ジョンデンバーのトリビュートコンサートに行って来ました。ここで言うトリビュートとは敬意を表して行われるコンサートのことです。 I went to the John Denver tribute concert. A tribute in this context is a concert held in honor of.
Chris Collins という方がジョンデンバーそっくりな姿で登場していたので、昔を懐かしく思い出してしまいました。実は、ジョンのコンサートには日本で2回、カリフォルニアのUCバークレーで一回行っています。彼の熱烈なファンではないですが、いくつかの彼の作る歌には共感します。 A person named Chris Collins appeared as a John Denver look-alike, which made me remember the old days fondly. Actually, I have been to John’s concerts twice in Japan and once at UC Berkeley in California. I am not an ardent fan of his, but I can relate to many of the songs he wrote.

会場全体で大合唱です。特に「太陽を背に受けて」の歌を歌いながら、「そうなんだよね。こんな風に心に響く写真が撮りたかったんだよね。」と、思い出しました。彼の歌は写真を撮り始めた頃のことを思い出させてくれました。 The entire audience sang along in chorus. Especially while singing the song “Sunshine on my shoulders,” I remembered something important to me. “That’s right. I want to take pictures that touch my heart like this.” I was reminded of the time when I first started taking pictures with his song in mind.
毎週土曜日に開かれる野外マーケットに再び参加しました。前回のように売り上げゼロではなかったです。以下が売れた品です。 I once again participated in the open-air market held every Saturday. I did not have zero sales like last time. Below are the items sold.
4枚セットのコースターが3個。 Three sets of four coasters.
1枚のコースターを2枚。 Two one-piece coasters.
鍋つかみを3個。 Three pot holders.
値段を下げまくったので、鍋つかみは6ドルの赤字となり、カードリーダーの手数料なども差し引くと、合計で10ドルの収入となりました。ただ、出店する参加料金が20ドルで、（バンちゃんと二人で2ヶ所借りているので60ドル。それを彼の方が多くの場所をとっているので私は20ドルにしてもらってます。）その出費も加えると、この日の収入はマイナス10ドルとなりました。 Since I lowered the price so much, I lost $6 for the pot holders, and after deducting the card reader fee, etc., I made a total of $10. However, the entry fee to open a booth was $20. (Banchan and I rented two spaces for $60. He is using more than half of the total space, so we agreed that I pay $20.) After adding that expense, my income for the day was minus $10.
もっと売れる事を期待して、値段を下げられる最低限まで下げたのに、この結果となりました。 I lowered the price to the minimum I could afford in hopes of selling more, but this was the result.
ここは野外コンサートがある会場の駐車場です。だから将来の歌手の卵も練習のためにやって来て、ガンガン歌いまくってます。 The market is held in the parking lot of a venue where outdoor concerts are held. So future singers come here to practice and sing their hearts out.
バンちゃんはすでにEtsyに彼の商品を出しています。私はやはりウェブサイトを立ち上げたいです。その為には時間と労力が必要なので、できるまで、市場調査の意味も含めて諦めずに売る練習をします。。 Banchan already has his products on Etsy. I still want to set up a website. This requires time and effort, so until I can do it, I will continue to practice selling without giving up, to at least do market research!
さて、私の10Kのレースの日も近づいています。コースにはすでに当日は道路閉鎖のサインが出ていました。ちょっと元気ないですが、これから走ってきます。 Well, the day of my 10K race is approaching. There were already signs on the course saying that the road was closed for the day. I’m a bit down, but I’m going to run now.
今日、走りましたが、8kmぐらい走ってばてました。ただ、リクガメ君が道路を横断している所に居合わせて、嬉しくなりました。車に轢かれないように、しばらく見守っっていました。 Today, I ran, but I was pretty tired so I stopped running after about 8 km. However, I was happy to see a tortoise crossing the road. We waited a while for it to cross the road to make sure it was not run over by a car.
さて明日、また土曜日のマーケットにお店出します。 Well, tomorrow I will be back to set up our booth at the Saturday market.
