裏庭の一角、ローズマリーの低木の中、卵を1つ発見しました。長さ 2.5 cm (1 inches) ぐらいの小さな卵。 I found one egg in a rosemary shrub in a corner of our backyard. It was a small egg, about 2.5 cm (1 inch) long.
２羽のナゲキバトが枯れ枝を忙しく運んでいたのをみていたので、予想はしていました。 I had seen two Mourning Doves busily carrying dead branches, so I knew what to expect.
まだパインバレー山脈の雪は溶けてないけれど、梨の白い花は咲き始めています。 The snow in the Pine Valley Mountains has not yet melted, but the white flowers of the pears are beginning to bloom.
もう、春の鼓動は激しく鼓動し始めています。ソワソワドキドキの季節が始まりました！ The pulse of spring has already begun to beat fiercely. The restless season has begun!
去年の春から秋にかけてリクガメの生存調査のボランティアをしました。 We volunteered last spring to fall as a research volunteer for the survival study of the tortoises.
なぜかというと、最近、観光のため荒れ果てた荒野まで開拓していこうという動きが活発化しています。具体的には、私たちの家の近くのBLM (The Bureau of Land Management 国土管理局) の管轄下の土地に観光用の道路を通すことを検討中であると聞いたからです。リクガメが危ない。 The reason for this is that recently there has been a growing movement for tourism to open up even the most desolate wilderness areas. Specifically, we have heard that the BLM (The Bureau of Land Management) is considering to designate an off-road trail to a major recreational tourist road through the land under their jurisdiction near our house. The tortoises are in danger.
そこで https://conserveswu.org (ユタ州の南西部を保護する会 ) の下、私達はリクガメの大切な居住地であることを証明するために調査し始めました。 So under https://conserveswu.org (Conserve Southwest Utah), we began researching to prove that this is an important habitat for the recluse tortoises.
リクガメの糞 Tortoise dropping
まず、リクガメの巣だろうと思われる場所探し、そこにモーションセンサーで動作するカメラを設置しました。全部で10機ぐらい。そして、1ヶ月に一回メモリーカードを取り替え、その後、その結果の写真をリビューして報告しました。 First, we looked for a place that would be the burrow of a tortoise, and installed a camera that works with a motion sensor there. About 10 units in all. Then, we replaced the memory card once a month, and after that, we reviewed and reported the resulting pictures.
広大な土地に出かけて行って、カメラを設置したり、メモリーカードの交換などはたいしたことではありませんでした。 It was no big deal to go out into the vast expanse of land to set up cameras and change memory cards.
でも、写真のリビューと報告プロセスは、半端じゃなく忍耐力が必要な物でした。今回、初めてこのような調査、観察活動に参加して、大変な仕事だなぁとつくづく思いました。 But the photo-review and reporting process was something that required enormous patience. This was my first time participating in such a survey and observation activity, and I really felt that it is a tough job.
20,000 – 30,000 枚の写真に何が写っているのかを精査して、スプレッドシートに書き込んでいくわけです。それがリクガメが写っていのなら意欲も出ますが、私がリビューしたカードには、60％は風によって動いた草、30％がカンガルーラット、残りの10％がジリスと鳥が写っていただけで、リクガメは0％という悲惨な結果でした。 So you scrutinize 20,000 – 30,000 photos to see what is in them and write it all down on a spreadsheet. If it was a tortoise, I would be motivated, but on the cards I reviewed, 60% had wind-driven grass, 30% had kangaroo and wood rats, the remaining 10% only had ground squirrels and birds, and a dismal 0% had tortoises.
眠くなりそうなほどの膨大で単調な作業は、苦しかったです。 The enormous and monotonous work was agonizing to the point of drowsiness.
4年前、この土地に移り住んだ頃、道端を歩いていたのを目撃しています。当然たくさん生息しているはずですが、減少しているのかもしれません。 When we moved here 4 years ago, we saw them walking along a dirt. Naturally there should be many inhabiting the area, but they may be declining.
私達は1匹も見ることができませんでしたが、他のボランティアたちはたくさん目撃したようです。その結果、予算が降りて、今年もプロジェクトが続くことになりました。Although we didn’t see any tortoises, other volunteers saw plenty. Therefore, the project will continue to be funded for this year.
