一等賞の虫取りサービス – Bug Catching Service Winner

裏庭のバラは鳥たちのおかげで健康そのものです。とりわけ、アメリカツリスガラの虫取りサービスは丁寧です。 – Thanks to birds, my rose bushes in the backyard are so healthy.  Verdin’s bug catching service is especially thorough.

もう葉が生い茂ってきたのでよく見えないんですが、毎日たくさんとってくれているようです。 – They come every day and catch many bugs, though I can’t see them well anymore due to densely grown leaves.

感謝です。中でも、このアクロバットアクションは、断然、一等賞をあげたい。薔薇の棘の先に、ほんのわずか右足の足指の一本をかけてバランスを取っている。 – I greatly appreciate them for their efforts.  Look at this acrobatic action.  I want to give this Verdin the first prize.  It balanced well by hooking the tip of one of its claws on its right foot onto a rose thorn.

「シロハラミソサザイさん、その後いかがですか？」- “How are you doing since last time, Mr. Bewick’s Wren?”

「落ち着いてきたけど、まだまだ先が長いよ。」- “It’s getting there but still a long way to go.”

「まあ、メキシコマシコさん、ポーズ決まってますね。」 – “What a Kodak moment Mr. House Finch!”

「ところで、巣作りの方進んでますか？」 – “By the Way, is your nest making going well?”

「彼、あまり手伝ってくれないのよ。」 – “He doesn’t help me so much.”

「そんなことないよ。ほら、こうして枝を集めるんだよ。」 – “That’s not true.  See?  I am gathering twigs like this.”

「アメリカツリスガラさん、もう完成しましたか？」- “Have you completed your nest already, Mr. Verdin?”

「完成と言いたいところだけど、まだ材料が少し足りないんだ。」- “I wish I could say it’s complete, but I need a little more material.”

「こちら、別のシロハラミソサザイさんですね。新居はいかがですか？」- “Oh, this is another Bewick’s Wren.  How do you like the new home?”

「まあまあね。」 – “It’s all right.”

「それは良かった。ところで、この家ですが、ほんの少し移動すること、お話ししましたっけ？」 – “That’s good to hear.  By the way, have I told you that we will move this house a little bit?”

「えっ？そんなの聞いてないよ。」- “Are you serious?  I haven’t heard anything like that.”

「後ほどおしらせします！」- “I will tell you for sure later.”

アメリカツリスガラの巣作り、その2 – Verdin Nest Making (Part 2)

青空を背に受けて、今日も元気なアメリカツリスガラ。 – Verdin is even more cheerful with blue sky today.

郵便受けの近くで見つけたアメリカツリスガラの巣。結構大きいフカフカを持ってきました。 – I found their nest near the mail box.  A verdin brought a big chunk of some fluffy thing.

体制を整えました。 – Verdin repositioned for the next move.

それっ！ –  Up you go!

今度は長い枝ですね。 – This time he brought a long twig.

上手に運べるんですね。 – Wow, I am impressed the way he can carry it.

オスだけが巣作りをすると、どこかで読んだ記憶があるんですが、やっぱり夫婦で作るんですね。 – I didn’t expect to see this because I have read somewhere that only the male Verdin makes the nest.  But that was wrong.  Both verdins participate in building the nest.

二羽で作る方が速いもんね。  – It’s so much faster needless to say.

この巣の完成は近そうです。 – It looks like the completion of the nest is near.

 

アメリカツリスガラの巣作り、その1 – Verdin Nest Making (Part 1)

鳥の観察をするようになって、気づいたこと。 – I had an epiphany since I started observing birds.

ただ生きる。それだけで尊い！ – Just live, it’s precious by itself!

目下アメリカツリスガラたちは巣作りの真っ最中。以下の写真は裏庭の木に作られつつある彼らの巣です。身の丈以上もある枝やフワフラしたものを巣に運んでいます。 – Now, Verdin are in the middle of making nests.  The pictures below are Verdins working hard, bringing twigs longer than themselves, and bringing fluffy stuff to the future nest.

でも、先週、強い風の日があったので心配していたんですよね。案の定、風でせっかく集めた枝が垂れ下がってしまいました。ここ数日、姿を見ません。諦めちゃったのかな。胸が痛みます。 – But a week ago, we had a very windy night.  I worried about the nest, and sure enough, the bundle of twigs fell apart with half hanging from the tree.  I haven’t seen the Verdin pair since then.  I wonder if they have given it up.  My heart aches.

多くの苦難を乗り越えて巣が作られて行くんですね。ここがダメならきっとどこかで彼らは巣作りをしているはず。もう少し様子を見ましょうか。 – Going through many hardships, they will, make their nest somewhere, even if it’s not here anymore.  I will observe a little longer.

裏庭のカモフラージュテントの中。アクションが起こらないのでiPadでゲームをし始めました。すると、何かが目の隅の方を横切ります。同時に外がやけに騒々しいことに気づきました。 – I was inside the camouflage tent in the backyard.  I was so bored with no action in the morning, so I started playing a game on my iPad.  Then, I caught something with the left edge of my eye.  At the same time, I realized that it’s so noisy outside of the tent.