新しいアイテムも加えたり、お値段もまた更に検討したりしていたら、1週間があっという間に経ってしまいました。まだ準備することは山ほどあるんですが、焦らずに行きます。 A week has flown by as I was adding new items and further examining prices again. There are still so many things to do, but I decided that I am not in a hurry.

先週の土曜日のマーケットに出店を出しましたが、売り上げゼロでした。2回目ということもあり、それなりに準備したつもりでしたが、予想外の結果となりました。 We participated at last Saturday’s market but made zero sales. This was the second time, and I thought I had prepared accordingly, but the result was unexpected.
8×8インチ、5×5インチ、そして3.75インチのコースターの3種類の大きさの写真を取り揃えました。 Three sizes of photos are available: 8×8″, 5×5″, and 3.75″ coasters.
納得できず、参加されていた5人の写真家さん全てに、売り上げを聞いてまわりました。驚くことに、5人の方全員が私と同じように何も売れなかったという回答でした。 Unsure how to interpret it, I went around to all five participating photographers and asked them about their sales. To my surprise, all five responded that they had sold nothing, just as I had.
バンちゃんと二つのテントをシェアしてます。私の作品は主に右のテーブル二つ。 I share two tents with Banchan. My works are mainly the two tables on the right.
波があるから、気にせず次週に期待すればいいだけだと励まされました。競争相手ではあるけれど、なんとなく苦しい時を一緒に乗り越えていく同志のような親近感が生まれてきて、嬉しくなってしまいました。 They encouraged me saying that it comes in waves, so I should just not worry about it and hope for the next week. Although we are competitors, I somehow began to feel a sense of closeness with them, as if we were comrades who were going through a difficult time together, which made me happy.
この出店ビジネスは出費ばかり嵩んでまだ軌道に乗っていないんですが、まあ、いい人たちといい環境に恵まれて、結構楽しいです。きっとそのうちにうまくいく事を信じます。 This business is still not on track due to all the expenses, but I am blessed with good people and a good environment, and I am having a lot of fun. I am sure it will work out in time.
人生初の売る側としてのマーケット参加でした。 It was the first time in my life that I have been a vendor in a market.
早朝、まだテントも張られていない会場です。 It is early in the morning, and the tents have not yet been set up at the venue.
野外劇場の駐車場が開場です。 The parking lot of the outdoor theater is open.
初めてだったので、「まずは参加してみる」というのが目的でした。 Since it was my first time, my goal was to join first and see how it goes.
それでも、コースターセットが10個ぐらい売れるだろうと期待していました。 Still, I expected to sell about 10 coaster sets.
ところが、現実は厳しい。 The reality, however, was harsh.
4時間お店を開いていて、たった3個しか売れませんでした。 I had the store open for four hours and sold only three coaster sets.
まず、値段が高すぎたことが大きな原因かと思います。＄10下げた途端に3個立て続けに売れたからです。 I think the main reason was that the price was too high. As soon as I lowered the price by $10, I quickly sold 3 sets.
でも、売れなかった理由はその他にもたくさんあります。テントの後ろの面にカバーを貼って、駐車場のバックグラウンドから切り離すべきでした。写真があること自体、気づかない人が大半でしたから。 But there are many other possible reasons why they didn’t sell. I should have put a cover on the back side of the canopy to separate it from the background of the parking lot. Most people didn’t even realize the larger pictures were there.
また、テーブル一つという簡素なお店だったので、もっと派手な呼び込みサインが通路に必要でした。 Also, my booth was simple, with only one table set far back, so more signs are needed further forward to bring people in.
レイバーデーという休日が終わったばかりとあって、お客様の量も少なかったかな。 I think the number of customers was low because the Labor Day holiday had just ended.
こういうことにはど素人の私ですから、準備をしている時から学習することばかりでした。でも、実際にお客様一人一人と接して物を売るということは、また別の次元で奥が深いです。 I am an amateur at this sort of thing, so I had a lot to learn from the very beginning of my preparation. But actually interacting with each customer and selling something is a whole different level.
お店を出しているすべての方々の努力が少し理解できました。現実はそんなに簡単ではない。2週間後、また頑張ってみます。 I now understand a little more about the effort of all the people who are setting up a store. The reality is not so easy. I will try again in two weeks.
