鯨が眠る海　The Sea Where Whales Sleep

南極の海は静かでした。　It was calm in the Antarctic seas.

マダラフルマカモメがザトウクジラの後をつけていく光景はよく見かけました。　We often saw the sight of Cape petrels following humpback whales.

なぜなら食べ物が同じだからです。オキアミが大量に住んでいる南極の海を目指して鯨が帰って来ます。マダラフルマカモメもオキアミを食べるので、ザトウクジラの後をつけていればおこぼれにありつけるんですね。 Because they share the same food source. Whales return to the Antarctic seas where krill thrive in vast numbers. Since the Cape petrels also feeds on krill, following the humpback whales allows them to pick up the scraps.

ザトウクジラは時々体を動かしていましたが、それでもとても静かです。なぜなら眠っているからです。ジェンツーペンギンもオキアミを貰いにクジラの周りに集まっていました。　The humpback whale occasionally moved its body, yet remained very still. Why? Because it was asleep. Gentoo penguins also gathered around the whale to receive krill.

静かに、静かに、体を浮かせているだけでした。　Quietly, quietly, it merely floated its body.

時々、シンクロナイズスイミングをしているかのようにクルクルと胴体を回転させていました。　Occasionally, he would spin his torso round and round as if performing synchronized swimming.

そして、突然頭をぐっと持ち上げて、ストレッチをしているようでした。口の中のクジラヒゲが少し見えますね。　Then, suddenly, it lifted its head sharply, as if stretching. You can see a bit of the baleen in its mouth.

クジラのお腹を見たのは初めてだったので、必死にカメラのシャッターを押しました。　It was the first time I’d ever seen a whale’s belly, so I pressed the camera shutter frantically.

こちらは背中側からのショットです。上顎にクジラヒゲがびっしりと生えているのが見えます。　This is a shot from the rear. You can see the upper jaw densely covered in baleen plates.

クジラが海水をすくった後の姿です。海水が横から流れ出ているのがわかります。いったい何千匹のオキアミが口の中に残ったのでしょうか？　This is the whale after it has scooped up seawater. You can see the seawater flowing out from the sides. Just how many thousands of krill might have remained in its mouth?

こうして、ゆっくりと時が流れていきました。オキアミをたくさん食べて眠くなったのかもしれません。クジラはあまり動かなくなり、静寂が再び戻って来ました。　And so, time passed slowly. Perhaps having eaten plenty of krill, the whale grew drowsy. It moved less and less, and silence returned once more.

下の写真、大きな２つの穴はザトウクジラの噴気孔です。 In the photograph below, the two large holes are the humpback whale’s blowholes.

さて、所かわってこちらはサウスジョージア島のエルセフルベイです。ラッキーなことに、ミナミセミクジラに出会いました。顔の前からのショットです。ミナミセミクジラの体についているベージュ色の突起は角質化された皮膚です。これらは小さな甲殻類の住処となります。　Now, moving on to Elsehul Bay in the South Georgia Island. We were fortunate enough to encounter a Southern Right whale. This is a shot taken from directly in front of its face. The beige objects on the whale’s body are rough patches of skin known as callosities. They provide habitat for small crustaceans.

口の周りにはヒゲが生えているのでしょうか。 Is there a beard growing around his mouth?

人懐こくて優しいクジラだとされています。私も含めて、写真家達は夢中になって写真を撮っていました。 They are considered to be friendly and gentle whales. Photographers, myself included, were completely absorbed in taking pictures.

私たちのゴムボートには近づいてくれませんでしたが、逃げていこうとはしませんでした。 It did not approach our zodiac, but it did not attempt to flee either.

どれほどの時間が過ぎたのでしょうか。私たちはもちろんのこと、ミナミセミクジラもきっと楽しいひと時を過ごしたに違いありません。 How much time had passed? We certainly had a splendid time, and the Southern Right whale must surely have enjoyed itself too.

ミナミセミクジラは尾鰭を上げてお別れの挨拶をして去っていきました。　It raised its tail fin in farewell and swam away.

シャグロック Shag Rocks

サウスジョージア島からフォークランド諸島に向かう途中に6島の小島があり、シャグロックと呼ばれています。En route from South Georgia to the Falkland Islands, there are six small islands known as Shag Rocks.

シャグは英語で鵜のことです。これらの小島にはシャグが住んでいることからシャグロックと呼ばれるようになりました。 Shag is aka cormorant. These small islands came to be called Shag Rocks because shags inhabit them.

ナンキョクムナジロヒメウが岩の表面を埋め尽くしていました。 この種は南極からフォークランド諸島ぐらいまでの緯度に住んでいます。（注： 日本語ではこの鳥の名前は一つですが、英語では Antarctic Shag, Antarctic Commorant, Imperial Shag, Imperial Commorant, Blue-eyed Shag など、多くの名で呼ばれていますが、すべて同じ鳥です。始めは混乱しました。)　Antarctic Shags covered the rock surface. This species inhabits latitudes from Antarctica to the Falkland Islands. (Note: While this bird has a single name in Japanese, it is known by many names in English – Antarctic Shag, Antarctic Cormorant, Imperial Shag, Imperial Cormorant, Blue-eyed Shag – all referring to the same bird. I was initially confused.)

南極初日に雪の中、この鳥とペンギンと間違えて以来、行く先々で数千枚もの写真を撮って来ました。それにしてもこの量は圧巻です。　Ever since mistaking this bird for a penguin on my first day in Antarctica amidst the snow, I’ve taken thousands of Shag pictures wherever I’ve gone. Even so, this sheer volume is truly impressive.

船の甲板に出ると、大量のヒメウが上空を飛んでいました。その量の多さに圧倒されました。　Upon stepping out onto the ship’s deck, I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of shags overhead.

