ローカルの彫刻家に依頼されて、彼の作品を撮りました。ポートフォリオと本の作成をしたいとのことでした。 A local sculptor commissioned me to photograph his work. He wanted to create a portfolio and a book.

まずは彼のスタジオを訪問して、作品や光の状況を下調べしました。 I first visited his studio to get a preliminary look at his work and the light conditions.
本番ではスピードライトを2台、リフレクターを2-3枚を持参で臨みました。 I brought two speedlights and 2-3 reflectors on the day of the photoshoot.
彼のスタジオでの撮影は作品数が多くても、結構スムーズにできたと思います。もちろん、バンちゃんのサポートは大きかったです。 I think the shooting at his studio went quite smoothly, even though there were a lot of sculptures to photograph. Of course, Banchan’s support was significant.
それに比べると、予想した通り、ご自宅に飾られている作品の撮影には苦労しました。41 kg/90 LB の作品ですから動かすこともできないので、光とアングルを色々試して修了させました。 In comparison, as expected, it was difficult to photograph the sculptures displayed in his living spaces. Because the 41 kg/90 lb sculpture could not be moved, I had to experiment with different light and angles to complete the project.
芸術作品の撮影会はこれで2回目です。前回は主にモノタイプで平面へのチャレンジでしたが、今回は彫刻なので立体感を影で作りつつ、しかも影で暗くならないようにするという作業でした。 This is the second time for me to photograph art work. The last time was mainly monotype, a challenge to photograph a flat surface, but this time it was a sculpture, a task to create a three-dimensional effect with shadows, while at the same time making sure that the shadows were not too harsh.
お金をもらいながら色々な事が学べる貴重な撮影会でした。 It was a valuable photo session where I could learn many things while getting paid.
日照時間が最短の日が過ぎた後の1日目。この時期になると、時間が猛スピードで過ぎていきますよね。もう、追いつきません。今日もフルスピードで行きますが、できうる事なら、この一瞬をじっくりとお茶を啜りながら味わいたいです。 It’s the first day after Winter Solstice. 土曜日のマーケットに出店を出し始めてから、準備に忙しくて毎週が飛ぶようにすぎていきました。でも、来年4月ぐらいまでお休みすることにしたので、今日は久しぶりにのんびりできる土曜日です。 Since we started having a booth at the Saturday market, we have been so busy with preparations for it that each week has flown by. However, we decided to take a break until next April, so today is the first relaxing Saturday in a while.
新しい年が明けるまでの残り7日間で何ができるでしょうか。 What can we do in the remaining seven days before the new year dawns?

ご近所さんへの年末のクッキー焼きとご挨拶はカット。それだけで一日は潰れますからね。それに、年末大掃除大会も今年はグッと簡単にします。I will cut out the year-end cookie baking and greetings to neighbors. That alone will take up a whole day, you know. Besides, the year-end huge cleaning will be a lot easier this year.
さあ、厳選した3項目。これなら出来ます。全部、今年始めたスモールビジネスがらみです。 Now, these are three carefully selected items. I can do this. All of them are related to the small business I started this year.
在庫数の点検と製品カタログのアップデート。 Inspect inventory counts and update product catalogs.
製品の写真とビデオを撮る。 Take pictures and videos of the products.
ウェブサイトに半分の製品をアップして、サイトを宣伝し始める。 Upload half the products to the web site and start promoting the site.
当初立てた目標、「投資金額の5千ドルは取り戻す」は5分の1しかできてませんが、まだトレーニング段階という事で、来年に持ち越します。 I am only one-fifth of the way to my original goal of getting back $5,000 of my investment. Well, I say I am still in the training phase, so I will carry that over to next year.
夏至を迎える頃には、私のコースターと写真のウェブサイトは、軌道に乗ってハンズフリーになっている事が目標です。 My goal is that by the time the summer solstice arrives, my coaster and photo website will be on track and hands-free.
11月はとても忙しく、ブログを書く暇もなくすぎてしまいました。 November was a very busy month and passed without time to write a blog.
キンセアニェーラにご招待をいただいて行って来ました。15歳の女の子が思いっきりお姫様になって、400人もの友人を招待して踊りまくる盛大なパーティーでした。家族全員が一緒に踊るダンスも披露するなど、時間をかけて準備してきたことがわかりました。 We were invited to go to Quinceañera, a grand party where a 15 year old girl became a princess, and invited 400 of her friends to a dance and celebration. I could tell that her family had spent a lot of time preparing for the event, including a dance performance where the whole family danced together.
主人公の15歳の女の子はすでにスーパースターのような振る舞いでゲストに挨拶ができていることに驚きました。また、彼女が家族に愛されて育ってきたことが、いろいろな場面で見えていて、とてもいいパーティーだったと思います。 I was amazed that the main character, a 15 year old girl, could already act like a superstar and greet the guests. I also think it was a very nice party because you could see in many instances that she has been loved and nurtured by her family.
その後、11月のメインイベント、写真のワークショップ旅行に出かけました。 We then went on to the main event of November, a photography workshop tour.
アリゾナ州のTuba Cityを拠点にして、ナバホ族の居留地に入らせてもらいました。日程はかなり強行軍で、日の出ショットを撮るために、朝4時に起きて昼前に帰ってくる。日の入りショットを撮るために、午後3時ごろに出かけて7時過ぎに帰ってくるというルーティンの毎日。 We were based in Tuba City, Arizona, and were allowed to enter the Navajo reservation. The itinerary was pretty intense: to get sunrise shots, we would get up at 4:00 AM and return before noon. To get sunset shots, we would go out around 3:00 PM and return after 7:00 PM.
もう、指がちぎれそうなくらい寒いのにカメラ調整やシャッターを切るためには、やはり指を出していなければいけなかったので、苦しかったです。 I was already suffering because it was so cold that my fingers were numb, but I still had to keep them out to adjust the camera and release the shutter.
でも、毎日が充実していました。何はともあれ、胸がギューっとなるほどの大自然の美しさに、至福の時間を過ごしました。 But every day was full of life. At any rate, I was blissfully happy with the beauty of nature that made my heart sing.

