20億年の旅 – Travel Through 2 Billion Years

グランドキャニオン国立公園で20億年の旅をして来ました。I traveled through 2 billion years at Grand Canyon National Park.

とは言え、大きな一歩が凡そ100万年のマーカーのついている地質学の道を20億年前のマーカーから現在まで歩いただけなんですけどね。Having said that we only walked through the Trail of Time, a geology timeline. The trail has markers representing one million years for every large step.

でも、とても面白かった。最も大きな理由は、ブライトエンジェルシェールに触る事ができたし、渓谷を見たら即どれかわかるようになったから。It was very interesting and exceeded my expectations. The main reason was because I could touch Bright Angel shale rock, and now I could identify which layer is the Bright Angel shale.

下の写真、裾広がりのスカート状に広がっている部分が全部ブライトエンジェルシェールです。つまり、ブライトエンジェル登山道のインディアンガーデンからプラトーポイントの道は全部ブライトエンジェルシェールで覆われているんです。まさに名前が示す通りだったんですね。See the picture below. Bright Angel shale is in the areas shaped like flared skirts. In other words, it’s everywhere. The Bright Angel trail from Indian Garden to Plateau Point travels across the Bright Angel shale.

5億年前のブライトエンジェルシェールは丁度マイルストーンみたいです。なぜなら、ブライトエンジェルシェールの地層がわかると、あとはすんなりとわかってしまい、その下の層、タピーツ砂岩の下にはグランドキャニオンスーパーグループと、ビシュヌ片麻岩層があるだけなんです。I thought Bright Angel Shale is like a milestone in the strata because once you knows which one is Bright Angel Shale, the rest of the layers are rather simple. There are only two more groups exist right below Tapeats sandstone. They are Grand Canyon Super group and Vishnu schist.

ビシュヌ変成岩の中でも一番古いエルビスチャズムス、18億年前のもの。Elves Chasm gneiss is the oldest rock in the Vishnu schist group.

地球誕生が46億年前。それから28億年経った18 億年前と言えどもまだ北アメリカ大陸は存在していませんでした。空気中の酸素はまだ1％ぐらいしかなく、単細胞藻類が水中にようやく姿を現し始めた頃です。なんとまだ1日が19時間ぐらいだった頃。Earth was born 4.6 billion years ago. 1.8 billion years ago, North America didn’t exist yet. The atmosphere contained only 1% Oxygen, unicellular algae emerged in the water. A day was only 19 hours then.

こんなに太古代のことまでわかってしまう地質学者はすごいな。地球の歴史を掘り起こしてくれたコロラド川に感謝です。How great the geologists are who figured out such incredible details of the Archean eon! And I am grateful to the Colorado river that revealed this part of Earth’s history.

また一気にタイムトラベルして、上層部の地層、ココニオ砂岩、トロウィープ砂岩、そしてそして、2.7億年前に出来た最上部のカイバブライムストーンで終了です。Let’s back up all the way to the top three layers. They are Coconino sandstone, Toroweap sandstone, and Kaibab limestone formed 270 million years ago.

2.7億年前のペルム紀は、三畳紀の直前、まだ恐竜の時代は始まってません。ブライトエンジェルシェールのカンブリア紀からさらに2.5億年今に近づきました。丁度パンゲア超大陸ができていた頃。1日は22時間ぐらいで両生類や爬虫類も生息していました。270 million years ago, it was called the Permian period, right before Triassic period, and the dinosaur age hadn’t started yet. Roughly another 250 million years past the Cambrian period is when the Bright Angel shale was formed. It was the time Pangaea, the super continent, existed. A day was about 22 hours, and amphibians and lizards were there already.

それのどこが面白いの？という人は多いでしょう。確かに以前の私にはどうでもいいことでした。でも今はこの確固とした地球史、石の存在は、何かに迷った時に立ち返る事ができる「拠り所」にも思えるのでした。Many people may ask me, “Why do you find it interesting?” I didn’t care much about it before, but now I find it fascinating. The history of earth, the existence of rocks became my solid ground to go back to when I am confused by things happening around me.

ブライトエンジェルシェールに拘っていました。家の近くにあるビーバーダム山脈にもあるはずの地層なのに、どれだかまだ特定できていなかったからです。見てみたい、触ってみたいというのが今回の旅の目的でもありました。だからブライトエンジェル登山道を降りる予定でした。I was quite eager to know what was the Bright Angel Shale. It’s because I understand that the Beaver Dam Mountains near our house also exposes the same strata, but hadn’t identified which layer it is. One of the highlights of the trip was to see and touch the Bright Angel Shale. So we naturally had chosen Bright Angel Trail in the Grand Canyon for our hike.

プラトーポイントまで行けたらいいな。バンちゃんは若い頃、そこまで日帰りでいって帰って来たそうです。でも、今は体力も衰えているので自信なさそうです。I wished that we could go all the way to Plateau Point, but at the same time, I understood that it could be too ambitious to do so for me. Banchan has done the round-trip hike in one day when he was young. But now even he hesitated to do so.

ビジターセンターの前の掲示によると、インディアンガーデンまでなら 6ー9 時間で行って来られる。それが私が密かに決めた目標でした。According to the bulleton board, it takes about 6-9 hours round trip to Indian Garden. We could do that. So it became my goal, although I didn’t tell anyone about it.

ところが、いざ行こうとすると難関が待ち受けていました。凍りついた雪道です。But despite my determination, we had found an obstacle literary right in front of us. It was an icy trail.

