春を卒業　Graduating From Spring

昨夜、夕食後、一人で散歩に出ました。 After dinner last night, I went for a walk alone.

気温は96 F (35 C) なのに気持ちがいい。 Temperature was 96 F (35 C) and yet it felt good.

しばらくGoProで遊んでいたら、季節の変化に気がつきませんでした。 I had been playing with my GoPro for a while and didn’t notice the change in seasons.

帰り道、ご近所のユッカが夕陽を受けてぼんぼりのようでした。 On the way home, the yucca in the neighborhood looked like a lantern in the evening sun.

それを見て、うちのユッカ達の花も咲いているに違いないと、急いで帰って来ました。昨夜は暗くなってしまったので、写真は撮れませんでしたが、今日、携帯じゃなく、カメラで撮ってあげました。　Seeing this, I rushed back home to see that our yuccas must be blooming too. It was dark last night, so I couldn’t take any pictures, but today I took them with my camera, not my phone.

夕日とか、朝日を受けている姿の方が断然いいので、次回、覚えていたら撮ります。１年に1回花を咲かせますが、短命です。　I would definitely prefer to see it at sunset or with the sunrise, so I will take a picture next time if I remember.　It flowers once a year, but is short-lived.

うちの前庭にはレッドユッカとイエローユッカも植えられています。　We also have red and yellow yuccas planted in our front yard.

みんな元気そう。花が咲いていたのに気づいてあげなくてごめんね。　They both look fine. Sorry I didn’t notice the flowers were blooming.

気まぐれに思いついて裏庭のユッカも念の為、チェックしてみることにしました。花が咲かないユッカがあるんです。　On a whim, I decided to check the yucca in the backyard, just to be sure. I have a yucca that never flowers.

すると、　And then,

ウソ〜！！！ No Way!!!

この家に住み始めてから6年間、一度も見たことのなかった茎が堂々と、高く伸びていました。 The stems, which I had never seen in the six years I had lived in this house, grew tall and majestic.

さっそくネットサーチ。 I immediately searched the Internet about it.

ユッカだとばかり思っていたこの植物は、実は、Dasylirion wheeleri　通称、デザートスプーンと言われるまったく別の植物でした。 This plant, which I had assumed to be yucca, was actually a completely different plant known as Dasylirion wheeleri, commonly known as Desert Spoon.

茎は 5m (15feet) まで伸びるそうです。花がどのように開花するのか、まだわかりません。 The stem is said to grow up to 5m (15feet). I do not yet know how the flowers will bloom.

そこで、ズームしてみました。 So I zoomed in.

白いものが緑色の部分から出ています。もしかして、花なのでしょうか。 White stuff is coming out of the green part. Could they be flowers just starting?

白い、クリーム色っぽい花は雄株、紫ピンク色は雌株だそうです。 According to the websites I read, the plants with white, cream-colored flowers are male and the ones with purple-pink flowers are female.

どんな花が咲くのか。雄株か雌株か、今後の成長が楽しみです。　When the flowers fully develop, what color will they be? Male or female color? I am looking forward to their future growth.

前庭のデザートウィローの木。 This is a Desert Willow tree in our front yard.

綺麗な花がたくさん咲いてくれます。 They are full of beautiful flowers.

そして、毎日、コットンテール達に落ちた花びらを綺麗にしてもらってます。　Every day, we have the cottontails clean up the fallen petals.

昼も。Day

夜も。And night.

私のコンピュータのHD(ハードドライブ)の使用可能な容量が30GB（ギガバイト）となり、危険信号が出ていました。一枚の写真の大きさが60MB（メガバイト）もあるので、鳥の写真などをアップしたらあっという間に容量不足になってしまいます。　The available space of my computer’s HD was 30 GB, which was a danger signal. The size of a single photo from my camera is 60MB, so if I uploaded photos of a bird, etc., I would quickly run out of space.

外付けHDにファイルを移動したり、ゴミを削除したりして、なんとか使用可能な容量を 1 TB （テラバイト）まで確保しました。これでしばらくは安心です。 By moving files to an external HD and deleting trash, I managed to secure 1 TB of usable space. This will give me peace of mind for a while.

そこで早速したかったビデオ整理と作成に取り掛かりました。 So I set about organizing and creating the videos I wanted to do all this time.

家の外にringというセキュリティーカメラを7台設置しているので、毎日作られるビデオの量は半端ないです。7台の中でも特に3台は野生動物用です。数えることすらしなかった、何千というビデオの中から400本を選び、そこから更に厳選して数本の1分ビデオを作る予定です。 We have 7 ring cameras installed outside our house, so the amount of videos being made every day is staggering. 3 of the 7 cameras are for wildlife. Out of the thousands of videos that I didn’t even count, I have selected 400. I will choose even fewer videos from the selected pool, and am planning to make a few 1 minute videos with them.

今回は家の前庭の木の下に設置したカメラで捉えたコットンテールとジャックラビットのビデオをご紹介します。 This time I present a video of a Cottontail and a Jackrabbit captured by the camera set up under a tree in the west side of our front yard.
