最近、客の出入りが激しいです。中でも噴水の下の方。 We have quite a few guests these days, especially at the bottom of the water fountain.
この光景、どう見ますか？もしかしてヒキガエルの親子かな？ What do you think of this scene? Is it a toad with its child?
よく見ると、ちょっと違う。こちら、ヒキガエル。 If you look at them carefully, they are slightly different. This is a Toad.
こちら小さいカエル。 And this is a frog.
仲良く共存できるんですね。 It’s nice that they care share the space together.
「ボビー、こんな日中に何してるの？」 “Bobby! What are you doing here in the middle of the day?”
「お母さんは近くにいるの？」”Is your mom somewhere near by?”
ボビーはボブキャットの子供です。突然の来訪に私たちも、噴水の水たまりでくつろいでいたヒキガエルのミスタートッドも驚いています。 Bobby is a bobcat cub. We had an unexpected visit by him. We were surprised, and Mr. Toad who was soaking comfortably in the pool hid himself under the water.

ということで、私たちはシーダーブレイクス国定公園の夕日を見に行きました。So we went to Cedar Breaks National Monument for sunset.
涼しい！It’s so cool here!
たった 1.5 時間走っただけで、雪がまだ残っている山道を歩けるなんて最高です。It takes us only 1.5 hours of driving to get here where we could enjoy hiking the trail where snow still remains. How lucky we are!
早く！イガ五葉松の棲息する場所までもう一息。Hurry! The Bristlecone Pine tree forest is almost there.
1500 年も生きている老木は、いつ見てもダンスしてるように楽しそう。The old trees that have lived 1500 years look always to be so happily dancing.
雨が時折パラつく日でしたが、時々光る景色を求めて清々しいひと時を過ごしてきました。It was a day with an occasional sprinkles, but we enjoyed it very much by looking for shining places illuminated by sunset light.

こちら、ヒキガエルさん。- Let me introduce you Mr. Toad.
去年もお風呂の常連客でしたが、今年も戻って来られました。夜な夜な、玄関前の噴水の下の小さな水溜りでリラックスされてます。- He was a regular guest at our hot spring last year, and he returned back again. He relaxes nightly in a small pond under the fountain by the front door.
それが、どうしたわけか、昨日は 昼過ぎにやって来て、家の中をのぞいていました。- However for some reasons, he visited us in the early afternoon the other day. He was looking inside the house carefully through a window at next to the front door.
その後、室内に誰も見当たらなかったので、玄関ドアの前に移動しました。チョコリと座り、誰かを待っておられるようでした。残念ながらカエル語は知らないので、要件を伺えませんでした。 – He gave up the window after a while as he didn’t see no one in there and relocated himself to right in front of the door. He sat there nicely he was waiting for someone to come out patiently. I couldn’t ask him what his important matter was because I didn’t know the toad language.
お風呂の湯加減の苦情でしょかねぇ。- I wonder he had a complaint about the temperature of the bath.
昨日突然ピョンと飛び出て来たアマガエル、Ｗestern Chorus Frogです。日本語名はわかりません。 – This is a Western Chorus Frog which hopped out suddenly yesterday to our house.
こんな砂漠にも生息しているんですね。 – I didn’t know that frogs can live in desert locations like here.
捕まっている黒い管は水やり用のチューブで 10 mm もありません。ということはアマガエル君は 4-5 cm ぐらいでしょうか。 – The black tube that he is holding onto is a part of the garden irrigation system that is less than 10 mm diameter. So it means that the frog is about 4-5 cm.
ここは玄関前の噴水の横です。つまり、ヒキガエル君たちのテリトリーなんですね。 – It is next to the fountain right outside of the front door. It means that it’s in the territory of Woodhouse’s Toads.
ヒキガエル君にとって毎晩の水浴びは、すでに日課となりました。噴水を分け合って共存できるんでしょうか。 – It became a daily routine for Mr. Toad to take bathe in the fountain every night. Can they share the water fountain, and co-exist?
落し物というか、落とされた物と言えばいいのかな。人間以外の排泄物の話。すみません！
犬、猫、馬、鳥、この辺の落し物は有名どころなので話す必要はないと思います。コヨーテ、ウサギなども、まあ、わかる。そしてネズミも。。。と、思っていたんですが、どうやらそうでもないらしいんです。
念のため、この Desert Cottontail は走っているだけです。夕日を浴びて綺麗ですよね。
閑話休題、こちらの落し物・・・
てっきりネズミだと思ったので、近くのアイビーも全部刈り取って、その道の専門家に来てもらって囮の餌が入っている箱まで設置したんですが、餌は全く手付かず。相変わらず毎晩の訪問と落し物がありました。そこで専門家の大親分のお出ましです。
彼曰く、「ふむ、コウモリかもしれませんねぇ。」
「え〜っ？！！！」
中庭には格子が付いているし、コウモリがぶら下がる格好の場所が他にもあるし。
ということで、ネズミ用の餌箱も念のためしばらく設置しておきますが、今度は上からの落下を観察することとなりました。
ちなみに、中庭にはこんなのも結構見かけます。専門家曰く、こっちはヒキガエルなんだそうです。山猫だったらどうしようなんて思ってたのに、温泉に浸かりにくるヒキガエルだったとは・・・それにしても、大きい〜！
あまり触れたくない話なんですが、まだ謎の問題なので書いておきました。