勿論、アイゼンを購入すれば行けたのでしょう。アイゼンでの歩行練習もしてないで降るのは少々危険です。友人夫妻も一緒だったので断念しました。Of course, we could buy crampons at a nearby shop, but we gave it up instead. We didn’t want to risk ourselves as well as our couple friend. The first time wearing crampons and walking down with them without practicing could be dangerous.

ボ〜ッと鳥たちの行方をおったりして、今日は一体何をして過ごすんだい？と気力のないまま話し合います。”What do we do now?” we asked. We discussed what we could do, but I just followed birds flying through the air, without much enthusiasm.

ベンチの上に作られた雪だるまを見てもちっとも面白くない。It didn’t excite me even when I found a snowman on a bench.

登山靴にアイゼンをつけて出発の準備まさに完了という人たちに出会いました。5日間のハイキング予定だと言っていました。We met a group of people who are ready to go down after putting crampons on to their hiking shoes. They told us they were planning a five day hike to go down and up.

まだまだ寒いグランドキャニオン。どうやら私達は準備不足だったようです。これをしっかり受け止めて来年に向けて頑張ります。3泊ぐらいで帰ってくる計画を立てたい。それまで体力トレーニングをして準備しようと誓い合いました。I should have known that the Grand Canyon rim was still very cold. It appears that we didn’t prepare enough for the hike, and I accepted it. We said to each other that we will come back here again next year with a three night hiking plan. Until then, we promised to each other to train ourselves for the grand hike.

グランドキャニオンの南と北 – South and North rims of the Grand Canyon

グランドキャニオン国立公園の南側に到着したときには、すでに夕暮れが迫っていました。この渓谷を作り出して来た張本人のコロラド川が遥か下にちょっぴり見えて、流石に息を呑む景色です。The Sun was already setting when we arrived at the Grand Canyon National Park South Rim. The view was simply awesome. We could see a tiny portion of the Colorado River down there, which created the canyon.

私たちの住むセイントジョージから北側まで3時間もかかりませんが、南側までは 6 時間以上もかかります。必然、北側には行った事がありましたが、南は今回が初めてでした。It takes less than three hours to the North Rim from our house in St. George, but it takes more than 6 hours to the South Rim. So I’ve been to the North Rim before, but it was my first time to visit the South Rim.

一般に北側からより南側からの眺めの方が良いと言われています。1番の理由は南側の高度 (2,100m) の方が北側 (2,438m)より低いため、渓谷内がよく見えるからだと説明を受けました。確かにこの日見た渓谷は夕日に照らされて神秘的にすら見えました。In general, people say that it’s a much better view from the South Rim. It was explained to me that the elevation of the south rim (7,000 feet) is lower than the north rim (8,000 feet). So that you can see the valley better from the south rim. Indeed, the valley on that day was so grand and mysterious, lit by the magical light from the sunset.

もっと眺めていたかったのですが、気がつくとあたりはすでに真っ暗で足元も見えなくなっていました。「明日は渓谷を降りられるところまで降りていくぞ！」と意気込んで早々にホテルに引き上げました。We wanted to be there longer, but it was already dark so that we could only see faint shadows. We planned to walk down the valley as far as we could the next day. So we went back to the lodge early. “Tomorrow!” said I, gallantly.

グランドキャニオンノースリム – Grand Canyon NP North Rim

両手の回復期間に、まだ行ったことがなかったグランドキャニオン国立公園に行ってきました。
久しぶりの遠出で気分は高まります。とはいえ、ノースリムは家からほんの3時間。お弁当を持って日帰りのドライブでした。 – I went to Grand Canyon National Park while I was waiting for my hands to recover. It took only three hours from home to get to the north rim, but it was exciting for me because it was my first time.

南側より高度が300 – 400 m 以上高いことや、コロラド川までのアプローチが長いことなどから、趣が少々違うようです。オリンピック国立公園に少し似ているような気がしました。道端の花や緑が綺麗でした。 – The north rim is more than 1000 feet higher than the south rim, and the approach distance to get to Colorado river is much longer than from the south rim. I was informed that the impression is quite different. My impression was similar to Olympic National Park because the flowers and greenery are similar on the way to get to the north rim.

ここで出会ったおばあちゃん。アラバマからご主人と一緒に初めて来てからもう17年。ご主人は亡くなってしまったけれど、犬と一緒に17回目の訪問だと教えてくれました。ここからの眺めが一番好きと言って写真を撮っていました。 – This is an old lady who I met there. She came here with her husband 17 years ago. Although he had passed away, she’s been here 17 times with her dog. She told me that she likes the view from here the most.

コロラド川は、600 万年以上前からコロラド高原を深く削り続けてきたと言われています。その結果、何十億年も前からの地層が現れてきたんですね。北側からは遠くて肉眼ではほとんど見えません。でも、ほんの少し緑色の部分があるのがわかりますか？ – It’s been said that the Colorado river has been running through the Colorado Plateau since 6 million years ago carving the deep canyon. Because of that, several billion years of strata has been revealed. The river is too far from the north rim, so you almost can’t see it with naked eyes. Can you see a tiny bit of green color in the picture?

400mm のレンズを使うとこんな風に見えて来ます。 – With 400mm lens, you can see the river like this.

畏敬の念、何十億年もの時を越える時。こうして地層を見るといつも思います。ちっぽけな自分。くよくよしないで自由に生きよう！ – I am filled with awe, looking down through the layers of sedimentary rock bringing my imagination all the way back to several billion years ago. It also makes me aware that I am so insignificant over the history of the earth. It tells me to just live and be the way I am without worrying about little things.
