初めて君に出会った時のことは忘れない。　I will never forget the first time I met you.

私たちが近くにいることを察して、頭や手足を甲羅の中に縮めてじっとしていました。でも、しばらくするとゆっくり、歩き始めました。みんなが言う通り、とってもゆっくりと。 Sensing our presence nearby, you curled up your head and limbs inside your shell and remained still. But after a while, you slowly began to walk. Just as everyone said, you moved very slowly.

ただ、驚いたのはその後です。少し先まで行って同じ場所まで帰ってきたのは30分後です。君を探して辺りを見回しましたが見つかりません。「当たり前だよね。いるわけないか。」と諦めて崖の上の方を見上げると、なんと、君がいた。 However, what surprised me was what happened next. We walked a little further and returned to the same spot 30 minutes later. I looked around for you but couldn’t find you. “Of course,” I thought, giving up, and looked up at the top of the cliff, and there you were.

依然としてゆっくりと歩いていた姿に感動しました。イソップ寓話のカメを思い出したのでした。 I was moved by the sight of him still walking slowly. It reminded me of the tortoise in Aesop’s fable.

私はイソップ寓話の中の自信過剰で放漫なウサギでした。 I was like the overconfident and careless rabbit in Aesop’s fable.

仕事柄、私は小さなことを気に留めることなく猛スピードで走り続けてきました。目標達成のためなのだから仕方がないと切り捨てた事や人はどれほどあるのでしょう。そうすることで多くの繊細な人たちを傷つけてきました。 Due to the nature of my work, I have continued to rush forward at full speed without paying attention to small details. How many things and people have I dismissed as not important enough in order to achieve my goals? By doing so, I have hurt many sensitive people.

道端の石ころがこんなに美しい物だったことに気がついたのは、つい最近です。たくさんの成分が凝縮されて美しい模様を作り出していたんです。そんなことに気づけるようになって、本当によかった。走るんじゃなく、ゆっくり歩いてこそ見えてくる物がたくさんあるんですね。 I only recently realized how beautiful the stones on the side of the road are. They are made up of many different elements that combine to create beautiful patterns. I’m so glad I’ve come to notice this. There are so many things you can see when you walk slowly instead of running.

だから、ゆっくりと、それぞれの一歩を大切にしたい。 That’s why I want to take each step slowly and carefully.

ブタの天国 The Heaven Of Pigs

ネバダ州のオーバートンにある、非営利団体、Windy’s Ranch & Rescue に行ってきました。　We visited Windy’s Ranch & Rescue, a non-profit organization in Overton, Nevada.

ゲートが開いた途端に、動物たちが近寄ってきました。 As soon as the gate opened, the animals approached us.

犬たちも20匹以上はいたと思いますが、それ以上に小豚たちの歓迎に戸惑いました。こんな光景、初めてでしたから。 I think there were more than 20 dogs, but I was even more bewildered by the welcome from the little pigs. I had never seen such a scene before.

ここはレスキューセンターなので、ありとあらゆる動物が保護されています。すべてが飼いきれなくなって放棄された動物です。 This is a rescue center, so all kinds of animals are sheltered here. They are animals that were abandoned because their owners could no longer keep them.

オーナーのジャニスさんにブタの数を聞いたら「最近数えてないけど、多分200頭ぐらいかな。」と、おっしゃっていました。 When I asked Janice, the owner, how many pigs she had, she said, “I haven’t counted them recently, but maybe 200.”

小さいサイズのブタから大きいものまで、様々です。 There is a large range of sizes of the pigs.

私は少し怖がって、2-3回撫でただけでしたが、ジャニスさんが降り注ぐ愛情の深さ、大きさに感動しました。 I was a little scared and only petted pigs 2-3 times, but I was impressed by the depth and magnitude of the love Janice showered down on them.

こちらは、寄付してくださった方々への感謝の掲示だと思われます。 This is supposed to be a “Thank You” posting for those who donated.

国や州からの寄付はないので、個人、寄付に頼って成り立っています。だから、いつも経営難ではないかと思われます。この日も、一人、ボランティアの方がフンの掃除をしていました。 There are no donations from the government or the state, so they rely on individuals and donations to make it work. So it always seems to be in financial difficulty. On this particular day, one volunteer was cleaning up poop.

ブタはもちろん、犬、猫の数も半端ではありません。その他、ヤギ、七面鳥、エミューなどもいました。 The number of pigs, as well as dogs and cats, is beyond measure. Other animals include goats, turkeys, and an Emu.

