ホワイトドーム自然保護区のトレイル、7.7kmを一人で歩いてきました。I went to hike the trails, 4.9 miles total, in White Dome Nature Preserve alone the other day.

世界中、どこを探してもここにしか生息していない植物の花が開花する時期だったからです。 I wanted to see the flowers which bloom only in this one area of the whole world.

日本語にはない花なので、当然日本語名はありません。It doesn’t have a Japanese name because it doesn’t grow in Japan, needless to say.

Dwarf Bear PoppyもしくはDwarf Bear Claw Poppy と呼ばれています。直訳は特殊なクマの爪を持つケシの花というところでしょうか。 It’s called Dwarf Bear Poppy or Dwarf Bear Claw Poppy.

モエンコピ地層の石膏質のある場所、しかも降水量も少ない厳しい環境に咲く花です。たくさん咲いているわけでもないです。It grows in gypsum rich soils of the Moenkopi formation. On top of that, the precipitation is very low here. As you can see in the picture below, not many plants want to live here.

道の近くにようやく見つけました。近寄ってみると、可憐な白い花です。I finally found it near the trail. It was a lovely white flower.

この花のどこがクマの爪なのかさっぱりわかりません。でも、根元の方を観察してみると、うひゃー、驚きました。 I didn’t understand at all why people call this flower as bear claw. But I was astonished when I bent down to ground level. There, I found leaves with claws coming out of the lower section, closer to the root.

しっかりと長い爪がついていました。こうして自分を守っている姿に感動しました。Look at those claws! The flower sure knows how to protect herself.