この1ヶ月、忙しくしていました。気がつけばもう9月。 I have been busy this past month. Before I knew it, it was already September.
私が目標にしていた9月2日を翌日に迎え、苦しんでいました。なぜなら9月2日から自分の製品を近くの野外マーケットで売り出すと決めていたにもかかわらず、雷を伴う激しい嵐と豪雨が来ていたからです。窓にはカエルがペタリと張り付いていました。I was suffering with September 2 coming the next day, because I had set my target day to begin selling stuff at the local Saturday market on September 2. But then severe thunderstorms and torrential rains were coming. A frog was flopping on the window.
翌朝は7時前に家を出て、会場に行く予定でした。初めての小さなお店です。その為にこの１ヶ月間、様々な準備をしてきたんですよねー。でも、雨のため、断念しました。On the morning of September 2, I planned to leave home before 7 am to go to the market. It was the first time I was going to open my booth there. I worked very hard over the past month to get ready. But I had to give up because of the rain.
ま、こんなこともあるものです。さっさと気を取り直して次の土曜日に目標を絞ります。 Well, such things happen. I’ll quickly get back on track and focus on my goals for next Saturday.
こちらが私の商品です。リビングにお店を広げてみました。 Here are my products. I spread out my store in our living room.
メタルプリントを5枚用意しました。その他は4枚セットのコースターです。誰かにそのままプレゼントできるようにラッピングもしてあります。 I made five metal prints. The others are various sets of 4 coasters each.
私の過去15年間ほどの野生動物の写真が中心です。嬉しいことに、お店を出す前に、すでに1セット売れました。ボブキャットのコースターです。 They are mostly wildlife photos from my past 15 years or so. Encouragingly, I already sold one set before I opened the store. That was a set of Bobcat coasters.
年内に出資額を取り戻すのが目標です。目標は高い方がいいのだ。 My goal is to regain the initial investment by the end of the year. The higher the goal, the better.
一年前からバンちゃんがすでにアートショーをスタートさせていたので、私もきっとできると思えるようになりました。彼の勇気に感謝です。 Since Ban-chan had already started attending art festivals a year ago, it made me feel that I could do it too. I am grateful for his courage.
大雨のおかげで、昨夜、今まで見たことのない訪問客がありました。 Thanks to the heavy rain, we had a visit last night from a brand new type of animal.
16cm もある大きなウシガエルです。 This is a large American bullfrog, measuring 6.5 inches in length.
今朝、家の回りを探してみましたが、見つかりませんでした。久しぶりにいい天気の今日、サッサとどこかの池に帰って行ったのでしょう。 We looked around the house this morning, but could not find it. It was the first nice day in a long time, and it must have gone back to a pond somewhere in a hurry.
嵐のおかげで、また雨漏りがありました。ご近所では木が倒れたり、家の中まで浸水したりとたくさんの被害が報告されています。でも、嵐の後、光を浴びて輝く草木を見ると勇気が湧いてきます。 Thanks to the storm, we had another leak. Oh dear! Many of our neighbors have reported lots of damages, with trees falling over and flooding into their houses. But after the storm, seeing the grass and trees shining in the light gives me courage.
きっと、大丈夫。次の土曜日、きっとうまくいくよ！ I’ll be fine. Next Saturday, it will be fine!
2cmぐらいの小さなヒキガエルです。多分、まだ陸に上がってきたばかりです。 It is a small toad, about 1 inch. It has probably just come ashore.
去年の8月に撮ったものです。ヒキガエル自体はいい写真なのですが、斜めに交差している枝がどうしても気に入りませんでした。そこで久しぶりにフォトショップを使って枝を取り除いてみました。 I took this picture last August. The toad itself is a nice photo, but I just didn’t like the diagonal crossing branch. So I removed the branches using Photoshop for the first time in a while.
夜空の写真を専門に撮る写真家さんとは違うので、私たちは基本のカメラ設定で、ブライアンヘッドでの2回目の夜空の写真を試してみました。 Not being photographers who specialize in night sky photography, we used our basic camera settings to attempt our second night sky photo at Brian Head.
