T シャツプロジェクト – T-Shirt Project

去年からずーっと考えていたんですが、なかなか行動に移せませんでした。でも、今日は風が強くて寒いし、バンちゃんもいない事だしということで、Tシャツキルトのプロジェクト開始となりました。 I’ve been thinking about this project since last year, but couldn’t get started for some reason. It is such a windy day, however, and Banchan is not home, so I decided to get started the T-shirt quilt project.

カリフォルニアから引っ越してくる前にずいぶん処分しましたが、思い出が深くて捨てきれなかった物もありました。特にガラパゴス諸島で買ってきたブルーフットブービーとは別れ難い。Many shirts went to donation even before we moved out from California, but I couldn’t let go of some of the shirts like my Blue-footed booby shirt from the Galapagos Islands.

でも、箪笥の中が限界です。一気にシャキシャキ。But now my drawers are fully packed again and I have to say good-bye to some more of them.

切ったシャツをちょっと並べてアイディア探し。So first, I laid out all the pieces and brainstormed. 

だんだん完成図が見えて来ました。Yes, yes, it’s coming. The image that I am looking for is clearer now.

えーっと、サイズを揃えるところが難しそう。でも、もう一度並べ替えてできそうな事がわかったので、今日はここまで。Hmmm, it could be difficult to make all pieces the same size. I sorted and laid them out again. There, it looks so much better. This is it. Well-done for the day.  

次はアイロンをかけて、サイズを揃えて裁断していきます。完成目標は年内です。定年退職してからやる事いっぱいですからね。ゆるゆる進みます。（笑）The next step should be ironing, then cutting pieces again to fit into my plan. The target completion is the end of the year. I am a busy retired woman. I go slow. hahaha

白頭が帰ってきた – The White Heads Are Back Again

白頭ワシが今年ももう帰ってるって聞いたから、１８号線を北上して行った。そしたら道路脇にいた。

We’ve heard that Bald Eagles are back here already. So we went on Hwy 18 up north. And there he was on the side of the road.

わー、やっぱり大きな鳥は存在感があって、見ているだけで興奮しちゃいますね。

Large birds like Bald Eagles have a strong presence and make me excited.

近づこうとするとすぐに飛び立っていってしまうので、なかなか近くで見られなけど、白い頭は遠くからでも見つけやすい。They fly away if we try to go closer than their comfortable distance. So we can not see them from close distance, but it’s easy to find them because of their white heads.

場所争いかな？やっぱりカラスが白頭ワシを追い出そうとしてる。どの動物の世界もみんな大変ね。Could it be a territorial fight? Crows always attack other birds. Well, I guess it’s all the same for birds, other animals, and even for humans, too. We all work hard to survive everyday.

ともあれ、今年もまた出会えてよかった。In any case, I am glad to see you again this year!

初めてのマラソン – My First Marathon

驚かせました？笑 Did you think I am a runner?

マラソンの応援に行ったのが初めてだったんです。友人が参加していたので。 It was my first time to see a marathon. My friend was running in it.

ちょい、出遅れて、すでにスタートしてしまった後なので、1時間ほど、ブラブラしてました。今日は特別な日でもなかったと思いますが、熱気球が三つほどゆっくりと空を流れていました。When I got there, the race had started already. So I spent about an hour wondering around while waiting. I believe it wasn’t any special day, but three hot air balloons were already in the sky moving slowly towards landing places.

上の私の写真を見ると、気球のバックグラウンドはパインバレー山脈ですが、その手前はなんと私がボランティアで陸亀のために低木を植えてあげた所です。うわ、懐かしい。The picture above shows a balloon with the Pine-valley mountains in the background. In front of the mountains is where I volunteered to plant local plants for tortoises. A nice memory came back to me.

こちらは近くの学校に無事着陸した気球です。左に二人の男性が一生懸命ロープを引っ張っているのが見えます。One of the balloons had landed nearby on a school yard already. Can you see the two men pulling a rope on the lower left-side in the picture above?

なるほど、こうして畳むのねなどと、感心しながらそんな光景を見ていると、1 時間はすぐすぎてしまい、フロントランナーがやって来ました。Admiring the way balloon people worked, I learned how to handle the balloon. Time passed by quickly, and soon the first runners were here.

この大会では、フルマラソン（42.2Km）、ハーフマラソン（21.2Km）、5K、子供マラソンとかあるらしいです。警備の人に彼らも友人が参加しているハーフマラソンのグループだと教えてもらいました。This race offers full, half, 5K, and kids marathon. My friend signed up for the half marathon and these guys were also on the half marathon race according to the guards.

私の友人は彼らから30分後ぐらいにやって来ました。20Km ぐらいの地点。疲れてるようには見えません。毎朝走っているからですね。I found my friend a half hour behind the leaders at about the 12.5 miles point. She didn’t look tired at all. I thought it’s the power of her running every morning.

少し刺激されて帰って来ましたが、多分、マラソンには参加しないでしょう。I was excit from the race but I don’t think I will join the marathon.

幻日 – Sun Dog

大気光学現象の一つ、幻日。初めて見ました。Sun dog is an atmospheric optical phenomenon. I saw it for the first time on the way home from a hike.

そんな言葉があることさえも知りませんでした。先日のハイキングからの帰り道、バンちゃんが説明してくれました。なるほどーと聞きながら、この世の中には私の知らない事だらけだ。99.99%以上の事象は私の知らない所で起こっているけど、それでも生きていけるって、なんだか不思議だなーと思ったのでした。I didn’t know such a term existed, but Banchan explained it to us. By listening to his explanation, I understood it in general but my thought drifted away from it and come to a realization that I know nearly nothing about what’s happening in this world. And even though there are more than 99.99% of things that I don’t know about, yet I have no problem being able to live. I thought it’s a very strange notion.

ドラセナトウモロコシ – Corn Plant

30年近く一緒に住んでいる観葉植物の私のドラちゃんに花が咲いた。Dora-chan, my Corn plant (aka Dracaena fragrans) who has lived with me for nearly 30 years bloomed for the first time.

水を上げなかったために、2回も死にかけた経験のあるドラちゃんに初めての花。ビックリして、ちょっと怖かった。花が咲くなんて、聞いたことなかったから。It nearly died twice because I didn’t water it for too long, but it survived and now has bloomed for the first time. I was so surprised, and scared, to see it. I never knew that corn plants bloom.

一週間してもそれほど変化なく、枯れてきたようなので、花の茎を切り落としてあげた。The flowers didn’t changed much in the past week, but just dried a little. So I cut the entire flower stem.

クリスタルみたいに光るボール状の塊、樹液かな。 I saw shining sap like Crystal balls here and there.

ドラちゃんの花、再び見ることができるのでしょうかねぇ。また30年ぐらい待つのでしょうか。I wonder if I could see Dora-chan’s flowers again in the future. Do I need to wait another 30 years to see them?
