Independent Bobby?

Bobby the bobcat was relaxing in our backyard this morning. But we didn’t see his mom.

Bobby is not a baby anymore, but I am not sure if he can hunt already by himself.

One of my concerns is that he is wandering around during the daytime. Their active times are sunset to midnight, and before and after sunrise time. Isn’t it too late for him to wander around at 9 or 10am? Isn’t it risky for him?

Another reason is his size. He is still about half of adult size. The various websites say they normally stay with mom a little longer.

In any case, we have been having gopher problems recently in the backyard. If he can catch them, we welcome him to stay as long as he wants. The question is can he catch them?

Changing the subject, I want to describe to you two characteristics of bobcats. The first one is pointy ears. The tips of the ears have black pointy fur which makes distinct bobcat faces.

Another one is their tails. The tip of the short fat tail also has black fur.

Bobby In Our Courtyard

“Bobby! What are you doing here in the middle of the day?”

Is your mom somewhere near by?”

Bobby is a bobcat cub. We had an unexpected visit by him. We were surprised, and Mr. Toad who was soaking comfortably in the pool hid himself under the water.

I made a video based on two videos captured by our RING security system. Sorry for the bad image quality.

Bobby Came to Visit Again!

I was out for my dance lesson. When I came back home around 7:00pm, Banchan was so excited and showed me his video. Bobby the bobcat cub and his mom were there in our backyard around 6:20pm. Bobby was so joyfully, playing around there when Banchan found them there.

Banchan told me that he was so dumbfounded because it was such an unexpected sight, that he couldn’t move. He finally realized that his iPad was near-by, so he took some video before they left.

In the meantime, our security camera also captured their figures around 4:00am. It seems that they are active before dawn, but it’s rare for them to visit our backyard before sunset.

I immediately got five videos from Banchan as well as the security camera, edited them, and made a short video. I was deeply moved by my own video because I could see their lives full of love through the video.

Adventurous Bobby

It was such an exciting day from early morning. In the later afternoon, we could finally relax, and so we went out. But our backyard security camera sent us so many notices to my cell phone.

To our surprise, a bobcat was on the video. It must be Bobby’s mom. From the way she acted, it was clear Bobby didn’t find her after he came down from the tree. And she couldn’t find Bobby either. We can see how mom was worrying about Bobby and looked for him everywhere in the backyard.

No way!

He is still only 3-4 months old. The weather is so hot that it could be difficult to live through. The rescue ranger said that there is only a very slim chance for him to survive if he couldn’t rejoin his mom.

But we were relieved when we saw the last video. He was walking along with his mother. It seems that Bobby’s curiosity takes him everywhere without telling his mom. Please view the video.

Attractions:

Bobby’s mom was so thirsty that she kept drinking water for 1 minute 40 seconds.
The amount of water in the bowl, before and after.
Bobby’s sound.

Pre-Dawn Safari

Thump Thump, the sound came from right outside our bedroom and woke me up. I raised the shades on the windows, and there I found a Bobcat cub going back and forth less than two feet away from me.

The cub’s mother had a rabbit in her mouth for their breakfast. It was so unexpected, that I shouted “Camera, Lenses~!” Of course, that’s exactly I shouldn’t have done. While I was running around like a crazy person, they hopped onto the backyard fence, and disappeared.

But, the story didn’t end there!

Right outside of the bathroom window, the mother was still there with a concerned face. Does this mean what we hope? The cub should still be there.

The backyard fence is on the right.

Is she coming into the backyard again?

But then, she is looking up into the tree.

Does this mean that the cub is on the tree somewhere? But where?

Found him! I named him as Bobby then.

This all happened before dawn. Now the sunrise began and a strong sun started to illuminate the red rock hill.

What do you do, Bobby’s mom? It seems that Bobby can’t come down from the tree. It’s been two hours since he first climbed up.

Bobby looked so tired. Shouldn’t we do something to rescue Bobby? We observed all these movements from inside windows but we decided to go out. But then, we encountered his mom right there at the front yard.

Oh no… She was staring at me without blinking. This doesn’t look good.

Ever so slowly, and quietly, I returned to the house to take refuge. Banchan was so brave then. He carried out a ladder and wooden long board and set up a slope near the branch where Bobby was sitting. We hoped this will help Bobby to go down easily.

Still, the situation didn’t change for four hours. I finally decided to call Utah’s Wildlife Rescue Division. I explained all the details to the person who was driving over to our house. But then, Banchan shouted, “the cub is down by himself!” while I was talking to the rescue person.

Bobby’s foot. It looks soft like a cat’s foot.

I ran to the bathroom window and looked at the tree. And I found nothing there. Bobby had gone.

A shot when Bobby nearly fell down from the tree. Can you see his tiny claws? He held on to the tree so hard with those claws.

Here is a question. Was he in trouble and he really couldn’t come down, or was he simply resting there on the tree branches? No one knows the answer to this question but Bobby and his mother.

It was a great safari adventure early in the morning.

Midnight Party

- We have set up a stealth camera and a water bowl in our front yard in order to observe wild animals.

- The first character was a roadrunner.

- Then a quail family.

- A kangaroo rat appeared at night.

- But almost always rabbits appear all day and all night at any hour of the day.

- The stealth camera takes about 1000 shots per day, and 990 shots are rabbits. They are socializing by the bowl like this.

- But then, last night was very different.

– What? Is it a cat?  No!!! A bobcat is walking with a mid-night snack in his mouth!

- We had grown tired of deleting the rabbit pictures. But this exciting incident changed our enthusiasm for the stealth cam.  We’ve heard from neighbors that there are bobcat here, but didn’t take it seriously until now.  Bobcats really exist!  We decided to call him Kayenta as our house sits on Kayenta formation.

- Then, the rabbit social started peacefully again.
