ジェイク – Jake the Snake

金曜日の朝、玄関のベルがなり、庭師のデボンが立っていた。彼が挨拶とは珍しい。  – Our gardener, Devon, was standing there when we opened the front door on a Friday morning.  He rarely knocks on the door, so we wondered why.

「蛇が裏庭にいる。」 – “There is a snake in the back yard,” said he.

きゃ〜〜〜！大慌てでカメラを持ち出して、外に出た。 – What?  Really?!  We rushed out with our cameras.

ローズマリーからスルスルとでてくると Mr. Goo に向かってスルスル。速い！  – It came out from Rosemary bush and slithered toward Mr. Goo with pretty good speed.

カリフォルニア キングスネークです。体が伸びているところ。約 1.2 m ぐらいです。  – It is a California Kingsnake, about four feet by looking at the stretched body.

その後家の横に回り、私のオフィスの窓の前まで這って来ました。そこで驚くことが起こります。  – It went around the side of the house, and finally came to right outside of my office windows.  We then witnessed an amazing thing.

これは I.C.V. (Irrigation Control Valve) と言います。庭の水やりシステムの元栓が入っている筒が埋め込まれていて、その蓋の写真です。直径、約 15-16 cm で、小さな2.5cm ぐらいの穴が空いています。蓋を開けるときに指を差し込んで蓋を持ち上げるんですね。  – This is an I.C.V. (Irrigation Control Valve).  A small cylinder is embedded to protect the valve that controls the entire irrigation system.  The picture below shows the lid covering it.  It’s about 6 inches in diameter, and the finger hole is about 1 inch.

彼はなんと、その小さな穴に入り込み、姿を消してしまいました。うっそ〜！  – The shocking thing was that it went into the I.C.V. through the finger hole and disappeared completely! Unbelievable!!

そもそも、彼の体の横は 4 cm ぐらいだったような気がします。伸縮自在なんでしょうか。そして、I.C.V.の筒の中はすごーく狭いんです。この蛇がすっぽり入れるとはとても思えません。体が柔らかいということでしょうか。怖くていまだにI.C.V.を開ける勇気がありません。- First of all, the snake’s body was about 1.5 inches or more.  How in the world it can go through the hole.  On top of that, the inside of the cylinder is so tiny.  I really can’t believe that a snake with that size could fit in it entirely.  I am so afraid of opening it to verify the inside even now.

ところで、私たちはこの蛇をジェイクと名付けました。その後彼は姿を見せていませんが、なんとなく仕草が愛らしかったので、「ジェイク ザ スネイク」と呼ぶことにしました。  – By the way, we decided to call it “Jake the Snake” although we haven’t seen it since then.  His gesture and movement were somewhat humorous and cute.

見つけた！ – Found it!

見つけたものが二つあります。  – We have found two things.

一つは “MV Rock”。  – One of them is “MV Rock”.

毎日朝起きて最初に眺める景色の中心にある岩。いつも「あの岩の場所を探したいね。」と話していました。念願叶い、先日、ついに近くまで行って来ました。下の地図上、緑が歩いた山道。赤く囲んだ所がこの岩です。 – The rock is always the center of the view I see first thing in the morning.  We always said, “Let’s find where the rock is.”  A chance came to us the other day to go up there close to the rock.  On the map below, the green line is the trail we walked and the red circle is the rock.

ここは Red Cliffs Desert Reserve の一角です。ビジターセンターに行ってこの岩の名前を聞いたら、名前がないとのこと。そこで  “MV Rock” と名付けました。(MV は Majestic View の略）私たちの岩、ついに見つけた！  – It’s a part of Red Cliffs Desert Reserve.  We went to the visitors center and asked them what the name of the rock was.  To our surprise, they said it has no name.  So, we named it as “MV Rock” where MV stans for Majestic View.  Yes, we finally found our rock!

このベンチから、二番目の発見がありました。我が家が見えたんです！家から VM Rock が見えるということは、この丘の上から見えて当然なんですが、感激です。  – From this bench, we found the second discovery.  We found our house!  Of course, we can see our house from there as we see the rock from our house.  I am quite moved by it.

色々な顔を見せてくれる “MV Rock”。これからも新しい顔を見せてくれることでしょう。  –  MV Rock showed us many faces already, but I am sure it will show us more new faces in the future.