先々週、バンちゃんのお抱え運転手の私は、待ち時間にトレーナーの家の近所を歩き回っていました。鳥が気になったからです。 The week before last, as Banchan’s chauffeur, I was walking around his trainer’s neighborhood while waiting. I was curious about the birds.
不審者だと思われたのかもしれません。私が立ち止まっていた前の家から住人がでてきました。 They may have thought I was suspicious. A person came out of the house in front of which I was standing.
そこでアオサギに興味がある旨を話したら、それじゃあということで、庭の奥の方まで案内してくれました。 I told him that I was interested in the heron, and he offered to take me to the back of the garden.
そこからは、勿論、オオサギが近くで見えたので、大喜びした。でも、それ以上に私を興奮させたのは、農家の動物たちでした。 From there, of course, I was delighted to see the great blue heron up close. But what excited me even more were his farm animals.
その日は、カメラを持っていなかったので、翌日お邪魔して撮らせていただきました。 I did not have my camera with me that day, so I visited the next day and took these pictures.
この日は、なんと産みたての卵まで頂いてしまいました。新鮮卵、最高です。 I even got freshly laid eggs that day. Fresh eggs are the best.
どの鶏の卵だったんでしょうね。 I wonder which hen’s eggs they were.
こんな思いもかけない出会いがあるなら、お抱え運転手業もたまにはいいかもね。 With unexpected encounters like this, a chauffeur-driver business might be a good idea once in a while.
土曜日は夜明け前に起きて、暗いうちから土曜のマーケットに行っています。この日もまさに出かけようとしていたら、裏庭にボビーを発見。なんという、タイミングの悪さ。 On Saturdays, we get up before dawn and go to the Saturday market in the dark. On this very day, just as we were about to head out, we spotted Bobby in the backyard. What a bad, bad timing.
ボブキャットのボビーは2年前、初めて訪れてくれた時には、まだ子供でした。 Bobby the Bobcat was just a cub when he first visited us two years ago.
どうやら、お食事中だったようです。 Apparently, he was having a meal.

後ろ髪を引かれる思いで、ボビーを残して家を出ました。 We reluctantly left home leaving Bobby behind.
この1ヶ月、忙しくしていました。気がつけばもう9月。 I have been busy this past month. Before I knew it, it was already September.
私が目標にしていた9月2日を翌日に迎え、苦しんでいました。なぜなら9月2日から自分の製品を近くの野外マーケットで売り出すと決めていたにもかかわらず、雷を伴う激しい嵐と豪雨が来ていたからです。窓にはカエルがペタリと張り付いていました。I was suffering with September 2 coming the next day, because I had set my target day to begin selling stuff at the local Saturday market on September 2. But then severe thunderstorms and torrential rains were coming. A frog was flopping on the window.
翌朝は7時前に家を出て、会場に行く予定でした。初めての小さなお店です。その為にこの１ヶ月間、様々な準備をしてきたんですよねー。でも、雨のため、断念しました。On the morning of September 2, I planned to leave home before 7 am to go to the market. It was the first time I was going to open my booth there. I worked very hard over the past month to get ready. But I had to give up because of the rain.
ま、こんなこともあるものです。さっさと気を取り直して次の土曜日に目標を絞ります。 Well, such things happen. I’ll quickly get back on track and focus on my goals for next Saturday.

メタルプリントを5枚用意しました。その他は4枚セットのコースターです。誰かにそのままプレゼントできるようにラッピングもしてあります。 I made five metal prints. The others are various sets of 4 coasters each.
私の過去15年間ほどの野生動物の写真が中心です。嬉しいことに、お店を出す前に、すでに1セット売れました。ボブキャットのコースターです。 They are mostly wildlife photos from my past 15 years or so. Encouragingly, I already sold one set before I opened the store. That was a set of Bobcat coasters.
年内に出資額を取り戻すのが目標です。目標は高い方がいいのだ。 My goal is to regain the initial investment by the end of the year. The higher the goal, the better.
一年前からバンちゃんがすでにアートショーをスタートさせていたので、私もきっとできると思えるようになりました。彼の勇気に感謝です。 Since Ban-chan had already started attending art festivals a year ago, it made me feel that I could do it too. I am grateful for his courage.
大雨のおかげで、昨夜、今まで見たことのない訪問客がありました。 Thanks to the heavy rain, we had a visit last night from a brand new type of animal.
