今朝の訪問者 A Visitor This Morning

寒くなりました。まだグズグズとベッドの中にいたら、バンちゃんの席立てる様な声が聞こえてきました。 It is getting to be cold these days. I was still dawdling in bed when I heard Banchan’s voice.

「早く、早く、裏庭にハイタカが来てるよ！」 “Come quick! A hawk is in the backyard!”

飛び起きてリビングルームに行くと、いた！ I jumped out from bed, and went to the living room. And I found it.

飛んでいってしまう前にと、レンズ交換もしないまま100mm レンズが付いているカメラを持って、そーっと窓際まで近づきました。 I didn’t want to miss the chance, so without changing the lens, I simply grabbed my camera which happened to have the 100mm prime lens attached, then I quietly hid myself behind a chair.

クーパーハイタカです。 It was a Cooper’s hawk.

多分、まだ幼鳥です。 It was still a juvenile.

窓ガラスを通してでも気づかれてしまい、さっさと飛び立って行ってしまいました。あと5秒居て欲しいと思う気持ちがあった反面、安心したのも事実です。まだ子供でも鋭い警戒心と洞察力を持っていたからです。 As soon as it noticed us even through the window glass, it flew away. Although I wanted it to hang around for only 5 more seconds, I felt relieved because it had keen perceptivity and vigilance even though it’s still a child.

「これから来る厳しい冬を頑張って乗り切るんだよ。来年、逞しい大人になった時、また会おう！ 」”You’ve got to pull through this harsh winter. Then meet us again in the next year when you become a strong adult!”

ハイタカの飛び立つ姿に、元気をもらいました。 The hawk’s strong take-off gave me energy.

40-44℃の猛暑です。 It’s been so hot! The high temperatures have been between 105-110°F .

それでも早朝の1-2時間は25℃ぐらいになるので、トレッドミルを卒業し、外を走る方がいいかと思っています。 For one to two hours in the early morning, however, it is still 78°F. So I could graduate from using the treadmill and go outside for my 10k training in the early morning.

動物たちも早朝の涼しい時に活動しています。こちらはハチドリの写真です。いいショットとは言えませんが、ウワッと驚いたので紹介します。 Wild animals are also active in the early morning. These are pictures of a hummingbird in the early morning. They aren’t good quality shots but I was so shocked to see them after I processed them.

ハチドリが口を大きく開けてます。 The hummingbird opened its mouth big.

ハチドリの口がさらに大きく開きました。花のネクターを吸い取る動作じゃない。 The mouth is now opened much wider. It is not the behavior for them when they suck nectar out from flowers.

えっ？よくわからない？じゃ、アップで。 What? You don’t see it, dear reader? Here is the close up.

虫の羽が嘴の先に見えてます。ハチドリは虫も食べる！ The wings of the bug are sticking out from the tip of the beak. Hummingbirds eat bugs as well!

アラスカ旅行記はあと数日で終了します。Alaska trip journal goes on for a few more days.

旅に出てから10日目、そしてあいにくの雨。この日はインディペンデンス金鉱州立歴史公園を訪れました。 It was the 10th day since the Alaska trip started, and it was raining. We visited Independence Mine State Historical Park on that day.

気ままに一人で歩きたくなって、他の人たちがガイドツアーをしていある間、気ままに一人でトレイルを散策しました。 While other people were taking the guided tour of the park, I wandered around and explored on my own.

雨に濡れて、野草が美しい。10種類ほどの植物の写真を撮ました。その中から、２種、ここに載せます。The wild flowers and plants were so pretty in the rain. I took about 10 different plant pictures. But for now, I want to show you two of them.

シトカ カノコソウです。小さな花を花束のようにたくさん付けて、雨で暗くなった空の下、白さが際立ち魅せられます。 This is Sitka Valerian. Under the dark rain clouds, the clustered tiny white flowers stand out.

近寄って見ると、雨の滴が落ちそうで落ちない。なんだか私の心を温かくしてくれました。 When I looked closely, I found rain drops had almost fallen down but were still there. Such a sight made my heart warm.

花が散った後には、こんな丸いものがついています。これは花の実でしょうか？この花は、アラスカから南はカリフォルニアまでの高原地帯に咲いているそうです。 After the flowers fell off, it formed dark purplish round things like in the picture below. Are they fruits or seeds? This flower lives on high mountain ranges from Alaska to California.

こちらはアラスカの野草、チシマフウロです。ゼラニウムの一種ですが、高山に生息します。雨の中だと花はみんなより綺麗に見えます。 This is an Alaskan wildflower, the Woolly Cranesbill. It is in the Geranium family and lives in high mountains. It’s magical that the rain transforms all the flowers to be even more beautiful.

