エノック野生動物保護センターは、怪我をした動物救済と教育を目的に1997年に設立されたNPO (Non Profit Organization, 非営利団体）です。 The Enoch Wildlife Rescue is a non-profit organization (NPO) established in 1997 for the purpose of injured animal rescue and education.

先日、私たちは設立者のマーティン タイナーの猛禽類の講演を聞きに行ってきました。Last week, we went to a talk on the birds of prey by founder Martin Tyner.

この保護センターは動物の病院です。役割は主に野生動物を保護し、治療し、そして再び自然に返すことです。交通事故による怪我が最大の原因ですが、その他、人による虐待なども含まれています。なので、人々に野生動物についての知識を広めるための教育も重要な活動の一部となっています。 This conservation center is an animal hospital. Its role is primarily to protect, treat, and reintroduce wild animals back into the wild. Injuries caused by traffic accidents are the most common cause of injuries, but there are also other cases of abuse by people. Therefore, education is an important part of it’s activity to spread knowledge about wild animals to the public.

怪我や病気が完治した動物は、国の規定する規則により、6ヶ月以内に自然に返すことになっています。だから、保護センターには長期滞在をする動物はいません。半年で怪我が完治できない場合は、残念ながら殺傷されなければいけない規則になっています。　Animals that have fully recovered from their injuries or illnesses are to be returned to nature within six months, according to the rules and regulations set forth by the government. So no animals are allowed to stay in the shelter for a long period of time. If the injury cannot be completely cured in six months, the rule unfortunately requires that the animal must be killed.

この6ヶ月という規定の理由はいろいろあるはずですが、私の予想では、資金の問題が最大の理由と言っていいでしょう。国から資金提供を受けているので、規定に従わざるを得ないわけです。ただ、現実問題としては、資金は断然足りないんですね。保護されている動物の食料にかかるコストは半端ではなく、冷凍肉の確保は常に最大の課題だそうです。　There must be many reasons for this 6 month stipulation, but my guess is that the funding issue is the biggest reason. Since the center is funded by the government, they have no choice but to comply with the stipulation. However, as a practical matter, the funding is definitely not enough. The cost of food for protected animals is far from enough, and securing frozen meat is always the biggest challenge.

保護センターには3羽の親善大使がいます。創設者のマーティンさんと共に講演に参加する鳥たちです。この日は5羽が来てくれましたが、親善大使は以下の3羽です。 The rescue center has three ambassadors of goodwill. (Lucky us that Mr. Martin brought two more birds on that day.) They are the birds that attend the lecture with the founder, Mr. Martin, normally.

彼らは外見上問題がないのですが、野生には戻せない理由があり、性格も温和なので親善大使として選ばれました。　They were chosen as goodwill ambassadors because they have no outward appearance problems and they have mild personalities. Though they look okay, there are reasons why they cannot be released back into the wild.

例えば、ハヤブサのヘレンは生まれながらにほぼ全盲で、うまく飛べません。そこでハヤブサを代表して、教育大使になりました。 For example, Helen the peregrine falcon was born nearly blind and cannot fly well. So, on behalf of the falcons, she became an educational ambassador.

モモアカノスリのベレは心に傷を持っていました。残念なことに一人の少年がモモアカノスリの卵を巣から盗んで育てました。どのように育てられたのかは不明ですが、その飼育方法のために、牛やシカ、挙げ句の果てに人にもアタックするようになっていました。勿論飼い主はお手上げ状態でした。殺傷する手段もあったはずですが、もう一度チャンスをあげようということで、マーティンさんの所に来たという経歴があります。 Belle, the Harris hawk, was traumatized. Unfortunately, one young boy stole an egg of a Harris hawk from its nest and raised the chick which would become her. It is unknown how she was raised, but because of the way she was raised, she began to attack cows, sheep, and even people. Of course, the owners could not control her. They could have had the means to kill her, but they decided to give her one more chance, and she came to Martin’s place.

今ではマーティンさんの家の中に自由に出入りして、家族同然の生活ができるようになりました。ベレは檻の中に入っているわけではないので、いつでも自然に帰ることができます。もしかしたら、将来帰って来なくなる日がくるかもしれません。マーティンさんはそれを願っています。 She is now free to come and go in Martin’s home and live as if she is a part of the family. Belle is not in a cage and can go back to wildlife at any time now. Perhaps one day in the future she will not come back. Martin hopes so.

