復活 Revival

写真ワークショップの予定地の地図です。　Here is a map of the proposed sites for the photo workshop.

地図上、右下のカルガリーから出発し、北上してNordeggで2泊しました。その後、私たちが病のため皆と別れてRed Deer という街で治癒中、他の人たちはJasperへと向かい素晴らしい写真を撮っていました。😢　We started in Calgary, bottom right on the map, and headed north to Nordegg where we stayed for 2 nights. Then while we were recovering from the flu in a town called Red Deer, others were heading to Jasper to take some great photos. 😢

もちろん、私たちだってカナディアンロッキーの冬景色を諦めるわけには行きません。皆がLake Louise に行く時に合わせて合流することにしました。復活だ！ Of course, we were not about to give up the winter scenery of the Canadian Rockies. We decided to meet up with the others when they got to Lake Louise. It’s time to come back!

すでにワークショップの半分以上が消化されていました。それでも、野生の馬やワタリガラスに出会ったりして、私たちができる限りの時間を楽しんでいたと思います。 More than half of the workshop had passed already. Still, I think we enjoyed our time as much as we could, meeting wild horses and ravens.

皆と合流した翌朝、夜明け前、フェアマウントホテルの目の前に広がる湖とその後ろの山を撮る予定でした。 The morning after we met up with everyone, just before dawn, we planned to take pictures of the lake in front of the Fairmont Hotel and the mountains behind it.

あいにく全く天候が悪く、朝日を受けた山肌はみえませんでした。 Unfortunately, the weather was not good at all, and we could barely see the mountain’s surface in the morning sun.

夕暮れ、今度は河原から Castle Mountain を撮影することにしました。下の写真、右に見えているのが私の三脚です。 At dusk, we decided to photograph Castle Mountain from the riverbank. In the photo below, you can see my tripod on the right.

そこから撮ったショットがこちら。　Here is the shot taken from there.

岩壁にうっすらと光があたってますが、光は届いてくれませんでした。　There is a faint light on the rock wall, but the light did not reach us.

とりわけ風景写真の撮影は、どうしても一人の世界に入ってしまうように思えます。でも、みんなと別行動をとっていたわたしたちには、他の写真家たちとの会話が新鮮で、楽しいものとなりました。　Especially when shooting landscapes, it seems that we are always in our own world. However, for us who had been separated from everyone else, it was refreshing and enjoyable to talk with other photographers.

列車を延々と待ち続けた朝でした。でも、天候も悪いし、列車も来なかったので諦めました。　It was a morning of endless waiting for the train. But the weather was bad and the train never came, so we gave up.

翌日、もう一度同じ場所に行き、河原まで降りて行った時の写真。私だけなら絶対に降りていかなかったと思います。　The next day, we went to the same spot again and I took this picture when I went down to the riverbank. If I were alone, I would never have gone down there.

そして、河原から１5分ぐらいかけて上まで登り終えた時に、奇跡が起きました。待ち続けていた列車が突然来たんです！　Then, when I had finished climbing to the top, which took about 15 minutes from the riverbank, a miracle happened. The train we had been waiting for suddenly came!

皆と狂喜しました。　We were all overjoyed.

天候には恵まれませんでしたが、楽しい写真家たちと共に過ごしたカナディアンロッキーは良い思い出になっていくことでしょう。Although the weather was not ideal, the Canadian Rockies with a group of fun photographers will be a great memory of mine.

最後に、Banff に移動中の時の景色。　Finally, here is a view of Banff while we were on the way there.

全然珍しい動物ではないエルクでしたが、鼻の上が雪で白くなっていたのを見てうれしくなりました。　Although the Elk is not a rare animal at all, I was happy to see that the tip of its nose was white with snow.

全世界で46種、カラス、ワタリガラスについて書きます。 This post is about 46 species worldwide, crows and ravens.

以下、冬のブライスキャニオン国立公園、ミゾレ混じりの雨の中、じっと耐え忍んでいるワタリガラスを撮りました。私の写真コレクション中、たった一枚のワタリガラスの写真です。 Below is a photo of a raven patiently enduring the rain mixed with sleet in Bryce Canyon National Park in the winter. It is the only photo of a raven in my collection.

すでに多くの学者がカラスの驚異的な頭脳レベルを報告しているので、ここでは少しだけ書きます。チンパンジーと同じぐらい、人間の子供の7歳児ぐらいの知能を持っていると言われています。ちなみに、オウムも知能の高い鳥とされていますが、カラスにはかないません。　Many scholars have already reported the amazing brain level of crows, so I will write a few words here. They are said to be as intelligent as a chimpanzee and as intelligent as a 7-year-old human child. Incidentally, the parrot is also considered an intelligent bird, but it is not as intelligent as the crow.

