ネバダ州にあるリトルフィンランドは私たちの住むセイントジョージからは2時間半ぐらいの距離にあります。バージンリバーを超えからは1時間半ぐらいオフロードを南下します。Little Finland is in Nevada about 2.5 hours away from our house in St. George, UT. Once you cross the Virgin river, you need to drive on an unpaved road for about 1.5 hours.

魚のヒレみたいに薄く突き出ているような奇岩があることから、ヒレ（フィン）の国（ランド）、フィンランドと名付けられたそうです。The name came from the shape of the rocks like fish’s fins, so it is called fin+land = Finland.

ここはジュラ紀初期とされるアズテック層でできています。ナバホ砂岩層と同じ頃。ということは、恐竜の骨も見つかるのかもしれません。This area is composed of Aztec Formation rocks. It was formed about the same time as the Navajo Sandstone Formation was formed in the early Jurassic period. Who knows if we may find dinosaurs bones there.

交通の便が悪くてよかった。観光客でごった返したら、薄いヒレはあっという間に破れて亡くなってしまうことでしょう。実際、この地域の野生動植物や地形や文化財が破壊されていたので、2016年にこのフィンランドも含めて広大なゴールドビュート国定公園が指定され、保護されるようになりました。とは言え、公園としての施設は何もなく、レンジャーもいないので、どこまで保護されているのか少々不安です。I am glad that it’s a little hard to get there. If not, many tourists may go there and the chances of destroying the rock formations will increase. In fact, great concern arose about the destruction of this area, which lead to establishing the Gold Butte National Monument including Little Finland in 2016. Having said that, I still have a concern about how we can protect this area because I didn’t see any facility or sign around there.

もともと自然の侵食によって作られた岩ですから、今後侵食が進めばエントロピーの法則でなくなってしまう物です。でも、だからこそ何百年、何千年先まで謙虚にこの自然の不思議を観察していきたいです。Of course, it’s created by natural erosion. Sooner or later, it will be gone as we know it is the law of entropy. But until then, hopefully hundreds or thousands of years, we want to humbly enjoy the view.