その中の数羽は船の上に舞い降りて来そうでした。 Some of them seemed poised to alight upon the ship.

そのおかげで真下から飛ぶ姿を観察することができました。 Thanks to that, I was able to observe it flying from directly below.

こちらはヒメウが海面に急降下する直前の姿です。そのあとは追いきれませんでした。 These shots below are the moment just before the Shag dives steeply towards the sea surface. After that, I couldn’t keep up.

こうして海中深くまで潜り魚を捕まえます。 This is how they dive deep into the sea to catch fish.

南極のナンキョクムナジロヒナウ　Antarctic Shag at Antarctica

野生動物の行動を観察するのは本当に楽しいですね。 Observing wildlife behavior is truly delightful.

ところで、近くから観察できたおかげで気がついたことがありました。ナンキョクムナジロヒメウの目は青いのだと思っていました。遠くから見るとそう見えるんですね。 On another note, observing them up close revealed something I hadn’t realised before. I’d always thought the eyes of the Antarctic shag were blue. It turns out that’s just how they appear from a distance.

前からのショットはイマイチです。The front shot doesn’t look so good.
お昼寝中。Taking a nap.

こちらの写真は、お昼寝最中のナンキョクムナジロヒメウですが、目を閉じていても青い。ということは、青い部分は目の周りにある皮膚なんですね。　These photographs show Antarctic shags in the midst of their afternoon nap, yet even with their eyes closed, it appears blue. This indicates that the blue colouration is actually the skin surrounding the eyes.

この角度が一番いいですね。This angle is the best.

場所は変わってフォークランド諸島、例のシェアハウスの光景です。 The scene shifts to the Falkland Islands, back to that shared house.

まだ巣作りをしている最中のヒメウや、まだ卵を温めているおかあさんがいました。　There were Antarctic shags still busy building their nests, and mothers still brooding over their eggs.

こちらはすでに孵化したヒナの世話をするヒメウたちです。　These are the Shags tending to their already hatched chicks.

ナンキョクムナジロヒメウのヒナは羽毛が全く生えていない状態で生まれてきます。上の写真を見ると、フワフワの羽毛が生え揃っているようですが、頭にはまだ生えていないことがわかります。生まれてから3週間ぐらいで生えそろうそうです。その間、寒さで死んでしまわないようにお母さんヒメウがずーっと座り続けて温め、お父さんヒメウはせっせと餌を運んでくるということらしいです。　The chicks of the Antarctic shag are born completely featherless. Looking at the photo above, it appears they have grown a full set of fluffy feathers, but you can see their heads are still bare. It is said that they take about three weeks after hatching for their feathers to fully grow in. During this time, the mother shag apparently sits constantly to keep them warm so they don’t freeze to death, while the father shag diligently brings them food.

早く空高く飛びたいと願うのは雛鳥だけじゃなく、親鳥も同じ。でも、羽毛が生え揃ったらすぐ巣立ちするということです。ふーん、なんだか短すぎる気がしますが、同時に野生動物の逞しさを感じます。 Chicks aren’t the only ones eager to soar high in the sky; their parents feel the same. Yet, once their feathers are fully grown, they leave the nest immediately. Hmm, I can’t help but feel it’s all rather too brief, yet at the same time, I sense the resilience of wild creatures.

この日、私たちはサウスジョージア島の北、エルセフルベイをゴムボートでクルーズしました。　One day, we cruised in a zodiac around Elsehul Bay, north of South Georgia Island.

アホウドリのコロニーを崖の上に見上げ、なぜ彼らが崖っぷちを選ぶのか理解しました。 Looking up at the Albatross colony perched on the cliff, I understood why they choose the very edge.

彼らは他の大きな鳥と同じようにダイナミックソアリングを繰り返して空を飛びます。そのため、高い崖っぷちが便利なのです。 They fly through the air by repeatedly performing dynamic soaring, just like other large birds. For this reason, high cliff edges are convenient.

マユグロアホウドリ　Black-browed Albatross

その代わり、水面から飛び立つ時は大変な労力を必要とします。飛び立てないと思わせるぐらい長いこと水上を走って勢いをつけて飛び立ちます。 In return, taking off from the water’s surface requires tremendous effort. They run across the water for so long to build up momentum that it makes you think they cannot take flight.

マユグロアホウドリ　Black-browed Albatross

こちらはハイガシラアホウドリです。　This is the Gray-headed albatross.

マユグロアホウドリと同じように、彼らも目から鼻にかけて非常に美形です。　Like the Black-browed albatross, they too are exceptionally handsome from the eyes to the nose.

両種とも仲良く午後の気持ちの良い日を過ごしているようでした。　Both seemed to be getting along well and enjoying the pleasant afternoon.

さて、変わってこちらはフォークランド諸島のニューアイランドです。ニシロックホッパーペンギンの時もご紹介した例のシェアハウスです。相変わらず混み合っています。マユグロアホウドリ、ニシロックホッパーペンギン、そしてナンキョクムナジロヒメウがそれぞれ子育てに忙しい。　Now, moving on to New Island in the Falkland Islands. This is the same shared house I mentioned when introducing the Western Rockhopper penguin. It remains as crowded as ever. The Black-browed Albatross, Western Rockhopper, and Antarctic shag are all busy raising their young.

みんな命のバトンを渡していくために、疑うことなく今を精一杯生きているように見えました。こちらはマユグロアホウドリの求愛ダンス。 For the sake of passing on the baton of life, everyone seemed to be living in the present moment to the fullest, without a shred of doubt.　Here is the courtship dance of the Black-browed albatross.

