Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park

グランドジャンクションから 80 km ほど南東にブラックキャニオン国立公園があります。ここでは、ペグマタイトの岩脈を見ることができました。Black Canyon of The Gunnison National Park is approximately 50 miles southwest of Grand Junction. We could see pegmatite dikes there.

ペグマタイトは火成岩の一種です。岩石の分類はちょっと複雑でわかりにくいので、時間がある時に整理しますが、ここでは、この公園でみられる岩が地下深くで固まったことについて、私流に、短く説明します。Pegmatite is an igneous rock. Here is a simple description of pegmatite dikes. (I will write about the rock classification when I have time, because it’s a little complicated.)

地下からマグマが押し出されると、地表まで出てくる場合もあれば、地下深くで止まってしまう場合もあります。火山から出てくるのが一つのタイプで、ペグマタイトのように地下深くでストップしてしまったものがもう一つのタイプです。地下深くで止まったマグマは冷えにくく、固まる速度が非常に遅くなります。その結果、同じ鉱物が手を繋いで結晶を作る手助けをすることになり、より大きな結晶ができやすくなります。Igneous rocks are categorized into two types, depending on where magma stops during the activity. One type is formed when magma is expelled from a volcano. Another type, pegmatite, is formed when the magma stays deep in the ground. In this case, the cooling process is very slow. This allows larger crystals of each type of mineral within the magma to form.

岩脈は、このペグマタイトのように地層の間にマグマがジワジワと進入して固まったものです。ここでは、暗い片麻岩（変成岩の一種）に比べて、明るい色のペグマタイトが線状に走っているのが見えます。Dikes are one of the classifications that shows how magma intrudes into rocks. The picture above shows lines of light color pegmatite dikes against darker color metamorphic rocks.

黒く見えるガニソン川が渓谷の底を流れているのが見えます。The dark color Gunnison river is running at the bottom of the Black Canyon.

15億年以上前、地球の中、地殻のあたりで行われたマグマ活動の話です。そんな太古の出来事を垣間見ることができるのも、ガニソン川の威力のなせる技なんですね。川の力は偉大です。This is a story of what magma was doing more than 1.5 billion years ago deep in the Earth’s crust. Wow! And the powerful Gunnison river made it possible to show the great canyon wall to us by carving the rocks.

コロラド国定公園 – Colorado National Monument

グランドジャンクションの町のすぐ近くに、コロラド国定公園があります。この公園の見所はモニュメント渓谷でしょう。
Colorado National Monument is right outside of Grand Junction. The highlight of the park is Monument Valley.

ここは、世界4大自転車レースのコースになったことで、一躍有名になったそうです。確かに世界級のプロじゃないとリムロックドライブの坂は登れそうにないですね。
The park became well known especially after being selected as a stage of one of the major bicycle races in the world. Indeed, the slope of Rim Rock Drive is so steep that only world class cyclers can survive through it.

冬の公園は雪化粧して、とても綺麗です。反面、ハイキングコースが閉鎖されていることが多く、あまり散策ができません。この公園でも歩くことができなかったので、ビッグホーンに期待しました。「絶対に会える」と、友人が確約してくれたからです。
In general, any park in winter with snow is so pretty. On the other hand, most often you can’t hike much due to trail closures. Unfortunately we couldn’t hike in this park either. So we hoped to see Bighorn Sheep even more. My friend said, “I guarantee that you will see Bighorn Sheep today.”

「確約」とは大袈裟な。でも、夕暮れ、あきらめかけていた時に、見つけた！
Who could “guarantee” such thing? Around sunset, I was so close to giving up, but then we found them!

零下の気温の中、次の春までガンバレ！Even under below freezing temperatures, you guys are so tough. Live well until the next Spring!

道の名前 – Street Names

グランドジャンクションというコロラドの町。私たちの宿は F と 1/2 ロードにありました。
Our hotel was on F and 1/2 road in Grand Junction.

シンプルを超して面白い。ハリーポッターの「9 と 3/4 番線」プラットフォームを思い出してしまいました。
It’s a very simple naming system, but quite weird! It reminded me of “Platform 9 and 3/4” in the Harry Potter story.

「9 と 3/4番」を探す時間もなかったんですが、もし、探していたら、あったかもしれません。
We didn’t have time to search for “9 and 3/4”, but if we did, we might have found it.

コロラドへ向かう – Heading East to Colorado

クリスマスはコロラド南部で過ごすことにした私達。
We decided to go to Colorado for Christmas.

ただ、道中のユタ州には素晴らしい場所が満載なので、なかなかたどり着けない。例えば、サンラファエルリーフ。
There are so many beautiful places in Utah on the way to Colorado, however, so we had to stop by some and ended up taking extra time to get to the first hotel. San Rafael Reef is one of the places.

