タンポポの悪夢 Dandelion Nightmare

夢の中、タンポポの英語名の語源がわからなくて苦しんでいました。　I was struggling in my dream to understand the origin of the English name of the dandelion.

日本語名は、花が咲き終わった後の綿球の姿が「タンポ」という綿を丸めて作る一種の画材に似ているところから来ているという説があります。ま、フワフワと優しい感じが名前とマッチしているので、すごく納得できます。　The Japanese name “tampopo” is said to come from the appearance of the blowballs after the flowers have finished blooming, which resemble a kind of drawing material made by rolling up cotton called “tampo”. Well, the fluffy and gentle feeling matches the name, so it makes a lot of sense to me.

ところが、英語名のダンディライオンはまったく納得がいきません。言葉の響きは「ダンディなライオン」を想像させ、花とマッチしません。　On the other hand, the English name Dandelion is not satisfactory at all. The sound of the word conjures up images of a “dandy lion,” which does not match the flower.

だから、夢の中で「なぜ？」と色々な人に聞き回っていました。何回説明してもらっても理解できず、その苛立ちに叫びそうになったところで目が覚めました。　So, in my dream, “Why?” I was asking around to various people. No matter how many times they explained it to me I could not understand, and I woke up just as I was about to scream in frustration.

早速その悪夢をバンちゃんに話したら、その場で名前の由来を検索してくれました。　I immediately told Ban-chan about the nightmare and he searched for the origin of the name on the spot.

よみながら笑ってしまいました。なぜなら、日本語の由来が花を基にしているのに対して、英語／フランス語の由来は「花」ではなく、「葉」を基にしているからです。 I laughed as I read it. Because while the Japanese origin is based on flowers, the English/French origin is based on “leaves”, not “flowers”.

「葉の形がライオンの牙の形に似ている。」 “The shape of the leaves resembles the shape of a lion’s fangs.”

目の付け所が違ったんですね。この意外さに嬉しくなってしまいました。悪夢に感謝しましょうかね。また、これで思い出した花がありました。 The way Japanese and Europe looked at it was different. I was pleasantly surprised by this unexpectedness. I guess I should thank my nightmares. Also, this reminded me of another flower.

カケスについて About Jay

私の鳥の分類も、よく見かける鳥の領域に入ってきました。今日はカケスについて書きます。 Now my classification of birds has entered the realm of commonly seen birds. Today I write about Jays.

カケスはカラス科に属する鳥で、環境にうまく適応して全世界に広がっていきました。　Jays belongs to the crow family and has spread throughout the world by adapting well to its environment.

雑食だからでしょうか。カラスのように逞しく賢いです。　Is it because they are omnivores? They are tough and smart like crows.

旧世界のカケスと新世界のカケスでは見かけがずいぶん違う様です。私は新世界のカケスの中でも数種しか見たことがありませんが、ほとんどが青い色をしています。一方、旧世界のカケスはカラフルな色をしている種が多いので、機会があったらぜひ、見てみたいものです。　The Old World and New World jays look very different. I have only seen a few species of New World jays, and most of them are blue in color. On the other hand, many Old World jays are colorful. I would like to see them if I have the chance.

英語名の ”Jay” は鳴き声が「ジェージェー」という鳴き声なので、その鳴き声が由来とされています。 It is said that the English name “Jay” is derived from its call, since its cry is a “jay-jay” cry.

一方、日本語名の「カケス」は、漢字で表記すると「懸巣」と書きます。巣を作る際に木の枝と枝との間に無数の小枝枝を懸けて、お椀のような巣を作ります。この巣作りが元になって「カケス」と呼ばれる様になったということです。 On the other hand, the Japanese name “Kakesu” is written in Kanji characters 「懸巣」meaning as “suspend nest.” When they build their nests, they hang numerous twigs between tree branches to create a bowl-like nest. The name “Jay” is derived from this nest-building process.

