前回の書き込みから時間が経ってしまいました。色々な事がありすぎて、何から書こうか迷います。とりあえず、アメリカオオコノハズクをご紹介します。 It has been some time since my last post. There were so many things going on that I am not sure where to start. For now, let me introduce you to the Screech Owl.
3日間の野鳥の会の毎年恒例のフェスティバルが終わりました。この写真は、初日の夜撮りました。夜9時から真夜中まで3時間、忍耐強く暗闇を歩き回った価値がありました。 The Bird Fest by Red Cliffs Audubon club just ended, and I took these pictures on the first day out of three days. We walked around for three hours from 9 pm till midnight patiently. It was well worth it because I could see the Screech Owl.
ネズミのおご馳走、お食事の邪魔にならないよう、この写真が撮れた後、帰ってきました。 We left there soon after we took these pictures as we thought we should leave him alone for his dinner.
1時過ぎに家に帰ってきてとても疲れていましたが、同時に興奮していました。何しろ、この種のフクロウを見るのは初めてだったし、しかも獲物付きですから。We came back home after 1am, so I was very tired. But at the same time, I was very excited to see this kind of owl for the first time and the result of his hunt.
朝5時半に家を出て、夜7時半に帰宅。ザイオン国立公園の東、パラヌウィープのルートのないルートを一周して帰ってくるハイクは17km、670mの標高差、所要時間10時間のハイキングでした。 We left home at 5:30 am, and returned home at 7:30 pm. This hike, in the east side of Zion National Park, is a total of 10.5 miles, 2,300 feet elevation gain, and 10 hours of hiking.

多分、私のハイキング歴の中でも一番苦しいハイクだったかもしれません。 It was probably the hardest hike of my hiking history.
ただ、息を呑む絶景だったことは確かです。 However, the views were breathtaking.
このハイクが予想以上に苦しいものになった大きな理由は、二つ。一つ目は、雪がまだ残っていたことと。 There were two main reasons why this hike turned out to be more difficult than expected. The first was that there was still snow on the ground.
二つ目は、雨の日が続いていたので、岩の至る所から水が流れてきていた事、ひいては普段はない乾いた川に水が流れていた事でしょう。 Second, it had been raining, so water was flowing out from the rocks, and by extension, usually dry washes, were flowing rivers.
橋のない川を渡るという洗礼を受け、クイックサンドに飲み込まれないように歩いていきました。ここでかなり神経をすり減らしてしまいました。下の写真の彼は膝の上まであっという間に沈んでしまいました。 We had the baptism of crossing a river with no bridge, and walked through the wash trying to avoid being swallowed by quicksand. I lost a lot of nerve here. The person in the photo below sank quickly above his knees.
ザイオン公園内はイースターバケーションでものすごく混んでいましたが、私たちのハイクは道のないルートなので、勿論、車を降りてから帰ってくるまで、私たち以外誰も見かけませんでした。 It was extremely crowded in Zion because of Easter Vacation, but our hike was on a trail-less route, so of course we saw no one but us from the time we got out of the car until we returned.
登りはお互いの足に捕まったり、お尻を押し上げてもらったりして急な岩場を登りました。 We climbed the steep rocky terrain using each other’s legs to hold onto and sometimes getting a helping hand to push our butts up.
降りは、お尻をズリズリと滑らせました。On the descent, we often slid down on our butts.
水が岩の隙間から流れ出していて、岩肌が滑りやすくなり、実際、仲間の一人が滑って転んでしまいました。その際、肩を脱臼してしまい、途中で下山し、病院に担ぎ込まれました。 Water was flowing out of the crevices of the rocks, making the rock face slippery. And in fact, one of our group members slipped and fell. In doing so, she dislocated her shoulder and was taken down the mountain to the hospital by a couple of our hikers.
雪投げをして楽しそうなハイクリーダーの隣で、私は小さな雪だるまを作ってあげました。 While our hike leader was having fun throwing snowballs, I made a little snowman for myself.
