そうなんです。なぜかうれしい。 That’s right. For some reason, I am happy.

この鳥のよく知られている習性テストに「記憶力テスト」があります。流石にカラス科の鳥なので、非常に賢いわけです。採取した松の実を貯蓄することで知られているので、実験室で再現させました。この実験室の中には石が2個置かれている他には、砂利で覆われている地面があるのみでした。 A well-known habit test for this bird is the “memory test”. Since the bird is a member of the crow family, it is extremely intelligent. It is known to store pine nuts that it collects, so the scientists had the birds reproduce this behavior in a laboratory. Other than two stones placed in this laboratory, there was only the ground, which was covered with gravel.

さあ、実験開始です。ホシガラスにせっせと松の実を隠させました。その後、ホシガラスが見ていない間に、2個の石のうち、1個を少し移動して、ホシガラスの行動を観察しました。 Now, the experiment began. They let the nutcracker hide the pine nuts diligently. Then, while the bird was not looking, they moved one of the two stones a little and observed the behavior of the bird.

ホシガラスの実験結果は、学者たちを喜ばせました。移動しなかった方の石の側に隠した松の実の方には、ホシガラスは予想通り躊躇なく探し当てました。でも、石を移動したために石から距離ができた松の実の方に関しては、探し当てるまでに時間がかかりました。以上のことから、ホシガラスは松の実の場所を、石と松の実の距離関係をセットにして記憶の中に収めていたということがわかりました。　The results of the Nutcracker experiment delighted the scientists. As expected, the bird did not hesitate to find the pine nuts that had been hidden on the side of the stone that had not been moved. However, it took longer to find the pine nut, which had been moved away from the stone. These results indicate that the bird had stored the location of the pine nut in its memory in combination with the distance between the stone and the pine nut.

ホシガラス、やっぱり賢い！ Nutcracker, you are indeed smart!

私たちも何かを記憶しようとする時には、全く関係ないことでも自分の既によく知っている事と関連付けて覚えますよね。 When we try to remember something, we also associate it with something we already know well, even if it is completely unrelated.

例えば、私の名前ですが、日本人には難しくなくても、英語圏の人たちには難しく、なかなか覚えてもらえませんでした。そこで、バンちゃんが提案してくれました。「み」と「えこ」と分けて、”me” と自分を指して、”echo”と音がこだまするほうなジェスチャーと一緒に伝えると、99％ぐらいの確率で覚えてもらえます。　For example, my name is not difficult for Japanese people, but for English-speaking people, it is difficult to remember. So, Ban-chan made a suggestion. I separate my name into two, “mi” and “eko.” I then point to myself with “me,” and then say “echo” with a gesture that makes the sound echo. With this, 99% of people remember my name .
