アラスカ鉄道の本線はフェアバンクスからアンカレッジまで470マイルを走ります。 The main line of the Alaska railroad is from Fairbanks to Anchorage, and the length is 470 miles.

私達はフェアバンクスからタルキートナまで、4時間の旅をしました。 Our ride was the four hour trip from Fairbanks to Talkeetna.

早朝初だったので、乗車してから列車スペシャル、バーボン入りのコーヒーを飲みました。美味〜！ It was still early in the morning, so I ordered the train’s special coffee, which includes bourbon. Mmm yum!

落ち着いてからデッキに出ました。走ってきた線路の景色は清々しい。でも、何かおかしくない？ After a while, I went out to the deck. The view of the rail was quite refreshing. But wait. Isn’t there something wrong with this picture?

線路網が毛細管のように発達している日本から来た私にしか感じなかった不思議さだったのかもしれません。 I am not sure if it’s only me that feels that way. I came from Japan where the train rails are everywhere like capillary blood vessels.

単線だったんです。たった一枚だけ発見できた複線の写真がこれです。どこで撮ったのか、全く覚えていません。 My uneasiness was that it was single track. I found only one picture showing double tracks, but I don’t remember at where I took.

気になって調べてみて安心しました。列車は2本しかなく、フェアバンクスとアンカレッジ間を北からと南から1日に一回だけ走るんです。だから、どこか1箇所ですれ違うための複線があればいいわけです。 It bothered me so much that I checked the rail system. There are only two trains running once per day, one starts from Anchorage to Fairbanks, and one starts from Fairbanks to Anchorage. These two trains must pass by each other at some point, and they need the double track section there. Phew, I can sleep now.

話を戻し、2回目の朝食タイム。2階から一階に降りると、食堂車がありました。 Let’s get back to the subject. It was breakfast time. We went down to first floor, where the dining room is.

すでにホテルで朝食を取っていたし、バーボン入りコーヒーもいただいていたので、チョッピリだけ摘みました。 I wasn’t hungry then because I had a light breakfast at the hotel, and the bourbon coffee was quite filling. So I ate only a little bit, but it was a nice feeling to share the meal together with people.

車窓からの景色はますます雄大になっていきました。ここは、太古の昔、北アメリカ大陸プーレートと太平洋プレートがぶつかりあって隆起してできた山々がある所です。デボン紀から白亜紀の頃の古い地層もネナナ川沿いに見えていました。 The view from the train window was getting better and better. One of them was the old strata, sometime from Devonian to Cretaceous, that came out from the Nenana river. Once upon a time, the North America plate and the Pacific ocean plate crashed into each other, and created huge earth movements. That was the result of it right there.

車掌さんが登場し、旅の終わりを告げています。ちょっと名残惜しい。Mr. Conductor came to our train car telling us that our trip would end soon. It was sad to leave so soon.

タルキートナ駅で降り、ここからデナリ国立公園の入り口にあるホテルに向かいました。 This is Talkeetna station. We got off the train, and went to our hotel near the entrance of Denali National Park.