パルヌウィープの高原は1850mぐらいです。だから、それほど高いわけではないです。それでも頂上で生きる植物の生存のための努力は大変なものだろうと思われます。 The top of Parunuweap is about 6,200 feet. So it is not that high. Even so, survival for the plants plants living on the summit must be very hard.
下の写真には、左にウェストテンプル、右にイーストテンプルと、両方のテンプルが収まっています。 In the photo below, both temples fit together, with the West Temple on the left and the East Temple on the right.
崖の上から下を見下ろすと、バージン川が細くウネウネと流れていました。 Looking down from the top of the cliff, I saw the Virgin River flowing in what looked like a thin stream. far below.
頂上に溜まっていた水。これから暑くなると一気になくなってしまいます。 Water that had accumulated in a pool at the top, will disappear once it gets hot.
さあ、十分に頂上でくつろいだので、（とはいえ、大抵10分以内ですが）これから下の写真の下白い頭のフーデューの森を超えて下っていきます。 Now that we’ve had enough of relaxing at the top (though usually less than 10 minutes), we will now descend beyond the lower white-headed hoodoo forest in the photo below.
どこまで行っても自然が作り出したフォームは美しい。 Wherever you go here, the forms created by nature are beautiful.
私たちは謙虚な気持ちでそんな美しさの中を歩かせてもらいました。 We were humbled to walk in such beauty.
何回か携帯を落とし、一度は15mぐらい下に転がってしまい、もうダメかと思いましたがなんとか事でした。ただ、この写真を最後に、バッテリー切れとなりました。 I dropped my phone several times and once it rolled down about 50 feet and I thought it was done for. My cell phone was somehow safe, but after this picture, the battery ran out.
最後に、ザイオンのモキボールについて書きます。大きいです。家の近くのモキボールはこのぐらいです。Lastly, I would like to write about Zion’s Moqui Balls. They are big. The moqui balls near my house are about this big.
でも、ザイオンの茂木ボールは、こんなに大きい。 But Zion’s Moqui Balls are so much bigger.
私の顔と同じぐらいの大きさ。ザイオンの自然はデッカイ！ About the same size as my face. Nature in Zion is huge!
夏用に一昨日花を植えたばかりなのに、今日、また雪でした。 It snowed again today. I had just planted flowers the day before yesterday for the summer.
移動できる花は屋根のあるところに動かしましたが、動かせないものは、仕方がありません。無事を願うのみです。 I moved the flowers that could be moved to a place under the roof. But those that could not be moved, I had no choice, I can only hope that they will be safe.
この雪ですが、ツブツブのアラレ雪、結構早く解けます。向こう10日間の天気予報は晴れか曇りで、気温は上がっていくらしい。 This snow was a mix of hail and snow. It melts quickly though. The weather forecast for the next 10 days is sunny or cloudy, and the temperature is supposed to rise.
なんとまあ、冬の締めくくりというところでしょうか。さあ、これからは快晴で行こうね！ What a way to end the winter! Now, let’s go with clear skies from now on!
昨日は快晴だったのに、今日は再び雲が空を覆い、強風が吹いていて、寒いです。 Yesterday was clear, but today the sky is once again covered with clouds, strong winds are blowing, and it is cold!
でも、すでに、確かに春です。 But, indeed, I know it’s already spring.
先週、雪がパラつく中、ハヤブサを見に出かけました。肉眼では絶対に見えないけれど、大きな声で泣いていた方角に望遠レンズを向けると、いました。かろうじてそれらしき姿を収める事ができました。遠い、遠い崖の上です。 Last week, we went to see a falcon although there were snow flurries in the air. We couldn’t see them with the naked eyes, but when I pointed my telephoto lens in the direction where they were crying loudly, there they were. I was barely able to capture what appeared to be a falcon. It was far, far away on the cliff.
このキツツキ、日本語名はわかりません。2羽、忙しく古い木を突いてました。 Two Ladder-backed Woodpeckers were busily pecking at an old tree.
