ハンサムなアホウドリ Handsome Albatross

この日、私たちはサウスジョージア島の北、エルセフルベイをゴムボートでクルーズしました。　One day, we cruised in a zodiac around Elsehul Bay, north of South Georgia Island.

アホウドリのコロニーを崖の上に見上げ、なぜ彼らが崖っぷちを選ぶのか理解しました。 Looking up at the Albatross colony perched on the cliff, I understood why they choose the very edge.

彼らは他の大きな鳥と同じようにダイナミックソアリングを繰り返して空を飛びます。そのため、高い崖っぷちが便利なのです。 They fly through the air by repeatedly performing dynamic soaring, just like other large birds. For this reason, high cliff edges are convenient.

マユグロアホウドリ　Black-browed Albatross

その代わり、水面から飛び立つ時は大変な労力を必要とします。飛び立てないと思わせるぐらい長いこと水上を走って勢いをつけて飛び立ちます。 In return, taking off from the water’s surface requires tremendous effort. They run across the water for so long to build up momentum that it makes you think they cannot take flight.

マユグロアホウドリ　Black-browed Albatross

こちらはハイガシラアホウドリです。　This is the Gray-headed albatross.

マユグロアホウドリと同じように、彼らも目から鼻にかけて非常に美形です。　Like the Black-browed albatross, they too are exceptionally handsome from the eyes to the nose.

両種とも仲良く午後の気持ちの良い日を過ごしているようでした。　Both seemed to be getting along well and enjoying the pleasant afternoon.

さて、変わってこちらはフォークランド諸島のニューアイランドです。ニシロックホッパーペンギンの時もご紹介した例のシェアハウスです。相変わらず混み合っています。マユグロアホウドリ、ニシロックホッパーペンギン、そしてナンキョクムナジロヒメウがそれぞれ子育てに忙しい。　Now, moving on to New Island in the Falkland Islands. This is the same shared house I mentioned when introducing the Western Rockhopper penguin. It remains as crowded as ever. The Black-browed Albatross, Western Rockhopper, and Antarctic shag are all busy raising their young.

みんな命のバトンを渡していくために、疑うことなく今を精一杯生きているように見えました。こちらはマユグロアホウドリの求愛ダンス。 For the sake of passing on the baton of life, everyone seemed to be living in the present moment to the fullest, without a shred of doubt.　Here is the courtship dance of the Black-browed albatross.

マユグロアホウドリの巣は丸い桶のようです。しっかりとできているので、崖っぷちでも卵やヒナが転げ落ちる心配はなさそうです。　The nests of the Black-browed albatross resemble round tubs. They are so well constructed that there seems little risk of eggs or chicks tumbling over the cliff edge.

卵が孵化するまでに2.5ヶ月、巣立ちまで3ヶ月以上かかると言われています。 It is said that it takes 2.5 months for the eggs to hatch and over 3 months for the young to fledge.

ここ南半球では、巣立ちの頃はすでに冬を迎えているのでしょうか。　Here in the southern hemisphere, is it already winter by the time the young birds leave the nest?

その頃は、こんな風に成長しているんですね。頑張れよ、ヒナ達！　By then, you’ll have grown like this, won’t you? Keep at it, chicks!

B-15AB

B-15AB は2000年3月に南極のロス海を覆っているロス棚氷から分離した B-15 の子供、もしくは孫の氷山です。B-15 は分離した当時には世界最大の氷山の記録保持者で、ジャマイカ島より大きいサイズでした。　B-15AB is a daughter or granddaughter iceberg of B-15, which broke away from the Ross Ice Shelf covering the Ross Sea in Antarctica in March 2000. At the time of its separation, B-15 was the world’s largest iceberg on record, larger than the island of Jamaica.

その後、B-15 は北上を続け分裂を続け、子供氷山はB-15A から始まりB-15Z まで分裂し続けました。　Since then, B-15 continued its northward drift while splitting further, with the daughter icebergs continuing to break off from B-15A through to B-15Z.

2018年5月、NASAは B-15Z がサウスジョージア島沖を漂流しているとレポートしていました。その後、2021年、アメリカの National Ice CenterはB-15から分裂した氷山の中で、B-15abが最後の氷山となり、南極沖を漂っているということでした。　In May 2018, NASA reported that B-15Z was drifting off the coast of South Georgia. Subsequently, in 2021, the US National Ice Centre stated that B-15ab had become the last iceberg from the B-15 series, drifting off the coast of Antarctica.

これらのことを調べているうちに、氷山の名前の付け方が気になったので調べてみました。　While researching these matters, I became curious about how icebergs are named, so I looked into it.

南極点を基に地球の経度を4等分して、それぞれAからDと出身地をまず表示します。　Based on the South Pole, the Earth’s longitude is divided into four equal parts, each designated A to D, with the place of origin indicated first.

次に来る番号は、それぞれの象限の中で発見された順番が示されます。これによって、B-15はB象限の中で15番目に産まれた氷山だということがわかります。　The next number indicates the order in which each iceberg was discovered within its respective quadrant. This indicates that B-15 is the fifteenth iceberg to form within Quadrant B.

その後に来るアルファベットはその氷山が更に分裂していることを示します。それぞれ、分裂した氷山の中で、一番大きいものをAとして順にB,C,Dとつけていきます。だから、B-15AはB-15が分割した氷山の中でも一番大きい氷山だということがわかります。　Subsequent letters indicate that the iceberg has further fragmented. Within each fragmented iceberg, the largest fragment is designated A, followed sequentially by B, C, D, and so forth. Therefore, B-15A signifies that it is the largest iceberg fragment within the iceberg that B-15 has split off.

氷山の近くの氷片の上にいるアザラシを見ると、氷山の大きさがわかります。　Seeing a seal on an ice floe near an iceberg gives you an idea of the iceberg’s size.

「氷山の名前の付け方なんて興味ない〜！」と言われそうですが、もう少し付き合ってください。問題は、次の文字なんです。B-15ABの「B」は何を意味するのかわからないことです。　You might be thinking, ‘Who cares how they name icebergs?!’ but bear with me a moment longer. The problem lies with the next letter. I simply don’t know what the “B” in B-15AB stands for.

また、最後のアルファベット表記は大文字と小文字で使い分けているのかもしれないという疑いも出てきました。B-15ABのかわりにB-15abと表記されているのが一例です。　Furthermore, suspicions have arisen that the final alphabetical notation may be distinguished by upper and lower case letters. One example is the notation B-15ab instead of B-15AB.

でも、ここまで調べても先に進めそうもないので調査を打ち切りにしました。私の今後の生活に全く影響しないことでもありますしね。だから、私の記憶の中にだけに残すことを前提に、B-15ABはB-15の孫の氷山だということにしておきます。　However, having investigated this far, it seems unlikely I can make any further progress, so I have decided to discontinue the investigation. It is also something that has absolutely no bearing on my future life. Therefore, on the premise that it will remain solely within my memory, I shall consider B-15AB to be the grandchild of the B-15 iceberg.

温度計を見ると、もう、氷点下の世界を通り抜けていたことに気がつきました。　Glancing at the thermometer, I realised we had already passed through the sub-zero world.

マユグロアホウドリ。ついにご登場。撮れた！　Black-browed albatross. The moment I’ve been waiting for. Got it!

本当に雪のように白いユキドリ。そしてハシボソクジラドリです。こちらも初登場で、うれしい！ Snow-white as the snow itself, the Snow Petrel. And the Slender-billed Prion. Both are making their first appearance here, which is delightful!