マユグロアホウドリの巣は丸い桶のようです。しっかりとできているので、崖っぷちでも卵やヒナが転げ落ちる心配はなさそうです。　The nests of the Black-browed albatross resemble round tubs. They are so well constructed that there seems little risk of eggs or chicks tumbling over the cliff edge.

卵が孵化するまでに2.5ヶ月、巣立ちまで3ヶ月以上かかると言われています。 It is said that it takes 2.5 months for the eggs to hatch and over 3 months for the young to fledge.

ここ南半球では、巣立ちの頃はすでに冬を迎えているのでしょうか。　Here in the southern hemisphere, is it already winter by the time the young birds leave the nest?

その頃は、こんな風に成長しているんですね。頑張れよ、ヒナ達！　By then, you’ll have grown like this, won’t you? Keep at it, chicks!

マゼランの結婚式 Magellan’s Wedding

2026年1月の良き日にマゼランペンギンの結婚式がありました。遠い所からも参加者が次々に集まってきます。 On a fine day in January 2026, a Magellanic penguin wedding took place. Guests gathered one after another, some traveling from afar.

こちらの方々は待ち疲れてお昼寝モードに入ってしまいました。 These folks have grown weary of waiting and have drifted off for a nap.

こちらは美しい花嫁さんです。彼女は準備万端です。 This is the beautiful bride. She is all set.

こちらの出席者はすでに定位置についています。 The attendees here are already seated in their designated places.

こちらは花婿と祭司役のペンギンです。ただ、困ったことに花婿のお腹がまだ綺麗になっていないことを祭司さんに注意されています。 Here are the groom and the priest. However, the priest is pointing out that the groom’s belly still needs cleaning.

確かに、もっと綺麗に洗ってもらいたかったですね。でも、もう手遅れです。花嫁が来てしまいました。 Indeed, I would have preferred it to have been cleaned more thoroughly. But it’s too late now. The bride has arrived.

何はともあれ、無事に結婚式が終了しました。おめでとう！ In any case, the wedding ceremony has come to a successful conclusion. Congratulations!

こちらは「次は私の番ね。」と思っている参加者でした。　This was a participant who thought, “Next it’s my turn.”

おまけ：　結婚式の後、出席者達は帰っていきましたが、興味があったので追跡調査をしました。　Bonus: After the wedding, the guests departed, but I was curious, so I conducted a follow-up investigation.

参加者の多くは海の近くには住んでいませんでした。しばらく歩いていくと、遠くにマゼランの子供を発見しました。　Most participants did not appear to live near the sea. After walking for a while, I spotted a child in the distance.

おやおや？ペンギンが地面に掘られた穴蔵の中でお昼寝しています。　Oh, dear! A penguin was taking a nap inside a burrow dug into the ground.

近くにいた土まみれの若者に聞いてみました。どうやらクチバシで穴を掘って家を作るとのことでした。 I asked a young penguin nearby, covered in dirt. Apparently, they dig holes with their beaks to make homes.

そういうことなんですね! So that’s how it is!

これで結婚式の花婿の汚れたお腹の説明がついた気がしました。もしかしたらお腹が土まみれのペンギン達は家作りをしっかりするペンギン達。だから私たち人間の常識とは逆で、好まれるペンギンなのかもしれません。　This seemed to explain the groom’s soiled belly at the wedding. Perhaps the penguins with dirt-covered bellies are the ones who build their nests properly. So, contrary to our human common sense, they might be the preferred kind of penguin.

以上、駆け足になってしまいましたが、これで7種のペンギンの紹介を終了します。出会いたいペンギン全てに出会えて本当にラッキーでした。これで私の旅の目標の一つに大きく ☑️ をつけられました。　That concludes my introduction to the seven species of penguin, albeit rather rushed. I was truly fortunate to encounter every penguin I hoped to see during my trip. This allows me to place a big ☑️ against one of my travel goals.

断崖絶壁のシェアハウス　Share House at Precipice-edge

前回のブログでマカロニペンギンについてきました。今回は同じイワトビペンギン属の仲間のニシイワトビペンギンについて書きます。　In my previous blog post, I covered the Macaroni penguin. This time, I shall write about the Western Rockhopper penguin, a fellow member of the same genus, Eudyptes.

マカロニの黄色い羽飾りは豪華ですが、イワトビの飾りは黄色い鉢巻を巻いて尖った髪の毛を上に持ち上げてるように見えます。　The macaroni’s yellow feather crest is splendid, but the rockhopper’s adornment resembles a yellow headband wrapped around its head, lifting its spiky hair upwards.

また、遠くから見ると黄色い眉毛が目のようで、ちょっとヤクザ風です。　Moreover, from a distance, the yellow eyebrows resemble eyes, giving him a slightly yakuza-like appearance.

さて、本題です。ニシロックホッパーペンギンの住むフォークランド諸島内のニューアイランド島の海岸線は、立地条件が良いこともあり大人気です。　Now, to the main point. The coastline of New Island, part of the Falkland Islands where Western Rockhopper Penguins reside, is immensely popular, partly due to its favorable location.

人間の世界も動物の世界も、良い場所での家探しは難航するんですね。　Whether in the human world or the animal world, finding a home in a good location is a difficult task, isn’t it.

下の写真を観察すると、アホウドリとペンギンが写っています。ここの住人です。（右手前はペンギンやアホウドリのヒナを食するフォークランドカラカラで、断じて住人ではありません。）　Observing the photograph below, you can see albatrosses and penguins. They are residents here in this shared community. (The bird in the foreground on the right is a Striated caracara, which preys on penguin and albatross chicks; it is definitely not a resident.)

もう一種の住人はズグロムナジロヒメウです。 Another resident is the Antarctic shag.