雨水が無数に生えた毛に付いて、美味しそう。 Is it strange to say that it looks yummy, like a candy with rain drops on the tiny hairs on the flower buds?

散策中、ピョンピョン飛んだり歩いたり、私の歩く後をついて来てくれたキガシラシトドです。一緒に花の観察をしてくれて、ありがとう！ This is a Golden-crowned sparrow. It hopped and walked, and followed me while I was wandering around. Thank you for observing flowers together with me!

フェアバンクス Fairbanks

フェアバンクスは、冬ならきっとオーロラが見られる町です。7月は何が期待できるのでしょうか。 People come to Fairbanks to see the Aurora, a.k.a. the northern lights, in Winter. But in July, I am not sure what we should expect to see.

二日目、休憩所にて。何かが舞い降りてきました。もしや巨大な蚊？アラスカ州の鳥はカラフトライチョウですが、隠れ州鳥は蚊だとジョークを飛ばす人が多いほど蚊が多い所で有名です。 At one rest stop on the second day, we witnessed a flock of something coming down from the sky. Could they be mosquitos? Alaska’s state bird is the Willow Ptarmigan. But many people say it’s the Mosquito as a joke because there are so many of them and they are so large.

目を凝らして見ると、カナダヅルでした。渡り鳥ですから、カリフォルニアで見た鳥がここで見られてもおかしくありません。でも、こんな所まで飛行機に乗らずに飛んで来られるなんて、すごい生命力です。予期しなかったことでもあり、心を打たれました。 Looking at them closely, I realized that they were Sandhill cranes. I know that they are migratory birds, so they could be down south or north according to the season, but I was quite moved to see them there because my memory of them was when we were in California. Unlike us flying over here by airplane, they flew over here by themselves. What a life force!

実は、この日、心を打たれた事が他にもありました。でも、今日はここまで。 We had more activities on that day. But this is it for today. My time has run out.

まだ眠いズアカカンムリウズラ Sleepy Gambel’s Quail

まだ5cmもないぐらいのズアカカンムリウズラのヒナです。裏庭で産まれたようです。 This is an itsy bitsy Gambel’s Quail chick. It’s less than two inches long. I think it was born in our backyard.

まだ上手く歩けないのに、食べ物探しの散歩に出かけました。 The quail family went out for a breakfast walk although chicks couldn’t walk well yet.

まだ朝早いので眠たそう。ちょっと歩いただけで眠り込んでしまいます。 The chicks look still sleepy as it’s still early morning. They walked a little but already fall a sleep.

そんなところで寝込んで大丈夫なのかなと心配していたら、お父さんも心配して近寄ってきました。 I was worrying about this one sleeping in such an open space. Even it’s father came over to wake him up.

こっちの子はお母さんに見守られています。 Mother was keeping an eye on this one.

パティオの上は流石にまずいよ。早く目を覚まして隠れた方がいいよ〜！ Wait, that’s totally not a good place to sleep on the middle of the patio. Wake up~!

こっちの子たちも起きてね〜！ You guys, too. Wake up now~!

と、早く安全な場所に避難するように急き立てられて芝生のジャングルを歩くヒナたちでした。 So the parents rushed the chicks to a safe place urging them through the jungle of grass.

クーパーハイタカ Cooper’s Hawk

私たちの目の前に舞い降りたクーパーハイタカです。鳥の会の人たちによると、まだ成長しきってない幼鳥だそうです。 This is a Cooper’s Hawk. It is still a juvenile according to the Red Cliffs Audubon club people. It landed right in front of us.

まだ頭から首の辺りがまだ白いからだと言っていました。まだ目が赤くなっていないかも。 They said that it’s still white around the head and neck, and the eyes aren’t red enough. So it is a juvenile.

こちらは別の週に見たお母さんのクーパーハイタカです。 This is a fully grown mother Cooper’s Hawk. We saw it on a different day in a different place.

こうして比べてみると、わかります。 I can see the difference now by comparing them like this.

さて、この日はなんと、ヒナも目撃できました。もしかしたらヒナというにはもうちょっと成長しているような、でも、空を自由に飛び回れる幼鳥でもなさそうです。だから、ヒナとしておきます。 And now, we saw a chick near its mom on that same day as the adult hawk. Some people say it has already grown more than a chick. But I am not sure if it can fly out to the sky freely like a juvenile bird. So I say it’s a chick.

ちょっと観察してみましょう。まず、まだシッポが短い。白い産毛がまだフワフワ残ってる。また、背中の羽も生えてきただけで落ち着いてません。 Let’s observe it closely. First of all, the tail is so short. The second point is that it still has white baby feathers around the face and other body parts. And lastly, the feathers on the back are grown but they aren’t stabilized yet.

