アメリカツリスガラの巣作り、その1 – Verdin Nest Making (Part 1)

鳥の観察をするようになって、気づいたこと。 – I had an epiphany since I started observing birds.

ただ生きる。それだけで尊い！ – Just live, it’s precious by itself!

目下アメリカツリスガラたちは巣作りの真っ最中。以下の写真は裏庭の木に作られつつある彼らの巣です。身の丈以上もある枝やフワフラしたものを巣に運んでいます。 – Now, Verdin are in the middle of making nests.  The pictures below are Verdins working hard, bringing twigs longer than themselves, and bringing fluffy stuff to the future nest.

でも、先週、強い風の日があったので心配していたんですよね。案の定、風でせっかく集めた枝が垂れ下がってしまいました。ここ数日、姿を見ません。諦めちゃったのかな。胸が痛みます。 – But a week ago, we had a very windy night.  I worried about the nest, and sure enough, the bundle of twigs fell apart with half hanging from the tree.  I haven’t seen the Verdin pair since then.  I wonder if they have given it up.  My heart aches.

多くの苦難を乗り越えて巣が作られて行くんですね。ここがダメならきっとどこかで彼らは巣作りをしているはず。もう少し様子を見ましょうか。 – Going through many hardships, they will, make their nest somewhere, even if it’s not here anymore.  I will observe a little longer.

雨上がり – After the Rain

しばらく続いた雨も上がり、久しぶりに夕日を受けて裏庭から見えるレッドロックが曇り空に浮き上がった。 – This is the Red Rock view from our backyard garden at sunset.  The gorgeous light lit the rock as it emerged from the clouds after the rain.

その翌日、スカウト洞窟まで登った。 – The next day, we went up to Scout Cave.

6フィートの間隔を守っていけば、きっと大丈夫。- Make sure we stay 6 feet apart and it should be all right. The two in the middle are married, so it’s ok. 

コロナ騒動が終わるまで、今できることをしよう。- Let’s do what we can until this COVID-19 crisis is over.

FR006 という道 – FR006

FR006 は Veyo Shoal Creek Road とも呼ばれ、ユタ州の219号線から Veyo という町に抜ける森林道です。エンタープライズ貯水池までは舗装されていますが、その後は舗装なし。オフロード車でないと少々危ない。その日、その辺に行った帰り道、突然思い立って走り出した道でした。- FR006 is a Forest Service Road also known as Veyo Shoal Creek Road running from Utah State Route 219 to the town of Veyo.  It’s paved up to Enterprise Reservoir but after that, it becomes an unpaved road.  You need an offroad vehicle to take this road.  We didn’t plan it but decided, on the spur of the moment, to check it out on the way back from the the town of Enterprise.

さあ、オフロードの始まり。- OK, we are ready for an adventure.

予備知識ゼロで入り込んだ道は、私たちを感動させてくれました。 – We were moved so much by the unknown road.

ほとんど誰も訪れることのない道だからか、美しさが目にしみる。- Is it because few come here?  The beauty of the views took our breath away.

感動は、遠くじゃなく、本当はすぐそこにあったりするんだよね。- The amazing view made me realize that you can get a great experience close to home, not just far away.   

こんな突然のご褒美は、私を幸せにしてくれます。- The unexpected reward of an experience like this makes me so happy.

幸せも、勿論すぐそこにあったりする。だって、幸せは自分で作り出すものだかね。- Yes, happiness is also right here next to me because I am the one who creates it.

地球の歴史 – Earth History

地球の歴史とコロラド高原を勉強しています。本やウェブサイトを読んで、一人で地球史マップにノートを書き加えていくのは、意外に楽しい。- I started studying the history of the Earth and the Colorado Plateau.  By reading books and websites, I add post-it-notes with my interests to my history map.  The process of this kind of study is surprisingly interesting.

すでに知っている方は多いとは思いますが、その過程で、私にとっての”驚きの事実”が三つありました。- I have found three astonishing facts while doing this. Although it seems they are known to many people, they new and shocking to me.  Here are those three facts:

  1. アメリカ大陸は今でも動いています。過去の話ではなく、毎日、爪が伸びるのと同じスピードでユーラシア大陸から遠ざかっているんです。この事実を前にすると、いつ地震が起きても不思議じゃない。- North America is moving even now.  It’s not a story of the past, it is moving away from Eurasia with the same speed that our nails grow.  I must say that it’s natural to have earthquakes at anytime.
  2. 地球は今、氷河期にあります。え〜！ですよね。詳しくは、間氷期という、氷河期の中でも寒さが温暖な時期ではありますが。- We are in the middle of an Ice age.  Wow!  To be exact, we are in an “Interglacial” period within the ice age.
  3. 地球誕生から、5回も生物が絶滅しています。この事実を踏まえると、人間も含めて今現在のすべての生物はいつか絶滅する時が来ることが予想されます。– We had experienced five mass extinctions since the birth of Earth.  If so, we can easily imagine that we could have another extinction in the future involving many species including our own species of course.

