近いのに、まだ遠い So Close, Yet So Far

結論から言うと、毎日の捜索の甲斐もなく、この日も再びアメリカドクトカゲに遭遇できませんでした。 As it turned out, despite our daily searches, we have not encountered the Gila monster again.

それでも、少し近づけたと思います。なぜなら、私たちと同じようにアメリカドクトカゲを一目見てみたいという人たちと情報交換をしているからです。 Still, I think we got a little bit closer. This is because we are exchanging information with people who, like us, would like to catch a glimpse of the Gila Monster.

「見つけたら叫んで教えてあげるよ」と言って去っていく人たちを見ながら、少し嬉しくなりました。名前も知らないのに、同じ目的を持つことで同志のような感覚が生まれてるんだなーと気づいたからです。 I was a little pleased as I watched them leave, saying, “I’ll holler and let you know when I find them.” It was because I realized that even though we didn’t know each other’s names, we felt like comrades in arms by having the same goal.

この日も諦めかけていた時、遠くの方で私たちに向かって手を振っている人たちに気がつきました。走って近づいてくと、アメリカドクトカゲという単語が聞こえてきました。 We were about to give up on this day’s search when we noticed people waving at us in the distance. As we ran closer, we heard the word “Gila Monster.”

重いカメラを抱えながらも全力疾走でたどり着くと、ドクトカゲはすでに穴の中に入っていく所でした。 When we arrived at the spot, me running as fast as I could with my heavy camera, the lizard was already on its way into the hole.

なんと言いますか、私たちのアメリカドクトカゲへの道は遠いです。こんなに近くで見られそうなのに遠い。 What can I say, our road to the Gila Monster is a long one even though it seems to be so close to us.

6年間も待ち続けた末のシッポとの遭遇なので、喜んでもいいんですけどね。あと6年ぐらい探し続けたら、「目と目を見つめ合うような素晴らしい出会いができる！」と思っておけばいいでしょうか。 I should be happy, though, because after six years of waiting, I’ve encountered the tail of Gila Monster, twice. So, if I continue looking for another six more years, I am sure I will have a “wonderful, eye-to-eye encounter!” Haha!

サバクゴファーガメも住処の穴倉に帰ってくつろいでいたので、私たちも引き上げることにしました。 We decided to pull out as well, as the Mojave Desert Tortoises were already relaxing back in the burrows where they live.

春は駆け足で通り過ぎていきます。 Spring is passing by at a runaway pace.

サバクゴファーガメも忙しく歩き回ってます。 Mojave desert tortoises are busy walking around.

ゼブラテールリザードはよく挨拶してくれます。 Zebra-tailed lizard greets us often.

先日、その日も諦めて帰る道すがら、不思議な物体が不思議な動き方をして移動していました。それがまさにアメリカドクトカゲだと認識できた時には、低木の中に逃げていってしまいました。 The other day, on our way home after giving up the search that day, we saw a strange object moving in a strange manner. By the time I was able to recognize that it was indeed an Gila monster, it had fled into a bush.

かろうじて撮れた写真はこの尻尾だけでした。２０分じっと待ちましたがついに出てきてくれませんでした。 I barely managed to get a picture of it, just its tail. We waited patiently for 20 minutes, but it never came out.

年に2回しか巣から出てこないので脂肪をたっぷりと尻尾に蓄えている。 They come out of the nest only twice a year, so they have plenty of fat stored in their tails.

きっとまともな写真を撮れる時が来るはずです。だから、とりあえず、幻のように初めて目前に現れてくれたアメリカドクトカゲに感謝です。 There will surely come a time when I will be able to take decent pictures. So, for now, I would like to thank the Gila monster for appearing in front of me for the very first time, like a phantom.

 いつか、このサイドブロッチドリザードのようなポーズをしたアメリカドクトカゲを撮れるよう、しばらくは探索が続きます。 The search will continue for a while so that someday I can photograph an Gila monster in a pose like this Common Side-blotched Lizard.

ボビー独立？ Independent Bobby?

今朝、ボブキャットのボビーが裏庭でくつろいでいました。でも、お母さんはいませんでした。 Bobby the bobcat was relaxing in our backyard this morning. But we didn’t see his mom.

ボビーはもう赤ちゃんじゃないけれど、一人でハンティングができるほど成長しているのか少々不安です。 Bobby is not a baby anymore, but I am not sure if he can hunt already by himself.

その理由の一つは、日中に歩き回っていることです。主に日暮と夜明けに行動するとされるので、朝9時とか10時は遅すぎないかな？ヤバくない？ One of my concerns is that he is wandering around during the daytime. Their active times are sunset to midnight, and before and after sunrise time. Isn’t it too late for him to wander around at 9 or 10am? Isn’t it risky for him?

また、まだ大人の半分ぐらいのサイズと思われます。もう少し大きくなるまでお母さんと共に行動するんじゃないの？ Another reason is his size. He is still about half of adult size. The various websites say they normally stay with mom a little longer.

最近、モグラが裏庭の芝を食べてます。モグラ退治してくれたら大歓迎なんですけど。彼にできるかな？ In any case, we have been having gopher problems recently in the backyard. If he can catch them, we welcome him to stay as long as he wants. The question is can he catch them?

さて、ボブキャットの特徴を二つ紹介します。一つはとんがった耳です。耳の先端に黒い毛がピンと立っています。 Changing the subject, I want to describe to you two characteristics of bobcats. The first one is pointy ears. The tips of the ears have black pointy fur which makes distinct bobcat faces.

もう一つは、尻尾です。太い尻尾の先端にも黒い毛がついている事です。 Another one is their tails. The tip of the short fat tail also has black fur.

シッポの話 The Tale of a Tail

それはローズマリーの木の横で突然起こりました。 It happened right next to the rosemary bush.

  • 登場人物：サバクハリトカゲとゴーファーネーク（多分）
  • Characters: Desert spiny lizard, and Gopher snake (maybe)

トカゲがガレージの横を注意深くローズマリーの木の方向に歩いて来ました。そして、ローズマリーの木の30ｃｍぐらい前で立ち止まりました。何か躊躇しているような催眠術にかかったような様子。 A lizard was walking along the garage door towards our rosemary bush. And he froze about 10 inches in front of the rosemary bush. It seems that he was hypnotized by something.

その間1秒、ヘビが突然木の中からジャンプしてトカゲに襲いかかりました。Only a second or so later, a snake jumped out from the rosemary bush and attacked the lizard.

トカゲは地面から30ｃｍ以上ジャンプして去っていきました。ヘビはスルスルとローズマリーの木の中に消えていきました。 The lizard jumped up high as well about 10 inches and ran away. The snake also slithered away into the rosemary bush.

私には一瞬の出来事で何がどうなったのかわかりませんでした。ただ、ヘビはトカゲを捕まえ損ねたことは理解できました。 I couldn’t comprehend exactly what had just happened. I understood however that the snake failed to catch the lizard.

そして、残ったものは、このシッポ。 And the only thing left at the scene was this lizard tail.

ヘビはトカゲのシッポに噛み付いていたんですね。折れた所がその証拠です。その先の先端はトカゲ自身が命をかけて自分で切り落とした切り口です。 The snake actually bit the lizard tail. The bent section is the proof of it. The tip of the tail is the section the lizard himself released to protect his life.

家のガレージの前での短くも一大格闘劇でした。 It was a very short but grand drama in front of our garage.
