Hike 7: 氷の橋 Ice Bridges

週末、今年7番目のハイキングをするためにザイオン国立公園のコロブキャニオンズ地区に行きました。 　We went to Kolob Canyons district of Zion National Park last weekend to do the 7th hike of this year.

雪と氷を全く予想していなかったので、トレイル入口で断念しました。標高2000m以上はまだ冬。アイゼンやストックを持って行けば、さぞかし楽しいハイクができたことでしょう。 We didn’t even think about ice and snow, but there it was. So we gave up at the trail entrance as we didn’t bring crampons and hiking sticks. The elevation, over 7,000 ft, was still very much in winter.

車で65kmも走ってきたので諦めきれず、近くの町のスプリングクリークというトレイルに向かいました。 We felt we had to do some hike since we drove 40 miles to get there. So went to near-by Spring Creek trail.

比較的平らなので、多少の登りや下りはあっても、気をつけて歩けば雪道も怖くないと思ったからです。 We thought the snow covered trail wasn’t that bad as long as we walked carefully because the trail was rather flat.

しばら歩いていくと、一歩踏み込んだ時の靴音が違うのに気づきました。 We noticed that the sound from under our boots was different after a while.

これは、もしかして、いや、まさに、小川の上を歩いていた！！！ We were possibly… let me rephrase it, we were absolutely walking on a river!!!

橋の上を歩くと聞こえる太鼓を叩くような音。気がついたら、小川のせせらぎが聞こえていました。氷の橋だ！ The sound I heard was very similar to the sound that we could hear when we walk on a bridge. Then, I noticed the sound of the creek. It was an ice bridge!

さらにいつくかの小さな氷の橋を渡り、気分も爽やかでしたが、１.5kmぐらい歩いた所でガリー（深い谷）に遭遇し、断念しました。 I felt so good walking on the snow and crossing a few more ice bridges. But then, we needed to give up at 1 mile because a deep gully full of thick mud was ahead of us.

10kmぐらい歩きたいと思っていたのに、3kmしか歩けませんでした。でも、初めて氷の橋を渡ることができたから、ラッキー。 We wanted to hike longer than 6 miles, but it was only less than 2 miles. But that’s all right. We could walk over ice bridges which I have never done before!

ハエトリツグミさん。初めまして！　ところで、何か持ってますね。何ですか？ Oh, you are a Townsend’s Solitaire bird. It’s nice to meet you!

ウウァー、キレイ！水晶みたい。 How pretty that is! It’s just like a crystal ball.

あなたが冬の贈り物だったんですね。雪の中でキラキラ光ってます。 You look delightful shining in the snow. I got it. You, yourself is the winter present for us.

ありがとう！ザイオン国立公園の西側でもらったプレゼント。 Thank you for such a lovely present from the west side of Zion National Park.

ザイオンの朝 Morning in Zion

早朝、私たちは再びザイオンを訪れました。まだ暗かったので公園の入口近くのクリスマス用のイルミネーションが綺麗でした。 We visited Zion National Park again the following morning. We saw pretty Christmas illuminations near the park entrance because it was still so dark.

この日はザイオンの東側に行き、朝日を浴びたザイオンの写真を撮るのが目的でした。 Our purpose this day was to see the morning sunrise from the east side of Zion.

トンネルの向こうの東ザイオンの風景は渓谷内とは少し違います。 The scenery is different once you go through the tunnel because it is no longer in the valley.

渓谷ではないので、なだらかです。 Because of that, peaks and slopes are more gentle.

クロスベッドの地層がよくわかります。 We can see the cross-bed strata very well.

まだ早朝だったのでラッセル車の前後を走りました。仕方がないので東の公園入り口まで走り、見送りました。 Because it was so early, we drove pretty much together with a snowplow. So we waited a little for it to drive ahead at the east entrance so we wouldn’t block it.

少しづつ朝日が差し込んでくる予感がします。 We sensed that the morning light was gradually coming through the thick clouds.

遠くの崖の上に私のクリスマスツリーを見つけました。見えるでしょうか。いつかこの木が朝日に照らされている写真を撮りたいです。 I found my Christmas tree at the tip of the rock. Can you see it? I decided that I will take pictures of the tree illuminated by the morning light one of these days.

