約 4km 、1時間ちょいで終了した短い早朝ハイキングでした。手袋をしても指が凍りつきそうな寒さでした。 It was a short early morning hike that took only a little over one hour for 2.5 miles. It was so cold that my fingers could freeze even with gloves.
視界が開けると空に向かって口を開けているスコリア丘が見えました。At a viewpoint, we could see a black Cinder Cone opening its mouth towards the sky.

動物たちの足跡が凍りついた地面についていました。これはシカのヒズメでしょう。Because the ground was still frozen, we could see animal foot prints here and there. This must be deer’s hooves.
ギャップの谷はロッククライミングのビギナー向けの場所として有名です。The Gap is known to be a good rock climbing practice place for beginners.
Up For Anything (何でもやっちゃう) という面白い名前のグループのメンバーになって初のハイキングでした。6.1 km (3.8 miles) We joined another new group, “Up For Anything.” It was our first hike with them. It was 3.8 miles total including walking through the rocky bottom of the gap.
チャレンジするような事は何もなかったのですが、新しい事を二つ学習しました。We didn’t find it to be challenging, but we learned two new things.
目に見えないバクテリアが土の中で一生懸命生きてます。そのため、土はこんな風にクラスト化します。だから「土が生きている」と表現する人もいます。踏んでしまえば壊れてしまいますが、それなりに硬くなっているので雨や風に流されにくくなり、風化や侵食を防いでいるんです。Bacteria live in the soil. Therefore, the soil becomes crusty like this. Some people say it is a living soil because of the presence of the bacteria. It is very easy to destroy by stepping on it. But it is somewhat hard so normal processes of erosion don’t destroy it.
水がなくても何ヶ月も何年も生き延びられるよう、死んだように活動を停止してただひたすら雨が降るのを待ち続けられる苔です。だから表面は枯れて死んでいるように見えるんですが、水を注ぐとまるで生き返ったように鮮やかな緑になります。だからそんなニックネームがついたんですね。 Moss can live many months and years without water. In order to do that, it has to save energy. In other words, it looks dead from the outside, but it is actually living as long as it contains at least 5% moisture within.
下の写真は生き返った苔です。ハイキングをし始めた頃に水をかけておいて、4時間後にみたら緑色になっていた証明写真です。The picture below is the proof of the resurrection moss. We poured a tiny bit of water on the moss that was brown at the beginning of the hike. The picture below is the same moss four hours later showing as bright green.
毎朝ハイキングをするグループに参加してみました。このグループ初のハイキングは約 6km のなだらかなコースでした。We joined a hiking group that hikes every early morning. This was our first time joining them. It was 3.7 miles and a moderately easy hike.
多分、左に見えるのがホワイトドーム。I think the White Dome is on the right in the below picture.
ここで特記する事は、Dwarf Bear-Poppy という植物。世界中でもここにしか生息しない希少植物です。冬なのでこんな姿ですが、春には美しい白い花を咲かせます。けなげに厳しい冬の寒さを耐えているんですね。The special note on this hike is that it is the home of the Dwarf Bear-Poppy plant. It lives only in this area of the world. Because it’s winter, it looks like this, but you can see pretty white flowers in Spring. How admirable it is to live through such cold winter days!
ここはMoenkopi という地層で石膏岩を含んだ荒地です。そんなユニークな場所に生きているのがこの植物なんですね。国の絶滅危惧種に指定されています。This is a badlands area composed of the Moenkopi formation. This plant likes to live in such places that include gypsum everywhere.
約8.5 km (5.3 miles) 700feet 標高差の簡単なハイキング。 St George の南にギャップ (Gap = 裂け目、まさに断層で亀裂が起きた部分) という場所があります。その右側をギャップに沿って歩いていくと洞窟があります。It was an easy hike, 5.3 miles and 700 feet elevation gain. You can find Hippo’s cave after a 2-3 mile walk along the Gap in St. George UT.
洞窟内部で見つけた不思議な物体。We found a strange object in the cave.
「コウモリのフンが固まった物？」「古い木の樹液？」小さなカケラを洞窟の外に持ち出して観察しましたが未だに謎です。”Could it be bat droppings?” “Or could it be old tree sap?” etc. Although we observed a piece of it outside of the cave, it’s still unknown.
ギャップの崖の上から南方の景色。今度はこの下のルートを歩きます。Looking down the southern direction from the cliff. We will be hiking the trail down below in a week.