コロラド高原上に隆起してできた崖と谷。ここを通り抜けて行きました。 – San Rafael Reef has been eroded into tall fin cliffs and deep canyons on the Colorado plateau. We drove through it.
馴染み深い地層。Familiar formations lined up there.

もう、日没も近いというのに立ち寄った、アーチーズ国立公園。
Arches National Park is another place we couldn’t resist going to, even though it was close to sunset.

遠くにラサル山脈が見えます。 – La Sal Mountains are visible in the background.

さあ、先を急がなければと思っているのにコロラド川沿いの裏道を走ると、こんな景色。
We really needed to hurry by the time we left Arches, but we decided to take a scenic drive along the Colorado River. It was, after all, heading to our hotel in its own meandering way.

これじゃあ、先に進めない。まあ、ホテルに近づいていることは確かなんで、時間を気にするのは諦めました。
Ugh, it’s so pretty. I gave up worrying about the time.

賀正 – Happy New Year

Daruma doll is a wishing doll. When you wish, paint one eye in black, and work hard on the goal. Once you achieve the goal, paint the other eye.

何はともあれ、新しい年を迎えられた事に感謝しましょう。
At any rate, I am grateful that we could have a new year.

デンドライト – Dendrite

デンドライトは樹脂状の結晶で、寒い冬に窓にできた霜の結晶もこのグループに入ります。この写真のデンドライトは石の上にできた結晶です。
Dendrite is a crystal that develops with a typical multi-branching tree-like form. Snowflake formation and frost patterns on a window are also a part of this group. The picture below is Dendrite formed on a rock.

専門家が顕微鏡で観察しないとわかりませんが、マンガンや鉄など、10種類ぐらいの鉱物が結晶を作りやすいということです。
According to the study, about 10 different minerals like manganese, iron, etc. form dendrites. Of course, we need a microscope to identify them.

ハイキンググループの人に教えてもらうまで気にもかけなかったデンドライト。一番小さいくてバックパックで運べるサイズ の石を持ち帰り、ロックコレクションの最後の位置に納めました。まだ綺麗な結晶になっていませんが、これから時間をかけて変化していくんでしょうか。
I didn’t notice dendrites at all until people from my hiking group pointed it out. I brought the tiniest rock back home, and placed it at the last spot in my rock garden. It doesn’t have pretty crystal forms yet, but I am hopeful that it will form slowly.

冬がくる前に – Right Before Winter

もう夜は零下ですが、日中はまだ暖かい。
It’s below freezing temperature at night already but we could still feel the warmth of the sun during the day.

鳥たちは、既に寒い冬に備えてフワフワの羽を、更にフワフワにしています。
Birds are fluffed up like fuzz balls right before cold cold winter.

今年の初め、春を迎える時に出会ったアメリカツリスガラはどこにいるんでしょうか。
I wonder where the Verdin I met last Spring is now.

こちらは、冬を迎える前のアメリカツリスガラ。
This is a verdin just before Winter.

夕暮れ、丘に登ったら、マウンテンバイクの若者が半袖、ショートパンツで楽しんでいました。
I went up a hill near sunset. A young man with short pants and shirts was enjoying mountain bike ride.

遠くの山には微かに雪が積もっているっていうのに、若者は元気だな〜！
Wow, we have snow already on the mountains in the background. It’s nice to see young energy.

金太郎飴みたい – Like a Kintaro Candy

雪だるまのクッキーを作ってみました。I baked Snowman cookies .

袋に入れてみたら、金太郎飴を連想させてくれました。I put them in a bag, and it reminded me of Kintaro candies ( It’s a stick of hard candy that has a picture of the face of Kintaro, ‘Golden Boy,’ a legendary figure in Japanese folklore, in the middle of it. The candy is made in such a way that the face will appear at any point where it is cut.)

物理学によると、自分とは金太郎飴という時間の流れを途中で切断した時に見える顔みたいなものらしい。According to Physics, oneself is not static, but flows through time. Oneself at any point in time is like a Kintaro candy’s face when cut.

ハリー バルトイア　- Harry Bertoia

彼のサインがエンボスされた絵葉書二枚。和紙にインクで描かれた絵とブロンズの箱。 – Two postcards with embosed signature. One is a picture with Ink on rice paper. The other is bronze cube.

ハリー ベルトイアは彫刻、版画、宝石デザイン、また、家具のデザインなどで有名な方です。先日、その財団法人のオフィス兼画廊を訪れました。
Harry Bertoia was an artist with many roles such as sculptor, print maker, jewelry designer, furniture designer, etc. I visited his gallery/foundation office the other day.