ところで、このツララ、何かがおかしい。重力の法則に従ってない。まっすぐ下に伸びてないんですね。どうしてでしょうか。 By the way, look at these icicles. Do you agree with me that something is wrong? It’s against the law of gravity. They were not hanging down straight. Why did such a thing happen?

そんな疑問は突然眼前に現れた景色に吹き飛ばされ、息を呑みます。 In any case, we were awed by the sight that suddenly appeared right in front of us.

ついに朝日が雲間から現れました。 The morning light had finally broken through the clouds.

景色が再び一変します。 The scenery had changed its look again dramatically.

The hills breathed again for a new day with the light.

再びトンネルを抜けて渓谷に帰ってきた時には車の量も増えて数珠繋がり状態になっていました。でも、景色の素晴らしいこと！ When we exited the tunnel on our way back to the valley, we found so many cars already lined up on the road. Ugh! But what a stunning view it was!

車を止めて、朝の渓谷の写真を撮ることにしました。 So we stopped our car and started taking pictures.

午後には用事があるので帰途を急ごうとしていた私たちですが、サイドビューミラーを見ても、素晴らしい景色が私たちを引き止めようとします。 Because we had an errand in the afternoon, we were hurriedly going out from the park. But even the reflection of the side view mirror tried to stop us leaving there because it was so gorgeous.

しばらくサイドビューミラーの景色を楽しんでいたら、セルフィーが撮れました。微かにカメラを構えている私が見えます。 I enjoyed the view through the side view mirror for a while. Later, I realized that I took a selfy shot capturing views from the side view mirror. Can you see me faintly holding my camera?

帰途、遠くに見えたビーバーダムマウンテンにも雪が積もっていました。美しい景色は見るだけで幸せ度をグンとあげてくれるんですね。 On the way back home from the road, we saw the snow covered Beaver Dam mountains. It is very true for me that my happiness gauge goes up so high when seeing beautiful views like this.

雪と夕陽 Snow And Sunset

昨日のブログの続きです。 This is the continuation of yesterday’s blog entry.

ザイオンロッジを後にして渓谷の奥、ナローズへ向かいました。 We went to the Narrows after stopping at the Zion lodge.

ひたすら楽しく写真を撮りまくりました。We simply enjoyed walking around and taking pictures there.

雪が止み、時折の青空は嬉しいことです。 The snow stopped at one point, and occasional blue patches of sky made us happier.

なぜなら、夕陽のショットを期待していたからです。 This was because we hoped to take some sunset pictures with good light.

サイドミラーに映る夕陽をあびた岩壁。 I found an image on the side mirror showing a rock with sunset light!

慌てて車を止めて岩壁を仰ぐと、光っていました。これは大変。 We stopped the car, and looked up towards the rocks. They were gorgeously shining.

日没が迫っていました。急いでバージンリバーへと降りて行きました。 It was already so close to sunset time. We went down to the Virgin river quickly.

夕陽を浴びたウォッチマンを撮りたかったんですが、間に合いませんでした。 I wanted to take pictures of Watchman getting light, but it was too late.

ほんのりと微かに光っているだけでした。 Only thin slivers of light were there.

その代わり、イーストテンプルと近くの山々が美しかった。 Instead, we got beautiful light on East Temple and the nearby neighbor peaks.

神々しく光るイーストテンプルは撮りたかった写真の一枚でした。 The East temple getting sunset light was so divine. It was one of the pictures I always wanted to take.

ありがとうザイオン！今日も一日素晴らしい日となりました。 Thank you Zion! It was such a wonderful day again because of you!

冬が来た！ Winter Has Arrived!

ザイオン国立公園に雪が降るとの天気予報を聞き、初雪の写真を撮りに出かけました。 We went to Zion National Park to take pictures because the weather report said it was going to snow.

近くなるにつれて雪がドンドン降ってきました。 As the park got closer, the snow got heavier.

期待した通りでした。公園に着いたら雪の世界が広がっていました。 And just like we wanted, the park changed to a snow wonderland.

とりあえずザイオンロッジに向かいました。 We went to the Zion lodge first.

