ザイオン国立公園に向かう途中に必ず目撃するゴツゴツとした岩山は、ワシが住む岩山として知られています。 The craggy rocky mountains that you are sure to see on your way to Zion National Park are known as Eagle Crags.
距離は9.5km、標高差は368m。ゴツゴツとした岩場を登っていきました。 The hiking distance was 5.85 km and the elevation gain was 1,200 feet. We climbed up rugged, rocky terrain.
ザイオン国立公園の岩山を眺める場所で休憩です。 We took a break at a place with a view of the rocky looking mountains of Zion National Park.
ハイクリーダーが、その後、ますます険しくなる道のりを説明しているところです。 The hike leader explained to us about the increasingly rugged path from then on.
結局、この岩の麓まで登り、引き返してきました。ここから先はまさに岩登りになるからです。 In the end, we climbed up to the foot of this rock and turned around, because from this point onward, it would be a difficult rock climb needing ropes.
もう夏かと思わせる暑さで、野草は嬉しそうでした。It was so hot that one would think it was already summer. The wildflowers looked happy.
気ままに一人で歩きたくなって、他の人たちがガイドツアーをしていある間、気ままに一人でトレイルを散策しました。 While other people were taking the guided tour of the park, I wandered around and explored on my own.
雨に濡れて、野草が美しい。10種類ほどの植物の写真を撮ました。その中から、２種、ここに載せます。The wild flowers and plants were so pretty in the rain. I took about 10 different plant pictures. But for now, I want to show you two of them.
シトカ カノコソウです。小さな花を花束のようにたくさん付けて、雨で暗くなった空の下、白さが際立ち魅せられます。 This is Sitka Valerian. Under the dark rain clouds, the clustered tiny white flowers stand out.
近寄って見ると、雨の滴が落ちそうで落ちない。なんだか私の心を温かくしてくれました。 When I looked closely, I found rain drops had almost fallen down but were still there. Such a sight made my heart warm.
花が散った後には、こんな丸いものがついています。これは花の実でしょうか？この花は、アラスカから南はカリフォルニアまでの高原地帯に咲いているそうです。 After the flowers fell off, it formed dark purplish round things like in the picture below. Are they fruits or seeds? This flower lives on high mountain ranges from Alaska to California.
こちらはアラスカの野草、チシマフウロです。ゼラニウムの一種ですが、高山に生息します。雨の中だと花はみんなより綺麗に見えます。 This is an Alaskan wildflower, the Woolly Cranesbill. It is in the Geranium family and lives in high mountains. It’s magical that the rain transforms all the flowers to be even more beautiful.
雨水が無数に生えた毛に付いて、美味しそう。 Is it strange to say that it looks yummy, like a candy with rain drops on the tiny hairs on the flower buds?
散策中、ピョンピョン飛んだり歩いたり、私の歩く後をついて来てくれたキガシラシトドです。一緒に花の観察をしてくれて、ありがとう！ This is a Golden-crowned sparrow. It hopped and walked, and followed me while I was wandering around. Thank you for observing flowers together with me!
セイントジョージでは摂氏43度を超える暑さが続いてます。そこでシーダーブレイク国定公園に涼みに出かけました。It’s been over 110F these days in St. George. So we went to Cedar Breaks National Monument to enjoy the cool air.

すでにピークは過ぎているものの、野生の花が広がる高原は清々しかったです。It was slightly past peak for the wildflowers at Cedar Breaks NM, but the remaining open field full of wildflowers refreshed my soul.

何故でしょうか。野草は私を優しく包んで心を暖かくしてくれました。I don’t know why, but wildflowers gently wrapped me like a blanket, and warmed my soul.
先週金曜日にシーダーブレイクス国定公園で野草フェスティバルがあったので、すでにピークは過ぎていましたが、行って来ました。- We went to the Wildflower Festival at Cedar Breaks National Monument on Friday last week. The peak of the wildflower season had passed, but it was still nice.
特別な催しがあるわけではなく、野草ビンゴの花を求めて散策するというものでしたが、楽しかったです。- There wasn’t any special organized event. People simply walked around the park and, based on the Wildflower Bingo sheet shown below, marked off flowers you saw. But it was surprisingly fun.
Oregon Fleabane を見落としましたが、他は全てカバーしました！以下、私バージョンのビンゴシートですが4枚の代用写真があります。- We missed Oregon Fleabane but we covered all other items. The pictures below show my version of the bingo sheet where I had replaced four items.

これだけの野草の名前を覚えたら、これからのハイキングがもっと楽しくなりますよね。- If I could memorize all these flower names, it will make my hiking even more fun.
ところで、ハイマツとトウヒの区別ができてなくて、前回のブログでも逆に名前をつけてました。でも、今回のビンゴゲームで少し学習できたようです。ハイマツの松かさは上に付き、トウヒは下に付きます。幹も横と縦など、違いが少しわかるようになりました。- By the way, I mixed up Subalpine fir with Engelmann Spruce in my previous blog and labeled them backwards. With this bingo game, I studied more the differences between these two. For example, pine cones grow upwards on Subalpine fir and downwards on Engelmann spruce. And the tree trunks also have horizontal lines on Subalpine fir and vertical lines on Engelmann spruce.