ね、面白いでしょ？- Isn’t it interesting?

もう一つ、ヒトの歴史は138億年前に起こったビッグバンから見るとカゲロウの命より短いんですよ。想像を超えている世界ですよね。でも、そんなふうに思うと、私たちの人生は今しかないような気になってきます。 This is only my realization that our life is much shorter than a Mayfly‘s life based on the Earth’s history since the Big Bang around 13.8 billion years ago.  It’s way beyond my imagination but I start to think that we should enjoy this short moment on Earth.

パインバレー山脈 – Pine Valley Mountains

パインバレー山脈はザイオン国立公園コロブテラスロードからも見えます。ハイウェイ15号線を隔てて反対側にあります。つまり、ハリケーン断層の反対側とも言えます。 – The Pine Valley Mountains are visible even from Kolob Terrace Road in Zion National Park.  They are on the other side of HWY 15.  It means that you can say they are on the other side of Hurricane fault.

メサからも見えます。こんなに長く連なっています。この山脈は実は世界最大のラコリスがあることで有名です。- You can see them from Mesa as well.  Aren’t they long?  They are actually famous because they are formed from a laccolith which is the largest in the world.

私の家の裏庭からは見えませんが、ちょっと歩けばすぐ見えます。この角度からだと、どれほど大きい山脈かわかりませんでしたが、メサから眺めてその大きさに驚きました。- I can’t see them from our backyard, but the peaks start to show up soon when I walk around our neighborhood.  Our view is side view, so the mountains don’t look as large. But I prefer the view from our neighborhood.  

パインバレー山脈は St George の街をどっしりと守ってくれているような雰囲気があります。- Pine Valley Mountains remind me of a fatherly figure that is protecting the town of St George.

西へ – Going West

コロブテラスからスミスメサ、そしてメサロードへと向かいます。再び、自家製地図を参照。- We switched from Kolob Terrace on to Smith Mesa and Mesa road.  See my map below.

ここはすでに公園の外です。そして道は舗装道路ではなく、赤土となります。雪や雨が降ると通れるのかどうか心配です。特にメサロードの数カ所はオフロード車でないと危険かもしれません。- It’s already outside of Zion NP.  The road  is unpaved red dirt.  It could be very bad in the snow or rain.  There are a few dangerous spots on Mesa Road which might require an offroad vehicle.

ハリケーン断層があった後も残っているメサ。牛や馬が放牧されています。Even after Hurricane Fault, the Mesa remained. Cows and horses are grazing there.

この一帯の地形は地質学の知識がない私でも面白い。なぜなら何十億年も前から続いていた地殻変動を目の前で確認できるからです。とりわけわかりやすいのは、2500万年前から始まったハリケーン断層です。はっきりと自分の目で確認することができます。- It’s simply fascinating to see the earth formations around here, even though I don’t have much of a background in geology.  Especially seeing the Hurricane Fault, which began 25 milion years ago, it is easy to understand how it works, because I really can see it clearly.

<バンちゃん提供、Contributed by Banchan.>この斜面の向こう側にハリケーン断層が走っていて、断崖絶壁です。横から見るともっとわかりやすいですが、こちら側が上に押し上げられています。 – The other side of the slope is a sharp cliff. This side clearly shows the uplift that has occurred.

Red Butte: ビュートはメサの浸食がさらに進んだ孤立丘。As a Mesa’s erosion progresses, the top of the Mesa gets smaller and becomes a Butte.

高校で習った地学は何も覚えていません。毎時間、眠ってばかりいましたからね〜。でも、こんな校外学習があったらきっと好きになっていたと思います。- I don’t remember anything from high school geology class because I always slept through the class.  But I am sure that I woud have loved geology if I could have had a field trip to this area.

ザイオンの奥 – Far Side of Zion NP

ザイオン国立公園の続きです。コロブテラスロードの先には貯水池がありますが、冬はご覧の通り雪のため閉鎖されています。- This is the continuation of Zion National Park.  If you drive further north on Kolob Terrace road, you will eventually get to a reservoir. But as you can see from the image below, it’s closed for Winter.

仕方なく引き返し、スミスメサロードからメサロードを通って帰ってきましたが、ザイオン渓谷内からの眺めとは違い、大きく開けている台地を見ることになるので、気持ちがいい。 – So we reluctantly turned back and went to Smith Mesa Road instead. This road eventually becomes Mesa Road on the way back home.  Although it was unfortunate that we couldn’t go farther north, we still enjoyed the view.  It’s vast and open, and so different from the Zion NP valley.