16cm もある大きなウシガエルです。 This is a large American bullfrog, measuring 6.5 inches in length.
今朝、家の回りを探してみましたが、見つかりませんでした。久しぶりにいい天気の今日、サッサとどこかの池に帰って行ったのでしょう。 We looked around the house this morning, but could not find it. It was the first nice day in a long time, and it must have gone back to a pond somewhere in a hurry.
嵐のおかげで、また雨漏りがありました。ご近所では木が倒れたり、家の中まで浸水したりとたくさんの被害が報告されています。でも、嵐の後、光を浴びて輝く草木を見ると勇気が湧いてきます。 Thanks to the storm, we had another leak. Oh dear! Many of our neighbors have reported lots of damages, with trees falling over and flooding into their houses. But after the storm, seeing the grass and trees shining in the light gives me courage.
きっと、大丈夫。次の土曜日、きっとうまくいくよ！ I’ll be fine. Next Saturday, it will be fine!
2cmぐらいの小さなヒキガエルです。多分、まだ陸に上がってきたばかりです。 It is a small toad, about 1 inch. It has probably just come ashore.
去年の8月に撮ったものです。ヒキガエル自体はいい写真なのですが、斜めに交差している枝がどうしても気に入りませんでした。そこで久しぶりにフォトショップを使って枝を取り除いてみました。 I took this picture last August. The toad itself is a nice photo, but I just didn’t like the diagonal crossing branch. So I removed the branches using Photoshop for the first time in a while.
日本語名はシジミチョウです。シジミの貝殻の形に似ているかららしいです。 Its Japanese name is Shijimi Chou. It is said to be because it resembles the shape of the shell of a whitebelly clam.
英語名は Gossamer-Winged Butterfly（細い蜘蛛の糸のような、薄い生地のような、そんな羽を持つチョウ）です。前から見ると確かに毛がフサフサと生えていて、蜘蛛の糸のようです。 Its English name is Gossamer-Winged Butterfly. From the front, it does indeed have fluffy hairs that look like spider silk.
面白いことに、羽を閉じているときは、カモフラージュ色なのに、羽を広げると美しい薄青色が見えます。 What is interesting is that when the wings are closed, they are a camouflage color, but when the wings are spread, they reveal a beautiful light blue color.
小さな、小さな 2-3cmぐらいのチョウです。 It is a small, tiny butterfly, about 1 inch long.
こんな小さい花、ポレモニウムが咲く高原で見かけました。 We saw it on a plateau where these small flowers of Polemonium bloom.
森が捻じられているわけではなく、そこに生息する木が捻られているので「ねじられたもり（ツイステッド フォーレスト）」と名付けられました。 It was named “Twisted Forest” not because the forest is twisted, but because the trees that inhabit it are twisted.
ここはブライアンヘッドからそれほど遠くない場所ですが、行くには不便な場所です。オフロードの道をうねうねと走り、駐車場から1時間ほど歩くと荒れた丘になり、そこに捻られた木が、ブリスタルコーン パインが生息しています。 It was not far from Brian Head, but it was an inconvenient place to get to. A meandering off-road drive and an hour’s walk from the parking lot leads to a badlands hill where twisted trees live, home of the bristlecone pine trees.

ブリスタルコーン パインで有名な場所はなんといってもカリフォルニア州のホワイトマウンテンです。標高4300ｍの山ですが、その中腹、3,000ｍ付近にこの木のグローブがあり、そこには世界最古の木がまだ生息しています。5,000年近く生きているそうです。私たちもそこを訪れました。その時にはまだ1年ぐらいしか経っていない紫色をしたコーンを見ました。2年ぐらい経つと茶色になるそうです。 The most famous place for bristlecone pines is, of all places, the White Mountains in California. The highest peak is over 14,000 feet-high, but in the middle of the mountain, around 11,000 feet above sea level, there is a grove of these trees, where the oldest tree in the world still lives, around 5,000 years old. When we visited there, we saw purple cones that were only about a year old at the time; they say they turn brown after about two years.
ここ、ツイステッドフォーレストには以前にも訪れていますが、日暮れから夜にかけての訪問は初めでです。 We have been to Twisted Forest before, but this is my first time visiting from dusk to night.