2番目と3番目は難しくないのですぐできますが、1番目は少々難しいです。フォトショップの編集が結構面倒くさくて、たくさん撮った写真はまだそのままで、編集に取り掛かっていません。 The second and third are not difficult and can be done quickly, but the first is a bit more difficult. The editing in Photoshop is quite tedious, so I have not started editing the many photos I have taken yet.
この旅行で持ち帰った写真の中から一枚を印刷して年末の写真コンテストに応募します。もう一枚は昔の写真です。 One of the photos I brought back from this trip will be printed and entered in a photo contest at the end of the year.
コンテストと言えば、すでに、ローカルの別のアートコンテストに応募していますが、入賞できませんでした。かなりがっかり。 Speaking of contests, I have already entered another local art contest, but did not win an award. I was quite disappointed.
それでもコンテストに応募する事の意義はありました。応募用紙の記入の仕方、作品を展示するために指定された通りに仕上げる、などなど。作品を持って行ってもダメ出しされ、会場まで行ったり来たりで、冷や汗をかきました。経験済みのバンちゃんがいてくれたおかげで、助かりました。やってみなければ分からない事があるものです。でも、次回はこの経験でバッチリ大丈夫です。 Still, it was worthwhile to do so. How to fill out the entry form, make sure the work was done as specified for display, and so on. Thanks to Banchan who has gone through the process already, I was able to prepare the photos properly in the end. But I was in a cold sweat when I brought my work to the venue and was told no, and had to go back and forth to the venue. There are things you don’t know unless you try. But next time, I will be perfectly fine with this experience.
まだ摂氏38℃を超える9 月から土曜日のマーケットにお店を出し始めました。 I started setting up my booth at the Saturday market in September when the temperature was still above 100°F.

それから3ヶ月、もう零下となる12月となりました。 Three months later, it is December, with near freezing temperatures.
出店回数は6回、トータルの収益がついに$1,000を超えました！ パチパチ！！！ I have attended this market 6 times so far and my total earnings finally exceeded $1,000! Hooray!
利益はまだ正確には計算していないのでわかりませんが、初期投資などを差し引いて$50ぐらいかな。 I don’t know the exact profit yet as I haven’t calculated it, but I’m guessing around $50 not including the initial investment, etc.

今年は、既に寒くなってしまったので、今週末で終了としますが、来年もまだ続けます。エグジットプランは当然ありますが、まだその時期ではありません。 This year I will end this weekend as it is already cold, but I will continue next year. I have an exit plan, of course, but it is not time for that yet.

その間に、私の過去の仕事人生35年とは全くかけ離れた人達と接する機会が多くなり、刺激をもらい、勉強させてもらってます。 During that time, I have had many opportunities to come into contact with people who are very different from those I have met over my past 35 years of work, and learned a lot from them. Along with those people, I have met many dogs as well, so I am sharing their pictures here.

彼女はアルツハイマーと診断され、今後自分ではコントロールできない人生が待っていることを100％受け入れ、その為の準備もしつつ、今できることを精一杯しています。 The wife has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and has accepted that her life will be beyond her control, and she is doing the best she can now, while also preparing for the future.

避けられない「死」から逆算して、今何をしたいのかを考える事の大切さは、一応は知っていても、それを本当に認識して、覚悟を決めて生きている人には今まで出会っていませんでした。 Although I knew in passing the importance of thinking about what one wants to do now, working backward from the inevitable “death,” I had never met anyone who truly recognized this and was prepared to live now.
二人とも仕事で世界中を駆け回って来たそうです。それに比べると今の生活はとても地味です。でも、迫り来る将来に備えて、今、本当にしたいことをしているんだと思いました。だから彼らも収益は無くてもマーケットに出店することに意義を見出しているのだと思います。 Throughout their past careers, they have traveled all over the world. Compared to that, their current life is very simple. But I thought they are doing what they really want to do now to prepare for the looming future. That is why I think they also find meaning in opening booth at the market, even if they don’t make much profit.