そして、もう1匹、忘れてはならないリクガメがいました。ケヅメリクガメというそうです。 And there was one more tortoise that I must not forget. It is an “African Spurred Tortoise.”

最初は、まさか生きているとは思えなかったほど、地面の中にいましたが、出てきてくれました。 I didn’t think it was alive at first glance because it was so far in the ground. But it came out.

甲羅の直径が1メートル近くありました。まだ90年ぐらい生きるそうです。　The shell was 3 feet (1m) in diameter. Wendy said that it still will live about 90 more years.

敷地内の木には鳥もたくさんいました。アカオノスリの夫婦が巣の上にいたので、これからの季節にそなえていたのでしょう。 There were also many birds in the trees on the property. A couple of red-tailed hawks were on their nest, probably preparing for the coming season.

ミヤマシシドも群れをなして飛び回っていました。朝夕には地面が見えなくなるほどの大群がやってきて食事を楽しんでいるとのことでした。 White-crowned Sparrows were also flying around in flocks. We were told that in the morning and evening, such a large flock comes to the site that the ground is covered by them completely. They enjoy their meals for the day there.

帰り際、孵化したばかりの10羽以上の鶏の雛をもらうため、みんなでひなの追いかけっこをしました。私たちではなく、私たちのトレーナーがご近所さんと手分けして育てるためです。 On the way home, we all chased the chicks to get more than 10 newly hatched chicks. Not for us, but for our trainer to split with her neighbors to raise them.

ほっくりと、温かい早春の1日でした。 It was a warm and relaxing early spring day.

去年の春から秋にかけてリクガメの生存調査のボランティアをしました。　We volunteered last spring to fall as a research volunteer for the survival study of the tortoises.

なぜかというと、最近、観光のため荒れ果てた荒野まで開拓していこうという動きが活発化しています。具体的には、私たちの家の近くのBLM (The Bureau of Land Management　国土管理局)　の管轄下の土地に観光用の道路を通すことを検討中であると聞いたからです。リクガメが危ない。 The reason for this is that recently there has been a growing movement for tourism to open up even the most desolate wilderness areas. Specifically, we have heard that the BLM (The Bureau of Land Management) is considering to designate an off-road trail to a major recreational tourist road through the land under their jurisdiction near our house. The tortoises are in danger.

そこで https://conserveswu.org (ユタ州の南西部を保護する会 ) の下、私達はリクガメの大切な居住地であることを証明するために調査し始めました。 So under https://conserveswu.org (Conserve Southwest Utah), we began researching to prove that this is an important habitat for the recluse tortoises.

まず、リクガメの巣だろうと思われる場所探し、そこにモーションセンサーで動作するカメラを設置しました。全部で10機ぐらい。そして、1ヶ月に一回メモリーカードを取り替え、その後、その結果の写真をリビューして報告しました。 First, we looked for a place that would be the burrow of a tortoise, and installed a camera that works with a motion sensor there. About 10 units in all. Then, we replaced the memory card once a month, and after that, we reviewed and reported the resulting pictures.

広大な土地に出かけて行って、カメラを設置したり、メモリーカードの交換などはたいしたことではありませんでした。 It was no big deal to go out into the vast expanse of land to set up cameras and change memory cards.

でも、写真のリビューと報告プロセスは、半端じゃなく忍耐力が必要な物でした。今回、初めてこのような調査、観察活動に参加して、大変な仕事だなぁとつくづく思いました。 But the photo-review and reporting process was something that required enormous patience. This was my first time participating in such a survey and observation activity, and I really felt that it is a tough job.

20,000 – 30,000 枚の写真に何が写っているのかを精査して、スプレッドシートに書き込んでいくわけです。それがリクガメが写っていのなら意欲も出ますが、私がリビューしたカードには、60％は風によって動いた草、30％がカンガルーラット、残りの10％がジリスと鳥が写っていただけで、リクガメは0％という悲惨な結果でした。 So you scrutinize 20,000 – 30,000 photos to see what is in them and write it all down on a spreadsheet. If it was a tortoise, I would be motivated, but on the cards I reviewed, 60% had wind-driven grass, 30% had kangaroo and wood rats, the remaining 10% only had ground squirrels and birds, and a dismal 0% had tortoises.

眠くなりそうなほどの膨大で単調な作業は、苦しかったです。 The enormous and monotonous work was agonizing to the point of drowsiness.

4年前、この土地に移り住んだ頃、道端を歩いていたのを目撃しています。当然たくさん生息しているはずですが、減少しているのかもしれません。 When we moved here 4 years ago, we saw them walking along a dirt. Naturally there should be many inhabiting the area, but they may be declining.