深い雪雲で大きな岩壁は見えないものの、時折の雲間から見える渓谷の景色に大満足です。 We enjoyed the grand views from the lodge very much even though we couldn’t see the peaks as the thick clouds covered them.

ロッジからバージンリバーを渡り、トレイルを歩きました。 We crossed the Virgin river from the lodge, and walked on a trail.

雪に覆われるとどうしてこんなに風景が美しくなるんでしょうね。 Why is that scenery becomes so beautiful once snow covers the land?

魔法の杖が一振りされたんですね、きっと。 I guess someone had waved a magic wand.

トレイルはツルツルで、アイゼンを持ってくるのを忘れてしまったことに後悔しました。While we walked the slippery trail, we regretted that we didn’t bring our crampons.

早々に引き上げ、車に戻ってきた時には私たちにも雪が積もっていました。 So we soon gave up walking and came back to our car. When we got to the parking lot, we realized that the snow was on us as well.

牡鹿の立派な角にも雪が積もっていました。 The snow was on the buck’s gorgeous antlers as well.

もう冬が来ていました。 Winter had come already.

Hike 27: ザイオンの東 East Zion – Between Two Canyon Loop

久しぶりのザイオンの東、7.5km、ナバホ砂岩層の登り300m以上、全行程7.5kmをぐるりと回るハイクでした。The hike was in the east side of Zion National Park, 4.5 miles round trip with 1000 feet of climbing. It’s been a while since I came to Zion for a hike.

朝3時半に起き、ハイク仲間と5時に待ち合わせ、まだ真っ暗な中を歩き始めました。 We woke up at 3:30am, met our hike friends at 5am, and started walking when it was still dark.

暑くなる前にハイキングを終わらせるためです。 We wanted to finish the hike before it got hot.

太陽の光が差し始めました。The light from the Sun started shining on the cliff.

山間の高台に着いた時には、イーストテンプルが光を受けて私たちを迎えてくれました。 When we got to a mesa between the canyons, the majestically lit East temple greeted us.

そこでしばらく休憩です。涙が出るほど美しい。 We had a short break there. It was so beautiful that it made me almost cry.

その後しばらくイーストテンプルの方向に歩いて行きます。 We continued toward the East temple after that.

最近の嵐で水が流れ、水溜りが沢山できていました。 Because of the recent storms, many pools were created.

水溜りを避けながら、さらにズンズン進みます。 We kept going on avoiding the pools.

私たちのハイクも後半に入りました。下りが多くなります。 In the second half of our hike, we started going down more than going up.

それでも魅了される景色ばかり。 How majestic it was!

この雄大な景色の中、ただひたすら嬉しくて、やっぱりハイキングが大好きなんだと実感しました。 I was simply so happy in the grand nature, and realized again that I like hiking here.

トレイルのない山道です。だから観光客はほぼ皆無。静寂の世界。 There are no trails there, so almost no tourists go there. It was so peaceful.

ありがとう、ザイオン。大好きです! Thank you, Zion. I love you!

友達 Friends

昨日、標高2,405ｍ、ザイオン国立公園のラバポイントに行ってきました。風が強く、雨が降りそうな暗い曇り空。寒かった。We went to Lava Point in Zion National Park yesterday. The altitude is 7,890 feet. It was a cold, dark, and windy day.

ミドリトウヒチョウをカメラに収めたくて、鳴き声を追いかけて30-40分歩き回りました。何しろ、前回ここに来て撮ったショットにはシッポと頭の上だけだったので、リベンジ戦です。I was determined to capture the Green-tailed Towhee yesterday because last time we came here, I was not able to capture the Towhee’s face.

その甲斐あって、ついに遠い枯れ木の枝に見つけました。 上の鳥はロビンです。Following the calling sounds for 30-40 minutes, I finally found it on a faraway tree branch below a Robin.

狙いを定めて、ジャンプ。 Aim, Set, and Jump!

ロビンと比べると大きさと色の違いが分かります。緑というか、薄緑色のシッポですね。 We can see the size and color well by comparing it to the robin. The Green-tailed towhee’s tail is not quite green, but light green.

木の上で、どんな会話がなされていたんでしょうか。昨日のような寒い日には、友達がいるって、いいですよね。 I wonder what kind of conversation they had on the tree. In any case, it’s nice to have friends on a cold day like yesterday.