渓谷内からは見ることのできないピークが続々登場します。- Many peaks that you can’t see from the valley were there.

ところで、面白い光景がありました。コロブテラス沿いにひっそりと True North という保養地がありました。そして、こんな山奥にも FedEx が配達に来ていたんです。こういう場所に FedEx の車は場違いで予期しませんでしたが、こういう所こそメールオーダーの本領発揮とも言えますかね。 – By the way, we saw an interesting sight along the Kolob Terrace Road.  There is a retreat called True North standing quietly.  I can image that it’s a nice place to have a retreat indeed.  The interesting thing we observed was that a FedEx truck was there in front of the gate.  To me, it was such an odd thing to see in such a quiet place.  I guess you could also say that it’s the true power of the mail order system for remote places like this.

 

 

Kolob Terrace Road

コロブテラスという道はハイウェイ9号線沿いのヴァージンという町から入ります。こんな風にいよいよザイオン国立公園の山が見えてきたら、公園入り口は近い。- Kolob Terrace Road starts from the town of Virgin on highway 9.  The entrance to Zion National Park is close once you start seeing the peaks of the park.

入り口には入り口のサインがありますが、パークレンジャーがいるわけではありません。だからお金を払う場所もないんです。公園と一般道路をただ一つ区別しているのは、道路の色です。- There is a park sign, but no park ranger to greet you.  So you don’t need to pay the entrance fee either.  The color of the road is unique and is a good way to know that you are in the park.

一般道は普通のアスファルト色ですが、公園内の道路は茶色です。- The color of the general public roads are normally gray asphalt color, but the color inside the park is a red earth color.

コロブテラスから入る公園にはとても魅力があります。でも、観光客はほとんどいません。これからもずっとそうあってほしいです。秘密ね！- Zion National Park from Kolob Terrace entrance has a special charm that few people see. I would like to keep it that way. Shhh.

足跡　- Footprints

朝、Ivin という隣町の貯水池に行ってみた。 – We went to Ivin’s Reservoir one early morning.

おや？足跡がいっぱい。幾何学模様のデザインみたいで面白い。誰の仕業？ – Wow, what is this?  Who made such footprints?  It’s so interesting as if they created a geometric pattern.

やっぱり。クーツ君。君だよね？  – I thought so.  It is you who made such an artistic design, isn’t it?

石の国　- Rock Country

クリストファー コロンバスのアメリカ大陸の発見の話ではありません。（念のための注記：い・し・の・く・に と言ってコロンバスがアメリカ大陸を発見した1492年を暗記しました。）- This is not about the discovery of Americas by Christopher Columbus.  (Note: The Japanese Title is “Ishi no Kuni”.  The meaning is literally “Ishi” = “Rock” and “Kuni” = “Country”.  However, the pronounciation of “I” and “Shi” also means “one” and “four”.  Similarly, the pronunciation of “Ku” and “Ni” also means “nine” and “two”.  So all together, it becomes the number 1492, the year of the discovery of the Americas by Christopher Columbus.)

ここ、セイントジョージはコロラド高原の西南端。ナバホ砂岩に覆われていて、とても美しい町。この砂岩の美しさの原因は砂岩に浸み込んだ鉄分にある。その鉄分が酸化して白い砂が赤、ピンク、紫などに変色した結果だと言われている。ただ、ジュラ紀、1.8 億年も前から長い年月をかけての圧縮作用であっても、砂でできているが故、ライムストーンなどと比べルト、そんなに硬くないらしい。 – The city of Saint George, UT, is located at the very southwest corner of the Colorado plateau.  The area is covered by the Navajo sandstone formation.  Because it includes iron, the colors of the layers include reds, pinks, purples, etc. depending on the amount of iron oxide in that layer.  During the Jurassic period, about 180 million years ago, it was compressed under great pressure, but it is not so hard compared to limestone because it is “sandstone” after all.

新年早々、硬い話になりました。 – Sorry for being such a hard topic from the beginning of the new year.

でも、ジャ〜ン！ついに発見したんですよ。理想の石。- But I wanted to write about this because we finally found the ideal rock.  See below picture!

石屋さんが紹介してくれた石切場は、 私たちの家から約1時間半ほどの場所、Kanab という美しい町にありました。- The rock engraving shop suggested we go to this quarry in Kanab, about 1.5 hours away from our house.  

そこで1時間以上探索。諦めかけていた時に突然現れた。- It caught our eyes after searching more than an hour when we were about to give up.