これらの3種の鳥がこの場所をシェアハウスとして使っているんですね。非常に混雑していましたが、それでもうまく共存できているんですね。　These three species of birds share this place as a share house, you see. It was extremely crowded, yet they still manage to coexist quite well.

でも、時々不満が爆発して「この状況、もう我慢できないよう」と、叫んでいる（かもしれません。）　But sometimes the birds’ discontent boils over, and they cry out, ‘We can’t stand this situation any longer!’ (or so it may be.)

彼らは子育てにとても熱心なので、尚更です。　They are particularly keen on child-rearing, so all the more reason.

それでも、子供達は楽しそうにスクスクと育っていました。　Despite this, the children were happily growing up.

下のビデオをご覧ください。子供ペンギンの元気な様子がわかります。ビデオスピードを50％落としても、まだまだ元気です。　Please watch the video below. You can see how lively the baby penguins are. Even when the video speed is slowed to 50%, they are still full of energy.

こちらは、彼らの住宅地を上から見た所です。『ウォーリーを探せ』『ペンギンを探せ』ゲームです。何びき見つけられますか？　This is a bird’s-eye view of their residential area. It’s a “Where’s Waldo?” “Where’s Penguins?” game. How many Rockhopper penguins can you spot?

ファッションのメッカ The Fashion Mecca

ここはファッションのメッカ、ゴールドハーバーの目抜通りです。ご覧ください、このオオサマペンギンで埋め尽くされた河岸。This is the high street of Gold Harbour, the fashion mecca. Behold this riverbank, completely covered in King penguins.

みんなユニークな装いをしています。（注：本当は、年に一度の換羽が終了するのを待っているだけです。） Everyone is dressed uniquely. (Note: They’re actually just waiting for their annual molting to finish.)

どのペンギンもスタイリッシュで素敵でした。その中でも、私が選んだファッショナブルなキングペンギン、ベスト10をここでご紹介します。 Every penguin was stylish and splendid. Among them, I present here my top ten fashionable king penguins.

憧れのサウスジョージア島へ To the Long-awaited South Georgia Island

エレファント島を後にして2日が経っていました。　Two days had passed since leaving Elephant Island.

3日目の朝、客室の窓から島が見えました。「これこそ、待ちに待った憧れのサウスジョージア島以外にありえない！」　On the morning of the third day, an island came into view from the cabin window. “This must be the long-awaited, dream destination of South Georgia Island!”

さっそくカメラを持って甲板に飛び出しました。 I promptly grabbed my camera and dashed out onto the deck.

ゾウアザラシのような氷山 An iceberg resembling an Elephant Seal

何もないような風景ですが、500mmの望遠レンズレンズで見ると、見えてきました。海岸線を埋め尽くしているのはペンギンたちでした。 The landscape appeared devoid of anything, but viewed through a 500mm telephoto lens, it came into view. What filled the coastline were penguins.

船はどんどん島に近づいて、一番目の寄港地、ゴールドハーバーにつきました。 The ship steadily approached the island and arrived at its first stop, Gold Harbour.

この風景を見て、前夜のブリーフィングで、驚かされたことを思い出しました。 Looking at this scenery, I recalled how shocked I had been during the briefing the night before.

「動物達が海岸を埋め尽くしていたら上陸できないかもしれない。」 “If the animals were swarming all over the shore, we might not be able to land.”

この日も、いつものように化学班がまず調査に入りました。ゴムボートがランディングできる場所を確保するためです。 On this day too, the scientist team commenced their survey as usual. This was to secure a location where the zodiac could land.

上陸できることを確認し、私たちはゴムボートで島の周辺を見てまわりました。 Having confirmed we could land, we took a zodiac to survey the island’s surroundings.

実は、私はゴムボート見学は好きになれませんでした。なぜなら、私より体格の大きい人たちばかりが同船しているので、誰かの頭がいい風景をじゃましているということが多々あったからです。 To be honest, I never really liked zodiac tours. This was because the zodiac was invariably filled with people larger than me, meaning someone’s head was often obstructing the view.

だから、いい写真を撮ろうと思うことを諦めました。そうじゃないと、フラストレーションが溜まるだけですからね。それでも、たくさん面白いショットが撮れました。　So I gave up trying to take good photographs. Otherwise, it just builds up frustration. Even so, I managed to capture plenty of interesting shots.

まず、こちらをご覧ください。ジェンツーペンギンとナンキョクムナジロヒメウが海水飛ばしゲームをしていました。　First, take a look at these. A Gentoo penguin and an Antarctic Shag were playing a game of splashing seawater.

これできる？ Can you do this?
もちろん。どう？ Of course. How about it?
なんだか冴えないね。 Somehow it’s not your best, is it?
ちょっと休憩ね。 Right, time for a break.
僕たち海水飛ばしゲームをする友達。 We’re friends who play splat-the-sea-water games.

次にミナミゾウアザラシに登場していただきます。 The next to appear were the Southern elephant seals.

