鳥の写真を撮りにザイオン国立公園の東側の地帯に一泊二日のステイケーションの予定でしたが、二泊三日になってしまったお話です。This is originally a story of our one night two days staycation east of Zion National Park for bird photography. But the trip ended up as a two nights three days trip instead.

なぜならザイオンの東の山中、泥の中に車がはまり込み、出られなくなってしまったからです。登り道は景色も良く、道も乾いていていました。でも、そこから北側に移り、ちょっとまずいよと思った時には遅かった。そこから下り坂になり雪と泥、深い溝が走っていて、道とは言えない道になってしまいました。悪夢のようにスローモッションで泥の中をスキーしている感じ。 It is because our car was completely stuck in the mud on a dirt road in the hills east of Zion. We had gone up a nice, dry ridge with beautiful views. Then we went down a north facing slope. Uh oh! There was so much mud and snow, and the road, if you could still call it that, was full of deep ruts. Going down was more like slow motion skiing in mud.

そして、安全な道まであと1kmもないぐらいのところまで来た時に、ついに深い溝にはまり、出られなくなってしまいました。泥の坂道は前にも後ろにも行く事を阻み、ついに諦めて 911 番（日本での110番）に助けを求めるしか手がないと判断しました。その後はRamsey’ Towing の救助部隊と連絡を取り合うことになりました。Finally we got to a flat area with only half a mile to go to a good dirt road. But then we got caught in a deep ravine. We could not go forward and going back up the muddy slope looked impossible. Unable to get ourselves out, we called 911 for help. They got us in touch with Ramsey’s Towing.

救助部隊は私たちがどこにいるのかわからないので、私たちが泥の山道を歩いて降りてから合流しました。そこから私たちの車まで泥道を登るはずでしたが、なんと小川が流れていていた！地図にない！それでも黄色いレッカー車は川を越えようとしましたが、川にはまってしまい、断念。この状況を考え、この日は断念して、翌日、逆ルートからアプローチすることになりました。Since they weren’t sure how to get to us, we walked the last half mile to the good dirt road to meet the rescuers. Then we all went back for our car. Unfortunately, despite the fact that their cars are so much more robust and can do anything, we needed to give up that day because a creek was running across the road. The yellow tow truck tried to cross, but it ended up stuck in the water because it was too deep.

翌日夜明け前、バンちゃんだけがレスキュー部隊と出かけ、私はホテルで待機することに しました。地面がまだ凍っている間に脱出するという計画です。Dawn on the next day, Banchan went out with the rescuers and I stayed at the hotel. Their plan was to get there and come back up the muddy slope while the ground was still frozen.

救助を求めるまで、必死になって道を作ろうとしていたので、私たちは泥だらけ。ホテルに入る前に綺麗にしても取れなかった泥。Until we gave up and called the rescue service, we tried to fill in the ditch enough to get by, but it didn’t work. That effort just made us completely muddy. We tried to make ourselves decent before going inside the hotel, but the mud on the boots didn’t come off very well.

ホテルで待機中、何もすることがなかったのでブーツの泥落としをしたら綺麗になったブーツ。While I was waiting for Banchan and his car to return, I cleaned my boots because I had nothing to do.

9時過ぎ、バンちゃんが救助された車を運転してホテルに帰ってきました。救助部隊に感謝です。After 9 o’clock, Banchan, driving our car, came back to the hotel. We are so grateful for the rescuer’s excellent work.

幸い、バンパーや車の下の一部が剥がれたりしただけで、車自体は問題なかったようです。 We were so lucky that our car was all right with just some minor damage.

車を山道に置いて山道を歩いてきた時に持ってきたものは、自分が持てるだけの本当に大切な物だけ。水、食べ物、財布、そして携帯のみ。カメラ2台、レンズ5本、スーツケースにその他諸々はやっぱり本当に大切な物じゃないということかな。 When we left our car in the mountain, we needed to choose what to bring with us. Of course, I brought down absolutely essential stuff that I could carry by myself; water, food, wallet, and cell phone. I reluctantly left my two cameras, five lenses, suitcase, toothbrush, etc. Yes, they are not my most essential stuff although they are my most precious.

帰り間際に見上げた空。カナブの町では熱気球フェスティバルが行われていました。もう2度としたくないアドベンチャーから解放された安堵のせいか、熱気球は平和のシンボルのように見えました。I looked up the sky before we left the hotel in Kanab. They had a hot-air balloon festival going on that day. The balloons looked a symbol of peace to me because I was so relieved from the extreme adventure we just had.