ISO 8000, f/10, 1/20 sec.
基本のカメラ設定は4つあります。 There are four basic camera settings for night sky photography.
一つ目は、シャッタースピードをマニュアル操作できる「バルブ(BULB)モード」にすること。そうすることで、暗い夜空を4秒から10秒ぐらいまで自分で時間を数えて調整できます。 The first is to set the shutter speed to BULB mode, which can be manually controlled. By doing so, you can count and adjust the time from 4 to 10 seconds in the dark night sky.
二つ目、F値は状況に合わせて、どれだけの深海度が欲しいのかで調整します。星だけだったら、絞りを目一杯開けておくといいと思います。 Second, the F value should be adjusted according to the situation and how much depth of field you want. If it’s just stars, you should leave the aperture as wide open as you can.
三つ目、ISO設定は大切です。当然ISOの数値が低いほど写真の質が良くなります。でも、夜空はとても暗いので、許せる限り数値を上げないと、シャッタースピードが1分以上必要になるかもしれません。三脚にカメラを設置して、シャッターリリースのケーブルをつけていれば手ブレはありません。だからシャッタースピードが1分でも10分でも良さそうです。でも、カメラが設置してある地球は動いています。だから10秒もカメラの目を開放していると、すべての星が点でなく、線になって撮れてしまいます。そこで、スピードはせいぜい10秒以内に収めたいわけです。 Third, the ISO setting is important. Naturally, the lower the ISO number, the better the quality of the photo. But the night sky is so dark that you may need more than a minute of shutter speed if you don’t raise the ISO number as high as you can allow. If the camera is on a tripod and the shutter release cable is attached, there will be no camera shake. So a shutter speed of 1 minute or even 10 minutes looks good. But the earth on which the camera is mounted is moving. So if you keep the camera’s eye open for 10 seconds, all the stars will be captured as lines, not dots. So you want to keep the speed within 10 seconds at most.
これでカメラの設定が90％できました。 Now the camera is 90% set up.
四つめ、暗くなったら、最後の設定をします。オートフォーカスをマニュアルに切り替えて、輝き始めた星、または月にカメラを向けてピントを合わせます。「はるか彼方の星なんだから無限大にしておけばいいジャン？」と、昔は思っていました。でも、違います。ほとんどのレンズの無限大設定は正確ではなく、「無限大」より遠くはフォーカスできないらしいです。だから自分でじっくりと焦点を合わせなければいけません。 Fourth, when it gets dark, make the final setting. Switch the autofocus to manual, point the camera at the star or the moon as it begins to shine and focus. I used to think, “Since it’s a star so far away, why not just set it to infinity?” But that’s wrong. That’s because most lenses infinity marker is not accurate and can be focused beyond infinity. So focus carefully.

さて、これで完了です。空がどんどん暗くなるのを待つのみです。 Well, that’s it. We just have to wait for the sky to get darker and darker.
私にとって、夏の夜空はわかりやすいです。天の川が南から北に流れているからです。南端にはさそり座がいます。バンちゃんの上に見えます。（右下の赤くぼやけているのが彼です。）わかりやすくペンで線を引きました。 For me, the summer night sky is easy to understand. This is because the Milky Way flows from south to north. At the southern end is the constellation Scorpius. You can see it above Banchan (the red smudge at the bottom of the photo). I drew a line with a pen for clarity.

空気が綺麗で邪魔な光がない場所では、星がたくさんありすぎて星座の判別が逆に難しくなります。また、それをカメラで捉えると、ますますわかりにくくなります。 In a place where the air is clean and free of obtrusive light, the sky is full of many stars scattered everywhere, making it conversely difficult to discern the constellations. The camera makes this even worse.
例えば、こちら、北に近い東の空に見える天の川です。ここには私の好きなはくちょう座が天の川の上を気持ちよく飛んでいますが、見えますか？判別できる人は、結構星座に詳しい人です。 For example, here is the Milky Way visible in the eastern sky near the north. Here, my favorite constellation Cygnus is flying comfortably above the Milky Way, can you see it? If you can identify it, you are quite familiar with constellations.