繁殖期には陸地に上がってのんびりするようです。During the breeding season, they appear to come ashore to relax.
サウスジョージア島は世界最大のミナミゾウアザラシの繁殖地として有名です。　South Georgia Island is renowned as the world’s largest breeding colony for southern elephant seals.
大抵の場合、ゾウアザラシもペンギンもお互いを無視していますが、時々、抗争があるようです。　In most cases, elephant seals and penguins tend to ignore each other, but occasionally, there appear to be conflicts.
ペンギンの通り道にゾウアザラシがいると、熟年のペンギンが気をつけて通り抜けるようにまだ成長しきれていないペンギンをガイドします。　When elephant seals are present on the penguins’ path, mature penguins guide the younger ones that have not yet fully grown to pass through with care.
あ、これはまずい！子供ペンギンがゾウアザラシにチョッカイを出そうとしています。　Oh dear, this is not good! The baby penguin is trying to pester the elephant seal.
ゾウアザラシは懐中深く潜ることができるので、大きな魚を食します。でも、ペンギンを食したという記録もあるので、気をつけなければいけません。　Elephant seals can dive to great depths, so they feed on large fish. However, there are also records of them eating penguins, so one must be careful.
繁殖期が終わると、彼らは海に帰っていきます。でも、まだ産まれたばかりの子供たちはシャチやヒョウアザラシに捕食されてしまうことがおおいとのことです。　Once the breeding season ends, they return to the sea. However, it is said that many of the newly born pups are often preyed upon by Killer whales and Leopard seals.

ミナミゾウアザラシと比べるとグッと小さく、人間と同じぐらいの大きさのナンキョクオットセイです。 Compared to the Southern elephant seal, the Antarctic fur seal is considerably smaller, being about the same size as a human.

この日ゴールドハーバーとセントアンドリュースベイに上陸できました。興奮してオウサマペンギンの写真を撮り続け、その数は14000枚にものぼりました。まだどう処理したらいいかわからないので、ゴムボートの上から撮ったビデオと写真数枚だけをご紹介します。　　On this day, we were able to land at Gold Harbour and St Andrews Bay. Excitedly, I kept taking photographs of the King Penguins, the number of which reached as high as 14,000. As I still don’t know how to process them all, I’ll just share a few photographs and a video taken from the zodiac.

私たちはこの島で南から北西に向かって8ヶ所も訪れました。次回のブログはその中からハイライトをいくつか選んでご紹介します。 On this island, we visited no fewer than eight locations, travelling from south to northwest. In my next blog post, I shall select a few highlights from among them to share with you.

南極大陸に立つ　Standing on the Antarctic Continent

1月1日の午後、私たちの船は南極半島のパラダイスハーバーに着きました。そこからゴムボートで東海岸にあるブラウンステーションへ向かい、無事、南極大陸に上陸できました。人生初の大陸への上陸です。パチパチパチ！　In the afternoon of January 1st, our ship arrived at Paradise Harbour at the Antarctic Peninsula. From there, we travelled by a zodiac to Brown Station on the east coast and successfully landed on the Antarctic continent. It was our first time setting foot on the Antarctic continent. Clap, clap, clap!

下の写真はゴムボートから撮ったブラウンステーションです。丘の上を人が歩いてます。黒い点はペンギンです。 The photograph below shows Brown Station taken from the zodiac. Can you see people walking on the hill, and penguins around them that look like dots?

私たちも丘の上を行けるところまで歩いていきました。結構キツイ登りでした。優しいジェンツーペンギンも一緒に登って励ましてくれました。　We too walked up the hill as far as we could manage. It was quite a strenuous climb. The gentle Gentoo penguins climbed alongside us, offering encouragement.

頂上からブラウンステーションを見下ろしました。ここは比較的温厚な場所なので観光客がよく訪れる場所だと聞きました。　From the summit, I looked down upon Brown Station. I heard that this is a relatively mild spot, so it’s a place often visited by tourists.

ブラウンステーションは夏の間だけ使われているとのことでした。　I was told that Brown Station is only used during the summer months.

美しい場所でした。It was a beautiful spot.

こんな景色を撮るには24-105mmレンズが最適でした。でも、私のレンズは旅の1日目に壊れてしまったので使えませんでした。100-500mmのレンズを持って丘を登ったのは私ぐらいだと思います。ここには野生動物がいなかったので。一度もカメラのシャッターを押すことなくゴムボートに乗船しました。　A 24-105mm lens would have been ideal for capturing such scenery. But mine broke on the first day of the trip, so I couldn’t use it. I reckon I was the only one who lugged a 100-500mm lens up the hill. There wasn’t any wildlife here. I boarded the zodiac for the return trip without ever pressing the camera shutter once.

「携帯だって、いいよね。こんなにいい写真が撮れるよ。」と、自分を慰めていました。　I consoled myself, thinking, ‘Mobile phones are fine, aren’t they? They take such good photos.’

ところが、その後、ものすごいプレゼントをもらうことになりました。　However, I ended up receiving an absolutely incredible present afterwards.

ザトウクジラが現れてくれたんです。これこそ私のレンズの出番です。クジラ君、ありがとう！　A humpback whale appeared before us. It was the perfect moment for my lens. Thank you, whale!

ところで、この日ゴムボートから見たペンギンはアデリーペンギンでした。　Incidentally, the penguins we saw from the zodiac that day were Adélie penguins.

氷山の上で何を考えているでしょうか。　What might it be thinking upon the iceberg?

あ、そうか、ペンギン滑り台があったんですね。 Ah, I see, there was a penguin slide.

2026年元旦 New Year’s Day 2026

1ヶ月以上も遅れてしまいましたが、新年のご挨拶、おめでとうございます。 I am terribly sorry for the delay of over a month, but I wish you a Happy New Year.

さて、私の2026年の1月1日の朝はこんな景色から始まりました。 Well, my morning on January 1st, 2026 began with this view.

その日最初に訪れたのは、南極のクーバービル島でした。 The first place we visited that day was Cuverville Island in Antarctica.

上の写真も下の写真もすべてジェンツーペンギンです。島に近づくとこんな風景が飛び込んできました。黒い豆粒はみんなジェンツーです。 Both the top and bottom photographs show Gentoo penguins. As we approached the island, this scene came into view. Every black speck is a Gentoo.

上陸すると、すでに船のスタッフが赤い旗を立てて、許可されている区域とされていない区域とを区分していました。 Upon landing, the ship’s crew had already erected red flags to demarcate the permitted areas from those that were off-limits.

