時々訪れる近くの野球公園は、暑い夏の早朝散歩には絶好な場所です。 The nearby baseball park, which we visit from time to time, is the perfect place for an early morning walk on a hot summer’s day.

ある日の早朝散歩、残念ながら私は一緒に出掛けられませんでした。バンちゃんとメイプルだけで訪れた公園で衝撃的な事件が起きました。 One early morning during a walk—unfortunately, I wasn’t able to go with them—a shocking incident occurred in the park, which Ban-chan and Maple had visited one day on their own.

バンちゃんが他の犬の飼い主と話し込んでいる時、メイプルは何を思ったのか、突然、鳥を追いかけ公園内の池に勢いよく飛び込みました。まだプールに一度も入ったことがないメイプルがです。 While Ban-chan was deep in conversation with another dog’s owner, Maple—for some reason—suddenly chased a bird and plunged headfirst into the pond in the park. And Maple had never even been in a swimming pool before.

池の中で野生のアヒルがくつろいでいたところに、子犬が突然飛び込んでいったわけです。前代未聞、野球公園の歴史上初の出来事でした。　A puppy suddenly jumped into the pond just as some wild ducks were relaxing there. It was an unprecedented event—the first of its kind in the collective knowledge of the dog walkers of the baseball park.

メイプルは、なぜ、突然こんなに野生化してしまったのか？まだ12ポンドしかない7か月の子犬なんですよ。　Why on earth has Maple suddenly become so wild? She’s only a seven-month-old puppy weighing just 12 pounds.

実は、その前日にも衝撃的な事件が起こっていました。　In fact, a shocking incident had taken place the day before.

裏庭でのことです。庭の手入れをしている時に、何かが2mぐらい目の前を高速で横切って行きました。その後を追ってメイプルが高速で横切って行きました。ほんの一瞬のことでしたが、その後メイプルが何かを咥えて戻ってきました。そのまま私を通り過ぎてどこかに逃げていってしまったので追いかけていきました。　It happened in the backyard garden. While I was tending to the garden, something darted past me at high speed, about 2 meters away. Maple suddenly gave chase and dashed past me at high speed. It was all over in the blink of an eye, but afterwards Maple came back with something in her mouth. She ran straight past me and off somewhere, so I suddenly gave chase in turn.

私が目撃できたのは、散乱した鳥の羽と、鳥の足だけでした。でも、彼女が何をしたのか明らかでした。 All I could see were scattered bird feathers and a bird’s foot. But it was clear what she had done.

メイプルが池に飛び込んだのも鳥を追いかけ、捕食したかったからに違いありません。 There is no doubt that Maple jumped into the pond because she was chasing a bird and wanted to catch it.

メイプルを引き取り、育て始めてからの5か月間を振り返ってみると、「そういえば。。。」と思い当たる節があります。まだ生後5か月の時にはすでに野生としての洗礼を受けていたのかもしれないと思える事件がありました。 Looking back on the five months since I took Maple in and started looking after her, there are moments when I find myself thinking, ‘Come to think of it…’. There was an incident that made me wonder whether she might have already had her baptism of wildness by the time she was just five months old.

今年の5月-6月ごろ、裏庭に産み落とされたウズラの卵。すでに孵化していなくなっていましたが、雛達はまだ裏庭を走り回っていました。　Around May–June this year, some quail eggs were laid in the backyard garden. Although they had already hatched and the chicks were no longer there, they were still running about in the garden.

そして、ある日、メイプルはその中の1羽を咥えていました。　Then, one day, Maple was holding one of them in her mouth.

メイプルの野生本能は、やはりプードルとゴールデンリトリーバーの血を受け継いでいるからなんでしょう。 Maple’s wild instincts are probably down to the fact that she’s inherited the bloodlines of a poodle and a golden retriever.

ところで、ウズラが産卵のために選んだ場所は、こちらのキョウチクトウでした。小さく剪定してもらっていました。でも、ウズラが再び卵を産みつけないように、一本の幹を残して全て切ってしまいました。Incidentally, the Quail chose this Oleander as the spot to lay its eggs. It had already been pruned back to a small size. However, to prevent the Quail from laying eggs there again, I cut it all back, leaving just a single stem.

来年はどうぞ、隣の空き地を選んでもらえますように。 I do hope they’ll choose the vacant lot on the other side of the wall next year.