ここには夏の大三角形と呼ばれる一等星があるので、それが見つかれば、はくちょう座がどこかわかります。以下、同じ写真に線を引きました。 There is a first-magnitude star here called the Summer Triangle, so if you can find it, you know where Cygnus is. Below is a line drawn on the same photo.
三角形の左下がはくちょう座の尻尾です。翼を大きくひろげ、首を長くして南方に飛んでいく美しい鳥の姿が見えますか？ The lower left of the triangle is the tail of Cygnus. Can you see the beautiful bird flying south with its wings spread wide and a graceful, long neck?
森が捻じられているわけではなく、そこに生息する木が捻られているので「ねじられたもり（ツイステッド フォーレスト）」と名付けられました。 It was named “Twisted Forest” not because the forest is twisted, but because the trees that inhabit it are twisted.
ここはブライアンヘッドからそれほど遠くない場所ですが、行くには不便な場所です。オフロードの道をうねうねと走り、駐車場から1時間ほど歩くと荒れた丘になり、そこに捻られた木が、ブリスタルコーン パインが生息しています。 It was not far from Brian Head, but it was an inconvenient place to get to. A meandering off-road drive and an hour’s walk from the parking lot leads to a badlands hill where twisted trees live, home of the bristlecone pine trees.
以下、雌と雄の写真です。 Below are photos of a female cone and a male cone.
ブリスタルコーン パインで有名な場所はなんといってもカリフォルニア州のホワイトマウンテンです。標高4300ｍの山ですが、その中腹、3,000ｍ付近にこの木のグローブがあり、そこには世界最古の木がまだ生息しています。5,000年近く生きているそうです。私たちもそこを訪れました。その時にはまだ1年ぐらいしか経っていない紫色をしたコーンを見ました。2年ぐらい経つと茶色になるそうです。 The most famous place for bristlecone pines is, of all places, the White Mountains in California. The highest peak is over 14,000 feet-high, but in the middle of the mountain, around 11,000 feet above sea level, there is a grove of these trees, where the oldest tree in the world still lives, around 5,000 years old. When we visited there, we saw purple cones that were only about a year old at the time; they say they turn brown after about two years.
ここ、ツイステッドフォーレストには以前にも訪れていますが、日暮れから夜にかけての訪問は初めでです。 We have been to Twisted Forest before, but this is my first time visiting from dusk to night.
南と北の方向を確認し、私はこの木の近くに三脚を設置しました。そして、日が沈むのを待ちました。 Having identified the direction of south and north, I set up my tripod near this tree. Then I waited for the sun to set.
下の写真の中央に星が見えます。小さすぎてわからないかもしれませんが、西の方角の一番星が出てきました。カメラの焦点を合わせるには格好の星でした。 You can see the star in the center of the picture below. It may be too small to make out, but it was the first star to appear in the west. It was a good star to focus the camera on.
まだまだ明るすぎてよく見えませんが、とりあえず北の空に見える北斗七星を撮りました。 It was still too bright to see clearly, but I took a picture of the Big Dipper in the northern sky anyway.
南の空には、微かに天の川が見えてきました。バンちゃんが邪魔でしたが、赤いヘッドライトを当てて、写真の一部にしてみました。 The Milky Way was faintly visible in the southern sky. Banchan was in the way, but I shined my red headlights on him and made him a part of the picture.
南の空、天の川の右横にはさそり座が見えます。これも私の5本の指に入る確認できる星座の一つです。 In the southern sky, to the right of the Milky Way, you can see the constellation Scorpius. This is another one of my five recognizable constellations.
この夜は、もう少し暗くなるのを待っていたかったんですが、何しろ真っ暗な帰り道なので程々にして帰りました。 This evening, we wanted to wait for it to get a little darker, but it was pitch-dark on the way home, after all, so we left.
先日、レッドクリフ ギャラリー（ユタ州南部のアート協会）でコンテストの発表会がありました。 We went to a reception and award ceremony held by Southern Utah Art Guild at Red Cliff Gallery the other day.
テーマは「光を捉える」でした。 The theme was “Capturing the Light”.
なぜ私たちがその会場にいたかというと、バンちゃんもコンテストに参加していたからです。We were there because Banchan entered his pictures for the photography category.