モモアカスリのベレ Belle the Harris Hawk

こちらはイヌワシのスカウトです。まず、その大きさに圧倒されました。マーティンさんがイヌワシの足を上げて爪の大きさを見せてくれている所です。羽毛が舞い散る中、ほんの1-2メートルほど先から見ていた私にとっては奇跡のような光景でした。　This is Scout the Golden eagle. First of all, I was overwhelmed by its size. Here is Martin lifting the golden eagle’s leg to show us the size of its talons. It was a miraculous sight for me as I watched from only a few feet away with wings flapping.

イヌワシの英語名は”Golden Eagle” 直訳は「金色のワシ」です。頭の上の羽の色が金色に見えるでしょうか。遠くから、しかも下からしか見たことがなかったので、頭の上がこんなに美しい金色だったとは知りませんでした。これで名前の由来に納得することができました。ちなみに、白頭鷲の名前の由来も同じ理由です。一目瞭然で、頭の色が白いことから名付けられたそうです。 Do you see the golden color of the feathers on its head? I had only seen the golden eagle from afar and from below, so I had no idea that the top of its head was such a beautiful golden color. Now I am convinced of the origin of its name. Incidentally, the bald eagle’s name also comes from the same reason. It is obvious at a glance, and it was named after the white color of its head.

イヌワシのスカウト Scout the Golden eagle

ノスリやワシは大きいので、油断をすれば鼻などを嘴で一気にもぎ取られてしまうらしいです。でも、マーティンさんと鳥たちの間には深い信頼関係が築かれているので、近くで見ていた私たちも安心できました。 I heard that hawks and eagles are so large that if you are not careful, they can rip off your nose and other parts with their beaks in one fell swoop. However, the deep trust between Martin and the birds made me feel at ease as we watched from nearby.

マーティンさんと奥さんのスーザンさんは資金集めのために本を出版されています。この本には面白い鳥たちとのエピソードが詰まっています。本の見開きにはご夫婦のサインと共に、スカウトの足のサインもおまけについています。　Martin and his wife Susan have published a book as a fundraiser. The book is filled with interesting bird stories. Along with the couple’s signatures, the book is also signed by Scout’s foot print as an added bonus on the book spread.

下の写真は、参加者の質問に答えるマーティンさんを撮ったものですが、イヌワシのスカウトも一緒になって答えているようです。 The photo below shows Martin answering a participant’s question, and it looks like Scout the golden eagle is also answering with him.

白頭鷲とイヌワシ Bald Eagle And Golden Eagle

どうやって見分けますか？ How do you identify which is which?

白頭鷲の大人は誰でもわかりますよね。I assume you can tell easily that this bird is a Bald Eagle.

こちらは犬鷲の大人。違いははっきりしてますね。This is a Golden Eagle. They look very different.

ただ、巣立ってから完全に成長するまでの5年間、この鳥たちは姿を変えていきます。クチバシと羽の色が変わっていくので、遠い上空を飛んでいる鳥を見ても、はっきりと見分けられない時の方が多いかもしれません。The problem is that they transform their appearance until fully grown for about five years after they fledge. So, many people can’t identify what they are for sure when they are flying up high in the sky.

イヌワシの幼鳥の写真は残念ながらありません。その代わり、こちらのリンクをご覧ください。両者を比較しています。 Unfortunately, I didn’t find even one juvenile Golden Eagle on this trip. So, I found this site instead, a very useful website comparing both juvenile birds.

白頭鷲の幼鳥は成長するにつれて徐々に頭が白くなります。また、嘴も黒から黄色に変わっていきます。The head of juvenile Bald Eagles changes from dark brown to white gradually. The beak also changes from dark to yellow.

方や、イヌワシの変化は羽を広げた時の白い部分が少しずつなくなっていくことと、嘴の根本部分の鮮やかな黄色が徐々に焦茶色になる。つまり、脚をのぞいて全体が焦茶色になっていくことだと理解しています。On the other hand, the juvenile Golden Eagle has some white patches on their wings that will go away. The base of the beak is yellow but will become dark brown later. In fact, their entire body will become dark except for their feet.

こんな風に比較しても識別はまだまだ難しい。写真を撮ってズームアップしてみないとわからない。例えばこんな写真、どっちだかわかりますか？ヒントは、尻尾の羽の色と、胸のまだら色、それに嘴です。Although I summarized the comparison, it is still very difficult to identify them until you capture them and zoom in close. For example, refer to the picture below. Which bird is this? The hint is tail and chest, and beak.