スコット – Scott

1週間前、気がつきました。いつからいたのか不明です。- We have realized it was there a week ago.  No one knows for sure how long it has been there.

彼はサソリです。スコットと名付けました。 – It is a scorpion.  We named it “Scott”.

これがスコットが今住んでいる噴水のジャバ。スターウォーズのジャバ ザ ハットに似ているので、そう名付けました。ジャバの周りではいろいろなことが起こり、一体どんな生物が住み着いているのか未だ不明です。  – This is the fountain, Jabba, where Scott lives.  The fountain looks like Jabba the Hutt in the Star Wars movie, so we named it that way.  Many things happen around Jabba, and no one knows how many different kinds of living things are living around it.

例えば、このカエル。どこにいるかわかりますか？　　- This frog for example, can you find where he is at?

スコットがウロウロしているのに、大丈夫なんでしょうか。  – Scott roams around there, too.  I hope the frog will be all right.

こちらの写真、有毒が出る黒い針が見えますね。 – Can you see the black stinger that releases venom?

ところで、サソリの目はどこにあるかご存知ですか？  – By the way, do you know where are Scott’s eyes?

顔の両側に黒い目がついているのはわかりますよね。驚くことに、頭の上にチョコンと二つ、外向きについているのがわかりますか？それも目なんです。ウィキペディアによると、サソリには両脇に 2-5 セットづつもあると言われています。  – Can you see two black dots on the front face?  Yes, they are eyes.  Can you also see the two tiny black dots at the very top of the head?  Believe it or not, they are also eyes.  According to Wikipedia, scorpions usually have two to five pairs of eyes along the front corners of the head although I can’t see so many eyes on Scott.

ある昼下がり・・・ One afternoon…

おや、鳥かな？  – Look! Is it a bird?

そーっと近寄って、目を凝らして見たらカクタスだった。-  I went closer quietly and focused my eyes.  Oh, it was a cactus.

カクタスも散歩するんだー。まだ100度を越える、暑い昼下がり。  –  I see.  A cactus also goes for walks.  It was above105 degree, a hot afternoon.

 

 

グランドキャニオン ノースリム – Grand Canyon NP North Rim

両手の回復期間に、まだ行ったことがなかったグランドキャニオン国立公園に行ってきました。
久しぶりの遠出で気分は高まります。とはいえ、ノースリムは家からほんの3時間。お弁当を持って日帰りのドライブでした。  – I went to Grand Canyon National Park while I was waiting for my hands to recover.  It took only three hours from home to get to the north rim, but it was exciting for me because it was my first time.

南側より高度が300 – 400 m 以上高いことや、コロラド川までのアプローチが長いことなどから、趣が少々違うようです。オリンピック国立公園に少し似ているような気がしました。道端の花や緑が綺麗でした。  – The north rim is more than 1000 feet higher than the south rim, and the approach distance to get to Colorado river is much longer than from the south rim.  I was informed that the impression is quite different.  My impression was similar to Olympic National Park because the flowers and greenery are similar on the way to get to the north rim.

ここで出会ったおばあちゃん。アラバマからご主人と一緒に初めて来てからもう17年。ご主人は亡くなってしまったけれど、犬と一緒に17回目の訪問だと教えてくれました。ここからの眺めが一番好きと言って写真を撮っていました。  – This is an old lady who I met there.  She came here with her husband 17 years ago.  Although he had passed away, she’s been here 17 times with her dog.  She told me that she likes the view from here the most.

コロラド川は、600 万年以上前からコロラド高原を深く削り続けてきたと言われています。その結果、何十億年も前からの地層が現れてきたんですね。北側からは遠くて肉眼ではほとんど見えません。でも、ほんの少し緑色の部分があるのがわかりますか？  – It’s been said that the Colorado river has been running through the Colorado Plateau since 6 million years ago carving the deep canyon.  Because of that, several billion years of strata has been revealed.  The river is too far from the north rim, so you almost can’t see it with naked eyes.  Can you see a tiny bit of green color in the picture?

400mm のレンズを使うとこんな風に見えて来ます。  – With 400mm lens, you can see the river like this.