「あ、君たち人間はあっちねー。」と、ジェンツーペンギンも道路整理に参加していました。 “Ah, you humans over there, eh?” said the Gentoo penguin, joining in with directing traffic.

さて、ジェンツーペンギンは王妃が被るようなカチューシャをしています。ローマの休日のオードリーヘップバーンがしていた白いカチューシャのようだと思いませんか？ Now then, the Gentoo penguin wears a headband like one a queen might wear. Doesn’t it remind you of the white headband Audrey Hepburn wore in Roman Holiday?

後ろから見ると、宝石が散りばめられているようで、もっと綺麗。このカチューシャがお嬢様みたいに見える一因です。ヒゲペンギンがヘルメットを被ったおっさんなら、ジェンツーペンギンはお嬢様です。 Viewed from behind, it looks as though jewels are scattered across it, making it even more beautiful. This is one reason why this headband makes her look like a young lady. If the chinstrap penguin is a helmet-wearing tough guy, then the gentoo penguin is an elegant lady.

ここでジェンツーを例にとって、ペンギン全種の体の部位を観察してみましょう。まず足。足の指が3本で、アヒルのように指と指の間には水かきがついています。一つ注目したいのは、実は4本目の足指が内側のくるぶしあたりについていることです。犬みたいですね。 Taking the Gentoo penguin as an example, let us observe the body parts of all penguin species. First, the feet. They have three toes, with webbing between them like a duck’s. One point worth noting is that they actually possess a fourth toe attached near the inner ankle. Rather like a dog, isn’t it?

次に尻尾です。こんなに長い尻尾がついているとは思いませんでした。 Next is the tail. I hadn’t realised it had such a long tail.

鳥類なのに翼が進化したフリッパーです。 It’s a flipper that evolved wings despite being a bird.

そして、最後に白と黒の体について。これはカウンターシェーディングと言われています。体の前面はフリッパーの内側も含めて白です。海底の捕食者から身を守るためです。白い色は海の下の方から上を見上げた時に見えにくい色だそうです。体の背面が黒いのは、空の捕食者から身を守るためです。 Finally, regarding the white and black body coloration. This is known as counter-shading. The front of the body, including the underside of the flippers, is white. This protects it from predators on the seabed. It is said that white is a color that is difficult to see when looking upwards from below in the sea. The black coloration on the back of the body protects it from predators in the sky.

ペンギン達は巣作りには石を使うようです。海岸から拾ってきた石は小高い丘まで運ばれて、こんな感じの巣の材料となります。　Penguins appear to use stones for nest-building. Stones collected from the shore are carried up to a small hill, where they become nest-building materials like this.

産まれてきたヒナ達は、しばらくの間お母さんのお腹の下で生活します。　The newly hatched chicks stay under their mother’s belly for a while.

こちらのお母さんは疲れていそうですね。もう体がしっかりしてきている双子を育てるのはやはり大変そうだ。　This mother looks rather tired. Raising twins who are already quite sturdy must be quite a challenge.

今日のビデオは、ジェンツーペンギンのヒナのお食事風景です。　Today’s video shows a Gentoo penguin chick having its meal.

この日は2026年の新年初日とあってアクティビティーがてんこ盛りでした。おかげで写真の数が多過ぎて私のマックがうまく作動しません。ですので、続きは次回書きます。　This day, being New Year’s Day 2026, the activities were packed in. As a result, I have far too many photos and my Mac isn’t coping well. So I’ll write the rest next time.

大晦日を南極で　New Year’s Eve In Antarctica

2025年の大晦日、その日の予定が発表されていました。TBDと書かれていましたが、実際にメルキオール諸島へゴムボートでクルーズできました。　On New Year’s Eve 2025, the day’s schedule had been announced. It was marked as TBD, but we actually managed to cruise to the Melchior Islands and explore by zodiac.

初のアイスバーグ。 First iceberg.

初めてのゴムボートクルーズなのでみんなもたついています。 It’s everyone’s first time on a zodiac cruise, so they’re all a bit nervous.

みんな楽しそうに、でも、どんな景色ものが住まいと必死に写真を撮っていました。でも私は少し冷めた目で、泣きながらGoProを使っていました。こんな時には絶対に必要な中距離用のレンズですが、ブエノスアイレスで破損させしまっていたからです。すると誰かが囁いてくれました。　Everyone was happily snapping photos of the scenery, desperately trying to capture their surroundings. But I was using my GoPro with a slightly detached look, crying. A mid-range lens is absolutely essential in moments like this, but I’d broken mine in Buenos Aires. Then someone whispered to me.

それは残念だったね。　That’s too bad.

エッ！？　Huh?

ぼくだったら、きっと、もっと落ち込んでるよ。　If it were me, I’d definitely be feeling way more down.

いやいや、もっと、もっと、落ち込む。　No, no, I’d be feeling even more down.

でもさ、大丈夫だよ。 But hey, it’s okay.

きっと、大丈夫だよ！ It’ll be okay, I’m sure!

わ、わ、わー！　ありがとう。でも、あなたは誰ですか？ Whoa, whoa, whoa! Thank you. But who are you?

僕は、ヒゲペンギンです。 I am a Chinstrap penguin.

ヨウッ！そこの人間、この辺にはウェッデルアザラシがいるから気をつけな。 Yo! You there, human. Watch out for Weddell seals around here.

と、ヘルメットを被ったおじさん達がアドバイスをくれました。 The helmeted men gave me some advice.

どうしようか？隠れるところないよねー。 What should we do? There’s nowhere to hide, huh.