そもそもなぜ石探しをしていたかというと、日本でいう表札のためです。下の写真の中央にある石は場所的にも形としても表札に理想的なんですが、この石はやわらかい。カービングには適していないんですね。- You may ask me “why a rock?”  It’s a good question.  We were looking for a rock to engrave our house address number on it.  See picture below.  The rock in the middle is the perfect size and location for its purpose.  Unfortunately, it has one problem. It is too soft.

ほら、こんな感じで十五年前に設置されてから、雨風によって表面の損傷がよく分かります。- If you look at it closely, you can see how much it’s been damaged by rain and wind. 

この石の色好きなんですが、石屋さんによると5-10年もしたら、見えなくなると言われてしまいました。この地、セイントジョージ産の石は柔らかいんです。そこで、もう少し硬い石探しが始まったというわけです。- I like this rock, but if we used it, the house number would not be visible in 5-10 years according to the rock engraving shop.  The red rock from Saint George is unfortunately too soft.  This is the reason why we went out to look for a rock.

Kanab の赤石はもっと硬いらしい。来週、石屋さんが引き取りに行って、その後、家の番号をカービング。そして、ここに設置されます。- The red sandstone in Kanab is known to be harder.  Once the rock we picked out is moved to the shop, they will engrave our house number and install it at the front of our lot.

そうしたら、私たちの長かった石の国への引っ越しが、完了だ〜〜〜！  Then, we can finally declare that our move to the Rock Country is complete.  It took 10 long months!

Piano Guys Concert

一昨日、12月4日の夜は雨でしたが、1時間以上かけて Cedar City の南ユタ州立大学まで行って来ました。なぜなら、大ファンの The Piano Guys のコンサートがあったからです。- I am a huge fan if The Piano Guys.  So we went to see their concert at Southern Utah University in Cedar City about an hour away from our house, even though it was raining heavily, on December 4th. 

知らなかったんですが、彼らはここセイントジョージの出身なんです。ピアノショップに来ていた仲間といつの間にかグループ活動を始めていたら、こんなに有名になってしまった。- I didn’t know this, but Saint George is their home town.  Everything started from a piano shop in St George, and through YouTube, they became so famous.

ＣDとiTuneでしか聞いていなかった私にとって、コンサートはびっくり仰天、想像をはるかに越えて楽しんで来ました。- For someone like me, who knew them only through CD’s and iTunes, their concert was a huge surprise, beyond my expectation.  I enjoyed the concert immensely.  

コンサートに行かなければ、わからないんですねー。だから詳しいことは秘密です。- I don’t want to tell you exactly how it went because you need to see it for yourself.  I think I rediscovered their charm through the concert.  

彼らのメッセージは、笑いの中で優しい。しかも私たちを勇気付けてくれる、そんな感じです。- Their message is always gentle through funny jokes, yet gives you courage to go through all the ups and downs of our lives.

この夜の記事が St George News 新聞に出ていました。 – An article about their concert was in the Saint George Newspaper.

こちらは私たちの家から40分ぐらいのところで収録された素敵なビデオ Twinkle Lullaby。私のベッドルームの窓から見える景色みたい。 – This video, Twinkle Lullaby, was recorded at Kolob Canyon, about 40 minutes away from our home.  It’s just like the view from my bedroom window.

HWY 58 から 15号線 – From HWY 58 to 15

感謝祭のあった先週、カリフォルニアからの帰り道。- This post is about the way back from California in the Thanksgiving week.

シェラネバダ山脈の南端、西側から東側に行くには避けて通れない峠、テハチャピ峠があります。58号線はそこを走っています。行く時は雪の中のドライブで怖かったんですが、帰りは快晴、気持ちがいい。- We have to cross Tehachapi Pass in order for us to go to the eastern side from the western side. Highway 58 runs through there. We needed to drive through it when it was snowing on the way to the west side, but it was a clear sky on the way back.  I felt so good!

峠を越えると、そこはモハビ砂漠。そして、ジョシュアツリーの生息地。- After the pass, the Mojave desert, the home of Joshua Trees, spreads out.

こんなに雪を被っているジョシュアツリーを見たのは初めてです。砂漠地帯で暑いというイメージからは程遠い。- It was my first time seeing them with snow on them.  It’s far from the image I had had till then of living in a hot desert area.

15号線に乗り換えてもモハビ砂漠は続きますが、遠くに見える山も越えてひたすら走り続ければ、私たちの家が近いと感じられます。- The Mojave desert continues on even after we switch to Highway 15.  From that switch, it’s still a long way to go but it gives me a feeling of closeness to home.  Simply go beyond the mountain range and keep going until we reach St. George.