畏敬の念、何十億年もの時を越える時。こうして地層を見るといつも思います。ちっぽけな自分。くよくよしないで自由に生きよう！  – I am filled with awe, looking down through the layers of sedimentary rock bringing my imagination all the way back to several billion years ago.  It also makes me aware that I am so insignificant over the history of the earth. It tells me to just live and be the way I am without worrying about little things.

バーコードになった – Barcoded

書きたいことは山ほどあるのに、まだ手が使えません。  – I have so many subjects to write about, but I still can’t use my hands for it.

医者通いの毎日、バーコード化されました。  – Instead, going to see doctors every day, I am barcoded.

バカなことを書きますが、手も体も大切にしよう！ – It’s even silly to say this, but I want to remind myself.  Take care of the hands and body well!

ロードランナーがやって来た！　- Roadrunner has Come!

野良仕事のやりすぎで、両手が腱鞘炎になってしまいました。だからドクターストップ。手を使わないこと。料理も、タイプも、できない。カメラなんて冗談じゃなく持てません。  – Unfortunately, I have gotten tendonitis on the fingers of both hands due to working in my garden so much.  So my doctor ordered me not to use my hands for a while, including cooking, typing, etc.  Of course, holding camera is also not allowed.

そんな私の裏庭に、ナント、今日、ロードランナーが来てくれたんです！！！  – Poor me… but surprisingly, a roadrunner came over to my backyard today!!!

そんなの見たらじっとして入られません。カメラ〜。  – Of course, I can’t let such an opportunity go by without my camera.

何か見つけたようです。まだ行かないでね〜！  – It seems it found something.  Please don’t go so soon!

あー良かった。探し物は芝の中にあるようです。この瞳。すごい視力のはずですよね。 – Thank goodness!  The treasure he is looking for is in the lawn.  Its eyes must see things so well.

まつ毛が長い！  –  Wow, such long eyelashes!

そこまで潜っちゃうの？  – Is it so deep in the ground?

どーもー。スナックタイム。  – Yay!  A nice snack?

その後、スクッと塀の上に飛び乗り次のスナックが見えているようです。  – After that, it stood on the fence and looked far away as if to see its next snack.

「じゃーね〜！また来る。」と、言ったことにしよう。　- “See you later alligator, afterwhile crocodile…” said the roadrunner.

どっちが頭？ – Which End is the Head?

ガレージの入り口でナナフシを見つけました。でも、どっちが頭かな？  – A Walking stick insect was on the garage wall.  Which end is the head?

どうやら頭がわかって来ました。足が6本、それから長い鼻かな、アンテナかな？  –  I am getting to understand where the head is.  Let’s see, there are 6 legs, and a long nose or antennas?

顔の拡大を見てみると・・・まだ、口のあたりがどうなってるのかよくわからないですねぇ。  – The enlarged view of the face.  Hmm, I still can’t identify the mouth function well.

細い足の先は、こんなになっていて、どこにでもぶら下がることができそうですね。  – The tip of its legs are like this, and they allow the Walking stick insect to hang onto any surface.

エコロジストによると、ナナフシのフンは環境維持に大切だそうです。ロボット開発者はナナフシの6本足の研究は大切だと言います。なぜなら、ナナフシは自分の40倍もの重量を6本の足で運搬できからだそうで、6本足ロボットに活用できないか研究されています。  – According to ecologists, the droppings from the stick insects are important for maintaining the eco-system well. According to robot developers, it could be useful to study their six-legged mechanism because a walking stick insect can carry 40 times its own weight, and the knowledge could be applied to robots.

この鳥はもしかして・・・  – Could it be…?

この鳥たちは、もしかしてまだ赤ちゃんなのかな？  – Could these be babies…?

Western Kingbird ニシタイランチョウ です。裏庭の木の上で見つけました。  – They are Western Kingbirds.  We found them on a tree in the backyard.

おや？すごい勢いで鳴き始めました。  – What happened?  They started chirping so loudly.

あー、やっぱり。お母さんが食べ物を捕まえて来てくれたんですね。  – I see… Their mother brought back food for them.

おっとっと。落ちないように気をつけて。  – Wow, be careful not to fall down.

やった〜。ランチタイムね。今日のメニューは何かな？  – Yeah!  It’s lunchtime.  What’s the menu for today?

