フェアバンクスでは、何人かの逞しく生きる若者に出会いました。 We met several strong-willed young people in Fairbanks.

アラスカといえば金の採掘で有名です。ゴールド ドーターズ（直訳：金の娘たち）は旅行者にも金の採掘の一部を経験させてくれる所です。名前が示す通り、二人姉妹が始めたビジネスです。 Alaska is famous for “Gold digging”. The Gold Daughters is a place for tourists to experience panning for gold. It’s a business started by two sisters (daughters) as the name indicates.

彼女たちのおじいさんはオリンピック水泳選手でしたが、引退後、アラスカで広大な土地を購入し、金の発掘という新しい人生を歩み始めます。この姉妹はそんなお爺さんの元で育ち、大学卒業後、二人のビジネスベンチャーが始まりました。Their grandfather was an Olympic swimmer. He came to Alaska, bought a huge land, and started a new life as a gold miner after his retirement from competitive swimming. These girls grew up under him, and started the business after they both finished college.

勿論今でもゴールド採掘のビジネスは続いていますが、今後伸びていくかもしれない化石の発掘にも力を入れ始めました。 The gold panning is still their on-going main business, but they have been digging out fossils as well. This could be a good future business.

半端ではない発掘量に、古生物学者たちも注目しています。 The amount of fossils they have found are incredible. Paleontologists are now paying attention to their finds.

Tシャツとカップケーキ売るところからスタートしたベンチャーです。チャンスを逃さず、躊躇なくやってみようというバイタリティーはすごいですよね！ They began their business just selling T-shirts and cupcakes. Now they have come this far. Their vitality is admirable. They grab the chance when they see it and take on new challenges.

次に出会ったのは、エミリーロビンソンという14歳の女の子です。 Next, we met a 14 year old girl. Her name is Emily Robinson.

まだ14歳の若さなのに人前で話をすることに躊躇しません。その後、彼女がジュニア犬ぞりレースのチャンピオンだと知って納得しました。 She didn’t hesitate at all speaking in front of people even though she was only 14. I understood why later because we learned that she is the champion of the Junior Dog Sled race.

大人のレースは1000マイルの荒地を10日から20日間で走り切りますが、ジュニアなので150マイル（約240km) を1日で走ります。だから1日分の自分の食糧と犬たちの食糧を積んでスタートさせます。 The adult dog sled race is 1,000 miles through wilderness. It takes 10 – 20 days. On the other hand the Junior race is only 150 miles completing in a day. So they carry 1 day’s worth of food for themselves as well as their dogs.

犬ぞりの過酷なところは、勿論、極寒の自然の厳しさ、自分の体調管理、そして最も大切な犬たちの調教と管理でしょう。 I imagine that the harshest aspect of the dog sled race is the severe weather. It is quite a challenge to their own mental and physical capabilities. Managing dogs could be a challenge, too.

まだ14歳の女の子ですから誘惑がたくさんありそうです。でもブレずに自分のやりたい事をやり通す強い意志、敬服しました。Thinking back when I was 14 years of age, I can easily imagine that so many temptations are around Emily. But she maintains her focus on what she wants to do. I admire her strong will.