訪れた理由は、ハリーの作品の写真が載っている絵葉書を「Thank you」カードと共に封筒に入れるという仕事をする為です。上の写真はいただいて来た2枚のカードです。法人の設立者であり、ハリーのお嬢様であるセリアさんの説明によると、寄付していただいた方々に毎月1枚づつ、12ヶ月かけて感謝の気持ちを込めて贈るんだそうです。
The reason for the visit was to do volunteer work there. The task was simple; inserting a card with a reproduction of one of Harry’s art pieces together with a thank you card into an envelope. The picture above is of two cards that I brought back home. Celia, who is the founder of the foundation, told me that she will send a different card every month for twelve months to donors and contributors.

セリアさん、そして彼女の音楽家の友人と3人で作業をしながらいろいろなお話をしたわけですが、時折、宝石のような言葉やアイディアがポロリ、ポロリと光ります。全く別の世界を垣間見たようでした。
Celia, her musician friend, and I exchanged our life experiences and thoughts while we did the task. It was one of the most memorable day that I want to treasure for a long time. Their world was so different from mine, and I was mesmerized with their words and ideas as if they were shining jewels.

彼女の大切なプロジェクトの一つは、ハリーの作品を鑑定することです。無数の作品を残して逝かれたハリーですが、彼の作品には一切サインが入っていません。何故なら「作品は偉大なる力からの授かり物」という信念を持っていたので、頑固にサインする事を拒否したんですね。本物を掘り起こすこと、偽物を排除してカタログを作る事は、困難に近いけれど大切な作業なんですね。
As a curator, one of Celia’s important projects is to appraise an art work as being a true creation by Harry, because he didn’t imprint his signature on any pieces. Many years have passed since his death, and as the value of pieces go up, it’s even more important to identify the true works and compile the Catalogue raisonné.

ご縁あって過ごした数時間、私の時間をボランティアとして差し上げた代わりに、数倍もの価値ある時間をいただきました。
I was so lucky to meet her as a volunteer. I offered a few hours of my time for her foundation, and I received something many times more valuable than what I put in.

キツツキ – Woodpecker

ジョンソン キャニオンのトレイルから川道に降りて、コットンウッドの林の中に入って行った。
We went down to a wash from the Johnson Canyon Trail, and went into Cottonwood trees.

コンコンコン… Knock, knock…

耳を澄まして、目を凝らすと、いた！ I listened carefully and looked through leaves. Then I found you!

「忙しそうですね。」 “It seems you are busy.”

「オガクズが顔にかかってますよ。」 “You have sawdust from the tree on your face.”

「もう冬がすぐそこまで来てるからね。」 “Winter is already so close.”

直産チーズ – Local Cheese

正に敷地内で生産されているヨーグルトやチーズ。Hildale のフェニーファーム のお店に立ち寄りました。
We stopped by at the Finney Farm shop in Hildale, Utah. They produce yogurt and cheese right on their property.

人が5人ぐらい入ったら満員で動けないくらいの小さなお店がポツンと建っています。
A tiny building was right along the road. It’s so tiny that only five people max can go inside the shop.

一生懸命生産してくれるうちたちの写真が壁に貼ってあって、感謝の気持ちが膨らみます。
You find photos of their cows with name tags on the wall. It made me so thankful to them for the fresh products and personal service.

私たちはチェリーヨーグルトとチーズ数種類を購入して帰って来ました。ここ特有のクリッカーチーズはアシアゴチーズのようで美味しい！
We bought a container of cherry yogurt, and several packages of cheese. Kricker cheese is their own type of cheese which tastes like Asiago cheese. Umm, so good.

トゥールーリー、サリー、エイミー（牛たちの名前）、ありがとう!!!
Thank you… Truly, Sally, and Amy (cow’s names)!!!

しし座流星群 – Leonid Meteor Shower

曇り空、何故か南東方向。月もボヤッと見えただけで、しし座流星群、何も見えませんでした。
I couldn’t see the Leonid Meteor Shower. For some reason, I was looking towards the South East sky full of clouds. I only could see the hazy moon.

夜空を見ながらジッとしていたら、自分が動いているんだと気づいてしまいました。いえ、私が発見したわけではなく、もちろん、アインシュタインが「相対性理論」ですでにお話しされてます。ただ、地球上でジッとしていても、秒速 1280 km もの超スピードで宇宙を動いているっていう事実、すごくないですか？
While I was looking at the night sky, I realized that I was moving even though my body was completely still. Of course, I didn’t come up with such a great notion myself. Einstein already wrote about it in his papers on “Relativity.” It’s an awe inspiring feeling that we move 800 miles per second while doing nothing.