大きなトンボみたいだね。  – It looks like a gigantic dragonfly.

美味しそう。  – Yummy!  

あれ？もう一羽の子にはないの？  – Wait a minute. What about the other one?  

後でもらえるのかなぁ？もらった方の子はもう、食事の後のお昼寝タイムに入ったというのに。  – Can it get a bug later? The other one got food already and now is napping.

ちょっとかわいそう。「お腹すいたよ〜！」と鳴いているのでしょうか。お母さんもお昼寝タイムに入っちゃったのかな？  – Oh, it isn’t fair.  It is crying saying “Hungry… give me a bug…”  Hmm, their mother also started napping.

そこで逞しいニシタイランチョウの赤ちゃん。「よいしょっと。」高い枝に飛び乗りました。高い所に行けばきっとお父さんが来てくれる、と思ったのかもしれません。 – That’s it then.  The baby who didn’t get food hopped onto a higher branch.  He might have thought that his dad will bring something for him if he went higher.

さあ、その後、どうなったんでしょうね。きっと無事に成長して、自分でハエを捕まえていることでしょう。  – I wonder what happened to him.  We didn’t witness the end of the story, but I am sure he is fine. He may be a nice young bird who can catch bugs all by himself by now.

 

 

 

帰ってきました! – I am back!

数日、留守にしていました。  – We were out of town for a few days.

旅の間に何かブログアップできるかと思ったら、ダメでした。でも、その間、暇つぶしに今までずーっとどうにかしたいと思っていた残り毛糸を使って鍋つかみを編みました。  – I thought I could write one blog post during the trip, but didn’t get to it.  But, I crocheted two daisy potholders with leftover yarn that I always wanted to get rid of.

この手のデイジーの編み方はたくさんあるようです。つまり、どんな編み方をしても、まず失敗しない。でも、それなりに可愛らしくできちゃう。しかも実用的。  – It seems there are many different patterns for daisy potholders like these.  It means that it doesn’t matter how you make it.  You can get a quite decent result in the end, and it is very useful.

家に着いた時、バンちゃんが、「家の前にゴミの山がある。」などと言うので 夕暮れの景色の中を見てみると、確かに黒い袋の山。よく考えてみたら行く前から屋根の張り替え工事が始まっていたんです。まだ工事は終わっていなかった。  – When we arrived at our house, Banchan said, “there are a bunch of garbage bags in front of our house.”  I searched for it in the sunset view and found them indeed.  Come to think of it, the construction of the stucco caps around the roof edges had started even before the trip. They couldn’t finish it by the time we got back.

4月に引越しをしてきてから、色々な修理をしてきましたが、これが多分最後の大きな修理工事になると思います。あとは、キッチンの洗浄機やオーブンの入れ替えぐらいでしょうか。  – We have done so many home improvement projects on the house since we moved into the house in April.  I believe, however, that this is the last big construction project.  We may replace dishwashers and ovens in the kitchen but it’s a small project.

旅の理由はバンちゃんのお母さんのお見舞いです。腰の骨を折ってから2ヶ月が経ち、回復に向かっていますが、まだ24時間体制でケアの人がついています。いいニュースが一つ。8月半ばからいよいよ歩く訓練を始めるとのことです。  – The purpose of the trip was to visit Banchan’s mom who is in bed for two months since breaking her hip bone.  She had recovered very well in many ways but still needs 24/7 care.  One good news is that she can start a new walking exercise from mid-August.

バンちゃんのお兄さんは Lake Isabella という所に引っ越したので、そこにも行って見ました。 – We also visit Banchan’s brother who moved into Lake Isabella.

山道を運転している時から、山並みの一箇所だけ赤い尾根と煙を発見。なんと山火事だったんですね。こちらがそのニュース。  – We saw an oddly red hill while we were driving and wondering what it was.  It was indeed a fire.  Here is the news about it.

幸い、私たちは火事現場からかなり離れていたので安全でした。でも、消化するための飛行機が頭上を行き交っている現場を初めて目撃して少々興奮しました。携帯のカメラなので不鮮明ですが、白い粒が飛行機で、赤い煙のようなものが消化噴煙です。  – Luckily we were quite far away from the fire, and very safe.  Yet we could see airplanes in the air above our head.  It’s my first experience witnessing such a scene, it made me a little excited.  The shot above is taken with my iPhone.  The white dot is an airplane, and the red smoke is the fire retardant it is spraying out.

