朝起きたらビーバーダム山脈方面に雪が積もっていました。I found the snow covered Beaver dam mountains when I woke up.

さっそく私のカメラ、キャノン EOS R5 で雪山を撮るぞ！とカメラを構えたら、なんか変。設定操作ができない！シャッターは押せてもLCDスクリーンで見ることも出来なければ他の設定が全て不能になっていました。Of course, I had to take pictures of it. So I grabbed my camera, Canon EOS R5, and tried to capture them, but felt something wrong. I couldn’t change the camera settings at all. All I could do was to push the shutter release button. That was it.
携帯ショット A cellphone shot
先週のザイオンの東での脱出不能事故から無事救助された事、本当にありがたく思ってます。私たちの命さえ無事なら、それだけでいいと思いました。でも、今私のカメラが壊れてしまった事に気づいて、かなりショックです。命さえ無事ならいいと思ったのにね。We were rescued from our four-wheel drive adventure east of Zion last week. I know the reason the camera didn’t work was because of this. I am so grateful that we came out ok and I did not ask anything more than our lives being safe. But now I found my camera is not working at all. I am so depressed from it although I still remember I did not ask for anything more at the time.
さっそく修理してもらう事にしました。無事に帰って来られるかな。キャノンさん、どうぞ私のカメラを救助してください！ Of course, we shipped it to the Canon repair facility immediately. I really hope they can fix it. Please Mr. Canon, rescue my camera!
鳥の写真を撮りにザイオン国立公園の東側の地帯に一泊二日のステイケーションの予定でしたが、二泊三日になってしまったお話です。This is originally a story of our one night two days staycation east of Zion National Park for bird photography. But the trip ended up as a two nights three days trip instead.

なぜならザイオンの東の山中、泥の中に車がはまり込み、出られなくなってしまったからです。登り道は景色も良く、道も乾いていていました。でも、そこから北側に移り、ちょっとまずいよと思った時には遅かった。そこから下り坂になり雪と泥、深い溝が走っていて、道とは言えない道になってしまいました。悪夢のようにスローモッションで泥の中をスキーしている感じ。 It is because our car was completely stuck in the mud on a dirt road in the hills east of Zion. We had gone up a nice, dry ridge with beautiful views. Then we went down a north facing slope. Uh oh! There was so much mud and snow, and the road, if you could still call it that, was full of deep ruts. Going down was more like slow motion skiing in mud.
そして、安全な道まであと1kmもないぐらいのところまで来た時に、ついに深い溝にはまり、出られなくなってしまいました。泥の坂道は前にも後ろにも行く事を阻み、ついに諦めて 911 番（日本での110番）に助けを求めるしか手がないと判断しました。その後はRamsey’ Towing の救助部隊と連絡を取り合うことになりました。Finally we got to a flat area with only half a mile to go to a good dirt road. But then we got caught in a deep ravine. We could not go forward and going back up the muddy slope looked impossible. Unable to get ourselves out, we called 911 for help. They got us in touch with Ramsey’s Towing.
救助部隊は私たちがどこにいるのかわからないので、私たちが泥の山道を歩いて降りてから合流しました。そこから私たちの車まで泥道を登るはずでしたが、なんと小川が流れていていた！地図にない！それでも黄色いレッカー車は川を越えようとしましたが、川にはまってしまい、断念。この状況を考え、この日は断念して、翌日、逆ルートからアプローチすることになりました。Since they weren’t sure how to get to us, we walked the last half mile to the good dirt road to meet the rescuers. Then we all went back for our car. Unfortunately, despite the fact that their cars are so much more robust and can do anything, we needed to give up that day because a creek was running across the road. The yellow tow truck tried to cross, but it ended up stuck in the water because it was too deep.
翌日夜明け前、バンちゃんだけがレスキュー部隊と出かけ、私はホテルで待機することに しました。地面がまだ凍っている間に脱出するという計画です。Dawn on the next day, Banchan went out with the rescuers and I stayed at the hotel. Their plan was to get there and come back up the muddy slope while the ground was still frozen.
救助を求めるまで、必死になって道を作ろうとしていたので、私たちは泥だらけ。ホテルに入る前に綺麗にしても取れなかった泥。Until we gave up and called the rescue service, we tried to fill in the ditch enough to get by, but it didn’t work. That effort just made us completely muddy. We tried to make ourselves decent before going inside the hotel, but the mud on the boots didn’t come off very well.
ホテルで待機中、何もすることがなかったのでブーツの泥落としをしたら綺麗になったブーツ。While I was waiting for Banchan and his car to return, I cleaned my boots because I had nothing to do.
9時過ぎ、バンちゃんが救助された車を運転してホテルに帰ってきました。救助部隊に感謝です。After 9 o’clock, Banchan, driving our car, came back to the hotel. We are so grateful for the rescuer’s excellent work.
幸い、バンパーや車の下の一部が剥がれたりしただけで、車自体は問題なかったようです。 We were so lucky that our car was all right with just some minor damage.