Hike 9: North Of Kolob

名前のない岩の山。North Kolob Rd 沿いのLambs knollの駐車場に車を停めて、歩き出しました。往復、約8ｋｍのハイキングでした。 It was about a 5 mile hike to an unnamed rock and back. We started walking from the parking lot of Lambs Knoll by North Kolob Road.

ザイオン国立公園のエンジェルズランディングに行く予定でしたが、修復作業の為、閉鎖されていました。それよりも何よりも、公園の入口前の道で1.5時間も待ってもまだ入れなかったので、断念しました。 We planned to hike up to Angel’s Landing In Zion NP but we gave up because it was closed for maintenance. Besides that, we couldn’t even get to the entrance gate. None of us knew that Spring break started yesterday in Utah. No wonder so many kids and cars were there.

その後、バージンの街まで戻り、そこからコロブテラスに向かう道を北上しました。 We waited for 1.5 hours in the line, but made a U-turn back to the town of Vergin, then went up north on North Kolob road.

Lambs Knoll の岩場の駐車場から草原を越え、無名の岩山を登ります。From Lambs Knoll parking lot, we went up to an unnamed rock.

目指したのは、1872年に初めてここを訪れた写真家が撮った風景です。どこから撮ったのかわからないので、同じような風景の場所を探すしかありません。What we looked for was the same scenery that was a photographer, Jack Hiller, captured in his photograph in 1872. No one knows from where he took it, so we just had to guess about the location by comparing the scene in front of our eyes with his photo.

ここです！わーい！まさにジャック ヒラーさんが撮った場所です。This was it. This was one of the locations he had chosen.

1870年代の写真現像プロセスの詳しいことは分かりませんが、写真を撮ってから15分以内に完了していなければいけなかったらしく、その為には水が必要だったらしいです。ラッキーなことに、この崖の上に小さな水場を発見した彼らは、予想外にたくさん写真を撮れたという話が残っています。 I don’t know well about the history of the development process around the 1870’s. But I was told that it had to be processed within 15 minutes, and water was one of the key materials they needed to use. Fortunately, they found a pool of water at the top of the rock, so they could take more pictures than they expected.

コンドル Condor

去年、ザイオン国立公園でコンドルの卵が孵化しました。巣立ちしたとのことで、昨日、観察しに行ってきました。A condor egg hatched at Zion National Park last year. We went to see it yesterday because we heard that it fledged.

見えました。でも、やっぱり遠くて 800mm のレンズでも詳細はキャッチできませんでした。We could see it. But it’s way too far that I couldn’t capture much detail even with my 800mm lens.

詳細は撮れなかったけれど、羽が太陽の光を受けて鮮やかに光っているのがみられてやはりラッキーでした。Although I couldn’t get a good shot with detail of it, I still think I was lucky because I could see the wings shining with the light of the sun.

コンドルを1000ショットも撮った後は少し山歩きをして家路につきました。アイコニックとして有名なワッチマンを見る景色は、いつみてもやっぱり美しい。After 1000 shots of the condor, we hiked a little and went back home. The view from a bridge looking out to see the iconic Watchman rock is always breathtakingly beautiful.

雷雨の後 After The Thunderstorm

今朝、夜明け前の空。 This is the sky from right before sunrise this morning.

ザイオン国立公園や、近隣の街では激しい雷雨がありました。バンちゃんは雷の写真を撮るのが好きなので、落雷、豪雨注意報のある場所を目指して出かけました。 We had a thunderstorm near by town and parks like Zion National Park. Banchan likes taking pictures of lightning. So we drove out to places there the weather alerts were on.

389号線、車のフロントガラスが割れそうなほど激しい雨の中、道路も洪水状態です。It rained so hard that we worried if the front-shield on the car could survibe from it while we run on highway 389. The road was flooded.

雨が治まるのを待ちながら落雷の光る瞬間を捕らえようとしましたが、全滅。タイミングよく光を捕らえるのは、小さな鳥を撮るより難しい。We tried to capture the lightnings when the rain died down time to time, but couldn’t get any of them. It was much harder to capture lightnings than small birds in our cameras.