いや、それにしても可愛いですね。 At any rate, it is so cute!

おやおや？もう片足立ちできるんですね。もう飛べるのかなぁ？ Oh, my! It can stand on the branch by one leg already. Well, can it fly now then?

オリオール Hooded Oriole

水曜日の早朝は、レッドクリフ鳥の会の散策の日です。毎週違う場所の散策をします。面白いことに、2回連続で黄色い頭のオリオールが集合場所でお出迎えしてくれました。　Wednesday is Red Cliffs Audubon’s early morning bird watch day. We go to different places weekly. It’s funny that we were greeted by a Hooded Oriole on the last two Wednesdays consecutively at the meeting locations.

ひょっとして同じ鳥かなと思ったんですが、流石に違いますね。 I wished that they, miraculously, were the same bird, but unfortunately not.

ルリイカル2 Blue Grosbeak 2

先週、貴重なルリイカルを目撃しましたが、今週水曜日に再び発見することができました。しかも、家の近くで。 This past Wednesday, we again found the uncommon bird, the Blue Grosbeak. It was only one week earlier when we saw it for the first time. Not only that, this time we found it near our house.

水曜日の鳥の会の人たちのおかげです。一緒に鳥を探しに行くと、今まで見えなかったものが見えてくるから不思議です。This is thanks to Red Cliffs Audubon club people. It is amazing that we are seeing more birds every-time we go out with them.

隠れているつもりなんですよね。でもねぇ。。 I know you are hiding, but…

それにしても嘴が大きい。それが特徴の一つでもあります。 In any case, the beak is so large. It is the one of characteristics of the Grosbeak.

ルリイカル Blue Grosbeak

先週の早朝、バージンリバー沿いの茂みの中で見つけました。ルリイカルです。見つけにくいとされているだけに、とてもラッキーでした。 We found this bird in shrubs by the Virgin river in the early morning last Wednesday. It’s a Blue Grosbeak. I feel very lucky because it is one of the uncommon birds that is hard to find.

オスです。メスは可愛いのですが、茶色で、こんなに鮮やかな青色とはかけ離れています。繁殖期には、特に青くなるということなので、今がそんな時なのでしょう。This is a male. The female blue grosbeak is not blue at all. It is brown, but cute. The male’s blue color becomes especially blue during the breeding season. So, it must be the time.

昨日紹介したニシフウキンチョウとルリイカルは同じショウジョウコウカンチョウに属します。つまり、親戚同士です。そして、どちらの鳥も息を呑む美しさですね。 The Western Tanager that I talked about yesterday and the Blue Grosbeak are relatives. Both of them are in the cardinal family.

ニシフウキンチョウのオスです。きっと、一度見たら誰でも好きになる鳥。ザイオン国立公園のすぐ近くで見つけました。 This is the male Western Tanager. We found it near Zion National Park. I am almost sure that everyone will like this bird once you see it right in front of you.

「おっとー、行かないで！ 」 “Oh, no. Don’t go!”

「少しだけ、写真撮りに協力してください。」 ” Please cooperate with me only a little while to take pictures.”

「枝の向こうで隠れているつもりですか？バッチリ見えちゃってるんですけど。」 “Umm, do you think you are hiding from me behind the branch? I can see you totally.”

「そうそう、そんな風にポーズをとっていただけるとありがたいです。」”Yes, yes, that’s a nice pose. I like that.”

「わー、なんて美しい。これが今日のベストですね。ありがとう！」 “Yes, indeed, you are a photogenic. This is the best shot of the day. Thank you!”

チャイロコツグミ Hermit Thrush

「美しい鳴き声のチャイロコツグミさん、どうぞ歌をお願いします。」 “Mr. Hermit Thrush, please sing a song with your gorgeous voice.”

「あら、歌ってくださらないんですか？」 “What happened? Don’t you want to sing?”

「もう歌ってます。こんな風に大きく嘴を開けて歌うこともあるけど、口をあまり開けない方が綺麗な音が出るんですよ。」 “I am singing already. I open my beak wide open sometimes, but often, I don’t open my beak so much. My beautiful voice comes out better this way.”

「それは大変失礼しました。ところで、今歌ってますか？」 “I see. Sorry about that. By the way, are you singing now?”

「今、休憩中。」 “I am resting now.”

「なんか、紛らわしいですね。口を開ける時は、歌う時だけにしていただけるとありがたい。」 “Umm, it’s quite confusing. It’s much easier for me to know that you open your beak only when you sing.”

「今、歌ってますよねぇ？」「・・・」 “You are singing right now, right?” “. . . “