慌てて見回すと、遠くの方に何か居ます。一気にアドレナリンが出て来たようで、心臓バクバクです。 – So I looked around in a hurry, and found something.  My heart started pounding faster as my adrenaline flow increased.

あれはもしかしたら・・・ムナグロムクドリモドキ？ – Could they be Hooded Orioles?

二羽のムナグロムクドリモドキがソニックスピードで向こう三軒ならぬ、六軒両隣ぐらいをビューン、ビューンと飛び回っています。風を切る音が聞こえて来るほどの迫力です。他の鳥達は邪魔にならないよう控えめです。 – Two Hooded Orioles flew around and around the space of about 10 houses with sonic speed.  It was so fast that I could almost hear the sound “zoom, zoom”.  It seems that the other birds stayed out of their way.

この春の恋愛ドラマが収まったら、きちんと撮れる機会が来るでしょうか。期待します。 – I assume it will go back to normal around here once the spring love affair is over, and I hope I have more opportunity to take pictures of them.  

カモフラージュテント – Camouflage Tent

裏庭の鳥たちは、大抵、家の中から2重ガラス窓越しに撮っています。必然、質は落ちます。 – I normally take backyard bird pictures from inside the house through double paned glass windows.  So the quality of the pictures naturally degrades.

「プロでもないし、そんなんいいジャン〜？」とも言えるのですが、ついに買ってしまいました。 – Some people may say, “You are not a professional photographer.  Don’t you care about your photo quality?”  So, we bought a camouflage tent.

中には、カメラだけではなく、椅子、テーブル、お菓子、飲み物、iPad などを入れて、長期戦に備えます。 – Preparing for a long wait, I brought in, of course, a camera, and other necessities like a chair, table, junk food, drink, ipad, etc.

1時間、2時間、期待とは裏腹に、何も起こらない。。。 – One hour, then two hours passed by but nothing had happened.  I expected to see a lot of action.  What’s wrong???

曇り空で寒い。だからかな。 – Is it because it was a cold, cloudy day?

3時間ほど粘った後、諦め掛けていたら、来た！ – I had almost given up after three hours when it came!

さすが、画質がグッとアップしてます。 – Indeed, the quality is much better.

曇りの日でもディテールまで綺麗に撮れる。ウレシい〜！ – I can see good detail in the images even on a cloudy day.  Isn’t that great?

しばらく忙しそうなミソサザイ達、そして彼らを追いかける私も忙しい。 – Bewick’s wren will be busy for a while, and I will be too, following them.

春の別荘 – Second House for Spring

これが春の別荘です。- This is the second house for Spring.

ここで産卵予定のシロハラミソサザイのご夫婦です。 – This is the Bewick’s wren pair who decided to lay their eggs here.

「そう、それそれ、早く持って来て！」と奥さん。”Yes, that’s it.  Bring it up here quick!” said the wife.

「フカフカ綿毛を見つけるのは、結構大変なのわかってくれてるのかなぁ。」と、ご主人。- “I am not sure if she knows how hard it is to find fluffy fuzz-balls like this.” said the husband.

「はい、これでいい？」 – “Does this work?”

「産卵準備は本当に大変。もう時間あまりないの。」と、奥さん。”Nest making is a huge project for us.  We don’t have much time left.” said the wife to me.

「それは大変。ストレス溜まっていそうですね。顔の周りや、口の中まで綿毛が付いてますよ。少し休む時間があるといいですね。」と、私。- “That sounds tough.  You look quite stressed.  A few strings of fuzz are around your face and inside your mouth.  I hope you have time to rest a little.”

 

 

毛皮コート – The coat

「暖かそうなコートですね。お出かけですか、トウヒさん？」 – “What a great looking coat! It must be very warm. Are you going out somewhere, Ms. Abert’s Towhee?”

「ご主人もいらしたんですね。」 – “Oh, her husband. You are here, too?”

「もう暖かくなって来たから、冬のコートはいらないって言ったんだけど、彼女のお気に入りだから仕方がない。」- “Yes. I told her that it’s already warm so she doesn’t need to wear the winter coat.  What can I do, that’s her favorite coat.”

 

鳥の抜け殻？ – Bird Husk?

去年のセミの抜け殻が木の下に、一つ、二つ、それから、？　鳥の抜け殻？？？　- Under a tree branch, one, two, two cicada husks.  And what is this?  Is it a bird husk?

「冗談も酷すぎ！」と、シロハラミソサザイ。 – “That’s not funny!” said Bewick’s wren.

「ゴメン、ゴメン！」と、私。「でも、何してるの？」 – “Sorry, but what are you doing?” said me.

「ガールフレンドと家探し。今、忙しいんだ。オホン。」 – “I am so busy now because I need to find a house and a girl for me.  Ahem.”