私達は1匹も見ることができませんでしたが、他のボランティアたちはたくさん目撃したようです。その結果、予算が降りて、今年もプロジェクトが続くことになりました。Although we didn’t see any tortoises, other volunteers saw plenty. Therefore, the project will continue to be funded for this year.

明日の出店　Tomorrow’s Market

今日、走りましたが、8kmぐらい走ってばてました。ただ、リクガメ君が道路を横断している所に居合わせて、嬉しくなりました。車に轢かれないように、しばらく見守っっていました。　Today, I ran, but I was pretty tired so I stopped running after about 8 km. However, I was happy to see a tortoise crossing the road. We waited a while for it to cross the road to make sure it was not run over by a car.

さて明日、また土曜日のマーケットにお店出します。　Well, tomorrow I will be back to set up our booth at the Saturday market.

新しいアイテムも加えたり、お値段もまた更に検討したりしていたら、1週間があっという間に経ってしまいました。まだ準備することは山ほどあるんですが、焦らずに行きます。　A week has flown by as I was adding new items and further examining prices again. There are still so many things to do, but I decided that I am not in a hurry.

先週の土曜日のマーケットに出店を出しましたが、売り上げゼロでした。2回目ということもあり、それなりに準備したつもりでしたが、予想外の結果となりました。 We participated at last Saturday’s market but made zero sales. This was the second time, and I thought I had prepared accordingly, but the result was unexpected.

8×8インチ、5×5インチ、そして3.75インチのコースターの3種類の大きさの写真を取り揃えました。 Three sizes of photos are available: 8×8″, 5×5″, and 3.75″ coasters.

納得できず、参加されていた5人の写真家さん全てに、売り上げを聞いてまわりました。驚くことに、5人の方全員が私と同じように何も売れなかったという回答でした。 Unsure how to interpret it, I went around to all five participating photographers and asked them about their sales. To my surprise, all five responded that they had sold nothing, just as I had.

バンちゃんと二つのテントをシェアしてます。私の作品は主に右のテーブル二つ。 I share two tents with Banchan. My works are mainly the two tables on the right.

波があるから、気にせず次週に期待すればいいだけだと励まされました。競争相手ではあるけれど、なんとなく苦しい時を一緒に乗り越えていく同志のような親近感が生まれてきて、嬉しくなってしまいました。 They encouraged me saying that it comes in waves, so I should just not worry about it and hope for the next week. Although we are competitors, I somehow began to feel a sense of closeness with them, as if we were comrades who were going through a difficult time together, which made me happy.

この出店ビジネスは出費ばかり嵩んでまだ軌道に乗っていないんですが、まあ、いい人たちといい環境に恵まれて、結構楽しいです。きっとそのうちにうまくいく事を信じます。 This business is still not on track due to all the expenses, but I am blessed with good people and a good environment, and I am having a lot of fun. I am sure it will work out in time.

Toe Trail

雲が流れている日に Toe というトレイル を歩いた。  – We hiked the Toe trail in a day that clouds were moving in the sky.

Ivinsという隣町からTuacahnという野外劇場への道に抜ける Toe という短いトレイル。バンちゃんの背中の手術後の経過を待ちながら少しづつ体力作りができたらいいと願う。  – The trail is a short trail that starts from Ivins and leads to the road to get to the Tuacahn Theatre.  After Banchan’s back surgery,  we are patiently waiting for the recovery.  The recovery is slow but his physical strength is better day by day.

このトレイルで陸ガメがよく見られるというウワサを聞いて、今回で2回目。でも、シンとしてカメどころか鳥もあまり見かけなかった。冬眠に入る前に見たかったけど、もう時間切れでしょうか。  – It’s been said that tortoises have seen on this trail.  So it was the second attempt for us, but unfortuanatly we had no luck seeing any tortoises.  Actually there weren’t very many animals at all. It was simply very quiet.   I am afraid we will run out of time before the tortoises go down deep in the ground for hybernation this year.  

雲の隙間から流れ出る太陽の光、それを受けた稜線は輝き、空高く導かれていた。 – Beams of sunshine breaking through the clouds shined down on the ridge.  It was as if those beams of sunshine were coaxing the ridge higher and higher into the sky.

久しぶりのランドスケープ写真と散歩、のどかに過ぎました。It was simply peaceful.  We casually walked and stopped from time to time to take landscape pictures.  The time passed by very quietly.