帰り道、ザイオン国立公園を東口から入って帰路につく計画でしたが、公園内での洪水のため入園止め。思いっきり想定外でした。つまり、再び大きな弧を描いて帰らなければならなくなったのです。 We planned to go back home through Zion National Park from the east entrance, but it was closed off. We didn’t think about it al all, but the park was flooded here and there. So we needed to go back home the way we drove up there by drawing a large arch.

家にたどり着いた時はすでに夜10時すぎ。バンちゃんは疲れ切っていましたが、気分は悪くない。なぜなら、帰途、これまた想定外の自然のプレゼントをもらったからです。そのことに関しては、明日書きます。It was after 10pm when we got back hom. Banchan was so tired from driving but he was rather happy based on my observation. It’s because we’ve received an unexpected present from nature. And I will write all about the present tomorrow.

パルヌウィープ – Parunuweap

コロナも何も関係ないほどザイオン国立公園内は混んでいました。駐車できる場所を探すのに一苦労でしたが、私たちの目指すパルヌウィープの高台への登山道に入るとすぐ喧騒は消えてしまいました。Zion National Park was already so crowded even though there are still Corona restrictions. We had a hard time finding a place to park, but it became quiet once we started walking on the trail to our destination, Parunuweap Overlook.

以下のスクリーンショットは私たちの道なき道を歩いた軌跡、標高、そして移動スピードのデータです。携帯サービスのない所にばかり行くので、サテライトに繋げられるデバイスを使い始めました。The screenshot below shows the trace of our hike, elevation, and speed of our movement. We started using a gps device that can connect to a satellite because we often go places where no cell phone services are available.

このハイキングは9時間ほど、16kmぐらいの距離を崖を登ったり降ったりと、かなりチャレンジングなものでした。でも、どこもかしこも絶景で、ザイオンの秘境を満喫し、同時に自然の美しさを謙虚に受け止めました。The hike was about 10 miles long with a lot of ups and downs on a rocky surface for about 9 hours. It was quite strenuous for me, but everywhere I looked, I found spectacular views. I humbly appreciated all of them at the secluded area of Zion NP.

R5 カメラがあったら、どんなに美しく撮れたことかと思うと残念ですが、私の携帯カメラでも、十分に素晴らしい絶景が撮れました。I wish I carried my R5 camera so that I could take much better shots than these. (if I carried my R5, it might be too hard to walk through the hike.) Yet, still, I could captures many nice shots.

記念に残るハイキングの一つになりました。This hike became one of my most memorable hikes in recent years.

  • The dark pointy mountain behind the reserver is Eagle Crags
  • The West and East temples are on the left and right.
  • We needed to walk often like this, on more than 45 degree slopes.
  • Moqui balls, aka concretions, are scattered around.
  • Moqui balls are so cute!

夕日の中の魚 – The Fish in Sunset

夕日を追いかけて、15号線沿いの無名のキャンプサイトにたどり着いた。 – Chasing the sunset, we had come to an unknown campsite off HWY 15.

8:22pm

こんにちは、ウェストテンプルの魚君。- Hello again, Mr. Fish, on the West Temple wall.

夕日は 8:40pm だから、もうあまり時間がない。- Sunset time that day was 8:40 pm.  We didn’t have much time to search for a good place or setup our camera.

8:34pm

光はすでにウェストテンプルの上の方しか当たってない。- It goes by so quick.  The sunlight is only at the top of the West Temple.

8:41pm

振り向いたらすでに日は暮れていた。The sun was set already when I looked back to the west.

もうあたりは暗くなっていた。バンちゃんが立っている方を見ると、彼は腰を据えている。そう、写真家はこれからの色の変化を期待する。 – It was already dark when I looked in the direction of Banchan.  It seems he was ready to take more pictures.  That’s right.  Photographers look for the subtle color changes after sunset.

グレナディン色が夜の青に消されていく幻想的な時。- After the sunset, when the night blue gradually invades the Grenadine pink, it creates a mystic world.

そして、最後の力を振り絞っているかのように、なぜか、東の空が一瞬だけ明るくなる。不思議な一瞬。Then, the east sky became suddenly brighter about 10 seconds as if the sun squeezed out the last bit of light.  A magical moment it was.