車を山道に置いて山道を歩いてきた時に持ってきたものは、自分が持てるだけの本当に大切な物だけ。水、食べ物、財布、そして携帯のみ。カメラ2台、レンズ5本、スーツケースにその他諸々はやっぱり本当に大切な物じゃないということかな。 When we left our car in the mountain, we needed to choose what to bring with us. Of course, I brought down absolutely essential stuff that I could carry by myself; water, food, wallet, and cell phone. I reluctantly left my two cameras, five lenses, suitcase, toothbrush, etc. Yes, they are not my most essential stuff although they are my most precious.
帰り間際に見上げた空。カナブの町では熱気球フェスティバルが行われていました。もう2度としたくないアドベンチャーから解放された安堵のせいか、熱気球は平和のシンボルのように見えました。I looked up the sky before we left the hotel in Kanab. They had a hot-air balloon festival going on that day. The balloons looked a symbol of peace to me because I was so relieved from the extreme adventure we just had.
夜明け前、ドスドスっという音で目が覚めた。いつもは開けてあるシェイドを開けてみると、ボブキャットの子供が窓のすぐ外をウロウロしていた。Thump Thump, the sound came from right outside our bedroom and woke me up. I raised the shades on the windows, and there I found a Bobcat cub going back and forth less than two feet away from me.
お母さんは朝ごはんのウサギを咥えていた。「カメラ〜！」と叫んでいる間にさっさと塀を飛び越えて行ってしまった。The cub’s mother had a rabbit in her mouth for their breakfast. It was so unexpected, that I shouted “Camera, Lenses~!” Of course, that’s exactly I shouldn’t have done. While I was running around like a crazy person, they hopped onto the backyard fence, and disappeared.
が、話はここで終わらない。 But, the story didn’t end there!
バスルームの窓の外、なんと、お母さんがまだウロウロしていた。という事は、子供がまだいるはず！Right outside of the bathroom window, the mother was still there with a concerned face. Does this mean what we hope? The cub should still be there.
右側が裏庭の塀。The backyard fence is on the right.
もしかして、また裏庭に入ってくるのかな？ Is she coming into the backyard again?
と、思ったら、木の上を見てる。But then, she is looking up into the tree.
という事は、子供は木の上？ Does this mean that the cub is on the tree somewhere? But where?
いた！勝手にボビィと命名した。Found him! I named him as Bobby then.
なんとまあ、夜明け前からこの騒動。もう、太陽の光が山上方をてらし始めてる。This all happened before dawn. Now the sunrise began and a strong sun started to illuminate the red rock hill.
お母さん、どうする？ボビィは木から降りられなくなったらしい。もう2時間も経ってるよ。What do you do, Bobby’s mom? It seems that Bobby can’t come down from the tree. It’s been two hours since he first climbed up.
窓の中から見ていた私たちですが、だんだん疲れてきたボビィの様子に、何とかしないとまずいと思い立つ。で、外に出てみることにしたら前庭でお母さんと出くわしてしまった。Bobby looked so tired. Shouldn’t we do something to rescue Bobby? We observed all these movements from inside windows but we decided to go out. But then, we encountered his mom right there at the front yard.
まずい！お母さんは一瞬も目を離さず私を凝視している。この距離、まずい！Oh no… She was staring at me without blinking. This doesn’t look good.
ソロリソロリと歩いて家の中に逃げ込んだ。さらに1時間が経過。状況に変化なし。バンちゃんは勇敢にも長い板を梯子の上に乗せて木に繋いだ。ボビィ、これで降りやすくなったかな？ Ever so slowly, and quietly, I returned to the house to take refuge. Banchan was so brave then. He carried out a ladder and wooden long board and set up a slope near the branch where Bobby was sitting. We hoped this will help Bobby to go down easily.
それでも何の進展もなっく4時間も経過したので、ユタ州の野生保護課に助けを求めることにした。こちらに向かっているレスキュー部隊と電話で話しているまさにその最中、「一人で降りて茂みの中に走って行ったよ！」というバンちゃんの声。Still, the situation didn’t change for four hours. I finally decided to call Utah’s Wildlife Rescue Division. I explained all the details to the person who was driving over to our house. But then, Banchan shouted, “the cub is down by himself!” while I was talking to the rescue person.
ボビィの足。やっぱり猫みたいにフカフカ。Bobby’s foot. It looks soft like a cat’s foot.
慌てて再確認をするために木の上を見に行ったらもうボビィはいなかった。I ran to the bathroom window and looked at the tree. And I found nothing there. Bobby had gone.
木の上から落ちそうになった時。小さい爪がフカフカの足から見えてる。これで必死に落ちるのを防いだのね。A shot when Bobby nearly fell down from the tree. Can you see his tiny claws? He held on to the tree so hard with those claws.
ボビィは木の上から降りられなくなったのか。それとも休憩してただけなのか。答えはボビィとお母さんだけが知っている。Here is a question. Was he in trouble and he really couldn’t come down, or was he simply resting there on the tree branches? No one knows the answer to this question but Bobby and his mother.
そんな早朝のサファリだった。It was a great safari adventure early in the morning.