南と北の方向を確認し、私はこの木の近くに三脚を設置しました。そして、日が沈むのを待ちました。 Having identified the direction of south and north, I set up my tripod near this tree. Then I waited for the sun to set.
下の写真の中央に星が見えます。小さすぎてわからないかもしれませんが、西の方角の一番星が出てきました。カメラの焦点を合わせるには格好の星でした。 You can see the star in the center of the picture below. It may be too small to make out, but it was the first star to appear in the west. It was a good star to focus the camera on.
まだまだ明るすぎてよく見えませんが、とりあえず北の空に見える北斗七星を撮りました。 It was still too bright to see clearly, but I took a picture of the Big Dipper in the northern sky anyway.
南の空には、微かに天の川が見えてきました。バンちゃんが邪魔でしたが、赤いヘッドライトを当てて、写真の一部にしてみました。 The Milky Way was faintly visible in the southern sky. Banchan was in the way, but I shined my red headlights on him and made him a part of the picture.
南の空、天の川の右横にはさそり座が見えます。これも私の5本の指に入る確認できる星座の一つです。 In the southern sky, to the right of the Milky Way, you can see the constellation Scorpius. This is another one of my five recognizable constellations.
この夜は、もう少し暗くなるのを待っていたかったんですが、何しろ真っ暗な帰り道なので程々にして帰りました。 This evening, we wanted to wait for it to get a little darker, but it was pitch-dark on the way home, after all, so we left.
名前が示す通り、蛾の仲間ですが、蛾のような振る舞いをしないのがハミングバードモスじゃないかなと思ってます。 As the name suggests, it is a moth, but I think the Hummingbird Moth is unique because it does not behave like a moth.
普通、蛾は夜行性ですが、ハミングバードモスは日中に飛んでます。 Moths are usually nocturnal, but hummingbird moths fly during the day.
蝶々のように長い舌を使って花の蜜を吸います。 They use their long, butterfly-like tongues to suck nectar from flowers.
そして、名前のようにハミングバード（ハチドリ）ぐらいの大きさで、飛び方もハミングバードに似ています。ハミングバードのように、花の前でホバリングをするからです。 And, as its name suggests, it is about the size of a hummingbird and flies similarly to a hummingbird, especially how it hovers in front of flowers to drink the nectar.
シーダーブレイクス国定公園にて、ペンステモンの花から蜜を美味しそうに吸っているハミングバードモスでした。 This was a hummingbird moth (aka white-lined sphinx moth) at Cedar Breaks National Monument, sucking delicious nectar from a penstemon flower.
シーダーブレイクス国定公園のアルパイン レイク トレイルは3-4kmの短いトレイルです。 The Alpine Lake Trail at Cedar Breaks National Monument is a short 2 mile long trail.
花が咲き乱れて美しい季節でした。それと同時に数億の虫が空中を飛び交かう、というか、虫だらけの中を、目も鼻も口もあまり開けないように我慢して歩いていきました。 It was a beautiful season with flowers in full bloom. At the same time, hundreds of millions of insects were flying through the air, or rather, I walked through the air full of insects, trying patiently not to open my eyes, nose, or mouth too much.
鳥たちは嬉しそう。食べ物が彼らの周りを飛んでいるからです。 The birds seem happy. Because food is flying around them.
虫地獄を我慢した甲斐がありました。視界がパッと開け、静かなアルパイン レイクがありました。 It was worth putting up with the bug hell. The view opened up and there was the Alpine lake.
倒れた木もそのままで、トレイルもあるようでないような、手入れが全くされていない自然そのままの池でした。その中に動いているものを発見しました。 The pond was pristine and unkempt, with fallen trees intact and no trails. We found something moving in the middle of the pond.
これは、なんと、サンショウウオです。初めて見ました。 This is, by golly, a salamander. I saw it for the first time.
前足には4本の指、後ろ脚にも4本の指がありました。種類によっては後ろ脚に5本の指があるものもあるそうです。 They had four fingers on their front legs and four fingers on their hind legs. Some species have five fingers on their hind legs.
小さいものから、大きいものは多分直径25cmぐらいあるものもいました。 Some were small and some were large, perhaps 12 inches in length including the tail.
このサンショウウオについての記述は公園のガイドやあらゆるウェブサイトを調べても載っていません。 There is no mention of this salamander in any of the park guides or any websites I have checked.