発表の前、作品を見て回りながら、特に目を引くものが何点かありました。We walked through the gallery to see other artists’ pieces before the announcement. A few pieces caught my eyes especially.
この方の作品はテキスタイル部門で優勝しています。キルトですが、全体的に完成していて、ダントツに素晴らしく、優勝してもおかしくない作品でした。 This piece was awarded the 1st place in the textile category. I must say it is fully integrated as an art work, and no room for any question, it was the winner.
また、賞は貰わなかったものの、私が気に入った水彩画が以下です。 同じような構図で写真を撮っている私としては、彼女の光を扱う水彩画技術に感心しました。 The water color painting below didn’t receive any prize, but I liked it. It was because I took a picture with similar composition. I was quite moved by the light handling in the picture with water color.
こちらは、写真部門で優勝した方の写真です。私が唯一バンちゃんの競争相手になる作品だと思った写真、2枚です。分かりにくいですが、優勝したのは右の写真、冬のイエローストーン、バッファローに光が差している所。 I thought the only competitor to Banchan was the person who took the pictures below. The top two pieces were one notch up from other photographic prints. And indeed, the picture on the top-right was awarded 1st place in photography. It’s at Yellowstone National Park in winter. Light came through the clouds and striking the bison on a stormy day (my imagination).
その他の写真はそれほど目を引くものではなく、上の写真には勝てなくても、きっとバンちゃんは入賞できると思っていました。 Other photographic prints weren’t as good. So I thought Banchan had a good chance to win either 2nd or 3rd.
そして、初参加、写真部門で３位に入賞しました。パチパチパチ！ And he did. His picture was awarded 3rd place in photography for the first time entry. Yeah!!!
ゴールドキャニオンはアリゾナ州のフィネックスの南東に位置します。そこで開かれたアートフェスに行ってきました。 Gold Canyon is located southeast of Phoenix, Arizona. We went there to attend an art festival.
上の写真の背景の赤い帽子とショールはそこで購入しました。ウールからフェルトを作り、それを形のある物にして売っていらっしゃいました。フェルトを作る段階ではすでに最終の構想が決まっているので、色つけやデザインがとてもユニークでした。 The background of picture above shows a hat and a scarf. I bought them from there. The lady who sold them explained the process of making them. From the raw wool, she makes felt and adds color using die. At that time, she already has an idea of the final form. The color and design are so unique and pretty. I loved them all.
さて、私たちの目的は買うことではなく、売ることです。バンちゃんは去年、初めてローカルのアートショーに参加して、彼の写真を5枚も売ることができました。そこで、他のショーに参加希望を出したら、ここに参加できることになったわけです。 Now, back to the main topic, our purpose of visiting there was not to buy goods but to sell goods. Banchan sold 5 pieces of his metal printed photographs last year at the local art show. So he looked for more art shows that he could apply for. He applied to a few and this place accepted his art work. Others are coming later.
ただ、遠いので、写真だけではなく、テントと衝立、椅子、スーツケースなどを運ぶのは結構大変な作業です。前回は私の車にも物を積み込んで行ったり来たりできました。でも、今回はそうはいきません。 The only thing is that it’s quite far away. Carrying all his pictures as well as the canopy, partition walls, chairs to sit, our luggage, etc. requires a big effort. We used his car as well as my car to carry all the stuff just to the last nearby art festival. But this time, we had to carry it all in one car. I didn’t want to drive there in a separate car.
でも、絶対に無理と思えるようなことでも、なせば、本当に何とかなるものですね。全部積み込んで、8時間の行程、一台で出発しました。 And the result was that we packed all of our stuff in one car and drove out for the 8 hour trip. This was proof of achieving something if you try hard even though it looks impossible.
会場では夜明け前からテント設置が始まりました。せっせと写真を展示していると、いつの間にかお客様が集まってきていました。 We started to set up the booth before sun rise. While we were still working on it, some customers started gathering before we knew it.
そして、バンちゃんのブースにも。 Of course, people came in Banchan’s booth as well.