こちらわお馴染み、スクラブジェイです。寒そうですね。 Here is a familiar face, a Scrub Jay. It looks cold.

でも、昨日は良い天気。リスが日向ぼっこをしに出てきました。 But yesterday was a beautifully sunny day. A squirrel came out to enjoy the sun.
こちら、スクラブジェイさんは地面をゴソゴソと掘り返して、何かを探しているようです。 Here, Mr. Scrub Jay is rummaging around in the ground, looking for something.
「すみません、何を探してるんですか？」 “Excuse me, what are you looking for?”
「もう4月だというのに何にも準備できてなくて忙しいんだ。」 “It’s April already, but I haven’t done anything yet, so I am so busy.”
「何の準備をしているの？」 “What are you getting ready for?”
「決まってるでしょ。産卵のための巣作りだよ！」 “Don’t you think it’s obvious? It’s nest material to lay our eggs!”
それを聞いて私たちも慌てて植木屋さんに駆け込んで、新しい花や木を買ってきました。鳥や蝶々や蜂たちが喜びそうなものばかりです。 Hearing this, we also rushed to the nursery, and bought new flowers and trees. I have chosen plants that birds, butterflies and bees would love.
中でも、以下の木は今年初めて試してみる直物です。ロイヤルレッド バタフライブッシュと言います。 このウェブサイトに花の写真があります。 Among them, the following tree is the first trial this year. See the pictures on this website.（https://www.monrovia.com/royal-red-butterfly-bush.html）私の背丈より高く成長するそうです。 They say it will grow taller than I am.
まだ小さくて花が咲いていないので、成長するまで前にマリーゴールドを植えて見ました。 As it’s still small and not yet flowering, I planted marigolds in front of it.
中庭の門脇に収まりました。 It fits by the gate of the courtyard.
それにしても、ブルブルブル、今日はまた寒い日に戻ってしまいました。日本で言う三寒四温のような現象なんでしょうか？ In any case, gosh! it’s so cold. It went back to a cold day today. Is this a phenomenon like the “3 days cold and 4 days warm” in Japan?
昨日の午後、久しぶりの日差しが嬉しくて、スノーキャニオン州立公園に出かけました。 Being so happy to see sunshine after a long time, we went to Snow Canyon State Park yesterday afternoon.
2kg以上ある重いレンズを2本担いで8.3km歩いたので少々疲れましたが、疲れを吹き飛ばすほど嬉しい事がありました。 I was a little tired after walking 8.3 km carrying two heavy lenses weighing more than 2 kg, but there was something that made me so happy that it blew away my fatigue.
その理由は、ムナジロミソサザイに出会えたからです。 The reason for this is that I was able to see Canyon Wrens.
コロラド川沿いのリーズフェリーを訪れた時、一羽を発見して追いかけましたが、雨が降ってきて、いい質の写真が撮れませんでした。 When I visited Lees Ferry along the Colorado River, I spotted one and chased it, but it started raining and I was unable to get a good quality photo.
可愛いでしょ？目下、一番好きな鳥です。 Aren’t they cute? They are my favorite birds at the moment.
でも、翼を広げても17.5cmぐらい、14グラムしかない小さな鳥で、見つけるのは至難の業です。 But it is a small bird, measuring only about 7 inches with its wings spread, and weighing only 0.5oz. It is extremely difficult to spot.
ただ、そんなに小さい鳥なのに、鳴き声はとても大きくて、渓谷に響き渡ります。その鳴き声を頼りに、声の方に歩いて行き、飛んで来そうな岩壁を見つめてじっと待ちました。But for such a small bird, its cry is very loud and echoed through the canyon. We walked toward the voice with the call as our guide and waited patiently, staring at the rock wall where it was about to fly to.
ひとしきり美しく鳴いた後、更に高い岩壁の方に飛び去って行きました。 After beautiful singing and chirping, they flew away toward the higher rock walls.
aomi3 now