うーん、でも多分大丈夫。このままじっとして動かなければ見つからないよ。 Hmm, but I think it’ll be okay. If I just stay still and don’t move, they won’t find me.

ほらね。 See?

あら？ペンギンさんですか？　Oh? You’re a penguin?

何を失礼な！私はナンキョクムナジロヒメウです。　How rude! I am a Antarctic Shag.

失礼いたしました。遠くからだと、ペンギンのように見えたので、パチパチ写真を撮っていました。　My apologies. Seeing you from afar, you looked like a penguin, so I was snapping away with my camera.

ビデオ：10人も乗るので窮屈でしたが、それなりに楽しかったです。 Video: The Zodiac was cramped with ten people, but it was fun in its own way.

こうして楽しい大晦日の夕刻が過ぎていきました。そして、もちろん大晦日のシャンペンも忘れずにいただき、年を締め括りました。 And so the joyful evening of New Year’s Eve passed. And of course, we didn’t forget to enjoy our New Year’s Eve champagne, bringing the year to a close.

真っ白なサヤハシチドリが、真っ白な雪の上から2026年への祝福をしてくれてくれているかのようでした。 The pure white Snowy sheathbill seemed to be offering blessings for 2026 from the pure white snow.

南緯60度　60 Degrees South Latitude

ドレイク海峡を抜けると南緯60度を超え、そこは南極地域と呼ばれます。軍事的利用の禁止や領有権の主張の凍結などが定められている場所です。　Passing through the Drake Passage takes you beyond 60 degrees south latitude, an area known as the Antarctic Ocean. This is a place where military use is prohibited and territorial claims are frozen.

また、南緯60度の線上には陸地が全くないということでも有名です。つまり、海底に住む生物はのぞいて、海も陸地すべて、地球上で、この場所においては誰も住んでないということになるんですね。空の上を飛んだり、海の中を泳いだりする生物はいますが、定住しないという意味です。他にもこういう場所があるかもしれませんが、少なくともこの場所しか知らない私にとっては、訳もわからず嬉しくなってしまう雑学となりました。　It’s also famous for having absolutely no land at 60 degrees south latitude. That means, except for sea creatures living on the ocean floor, neither the sea nor the land at this location on Earth is inhabited by anyone. There are creatures that fly through the air or swim in the sea, but this refers to those that do not settle permanently. There might be other places like this, but for me—who only knows this one spot—it became a piece of trivia that inexplicably made me happy.

そこではマダラフルカモメとギンフルマカモメが家族のようになって飛んでいました。彼らはほぼ同じ物を食べるので、必然、一緒に飛ぶことになるようです。　There, the Cape Petrel and the Southern Fulmar flew together like family. Since they eat almost the same kinds of food, it seems inevitable that they end up flying together.

ここでも空飛ぶ鳥を撮る練習をしていました。時々、ペンギンみたいに飛ぶ鳥もいて笑ってしまいました。 Here too, I practiced photographing birds in flight. Sometimes I’d see birds flying like penguins, which made me laugh.

さて、少しこれらの鳥の説明をさせてもらいます。これらの鳥はフルマカモメ属に分類されています。大きな特徴は、嘴の上に鼻が付いていることです。　Now, let me explain a little about these birds. They are classified in the genus Fulmarus. A major characteristic is the presence of a Naricorns above the beak.

この鼻は大きく二つの役割をしますが、その一つに、凝縮された塩水を出すことがあげられます。海の生物を食べたり、海水を飲んだりするので、体内には大量の塩分が溜まります。そこで塩分を排出するメガニズムが作動して、時々この鼻から凝縮された塩分が流れ出てくるということです。 This nose serves two main purposes, one of which is to expel concentrated saltwater. Since they consume marine organisms and drink seawater, large amounts of salt accumulate inside their bodies. Consequently, a salt-excretion mechanism activates, causing concentrated saltwater to flow out of this nose periodically.

だから、時々、タラーっと鼻水が流れているように見えることがありますが、笑わないでくださいと、鳥学者さんが説明してくれました。 So, sometimes it might look like snot is dripping down, but please don’t laugh, the ornithologist explained.

南極へ To Antarctica

南極、サウスジョージア、フォークランド諸島の旅への出航の前日、ホテルでブリーフィングがありました。　The day before departure for our journey to Antarctica, South Georgia, and the Falkland Islands, a briefing was held at the hotel.

その後、私たちは最後の買い物のためにウシュアイアのダウンタウンに出かけました。この町ではマネキンもペンギンなんです。クリスマス直後だったので、まだ、赤いサンタの帽子をかぶってます。　After that, we headed to downtown Ushuaia for our final shopping. Even the mannequins in this town are penguins. Since it was just after Christmas, they were still wearing red Santa hats.

ホテルに帰る前、桟橋を覗いてみましたが、私たちの船はまだ入港していないようでした。　Before returning to the hotel, I peeked at the pier, but our ship didn’t seem to have docked yet.

でも翌朝、ホテルの部屋から桟橋を見たら、今まで以上に多くの船が見えました。　But the next morning, when I looked out from our hotel room, I could see even more ships than before.

さて、乗船です。　Now, boarding time.

乗船すると、私たちのスーツケース、その他の必需品は無事、部屋まで運ばれていました。その後、エクスペディション ジャケットと呼ばれる南極旅行用のジャケットの試着をしました。　Upon boarding, our suitcases and other essentials had been safely delivered to our cabin. After that, we tried on the expedition jackets designed for Antarctic travel.

このジャケットは優れもので、腕にIDカードを入れる場所があり、船のチェックイン、チェックアウト、それに私たちの部屋をアンロックする機能もついていました。　This jacket was excellent, featuring a pocket for an ID card on the sleeve, and it also had functions for ship check-in and check-out, as well as unlocking our room.