彼はこのショーで2枚の写真を売ることができました。 He sold two pictures in this show. Unlike the last show which lasted three days, this one was only one day.
私が予想した通りの写真が真っ先に売れ、次に前回売れた写真でした。 The picture I liked most was sold first, and the first picture he sold at the previous show was sold second.
基本的に、私は何もすることがないのでブラブラと歩き回って、色々な人と話をしては情報収集をしていました。特に、他の写真家さん達のショーの準備の仕方は非常に参考になりました。 Basically, I have nothing to do there, except wandering around, talking to people and gathering information from them. The conversation with other photographers were especially good. They gave me many valuable pieces of information.
定年退職後に取ったガラス細工のクラスにハマり、挙げ句の果てにショーに参加するようになった75歳ぐらいの女性との会話は特に感動しました。 One of the artists I talked to was an old lady about 75 years old, and I was quite moved by her story. She took a glass art class after her retirement. She then got hooked on it, and kept making more and more little things, and ended up selling her glass art at art festivals.
「小さな割れ物の商品が多いから、準備だけでも大変そうですね。」と、私。 “It looks like quite hard work even simply setting up your booth because you have so many little fragile items” I said to her.
「内向的な性格だけど、ショーでお客様と話をすることは楽しいから続けてるの。」と、女性。 “I keep doing this because I enjoy talking to customers despite the fact that I am quite introverted.” she replied.
これはまさにボケ防止対策です。 It’s a wonderful way to prevent dementia as we get older.
会話の終わりに、「アタなとの会話が楽しかったから、これ、あげる。持っていきなさい。」と、包んでくれた彼女のヒット商品。 At the end of the conversation, she said, “Here, this is my most popular item. I want to give it to you because I enjoyed the conversation with you.”
もう会うこともないけれど、大切にします。彼女のガラス細工を通して届いてくる温かい光は、彼女の気持ちそのものだから。 I will treasure it although I don’t think I will see her again because the warm light through her glass ornament is indeed her warm heart itself.
雨のため、ハンキングが中止となり、思いついてザイオン国立公園の西側に行ってきました。 We went to the west side of Zion National Park spontaneously because our group hike was cancelled due to rain.
私の好きなレッドビュートが煙っていました。 My favorite Red Butte was smoky.
更に奥へ向かいます。 We went on further.
雪が止んでいて、ラッキーでした。 We were lucky that the snow stopped.
渓谷の中とは違う美しさです。 West Zion has a different beauty from the valley.
木々が嬉しそうに踊ってます。 The snow covered trees were dancing happily.
それも束の間、霧が立ち込めてきました。 But then, the weather changed quickly and the fog set in.
もう何も見えなくなってきたので引き返すことにしました。 We couldn’t see much any longer, so we decided to go back home.
雷もゴロゴロ鳴り始めました。 The thunder started rumbling, too.
雷の写真を撮るのが好きなバンちゃんは、名残惜しそうでしたが、フロントガラスが割れそうなほど激しい雹の攻撃に遭い、早々に退散しました。 Banchan who loves to take lightning pictures seemed sad to leave there, but super strong hail poured onto our car, so we left there quickly.
ザイオンの西の景色は、私たちをホクホクさせてくれました。でも、実はもっとホクホクするものに遭遇しましたが、その話は明日書きます。 West Zion pleased us and we were content with it. But actually, we received a big surprise from there. I will write about it tomorrow.
たくさんのお地蔵さんの集会のようで、面白い。 笠地蔵のおとぎ話を思い出しました。 They looked like many Jizo statues (see Note 1) at a convention. The scene reminded me of a folktale in Japan, Kasajizo. (see Note 2)

Note 1: You can see Jizo statues along country roads throughout Japan. They are guardian deities of children in Japan. They also protect travelers. Long ago, when we didn’t have transportation like cars and trains, people couldn’t visit temples. Therefore, Jizo statues were made nearby their homes. You often see them wearing red hats and bibs. It used to be believed that they would ward off evil. For more information, see this web site.
Note 2: The moral of the folktale is that pure kindness and generosity without expecting any reward will be rewarded. Kasa is translated as “Straw hat”. Here is an English version of the story at YouTube.