まだ公園のビジターセンターが工事中なのでウェブサイトもアップデートできていないんでしょうか。こんな貴重な生き物についての記述がないのは残念です。でも、記述がないから観光客に知られず、ひっそりと生きていけるのかもしれません。 I guess the park visitor center is still under construction so the website has not yet been updated. It is a pity that there is no description of such a precious creature. On the other hand, perhaps the lack of description allows them to live quietly and unnoticed by tourists.
水中の生物を水上から撮るのは、難しいですね。以下のビデオの質は良くないですが、雰囲気がわかると思います。 It is difficult to photograph or video underwater life from above the water. The quality of the following video is not great, but it gives you an idea of this amazing creature.
ナキウサギは高原に住むウサギ科の動物です。ウサギ科なのに、耳が長くなく、丸い形をしています。標高3,350メートル以上、夏なのにまだ雪が残っている丘の岩場に住んでいました。 The Pika is a member of the rabbit family that lives in the highlands. Even though it is a member of the rabbit family, it does not have long ears, but they are round in shape. At an altitude of over 11,000 feet, they live on the rocky slopes of the hills where snow still remains even into summer.
この日の目的はナキウサギを撮ることでした。だからズームレンズが必須でしたが、歩く距離を考えて泣きながら断念し、軽い100mmマクロレンズだけを持っていきました。 The purpose of the day was to photograph the Pika. So a zoom lens was a must, but considering the distance I had to walk, I gave up in tears and brought only a lightweight 100mm macro lens.
ここがナキウサギの住む場所です。 This was where the Pika lives.
広い岩場を見渡していても、岩と同色をした20cm足らずのナキウサギを見つけるのは至難の業でした。バンちゃんが、「あそこに居るよ」と囁いてくれましたが、どこに居るのか分からずシャッターを押し続けました。下の写真には、ナキウサギが写っています。どこだかわかったら拍手を送ります。 Looking around the large rocky area, it was extremely difficult to find a Pika since they are less than 8 inches long and the same color as the rocks. Ban-chan whispered to me, “There he is,” but I couldn’t see him. So I kept pressing the shutter button, not knowing where he was. In the photo below, you can see a pika. I will applaud if you can find out where it is.

この画像を見て、800mmレンズを持ってこなかったことを後悔しました。 Seeing this image made me regret not bringing my 800mm lens.

ま、このショットは結構いいので、これでいいことにします。草のお食事を前にして、満足そうなナキウサギです。 Well, this shot is pretty good, so I’ll leave it at that. This is a Pika looking satisfied with its meal of grass in front of it.
もう少しで食べ終わりそう。 It was almost done eating.
ところで、ナキウサギはどちらかと言うと、ハムスターに似ているのになぜウサギ科に属するのでしょうか。 By the way, why does the Pika belong to the rabbit family when it looks more like a hamster?
もしかしたら、その食性がウサギのようであるからかもしれません。植物を食べ、まず、緑色の柔らかい糞を出します。その後、その柔らかい糞を栄養を取るため再び食べ、丸い糞を出すそうです。ウサギも同じ事をするそうです。 Perhaps it is because its diet is rabbit-like. It eats plants and produces soft green feces. But then they eat the soft droppings again for nourishment and produce round droppings. Rabbits do the same thing.
3万以上の写真画像に追われてます。その理由は後ほど説明します。 I’m busy with over 30,000 photo images. The reason for this will be explained later.

6月初めの頃、サバクゴファーガメに出会いました。まだ若いカメからそれなりに成長しているものまで、なんと20匹ぐらいもいたんです。カメの生息区域のジャックポットを当てた感じです。 Around the beginning of June, we came across Desert tortoises. There were a whopping 20 or so of them, ranging from young tortoises to those that were reasonably mature. It was like hitting the jackpot of the tortoise habitat area.
その中でも、このカメは巣穴から外を眺めていました。 Among them, this tortoise was looking out from its burrow.
私たちはカメの巣穴を探していただけに、貴重な遭遇となりました。 We were just looking for tortoise burrows and this was a rare encounter.
面白いことが満載の過去2ヶ月間でした。明日から少しづつご紹介します。 The past couple months have been full of interesting things. I will introduce some of them tomorrow.