答えは、白頭鷲の幼鳥です。羽を大きく広げてもらえるとわかりやすいですね。The answer is a juvenile Bald Eagle. It’s so much easier to identify it when it spreads its wings.

若鶏を見分ける – Identifying Immature Birds

春の嵐、風の強い日にワシを求めて出かけました。たどり着いた所はセイントジョージより硬度が高いので、まだ寒い。そして強風と曇り空、天候はよくありません。- On a strong windy day like a spring storm, we went out to look for eagles.  The place we went to was much higher altitude than Saint George, so it’s still very cold.  With strong wind and cloudy weather, it wasn’t a good day at all.

それでも、白い頭に黒いボディーは遠くからでも見つけられました。というか、遠すぎます。- But still, we could see Bald Eagles with white heads and black bodies from far away.  And they were very far away.

そして、ここにも。And there it is, too.

でも、みんな飛んでないんです。なぜか。- But for some reasons, none of them were flying.  Why?

彼らはエネルギー節約のために、グライドするのが好きなんです。だから、地面が温められた午後、上昇気流に乗って、あまり羽をパタパタさせることなくグライドするんですね。だから、こんな日は、頑張らない。カラスやタカたちは風に向かってパタパタしても、全然前に進んでいませんでした。成長した白頭鷲はそんなバカなことは最初からしないんですね。 – It’s because they like to glide in the air to save their energy.  To do that, they go out in the afternoon, because an ascending air current is created by the Sun heating the ground.  Ravens and some hawks were trying to fly but were mostly blown away by the wind or struggled just to stay in one place.  So adult eagles didn’t fly on such a day.

「残念だけど、もう帰ろう。今日は期待できないよ。」と私。ところが突然、ジャーン！遠くからでもちゃんと認識できる大きな鳥。こっちに向かってこようとしている。- “Let’s go home.  We can’t expect to see any eagles today,” said I.  But suddenly a large bird appeared in front of us. Although it was far away, we could recognize that it’s trying to come our way.  Here it is.

「これは、何？イヌワシ？それとも・・・」と、私。　- “What is this?  Is it a Golden eagle? or…” said I.

ばんちゃんが「白頭鷲の若鶏だよ。」- “It’s an immature Bald Eagle” said Banchan.

一気にテンションが上がります。 – Immediately, I felt invigorated with those words.

もう一羽見つけました。- We found another one.

これも白頭鷲の若鳥かな？と思っていたんですが、よくよく観察して見ると、違う。- We thought this was also an immature Bald Eagle. But after a careful observation, we concluded that, in fact, it wasn’t.

これは、イヌワシの若鳥です。やった〜！！！ついにイヌワシも撮れた！- This is an immature Golden Eagle.  Woohoo!!! Finally, I’ve gotten a Golden Eagle, too!

ところで、若鳥の見分けは難しいですよね。そこでウェブでお勉強して見るとわかりました。腕を広げた時の脇の下が白いのは白頭鷲で、そうじゃないのはイヌワシ。そして、尾の模様が違います。茶色の部分がイヌワシの方が広いです。- By the way, it’s very difficult to identify immature eagles.  So I studied up on Bald Eagles and Golden Eagles.  And these are my findings.  Immature Bald Eagles have white underwing sockets when they open their wings.  But immature Golden Eagles don’t.  The tail patterns are also different.  Golden Eagles have wider brown tips than bald eagles.

最初の2枚は2-3年成長した白頭鷲の若鳥。次の2枚は1-2年成長したイヌワシの若鳥じゃないかなーと思います。- The first two pictures are 2 or 3 year immature Bald Eagles.  The following two pictures are 1 to 2 year immature Golden Eagles.  That’s my educated guess based on my study.

それにしても、こんな嵐の日に元気に飛んでいるのは若鳥だけなんて、人間も同じね。- By the way, it’s funny that only immature eagles (young) were flying even in the strong wind.  It’s kind of same with humans, isn’t it?

おまけ版。これがこの日のイヌワシのベストショットでした。力強く風に向かって飛ぶ姿、いいですよね。でも、これを最初から使うのには気が引けました。- This is an extra.  The shot below is an immature Golden Eagle flying against the wind, the best shot of the day.  But I wasn’t comfortable using it.

なぜなら、フォトショップで電線を取り除いたからです。これがオリジナル。言わなければわからない。フォトショップ、すごいね。- That’s because there were electrical lines crossing in front of it’s left wing which I removed using Photoshop.  This is the original.  I know you might never have noticed it if I didn’t say so, right?  Photoshop is indeed powerful.