この他に、緊急避難訓練をしたりして時間はどんどん過ぎていき、いつの間にか船は桟橋を離れていました。　In addition to this, time flew by as we conducted emergency evacuation drills, and before we knew it, the ship had left the pier.

ウシュアイアの街を後ろに、これから20日間の船の旅に出る実感が徐々に湧いてきました。鳥インフルエンザの影響で、1年間延期しなければならなかった末の旅でした。　Leaving Ushuaia behind, the reality of embarking on a 20-day voyage gradually sank in. This journey had been postponed for a year due to the impact of avian influenza.

オオフルマカモメ Southern Giant Petrel

ちょうど、このオオフルマガモが船の側から羽ばたいていきました。南極の鳥で、1メートルぐらいの大きさです。羽を伸ばすと2メートルになると言われています。　Just then, this Southern Giant Petrel took flight from beside the ship. It’s an Antarctic bird, about one meter in size. It’s said that when it spreads its wings, it reaches two meters.

これから何百羽と見ることになるとは、この時は知りませんでした。 At that moment, I had no idea I would come to see hundreds of them.

こうして、初日は穏やかに過ぎていきました。 And so, the first day passed peacefully.

翌日、12月30日の日程が張り出されていました。 The schedule for the following day, December 30th, was posted.

注目は、バイオセキュリティーのチェックがあったことです。南極やそれぞれの島に上陸する際には、島の地面に触れることが許されているのは、支給されたブーツのみです。三脚もダメ、バックパックやカメラも手袋も全てダメです。地面に触れなくても、しゃがむことすら許されませんでした。だから、島に持って行くであろうすべての所持品を持って会場に行き、丁寧に検査されました。とりわけマジックテープ類、ジャケットのポケットの中、バックパックの底の方に溜まっていた小さな砂まで掃除機で吸い取られました。私の場合は、支給されたブーツの底の一角にカビのようなものが付着していたようなので、デッキで消毒してもらいました。　The key point was the biosecurity check. When landing in Antarctica or on any islands, only the issued boots are permitted to touch the ground. Tripods are forbidden, as are backpacks, cameras, gloves—absolutely everything. Even crouching down was forbidden, regardless of whether you touched the ground. Consequently, we took all belongings we planned to bring to the islands to the venue for meticulous inspection. Particular attention was paid to Velcro items, jacket pockets, and even the tiniest grains of sand accumulated at the bottom of backpacks, which were vacuumed out. In my case, a mold-like substance appeared to be attached to one corner of the sole of my issued boots, so they were disinfected on deck.

その後、夕食前に船長と船員たちの歓迎のご挨拶がありました。左側の制服を着た人たちはオフィサーです。キャプテンと共に7階のブリッジにいる人たちで、会う機会はほとんどありませんでした。右側の人たちはスタッフメンバーで、何らかのサイエンティストやスペシャリストです。だからほとんど毎日会っていました。　After that, the captain and crew gave a welcome address before dinner. The people in uniforms on the left are officers. They work alongside the captain on the bridge on the 7th floor, and we rarely had the chance to meet them. The people on the right are staff members, scientists or specialists of some kind. So we saw them almost every day.

その他、お掃除、料理、エンジンルーム、など、多くのスタッフメンバーがいました。こんなにたくさんの人たちが私たちのお世話を毎日してくれて、感謝の気持ちでいっぱいでした。記憶が不確かですが、乗客より船のスタッフメンバーの方が多かったと記憶しています。　Additionally, there were many staff members handling cleaning, cooking, the engine room, and more. I was filled with gratitude knowing so many people took care of us every day. My memory is a bit hazy, but I recall there were more crew members than passengers.

この日は更にフランシス ドレイクの世界一周の就航の話を聞かせてもらいました。なぜなら、彼の名前にちなんでつけられたドレイク海峡をこの夜まさに横切ろうとしていたからです。細かい説明は一切なく、超簡単に面白くスキットとしてまとめられていました。よかったら以下のビデオをみてください。（全て英語です。）スキットが始まってからビデオを撮り始めたので、最初の部分はビデオに収められていませんが、趣旨はわかるはずです。 On this day, we also heard about Sir Francis Drake’s circumnavigation voyage. This was because we were about to cross the Drake Passage that very night, named after him. There was no detailed explanation whatsoever; it was simply put together as a super easy and humorously fun skit. If you’d like, please watch the following video. I started recording the video after the skit began, so the opening part wasn’t captured, but you should get the gist.

実は、今まで一度も船酔いをしたことがなかったので、たかを括っていました。でも、ここは荒波で有名な場所です。人生初めての船酔いを経験し、舟酔い止めのパッチを耳の後ろに貼りました。そのおかげで、その後の航海は問題なく過ごせました。　Actually, I’d never gotten seasick before, so I was overconfident. But this is a place famous for rough seas. I experienced seasickness for the first time in my life and applied a seasickness patch behind my ear. Thanks to that, I was able to get through the rest of the voyage without any problems.

その後は海の上を飛ぶ鳥達を追いかけて、飛ぶ鳥のショットの練習をしました。ノドジロクロミズナギドリです。500枚ぐらい撮って、この2枚だけがなんとか見られるショットでした。　After that, I practiced photographing birds in flight by following the seabirds. This is a White-chinned Petrel. I took about 500 shots, and these two were the only ones that turned out somewhat decent.

フィルム時代の昔では到底できなかったことですよね。デジタルカメラならあとの498ショットはさっさと削除すればいいだけの話ですからね。（笑） Back in the film days, that would’ve been impossible, right? With a digital camera, you can just delete the remaining 498 shots in a flash. (lol)
