2月にスタートしたTシャツプロジェクトですが、年内完成を目標にしていました。ところが、キルトサンドイッチの糊付けに成功したので、俄然意欲が湧いてきて、次の行程、キルティング（縫う）も終わらせてしまいました。When I started the T-shirt project in February, I set the completion date to be the end of this year. But now, my motivation is very high because the quilt sandwich making was such a success. So I moved on to the next process, quilting (sewing).

当初の手縫い予定も変更して、ミシンでザクザクぬい進めることにしました。キルト用のミシンじゃなく普通のミシンしかないのが心配でしたが、「やってみなきゃわかんない。きっと何とかなる！」と楽観的にスタートさせました。I decided to use a sewing machine for this process instead of hand stitching. I only have a regular sewing machine, so it could be tough. But I said to myself, “You never know until you try it. I am sure I can do this.” I don’t know where I got such confidence, but I started it.

始めてからわかった事。普通のミシンでも出来る。でも、仕上がりが綺麗じゃない。もっと小さいサイズのキルトならまだしも、巨大サイズだと、糊付けしたサンドイッチでもずれてしまいます。I found out that a regular sewing machine can do the job, but the result is not as clean as it could be with hand stitching. If it was a much smaller quilt, it might work fine. But with a large size quilt like mine, the sandwich layers shifted even though I glued them together.

特に柔らかくて伸縮性のあるTシャツ地に厚い塗料のプリントのある部分では、布が大幅にずれてしまいました。ご愛嬌ってことで、無視してミシンを走らせます。Especially when the T-shirt being sewed is very soft and stretchable and it has thick print on it, the fabric moves. Although I observed what was happening (shown in the picture above), the fabric folded on top of the other. I ignored and moved on. “No one will notice it if they look at it from far away” I said to myself.

とは言え、ミシンの足がプリントの部分にくっついて、少しのずれがどんどん増幅していくという事態に、流石の私も「マズイ！」と立ち止まりました。でも、閃きは困難を乗り越えようとする時にやってきます。「マスキングテープ使ってみたら？」Having said that, I stopped and thought I should do something about it when I noticed the sandwich doesn’t hold the layers well anymore and the fabric shift was getting larger and larger. “What can I do…” Usually, a great idea will come to me when I want to overcome a tough situation. “How about using masking tape?”

効果の程は、ないよりいいかなという程度。それより、まっすぐ縫うのは非常に難しいのでマスキングテープがガイドラインの役目を果たしてくれたので、その意味で使ってよかったです。It worked somewhat. It was better than nothing, but I found that it was useful to sew a straight line as I could follow the masking tape as a guild line.

この工程で最大の難関は、大きなキルトサンドイッチをミシンの小さいアームホールに通すことでした。端を縫うのには問題ないですが、真ん中あたりだと苦しいです。アームホール側のキルトを硬く丸めて、少しづつミシンがけをする作業は集中力が必要です。サンドイッチを平らに置けないから、ズレていることもわからない。The most challenging thing for this process was that the bulk of the quilt sandwich has to go through the tiny sewing machine’s arm. If you sew on the edge, it’s no problem because the big portion of the sandwich is outside of the arm. But sewing around the middle requires my full attention and focus. Rolling up the quilt tight, trying to make the quilt as flat as you could, and sewing one inch at the time, I started to wonder if stitching it by hand would have been faster.

「自分用キルトだよ。大雑把にできていればいい！」をモットーにザクザク行進。3日間かけてザクザクミシンがけをして、ついにミシンキルティング終了 I kept saying to myself, “It’s a quilt for me. As long as I am fine with it, that’s all that matters.” So I kept going for three days, and Done!

気持ちいい〜！ What a good feeling!

チョイ待ち。最後のパネルがあったよ。ここだけは手縫いです。なぜなら、小さな丸い図柄を縫わなければいけないからです。白い部分が空きすぎていたので、キルティングでカバーしようと思ったんですよね。まずは適当にマッチするようなデザインを描きました。Wait a minute. I have one more panel to go. This one required hand stitching because my design has small circles. I didn’t plan for this, but I felt I had to do something for the large empty space. So I drew objects echoing the original picture.

ぬい終わった後、こんな感じ。悪くない。これでキルティング（縫う）完成だーい❗️The hand stiching was done. Here it is. Not bad at all. This is it, the quilting complete!!!

次は端の処理だけよ。終わりが近い。The next step is edges and corners. The end is near.
