サバクゴファーガメとアメリカドクトカゲを探しに出かけました。 We went out to look for Desert Tortoises and Gila Monsters.

もう十分暖かくなっているので、亀が歩き始めている季節です。また、一年に一回しか出てこないアメリカドクトカゲも、今頃出ていると聞いています。 It has already warmed up enough that it is time for the tortoises to start walking. I have also heard that the Gila Monsters, which only come out once a year, is out about now.

去年行った場所と同じ所を歩きました。その時はデザートウィローの花が満開の時期で、柔らかな花弁はサバクゴファートカゲの大好物なか、10匹以上のカメがお食事中でした。今回もまたそんな風景を期待して出かけたのですが1匹も見る事ができませんでした。花が全く開花していなかったので、まだ早すぎたのかもしれません。　We walked in the same area as we did last year. At that time, the Desert Willow flowers were in full bloom, and the soft petals were a favorite of Desert tortoises, and more than 10 tortoises were feeding. We went out hoping to see such a scene this time again, but we did not see a single tortoise. It may have been too early to see them because the flowers had not bloomed at all.

アメリカドクトカゲも見つけられませんでした。もう5年間も、探し続けています。忍耐強く、見つけるまで探し続けます。 I couldn’t find any Gila Monsters either. Banchan and I have been searching for 5 years now. I cannot stop now. I will keep looking for it until we find it.

その代わり、ゼブラのように縞のシッポを持つトカゲがたくさん走っていました。 Instead, there were many Zebra-tailed lizards.

ゼブラテールは駿足なので、なかなかいいショットが撮れません。とりわけシッポをカールさせて走る所は可愛いので、写真の代わりにビデオに収めました。質は悪いのですが、雰囲気がわかると思います。

早すぎてよく見えないので、4分の1のスピードに落としました。腕立て伏せをしているところで終了です。　It was too fast to see well, so I slowed this video down to a quarter of the speed. The video ends at the push-ups scene.

トカゲが撮りたくて行った保護区でしたが、期待外れに終わりました。それでも帰りがけにようやく見つけた Tiger Whiptail です。「待って〜！そんなに早く行かないで〜！」  – It was quite disappointing that we couldn’t see many lizards at the Reserve.  But, at least we did catch this one, a Tiger Whiptail lizard on the return trail back to the parking lot. ” Wait up~!  Don’t go so fast~!”

「わ、何か食べてるの？」「文句ある？」 – “Wow, are you eating something?”  “So?  Do you have a problem with that?”

もう1匹はなんと鳥と間違えてしまうところでした。Zebra-tailed lizardが低木の上で日光浴とは、面白い。  – One more lizard was on a bush. At first, I thought it was a bird.  It’s funny seeing a Zebra-tailed lizard sunbathing on a bush.

「この辺に陸ガメがいるよー」と言いながらマウンテンバイクの女性が走り去って行きました。「フーム、今度は日中、めちゃ暑い時に来るしかないかな?」と思いつつ、崖っぷちから風景を眺めていると、何かがいるのを発見。  – “You can find Tortoises around here sometimes~” said a person on a bike.  “Hmmm, we may need to come back here during the hottest time of the day next time…?”,  thought I.  At the same time, looking around the cliff  aimlessly, Banchan found something right at the edge of the cliff.

あれは・・・　　- That is….

確かにロードランナーです。彼も朝食のトカゲが見つからなくて暇そうです。それが理由かどうかわかりませんが、ポーズをとってくれました。  – It is surely a Roadrunner.  He seems bored not finding any lizards for his breakfast.  Because of that, or not, he posed nicely for me for a portrait.

ようやくそれなりに満足いくショットが撮れて気分が高まります。  – Finally I made shots that I could be satisfied with, and it made me happier.

Say’s Phoebe はちゃんと朝ごはんをゲットできました。  – Say’s Phoebe could catch his breakfast.

Black-throated sparrow はもっぱら木の実で満足しているみたい。 – Black-throated sparrow is quite content with tree seeds.

Western Kingbird は歌を歌うのに夢中です。  – Western Kingbird is really into singing.

トカゲはいなかったけど、初めて見た鳥の写真が撮れたので、まずまずの1日でした。  – Although there weren’t many lizards, I am happy with the day because I could take shots of birds I have never seen before.

さて、話題は変わりますが、今日はユタ州のみの祝日、Pioneer Day  です。パレードや花火でお祝いがあるそうです。モルモン教徒じゃない人たち用に、Veyo のパイとZion のビールを飲んでお祝いするパブもあるとか。Pie and Beer… Pie n beer… Pioneer…  ちょっと苦しいかな？  – Changing the subject, it’s Pioneer Day today in Utah.  I’ve heard that there are parades and fireworks in many cities on this day.  For non-Mormons, there is a pub serving local Veyo Pies and Zion beer for the celebration.  Pie and beer…  Pie n beer… Pioneer… get it?