ラテン語（学名）では Garrulus glandarius と表記されます。arrulus が「おしゃべり」、 glandarius は「ドングリ(の好きな)」を意味するそうです。この名前はカケスの食べ物から名付けられたんですね。　In Latin (scientific name) it is spelled Garrulus glandarius, where ”Garrulus ” means “talkative” and “glandarius” means “acorn (lover of).” So the Latin name is named after the Jay’s food.

面白い。他の言語でのカケスの名前の由来を調べたらもっと面白い発見があるのでしょうかね？ Interesting… Could we find more interesting discoveries if we look into the origin of the name of the jay in other languages?

地殻変動 Cedar Breaks National Monument

最初に、 National Monument の日本語訳について。いつも悩みます。いろなところから収集した資料をまず、まとめておきます。

その定義に当てはまる言葉が日本語にはないことがそもそもの問題なんですね。

  • National Park:  こちらは国立公園で問題ないでしょう。国の管理のもと、傑出した自然公園として指定されている。
  • National Monument:  国の指定というより、大統領が一人で指定することができるところが一番の違いで、国の予算で管理されているところは同じです。保護されるものの数の多さと予算も違うらしい。天然自然物、国定記念物みたいな訳語になるんでしょうか。
  • State Park:  都道府県が管理している見地から国定公園に近いのかな？

ということで、Cedar Breaks 国定記念物。

地質学についてほとんど知識のない私にも、とても面白かったレンジャーの説明に、「そうだったのね〜！」と感心したことが3 点ありました。

  1. Cedar Breaks という名前の由来。
  2. 近くにあるHoo Doo の奇岩がたくさんある Brice Canyon 国立公園との違い。
  3. Brice Canyon 国立公園の名前は間違っている！

今日は話が長くなるので、一番目について書きます。

地球の歴史60億年に比べると、かなり若いですが、ようやく火山や地殻変動がひと段落した頃、9千万年ちょい前からスタートです。ということは、恐竜たちの繁栄の終わりの頃。

この地帯はコロラド高原の最西端に位置します。Zion, Canyonland, Grand Canyon などがある同じ高原です。そして、この辺は海岸沿いの一等地だったんですね。波が寄せては引いて繰り返し、あらゆる所から運ばれてきた堆積物が化石をたくさん含みながら茶色い地層になっていったとパンフレットには書かれています。

そして、ここには Hurriane Fault （ハリケーン断層）が走っていて、1千万年ぐらいかけて地震を繰り返し、高原の西側、今の Cidar City 、は低くなり（5,800 フィート、1,767m) 、その反対側、Cidar Breaks 近辺はぐんぐん盛り上がり、10,350 フィート (3,155m）まで上昇しました。

ようやく春が来たよとロビン君。

つまり、断層によってCedar 地帯が2分割されてしまったから、Break （割れるという意味）という言葉が名前の一部になったんですね。そ〜か〜。納得！

補足です。荒地のことを昔はよくBreaks と言っていたからとも言われています。でも、断層による分割があったからという説明の方がグッと理解できちゃいますよね。

ここは山ではなく高原ですが、高さのイメージを掴むために日本の山と比べると、日本の二番目の山、北岳よりちょっと高いところにある高原ということになります。どおりで寒いわけです。つい先週まで雪が降っていたので入れませんでした。また、ハイキングコースはまだ通行止めとなっています。多分、7月ごろから解禁されるとのことです。富士山の山開きと同じですね。

Chipping Sparrow が捕まえた獲物を見せてくれました。

ちなみに、私の住んでいる所、St George は海抜 2,860 フィート、872m です。支笏、洞爺地方の天狗岳と同じなんだ。こちらの日本の山一覧（高さじゅん）サイトを見ながら、ふむふむ、そっかー。

高い山トップ10のうち、3つしか登ってなかったのね。もう登る機会もないかなと思うとちょっと残念です。
