マカロニはペンギンの一種で、私が観察した限り、好奇心旺盛なのが特徴です。　Macaroni is a species of penguin, and from my observations, it exhibits a notably inquisitive nature.

だから、どんな危険な所にも躊躇なく出かけていきます。　Therefore, they venture into any dangerous places without hesitation.

興味を持つと渦巻く海藻の中にもどんどん入っていきます。　Once intrigued, they venture deeper and deeper into the swirling seaweed.

マカロニペンギンの名前の由来は18世紀のイギリスのオシャレな男性から来ています。そういう男性をマカロニと呼んでいたそうです。だから、黄色い飾りをつけたペンギンをマカロニと呼ぶようになったそうです。　The name ‘Macaroni Penguin’ originates from the dapper gentlemen of 18th-century Britain. Such men were apparently called ‘macaronis’. Hence, it is said that penguins with their yellow crests came to be called Macaroni.

イギリスの男性の場合は少し皮肉も入っていますが、マカロニペンギンの場合は、皮肉なしに格好いいですよね。　In the case of British men, there’s a touch of irony involved, but when it comes to Macaroni penguins, they’re just plain cool without any irony whatsoever.

こっちのマカロニはエレガントに見えます。　This Macaroni looks rather elegant.

マカロニペンギンはペンギンの種類の中でも小さい方のペンギンです。それでも、私には勇ましい冒険家に見えました。　Macaroni penguins are among the smaller species of penguin. Yet to me, they appeared as valiant adventurers.

ヒナは見つけられませんでしたが子供は見つけました。下の写真の左がそうです。頭の飾りも少ししかついていないし、まだクチバシも赤く色づいていないことから子供だとわかります。それに、お腹がずいぶん汚れているので、まだ海に入ったことがないのかもしれません。　I didn’t find any chicks, but I did find a youngster. That’s the one on the left in the photo below. You can tell it’s a youngster because it only has a little bit of head plumage and its beak hasn’t turned red yet. Also, its belly is quite dirty, so it probably hasn’t been in the sea yet.

こちらは長老達。子供たちをいつ海に連れて行こうか相談しているのかもしれません。　These are the elders. They may be discussing when to take the children to the sea.

崖の上の高い所、こんな茂みの中に住んでいるので、子供達は一人では海に降りて行けないのでしょう。　Living high up on the cliff, in such thick undergrowth, the children probably cannot go down to the sea alone.

サウスジョージア島のハーキュリーズベイでの出会いでした。　We saw these Macaroni Penguins in Hercules Bay on South Georgia Island.