川に降りる階段。今年は雨が多かったので水位が高い。Staircase down to the river. The bottom of the steps is under the water due to the higher volume of water currently being released from Lake Isabella.

時間もあまりなかったので、少しだけKern 川沿いを歩いて帰って来ました。なかなか面白そうな場所なので、次回はもう少し時間が取れるといいですね。  – We walked along the Kern River only a short distance as we didn’t have much time.  We hope we can spend much more time to explore this area when we visit here next time.

毎日が本当に面白い。ここセントジョージではどこにも行かなくても自然がやって来る。  – It is truly amazing that something happens everyday here, in Saint George, UT.   The great nature is coming to us without going out anywhere to see it.

今日のポストは、ショッキングです。出来ることなら避けたいんですが、目の前に自然がやってきてしまったら仕方がないです。  – Today’s blog post is rather shocking.  I wish I could avoid this, but it came to me. I accept it as a part of nature.

私が目撃した時は、巨大芋虫、スフィンクスはすでに死んでいたと思います。中庭から裏庭に抜ける通路沿い、ローズマリーの低木の下で格闘劇が行われていました。  – I believe the Sphinx Caterpillar was already dead when I started watching it.  The fighting was happening under the Rosemary bush along the side of a pathway from the courtyard to the backyard.

というか、一方的にタイガーウィップテールがガンガン攻撃していただけです。  – Actually, it was only a one way fight by a Tiger Whiptail Lizard against a large object.

少々残酷なので写真は載せません。その代わり、ビデオを撮ったので、興味のある方はどうぞ。こちらもかなりショッキングなので、耐えられるようでしたら、どうぞ。  – It is quite disgusting to me, so I won’t post any images of the lizard biting the caterpillar.  If you are interested, see below video instead.  Again, it’s a shocking video.  

最後に、このショット、気に入ってます。  – Lastly, I want to share this image which I like.

ターガーから牙が生えているように見えるでしょう？もちろんそんなことなくて、前足の爪が丁度口のあたりにあるので錯覚ショットになりました。ローズマリーの枝の影もエコーして牙見たい。  – Can you see the Tiger Whiptail is growing sharp fangs???  Of course, it’s an illusion; the right front foot’s nails are perfectly positioned in the background behind the Tiger’s mouth. The shadow of the Rosemary also echos the “fangs”.

 

撮れた！ – Got it! Hummingbird Moth

昨日、今日と1000枚近く撮りました。その中から6枚、ハミングバードモスの特徴がよくわかるショットを載せます。 – I took nearly 1000 shots by following the Hummingbird Moth since yesterday.  I have chosen 6 shots out of them showing the characteristics of the moth well.

まずは、可愛い雰囲気の一枚。こんな風に花に近づいてきます。 – This shows a cute face.  It approaches flowers like this.

そして、舌を伸ばして  – and extends its tongue.

花の奥の方まで伸ばします。 – even getting deeper to the flower’s necter.

羽が綺麗ですね。 – The wings are pretty.

どのアングルからも蜜を吸い取ることができるようです。下からの時は羽をこんなにして、ホーバークラフトのように浮上させます。羽は自由自在に動かせるんですね。 – It seems they can collect the nectar from any angle. When the flower is downward like this, that is not a problem. The moth simply changes the wing movement and keeps itself floating.  It reminds me of hover craft.  

風がつよかったので捉えるのが大変でしたが、ハミングバードより近くに近寄れので、その意味では良かったです。アパチャー優先にして F 8.0に設定。ISOは2000。鳥を撮る時と同じように少し明るめにしました。そうすると、シャッタースピードは大体1/4000秒ぐらいになりましたが、それでもブレまくりでした。 – It was very hard to photograph with a strong wind.  On the other hand, it was easier than a Hummingbird photoshoot, because I could come closer.  I have set my camera in aperture priority, F8.0, and ISO 2000.  I also raised one notch higher for exposure compensation just like bird photography.  It gave me about 1/4000 seccond. Still, I couldn’t focus fast enough.