とりわけカレドニアガラスを使った知能テストは有名です。彼らは細い筒の中にいる虫を捕まえるために、自分で細い道具を作ってしまい、捕獲に成功しました。（日本語のこのページに詳しく紹介されています。） In particular, the Caledonian crow is famous for its intelligence tests. They made their own thin tool to catch insects in a thin tube and succeeded in capturing them. (You can read more about it on this page in English.)

その他、人間の顔の認識もできるし、鏡に写っている自分も認識できます。また、目的達成のために我慢することもできるんですよ。大人になりきれない人間より賢い！！！ In addition, they can recognize human faces as well as their own faces in a mirror. They can also persevere to achieve their goals. It seems that they are smarter than some humans who can’t grow up!

賢いが故に、少し怖いですよね。体もタカと同じぐらいの大きさなので、威圧感があります。その上に、タカとは違って雑食なので、食べ物のある所では辛抱強く居座ってゲットするまで賢く立ち振る舞う。 Because they are so smart, they are a little scary. Their bodies are about the same size as hawks, so they are intimidating. On top of that, unlike hawks, they are omnivores, so they will patiently stay where there is food and be persistent until they get it.

こういう視点から、私の持つカラスのイメージは悪いです。 Because of their persistence, my feeling about them is not that good.

でも、この知能の高さがわかった今、今後はうまく共存する方法を模索できないのかなーとも思います。例えば、カカシを置く代わりに、逆に学習させて農作業に参加してもらうとか。　 But now that we know how intelligent they are, I wonder if we can’t find a way to coexist with them well in the future. For example, instead of placing scarecrows, we could let them learn and participate in farming with farmers.

馬鹿げたアイディアでしょうか？　Is it a silly idea?

タカとワタリガラス – Hawk and Raven

美しい空の下、アカオノスリが木に止まっていました。- A red-tailed hawk was perched on a tree under a beautiful sky.

よく見かける鳥ですが、好きです。- I like them even though I see them often.

今日はついています。アメリカチョウゲンボウに出会いました。- I was so lucky today.  I could meet an American Kestrel.

かつてはタカの種類と思われていたので、別の名前がついていました。でも、立派なハヤブサの仲間です。- Once upon a time, it went by a different name and was thought to be a type of hawk.  But it’s actually in the Falcon family.

嘆きバトと同じぐらいの大きさですが、仕草から、もっと大きい鳥のように感じます。- The size is only about that of a mourning dove, but by the way it acts it makes me feel that it’s a larger bird.

さて、本題。- Now let me get into the main subject.

突然、ワタリガラスがやってきて、アカケアシノスリに喧嘩をふっかけてきました。- Suddenly, a raven came over and started attacking a Ferruginous hawk.

彼らは天敵なんでしょうか？テリトリー問題でしょうか？ – Are they natural enemies?  Or, was it a territorial issue?

アカケアシノスリよりほんの少し小さめですが、ワタリガラスはかなり攻撃的です。一時期は2羽でアカオノスリに攻撃していました。空中でも生存競争は厳しそうですね。- Ravens are a tiny bit smaller than Ferruginous hawks but quite aggressive.  I once saw two ravens team up and attack a red-tailed hawk.  It’s a tough survival competition even in the sky.

 

ブラックホール

「黒い物を探してるんだけど、あまり思いつかないんだー。」
「当然だよ。この世の中には、本当に黒い物体はたった一つを除いて何もないんだから。」

「わっ、たった一つ？それって何？」
「ブラックホールだよ。全ての物体はごくわずかでも光を反射するから知覚できるでしょ？黒の定義は100％光を反射しないことだからね。」

「ブラックホールって、物なの？現象が起こる場所だと思ってた。」
「ブラックホールは巨大な星が引力によってギューっと凝縮してできるんだ。凝縮し尽くせなくなる状態は引力が半端じゃなくて、光さえ吸い込んでしまうほど強くなるんだよ。」

「ふーん、それって、星のライフサイクルの終わり？それとも始め？」
「終わりに起こる。」

「じゃあ、宇宙にはたくさんブラックホールがあるの？地球もいつかはそうなるの？」
「何千億もあるよ。でも地球はならない。」

「なぜ？どうしてそう言えるの？」
「ブラックホールになるためには巨大な星じゃないとダメなんだ。巨大な引力が必要だからね。太陽だって赤色巨星ぐらいにしかなれない。」

「じゃあ、どのぐらい大きかったらブラックホールになれるの？一体どの辺にいるの？」
「太陽の十倍ぐらいないとダメだよ。ブラックホールには2つの種類があって、小さいステラーは太陽の4ー10倍あるとされてる。巨大なものはこの銀河系の中心にもあるけど、何億倍もあるとされている。たいていの銀河の中心には巨大ブラックホールがあると言われてるよ。」

「ふーん、ところで、ブラックホールって、丸いの？宇宙でフワフワ動き回ってるの？」
「宇宙の中のものだから丸くて動き回ってる。」

・・・と永遠に続く質問ぜめ。

ブラックホールに吸い込まれそうなところを、バンちゃんは必死にもがいて2階に逃げて行ってしまいました。
