in the shower room: Changed the surface from tile to the same material with counter top, dolomitic marble, so the surface is soft and smooth. I can sit on it now instead of using it as a shelf.

キャビネットの高さ：左に見えているのは私のキャビネットです。右に見えるキャビネットの壁はバンちゃんのです。彼は身長が186cmもありますが、私は150cmしかありません。だから私のキャビネットの高さをバックスプラッシュ分ほど（15cmぐらい）低くしてもらいました。この違いは朝晩の私の生活を100％向上してくれました。The Height of Cabinets: The cabinet on the left in the picture below is mine, and the one the right, showing just the dolomitic marble as a waterfall, is Banchan’s. My height is only 4’11”, but Banchan is 6’1″. So, I requested the cabinet height to be about 6 inches lower than his. This change made my life 100% better everyday.

この他キャビネット内も便利な作りになってますが、以上の点に比べたら瑣末でしょう。We made more improvements inside the cabinets but they are trivial compared to the other improvements I already mentioned above. So, this is it.

ただ、この全面に広がる景色はやっぱり最高です。外の景色を中に取り込むというアイディア、まさに成功です。Just that, the view spreading out like this is fantastic. My idea, to bring in the outside view, worked so well.

沈むケーキ？ Sunken Cake?

出来上がりがレシピの写真と全然違うんですけど。「ドイツ風リンゴが沈むケーキ」と訳しておきます。German Sunken Apple Cake. The result looks far from the recipe picture.

上に載せていたリンゴは焼いている間に全部沈んでしまいました。という事は名前の通りになったという事で良いのかな。The apple pieces I placed on top of the cake butter sunk down while baking it. It means that my result really shows the name of the cake.

ふんわりとろけるリンゴが入ったケーキ、美味でした。The sunken apples are so soft and melt in your mouth. Uh-huh, yum!

暗かったシャワー室 The Shower Room Was Dark

改装の理由1、電気をつけても暗かったし、外の景色が見えなかった。それに尽きます。 One of two reasons for us to do the bathroom remodeling was that the shower room was so dark. We couldn’t see any outside view either.

しかも物を置く棚が一つだけ。It had only one shelf in it as well.

改装後、視界が開けて電気をつけなくても明るくなった。After the remodeling, it became so bright even without turning on the lights. The view is fantastic.

棚も3つに増えた。満足！ We have three shelves now. I am so satisfied with it.