「ら、ら、ら〜」 – ” La la la ~”

そっか、奥さん探しと家探し、そりゃ忙しい。こちらが検討されていた物件です。10 年ものですがモダンなスタイルで安全です。引っ越して来られることを期待しましょう。 – Looking for a spring home and your future wife?  Now I know why you are so busy.  By the way, this is the house the wren was considering to move in.  It’s 10 years old, but the style is modern and most of all, safe.  I hope he will take it.

それにしても、和名の「シロハラミソサザイ」は、どういう理由でそう名付けられたんでしょうね。勿論、お腹は白いんだけど、そもそも鳥研究家で有名なオーデュボンさんの友達のビーウィック(Mr. Bewick) という方の名字をとって命名されたんだから、そのまま使った方がいいんじゃないの？と、つぶやいて見ました。 – But I wonder why Japanese name is “Shirohara misosazai (white belly wren)”.  It has white belly indeed, but the name came from Mr. Bewick who is a friend of John James Audubon (the famous ornithologist).  I want to keep Mr. Bewick’s name in there.  I just wanted to say it although no one care my opinion…

虫取りサービス – Bug Catching Service

うれしいニュースです。アメリカツリスガラが裏庭にやって来たんです。- Good news!  A verdin has visited us in our backyard.

今年1月にスッキリと剪定したバラの枝に舞い降りて来ました。- It landed on a rose branch I nicely pruned in January.

しかも、ご夫婦での訪問です。- Better than just one, it was a pair.

今年はやっぱりついていると思いつつ、さらなる観察をして見ました。どうやら、バラが好きみたい。何か食べてるみたいなんですね。- It is indeed a good year for me.  As I observed them more, I have discovered that they especially like rose bushes for some reasons.  It seems they are eating something.

もしや、これは、虫？ – Could it be “a bug?”

やっぱり！ – It is, indeed!

ピンクのサークル内にご注目。アブラムシが葉っぱについています。- Pay attention to the aphid bug inside the pink circle.

パクッ！- Gulp!

葉っぱにはもうついていません。食べちゃったんですね。- The bug is gone, eaten by the Verdin.

これは嬉しい！アメリカツリスガラに虫退治をしてもらえるとは思ってもいませんでした。- How lucky I am!  I never imagined that I could get a free bug catching service by Verdins.

昨日、今日、彼らを見かけていません。もうアブラムシはいなくなっちゃったんでしょうか。でも、影になり、日向になり、きっとバラの虫管理をしっかりしていてくれると思います。- I didn’t see them yesterday or today.  I wonder if they have eaten all the bugs already.  But I am sure they are on the job whether we are watching or not.

 

賢い鳥 – Smart Bird

賢い鳥とされるオナガクロムクドリモドキのメスを湖畔で発見しました。 – I have found a female Great-tailed Grackle by the shore of a lake.  It’s considered to be one of the smart birds.

何でも食べる雑食の鳥で、よく見かけます。この日はカニを発見したようです。- They eat everything and can be found very commonly.  It looks like she has found a crab today.

Wikipedia によると、120年間に5500% も繁殖範囲を拡大しているそうです。賢いからでしょうかねぇ。Corina Logan さんがUCサンタバーバラにて 行動柔軟性の実験のビデオは有名です。研究論文は発表されていますが、さらなる検証が期待されているようです。Loganさんのウェブサイト。- Their breeding area has expanded quite a lot, 5500% between 1880 to 2000 according to Wikipedia.  Is it because they are smart?  Corina Logan’s videos about behavioral flexibility studies with them at UC Santa Barbara are well known.  She has published several research papers, but more research is needed to confirm her conclusions.  Here is her website.

春のシンボル – Symbol of Spring

北カリフォルニアに住んでいた頃は、毎年春先になると庭にたくさん来てくれたロビン（コマツグミ）。春を告げて幸せを呼ぶ鳥とされています。St. George に引っ越して来てから、初めての春、まだ見かけてないんですよね。これから来るのかな？ – Many American Robins visited our garden in the early Spring every year when we lived in Northern California.  Robins are known to be a symbol of Spring and happiness.  This is our first Spring in Saint George,  I haven’t seen them yet.  I wonder if they will migrate here soon.

その代わり、別の春と幸せを呼ぶ鳥、ツバメを発見しました。日本語名はわかりません。　Northern Rough-Winged Swallow です。そこで尋ねて見ました。- However, I have found another symbolic bird for Spring and happiness, the Norther Rough-Winged Swallow.

「春だよ〜、春だよ〜！」と、ツバメ。-“Spring…!  Spring has come!!!” said the swallow.

「ツバメさん、春を告げてくれてありがとう。ロビンさんを見かけませんでしたか？」- “Thank you, Mr. Swallow for telling us that Spring has come.  Have you seen Mr. Robin by any chance?”

「わからないなー。多分見てない。」 – “I don’t know.  Maybe I haven’t seen him yet.”

「じゃあ、会ったらこっちの方にも来てくれるよう、伝えてください。」- “Would you tell him to come over here when you meet him?”

「わかった。でも、この空、見て。広いからどうかな。春だよ〜！」- “OK, but look at this sky.  It’s so big.  The chance is slim to see him.  Spring!  Spring has come!”
